David Robert Jones, Dave jay, Major Tom, Cloud, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Halloween Jack, The thin white duke, Tao jones ... todos el mismo DAVID BOWIE....!!!!
My Uncle John loved Bowie. He was the first person to play his music for me, and he died today. so I'm playing this, his favorite Bowie full blast and trying not to cry.
One of the greatest songs by the greatest solo songwriter behind George Harrison. Never heard the master's version. Timeless. It should be the national anthem. God save the queen? King? Terry. Julie. Waterloo Sunset rules!!!!!
David Bowie was a stepping stone for so many people. God bless you David for all you did, we will never forget you. You are indeed a blessing. We are missing you!!!
The break in David Bowie's voice adds such poignancy. "As long as they gaze on / Waterloo Sunset They are in Paradise " - And so may you be, David. Thanks for everything.
This is an artist that had nothing to prove but show love and respect to a great band and superb songwroting, Bowie was a massive Kinks fan ,think of that before you compare this to the original, this is a tribute nothing more nothing less !!
Yo it's 2023, almost 2024, nearly 8 years since bowie passed, and this comment nearly made me cry, just thinking about the emotion behind it. Bowie was so great. Oddly enough I miss him more now than when he first passed because I've grown to adore his music so much. Blackstar was what really got me into Bowie, oddly enough. Such strange things, emotions.
This song means so much to me. Having lost touch long ago, I'm now keen to find anyone else who lived at Waterloo Fire Station squat in 87-88. The night The Clash played at our party, setting fire to a VW Beetle inside the fire station singing London's Burning one of many wild memories.
Casey Turner Ha! Cheers;) I forgot writing this, but hope it'll jog someone's memory. Before I moved down to London I met Nico and spent a few hours with her in Prestwich (Manchester) the year Bowie played there. So you've probably an idea of the scene I mean;) Love HX. Over 50 now, but I'll never fuckin surrender ! :)
Oh yes hearing his voice definitely puts one under a spell- it's hypnotic and enticing. I just can't adequately describe how wonderful David's voice is.
I noticed Mr Ringo Starr sitting on the left at the very beginning of the vid. He really got around in those days. He hung out as well with England's other biggest glam rocker at the time, Marc Bolan.
Mig21
Dirty old river, must you keep rolling Flowing into the night? People so busy, make me feel dizzy Taxi light shines so bright But I don't need no friends As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise Every day I look at the world from my window But chilly, chilly is the evening time Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine) Terry meets Julie Waterloo station Every Friday night But I am so lazy, don't want to wander I stay at home at night But I don't feel afraid As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise Every day I look at the world from my window But chilly, chilly is the evening time Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine) Millions of people swarming like flies 'round Waterloo underground But Terry and Julie cross over the river Where they feel safe and sound And they don't need no friends As long as they gaze on Waterloo Sunset They are in paradise Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine) Waterloo sunset's fine
"beautiful" i loved how you captured moments from mr. bowie's early stuff. my favorite song of his was "let's dance" and when as a little girl back in the 80s, that was one song that truly made me get up and find that soul in dance. lol. thank you for sharing. and thank you mr. bowie for sharing your your gift. best,
As one critic called it "The Most Beautiful Song in the English Language". If it isn't, I'd like to know what is. RIP Bowie, and thank you for doing highly respectable justice to this most beautiful song as originally written by Ray Davies and performed by the Kinks.
It's so beautiful to hear his voice in another classical song! There are so many excellent things to discover, he keeps me being amazed and impressed permanently.
How great to hear one of my all time favourite songs sung by one of my all time favourite artists? David's voice is perfect for this, and what a brilliant collection of pictures accompanying it! Thanks for sharing :)
Hi - like many on here I don't think we realised that Bowie did a cover version of this- having just listened to the original my finger hovered over the play button and simply out of curiousity decided to listen to this version - very glad I did his vocals sound wonderful and although I still prefer the original its a testimant to his artistry that he can create a version that he made uniquely his own-still play Sorrow which I bought when I was 14 -all time favourite is Golden Years epitomised Bowie at his coolest for me.
Well me old son, you can actually hire a river ferry boat for a memorial service and then scatter your ashes, it is moored at the Embankment by Waterloo Bridge.
"greatest song writer" We were talking about lyricists, and you're trying to shift the argument, perhaps because (with occasional nice exceptions) Lennon wasn't a great lyricist. Being the best lyricist in the _Beatles_ doesn't make you Elvis Costello as a lyricist, let alone Ray Davies.
"Song writer and lyricist are the same thing" Wrong. When Bernie Taupin and Elton John write songs together, for instance, Bernie writes the words, Elton writes the music, and they are collaborating as songwriters. Google can't tell me what _I_ think about the relative merits of Ray Davies and John Lennon as lyricists. Or what you think, if you're smart.
Now you're muddling how _influential_ John Lennon's lyrics have been with how good they are, again a shifting of the argument -- which I'm guessing is something you do by "intuition"...
When and where was this version recorded? 'Waterloo Sunset' has been my favourite song since I was 12 (a long time ago) and I think this is an amazing cover version. Bowie's loss is tragic. What will we do without him?
+David Paradise Did you know Bruce Springsteen's "Growing Up" was a bonus track on "Pinups?" I adore Bowie's covers. Genius. We will always have his records, tapes, videos, etc.
This hero had his own heroes that very much happen to be mine: Ray Davies, Scott Walker. . . . . The instrumental creativity and vocal approaches here are beautiful and respectful towards arguably the greatest single to ever come out of arguably, in '66/67, when I lived there, the greatest city in the world.
The great thing about masterpieces like Waterloo Sunset is that even covers sound amazing! I suggest you also check out Def Leppard's cover of this song
+sierra maestra normally i don't like cover versions. there are only 2 ways to do cover versions either copy it completely of do something totally different with the song Bowie ( whom i will always adore) chose the former and it worked
Definitely prefer the Kinks version. I like Bowie, and I like the change of tempo he's brought to his version but the added glamour just takes too much away from what made the original so simply beautiful.
Personal preference, I think. This version is great, though I do agree the original can't be beaten. That said, this is a lovely cover in it's own right.
Bowie has always been able to make great music, but he also has a great ability to take other people's hits & somehow make them his own.. Great cover. I love his cover of "Cactus" by the Pixies & his performance of Simon & Garfunkel's "America" from the Concert for 9/11 too.
When Ray Davies of the Kinks wrote this it was originally called "Liverpool Sunset", but the Beatles got so big he changed it to "Waterloo Sunset".If you visit London the panorama from the South Bank at Waterloo is one of the best in the city.
You can’t beat the original regardless of how great David B was , many music people have mentioned ray Davies as being one of the best if not the best song writers of all time a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by David as it’s his tribute to ray and the song !! and BTW the song was written about the Mersey originally and not the Thames it was titled Liverpool sunset that dirty old river was intended to be the Mersey !! my all time favourite song that I want played at my end
I love the kinks Waterloo Sunset but I love it even more now I know that David Bowie covered it.
Me too!
I prefer the Kinks version 100% but love David Bowie
elliott smith covered it to
djordy vdh
No fucking way. Oh man, I have to hear that when this is over.
Elliot smith
My Uncle John loved Bowie. He was the first person to play his music for me, and he died today. so I'm playing this, his favorite Bowie full blast and trying not to cry.
Reading this instantly brought tears to my eyes. Sorry for your loss, please don`t feel bad for shedding tears for a loved one.
@policemanandrew love to you Andrew❤
@@LuciusNekromanteion Oh Lucius, thank you so much❤
What a beautiful tribute.
@Vivian Loeb I meant tribute to @Saunie H's Uncle John! But I agree David Bowie is so missed. Your father was knew him?
Waterloo Sunset performed by the Kinks is one of the greatest songs ever written by the master Ray Davis
Daves version is brilliant
One of the greatest songs by the greatest solo songwriter behind George Harrison. Never heard the master's version. Timeless. It should be the national anthem. God save the queen? King? Terry. Julie. Waterloo Sunset rules!!!!!
Cheers from germany 😉🎉😉🍷🍀
This song is so beautiful and so is David Bowie
David Bowie was a stepping stone for so many people. God bless you David for all you did, we will never forget you. You are indeed a blessing. We are missing you!!!

And so may you be, David. Thanks for everything.
Happy birthday, Uncle John. You and Bowie up there in heaven.🙏
This is perfection, one of the best songs ever with Bowie singing ❤
fab song !!! thx ray davies.
Listen to the cover of this beautiful song by Elliott Smith ~ awesome
This is an artist that had nothing to prove but show love and respect to a great band and
superb songwroting, Bowie was a massive Kinks fan ,think of that before you compare this to the original, this is a tribute nothing more nothing less !!
Bowie was a huge fan of The Kinks and especially the song writing of Ray Davies
Yepper. Where Have all the Good Times Gone, Pin Ups.
Yea he was they sang together oftain.
except the kinks are better

It is not possible that Bowie is gone. I just can't accept it, still. Thank you for sharing this gem!
He is one of the lucky ones who are not forgoten as most of us are fairly soon when we are gone,
One of my favourite songs covered by the genius that is Bowie
This song means so much to me. Having lost touch long ago, I'm now keen to find anyone else who lived at Waterloo Fire Station squat in 87-88. The night The Clash played at our party, setting fire to a VW Beetle inside the fire station singing London's Burning one of many wild memories.
+Howard Downes Wow. I've been to many a squat party and none of my stories even come close. I'm in awe.

I djed a few of those parties at the Fire Station - Major Jump.
great story! i do hope somebody sees this after the last couple years, magic time
What a phenomenon, thank you, David Bowie.
GOD SAVE THE KINKS AND BOWIE !!!!!
heard this on the radio when I was a child. then discovered The Kinks. life-changing.
Oh yes hearing his voice definitely puts one under a spell- it's hypnotic and enticing. I just can't adequately describe how wonderful David's voice is.
More than brilliant. I am overwhelmed. David Bowie, such presence he has. What a loss when he left us.
I noticed Mr Ringo Starr sitting on the left at the very beginning of the vid. He really got around in those days. He hung out as well with England's other biggest glam rocker at the time, Marc Bolan.
Whoa!!! I never heard this before! This is an amazing cover, wow!
Mig21
This is what a cover should be. It keeps the words and spirit of the original, but it fits the artist singing it as if he wrote it himself.
Love both versions
What can I add? Ray Davies genius - and knighted at last. And this is a superb reverential working of Ray's classic - 50 years old this year!!
Are you kidding? Wow, Bowie gave a tribute to everyone! Love it.
I think both these versions are great. The Kinks is softer with the guitar giving it that "dreamy" feeling. Bowie makes it dreamy with his voice
If I wasn't saddened enough today, then there's this.
RIP Bowie you will be missed
...had no idea David Bowie even did a version of this....!!
im a kinks fan,and i love this cover, rip david bowie
Thanks never heard this before. He picked great songs for Pinups. Love the man and his music. All of it.
I am in love with this.
Dirty old river, must you keep rolling

But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine)

Every Friday night
But I am so lazy, don't want to wander
I stay at home at night
But I don't feel afraid
As long as I gaze on

I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine)

lovely version of this fab song mr bowie does it justice ..gone but not forgotten...x
Bowie, as usual, does a great cover. My favourite cover is, See Emily Play, it's on Pin ups.

May this great man rest in peace.
This version is simply magical ❤❤❤❤
I am not normally a fan of covers, but I do love this version of The Kinks' Waterloo Sunset.

Wow. Never knew this even existed.
I long ago decided that if i could figure out how, i want my ashes scattered on the Thames from Waterloo Bridge...
I'll smoke a spliff to that, aye.
Well me old son, you can actually hire a river ferry boat for a memorial service and then scatter your ashes, it is moored at the Embankment by Waterloo Bridge.
Bowie covered this oh what a find ,, going straight into my favourites X)
A great version, but Ray Davies - what can anyone say? The greatest lyricist ever to come out of England - should be their poet laureate.
in the early days bryan ferry was a great lyricist, and bowie's favourite at the time
Ray Davies is a far greater lyricist than John Lennon.

+Sheenagh M - yes, it is almost better than the original, and that was sublime. RIP David - on to glory.
+Sheenagh M This was a bonus track from Bowie's "Reality" album in 2003.
+Sheenagh M you mirror me
+David Paradise Did you know Bruce Springsteen's "Growing Up" was a bonus track on "Pinups?" I adore Bowie's covers. Genius. We will always have his records, tapes, videos, etc.
+David Paradise - Yup- it was only available as a bonus track on the Japanese import of "Reality"
This is Bowie’s biggest influence, hands down. Sure he’s got a lot more influences, but none of them come close as what he got from the 60s Kinks.
Stuff like this makes you feel happy to be alive, especially at a time like this when we all need reminded.
Respect to Sir Raymond Douglas Davies CBE for this sublime composition. Bowie knew how good it was

Been a Bowie fan since I was 12 , 57 now, never new he covered Waterloo sunset , wonderful
I HAD NO IDEA THIS HAPPENED AND IM A WATERLOO SUNSET MOOD THIS IS BEAUTIFUL BYE IMMA GO CRY
This has been a favourite song of mine for decades and I think I like this version as much as the Kinks
lo amo es hermoso genial yo tb lo amo con locura
Ya somos dos es y sera eternamente unico al menos para mi😍😍😍😍
Makes you feel so old.
Love this version!!
How good is this???
+sierra maestra normally i don't like cover versions. there are only 2 ways to do cover versions either copy it completely of do something totally different with the song Bowie ( whom i will always adore) chose the former and it worked
+sierra maestra I love David Bowie, but the Kinks fucking nailed this song as far as I'm concerned.
It's an interpretation - but loses the emotion of the original
Check out the Last Shadow Puppet's cover!
If it weren't so good, it'd be sacrilege, but it is, so it's not.
last shadow puppets cover of moonage daydream at Glastonbury was amazing
Definitely prefer the Kinks version. I like Bowie, and I like the change of tempo he's brought to his version but the added glamour just takes too much away from what made the original so simply beautiful.
I agree, although I'll add that Cathy Dennis' version in easily my favorite.
I think this version would be way better without these keys
Exactly. The simplicity of the original really made it shine for me.
Personal preference, I think. This version is great, though I do agree the original can't be beaten. That said, this is a lovely cover in it's own right.
Cover versions can be Crap but I really like this one cheers for uploading
I agree that covers usually suck, but my two favorite covers are this and Elton's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
Bowie could turn a so-so song into a masterpiece and did it repepeatedly.
roger blackburn You're right, but this was not one of those occasions. This was already a beautiful song before Bowie did this lovely version.
I had the brief pleasure of meeting him when I was with CBS records. He was pretty much great as well as this in my opinion.
The original was hardly a so-so song! It is probably one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.
Always lo e this song and bowie!!
Why in the world did he ever get those beautiful teeth 'corrected'?????... they were so wonderfully perfectly unique!
Yea, I miss those gorgeous fucked up Bowie teeth. Excessive dental work is erasing our signature looks & streamlining everything. Sigh.
I love the kinks and bowie, so this is perfect
Just brilliant 😁
Great cover
Well done David
I also love your see Emily play and Sorrow
This is the BEST COVER EVER
I adore this song :)

Must be the best Bowie-recording since "Absolute Beginners" 1985.
Gold. Pure gold.
Did you realise that in this video there are "black stars " where you change from one clip to another?
Spooky huh?
shaneegh, we could die with him, bowie. or live without! but he could also live through us!
