I had the honor of meeting Sammy Davis Jr. on several occasions. He was a friend of my mother's close friend, so he would visit our home whenever he traveled through our town. I was a kid and did not know who he really was, but I loved him and his visits because he was kind to me, told stories, and once even brought me on stage with him. He was an OUTSTANDING human being!!!!!! RIP my friend.
Here I am after years of falling for this song finds this video tonight that fit the bill in context. Those that think like me fear just being another face..another Bojangles #dopeaf
Tears rolled down my eyes when I watched and heard Sammy Davis in this video. We all have our individual Bo Jangles in life--- in one way or another. He gave his performances such power because he gave of himself. He was such a great human being and, as he says in the video, he gave it all whenever he performed. We are fortunate to have his legacy. New generations must be exposed to his work. Thank you, Gattino12, for uploading this powerful performance.
The short brother was a giant like no other. "Don't let them say you didn't give it your all" Never Sammy, thanks to you I never leave doubts,,,. RIP my king!

Sammy's routine on the Flip Wilson show in the 70's changed my life. It was the most powerful thing I'd ever seen and I've never forgotten it. And have never seen anything comparable. I believe the writer of this song was in jail and met the real Mr Bo Jangles, then wrote this song in his honor.
he was Mr.Bojangles and that was how it should be. nothing wrong with being that man. he did a fine job. lived a good life and made many people happy. he will always be remembered and may he dance forever in the hearts of the people who had the opportunity to see him. he was one of the best performers to grace a stage. RIP Sammy you will be missed and thanks for every moment you gave us.
No, he wasn't Bojangles but took the song/story to great heights. Bojangles, travelled about with his dog, without a care in the world. Only a blue/green eyed man could galivant the south with such assurance, those days. Moving from one place to another for us Black folks, took careful planning. Deep understanding of the Green-Book was an absolute necessity. So lucky I was to have been born in the late 50's.

Thats heavy 1:42 ... wiped up from a changing of times. Times do change, very fast. One can't fight the times they a'change... you have to ride them, change with them, be part of the here and now. On the other hand, Sammy was of certain kind of performer that was just class man. He connected with the audience, he was as one, making each member of that audience feel like he was performing for just YOU. And he was humble, modest and down to earth and genuine. You just dont see that anymore.
To the youthful mind life seems unlimited. But at some point in everyones life you reach that crest and reality sets in. We all fear becoming that... old man... who talks about life in the past tense. After hearing Sammy's thoughts I'm sure it was quite chilling for him to perform this number.
I always loved Sammy Davis Jr. He was such an amazingly talented artist -- singer, dancer, actor, comedian, entertainer. He was no Mr. Bojangles, though he did an amazing performance of the song. He was a mega star, unique, one of a kind, like Frank Sinatra. There'll never be another Sammy Davis Jr.
Sammy was one of the greatest performers of our time. Shout out also to Jerry Jeff Walker. This lyrics of this song so perfectly animate the story it's like watching a little one-act play.
jeff Walker wrote it but Sammy made it his! It took Sammy back to the struggles he saw us Blacks experience, the indignities, the inhumanities. Old Man River is another song, he personalized and told it like no other. Sammy didn't sing songs, he told them.

Sammy experienced a lot, good and bad. He was such a talent and he made many people happy. Not everyone can say that. I would have loved to have met him.
i spent a lot of years as a carnie during the '70s, and even though i could never dance a lick, this song still touches the old carnie in me. and oh yeah, i'm grateful to have been born at a time that allowed me to appreciate sammy from a rat packer right through some of his best work, but sometimes i really wish i hadn't out-lived him.
Also when they did roasts they could take a joke. they teased each other about race, everything and the laughed. today you would get sued. amazing how thin skinned we have become, he was a guy who was cool, smooth and probably fought a lot of his own personal demons, like the rest of us.
Good to hear you say that, because he received grave criticism from radicals during the Sixties, who had suffered blatant, soul crushing and downright racism in life. However, he chose a different path than some others did as a result of America's shameful path. Many more people should learn how to do something, and be motivated to doing it well, especially in the face of adversity and ignorance. Sammy is a role model.
From Wikipedia: According to Walker, a murder on the 4th July weekend of 1965 precipitated the arrest of all the street people in the area. In the crowded cell, a disheveled homeless old man began to talk to Walker who had been arrested earlier for drunkenness. The man told various stories of his life but the tone darkened after 'Mr Bojangles' recalled his dog who'd been run over. Someone then asked for something to lighten the mood and the man obliged with a tap dance. The man was white.
absolutely one of a kind a one man entertainment machine a rare thing sammy could appear on stage t.v theatre movies and we just loved him what he projected is indefinable but boy it made us happy
Never heard that explanation before. When he died, he was in debt. In a sad sort of way, I guess he DID become Mr. Bojangles. A truly magnificent performer.
not really he was still better off then Bojangles.....but he gt sick during his tours with Frank and Dean Martin so that cut into his money he was trying to earn to pay the govt.
This song is about an old dancer who used to be somebody. But over the years he's been forgotten, beaten down, and lives now on old memories of what he used to be fueled by drinking. And the reason Mr. Davis owns this song is because he grew up during a time when his father, uncle and himself were considered seond class citizens but who because of their talent were allowed to preform. And if not for Sammy alot of people would have forgotten about all those great dancers who came before him.
He neverer planned to sing it but was coaxed into it by Tom Jones when he was a gust on the show. Originally Jones was going to sing it with Sammy doing the dance moves in silhouette. They rehearsed it that way but after Jones and the rest of the crew saw it they told Sammy he just had to do the whole thing.
