I'd say the opposite. The man did a great work separating his personal life and his career, to the point where David Bowie and David Jones had their own lives essentially. It's hard to tell if he was still playing characters in his later years.
@@theonlyantony he shows complete respect for Walker with this. Bowie recorded many covers where he added to or maybe showed some inadequacies of the originals, if that makes sense oh, or he just straight-up get them better by making some changes or simply just by being Bowie. But this one sounds just like the way Walker did it vocals which let's be honest I've listened to a lot of Walker now which was new to me until today I'll admit it but he clearly was a big Bowie fan at least you know vocally but I mean music....just everything. I think it's pretty nice tip of the cap honestly to Walker's music and had to be pretty cool if he was still around then I'm not sure but if so to hear Bowie's version of that song I'm sure delighted him hey what a great song.
Black Tie White Noise is one of my favorite Bowie's albums, there is just something irresistibly sexy about the sound of it, this track and Miracle Goodnight especially
When you think about it, their styles are not that much different in register, encapsulating depth and range; Bowie just enriched the original, and you can move on a dance floor to both.
Pamela I’m familiar with a couple of Scott’s more recent albums and collaborations (which are great), but have been meaning to explore his back catalogue for quite some time. Unfortunately, it has taken his passing to remind me to go back and listen to his earlier albums, but I quite look forward to them. RIP
Patriotic Dandelions okay too much hidden detail!!! Hahahahaha but yeah he was more appealing at his age even if he was 45 or older!! But not just looks but his voice and personality really made him appealable!! Ohhh that piano part!! 😍😳😂😂😂
Even after more than a year, it is still hard to accept he is gone. And now I've just lost my beloved husband as well! I hope they have met in heaven and are talking about what a hardcore fan I am of both of them! I turned my husband on to Bowie and he really liked him, but not as much as me. Bowie saved my life at age 16 when I heard "Space Oddity" on an underground radio station. He changed it forever when I saw him from the tenth row at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia a couple of years later for the Diamond Dogs Tour. Like nothing I'd ever seen in my life and like nothing I've ever seen since and I'm sixty-two years old now. I will love them both until the day I go to join them. I miss them both terribly. Bless them both, oh universe!
3 years have passed, but I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear of your husband's passing. Bowie has affected my life greatly as well. He was such a bright, kind, creative soul who brought joy and hope to so many. I hope you and the people you care about are keeping happy, healthy, and safe
David Bowie was and always will be the DOCTOR WHO of music......So many ch...changes...I know he's OUTSIDE... somewhere.. he ain't no NAIGHBORHOOD THREAT, just a SPACE ODDITY...tell his wife he loves her very much...she knows.... Rip David❤

Scott had a purity in his voice a style of phrasing very few singers can approach including David Bowie. RIP Scott Walker “the sun ain’t gonna shine anymore, the moon ain’t gonna rise in the sky the tears are always clouding your eyes when you’re without love baby”
How did I miss this gem? David had the ability to wear whatever he wanted and sing what ever he wanted. David was gorgeous. Thanks for posting a beautiful song.
I think this version is fantastic- scott's is beautiful and haunting - but this has a driving, galvanising sound that is amazing and the great droning middle 8 is just perfect - don't compare with Scott - they are both awesome in their own way.
Also, you can hear the nineties in the sound and vision. He was really busy here, touring and contemplating his children’s names before conceiving them with Iman. Fabulous living for sure.
A buried treasure indeed... I can't believe finding this today on hearing the news that Scott Walker (Scott Engel) had passed away at age 76. Legend is an overused word but it applies to David Bowie and tonight I think I will include Scott in that thinking as well.
Amazing, amazing, amazing.... I really love David's cover of this Scott Walker's great piece of music. I have been a hardcore Bowie fan for mere 25 years now, and now I am finally beginning my jump into the sea called Scott Walker's music. I can't wait.
Bowie Looking and Sounding GREAT as Ever with many memories of his musical talent as he leaves a Gift of a new album BLACKSTAR, soon after THE NEXT DAY!Only Bowie can cover Scott Walker so superbly!
I had no idea this was a Scott Walker song. I had heard Bowie's version first on Black Tie White Noise. I had not listened to this in ages until tonight while reading the news about Scott Walker. The direct influence was not apparent to me until now. I'm a bit speechless. Both versions are doing it for me right now. I am now going back to relisten to what I had known about Scott Walker. Bowie was my hero and Bowie was influenced by Scott. My apologizes for not being more "aware" of earlier. Today has been such a day for revelations for me. Peace.
Absolutely Frikken Gutted THIS is Gonna take a long time to Sink in can't Believe Probably the Best Singer/Artist with the Exception of Freddie Mercury of This Century has left us..and what are we left with??? that TWAT Bieber??? or some other complete and total Shat!! R.I.P Goblin King Mr David Bowie you LEGEND 💙
Miss Florence Welsh recently quoted in an interview: do you want intense, uncompromising music with casualities in the rock world due to too intense lives or do you want more moderate songs (and healthy good lookers?). It resumes the whole evolution I guess. I find him incredibly good in Black Tie White Noise. A very good surprise after his career obviously took another course in 1984. That, Outside and Black Star were the very good ones. Tin Machine had some good bits (ao the sooooo underrated You belong in Rock 'n Roll). Amazing though how he kept his production at a more than decent level in spite of the fact he got less edgy after 1980, which is what you get when you trade cocaine for cafeine ;-)
This has to be the most fantastic image of Bowie ever! Everything that is cool, suave, spectacular, enigmatic and mesmerising about Bowie is in this. Even 35 years later, I still think you're amazing. You can be my Hero any day.
I thoroughly recommend Scott Walker's album of Jacques Brel songs : an artist that Bowie and Walker greatly admired and whose thought provoking songs they both covered .
Just dropping by to see my love..and oh yes to let it be known he was is and always will be on my mind I notice everyone's gone quiet like it was just a phase, I was sick of the sycophants when he died and that hasn't changed.
What a gentleman. I was a teen when I bought the cd Black Tie White Noise. I'm his age now from back then. I also would say this was his most depressing period of his life time career.
I was a huge fan of the Walker Brothers since I first heard them in the 1960's. I bought the album by them that contained this song and almost threw it away. I positively despised it. Then I heard this version by Bowie and I absolutely love it! What a difference...wow!
Lyrics: There's no hold The moving has come through The danger passing you Turns its face into the heat and runs the tunnels It's so cold The dark dug up by dogs The stitches torn and broke The raw meat fist you choke Has hit the bloodlite Glass traps open and close on nite flights Broken necks feather weights press the walls Be my love, we will be gods on nite flights With only one promise, only one way to fall Glass traps open and close on nite flights Broken necks feather weights press the walls Be my love, we will be gods on nite flights With only one promise, only one way to call On nite flights On nite flights On nite flights Only one way to fall On nite flights On nite flights On nite flights Only one way to fall
The original is clearly Bowie-influenced, so it's fitting that he would cover it! Both versions are in my "Bowie: covers" playlist. Thanks for the upload!
It does, but the album this comes from was a massive inspiration for Bowie and Eno during his "Berlin trilogy". Both have admitted they thought it sounded like the future and it helped form some of the sounds from those albums.
@@oniwabanjs Nite Flights was released in 1978, Low and "Heroes" came out in 1977, so it is impossible that Bowie and Eno was inspired by this. Lodger came in 1979, but sounds nothing like this. So in this case the inspiration went the other way.
@@ivankaramasov These are the words of Eno and Bowie - I think from the Scott Walker documentary a few years ago. Both credit this album with forming their sound. Maybe they got confused about which album, however. Nonetheless they both clearly said this album was a huge inspiration to their collaboration.
Always amazed how David did not need anything except to be himself. He was a living work of art.

His hero was Scott Walker. What a fucking homage here. What a voice. What a man. I miss you Sailor, I still can't believe your work is done.
Now we miss them both.
Awr Sailor...yes indeed, miss both him and David. Assume you were/are a Bnetter too? :)
And yes, Scott Walker as well.
Who was Scott Walker...and Sailor?
Whilst Scott Walker was someone DB admired it was Little Richard that was his hero.
His own backing vocals, masterpiece!!!

Totally!
The wedding LP, oozing with love. RIP GOD; Scott as well.
I agree, fantastic album.
RIP David and Scott. Wonderful song written by Scott and covered brilliantly by David.
Yes both brilliant in their own way R.I.P Scott and David 💔💔
His vocals... So perfect, nobody like David Bowie. Perfect.

You should check Dario and the Clear Optic Nerve CD.
Nite fligjts...is he referring to astral traveling while we sleep ?
His voice is nothng compared to Walker's...
Scott Walker? Who wrote this 😆
#RIP Scott Walker, two legends gone from the planet.

Criminally underrated album was black tie white noise.

One icon covering another icon, lovely. Bowie was so generous and his star blazed for decades, but not nearly long enough.
Lovely indeed.
