  • Over the past decade, the US military has shifted the way it fights its wars, deploying more unmanned systems in the battlefield than ever before.
    Today there are more than 7,000 drones and 12,000 ground robots in use by all branches of the military.
    These systems mean less American deaths and also less political risk for the US when it takes acts of lethal force - often outside of official war zones.
    But US lethal drone strikes in countries like Pakistan have brought up serious questions about the legal and political implications of using these systems.
    Fault Lines looks at how these new weapons of choice are allowing the US to stretch the international laws of war and what it could mean when more and more autonomy is developed for these lethal machines.

    We are doing great job at creating intelligent machines to fight our battles, now if we could just create some intelligent politicians to run our countries.. We would not need to spend all the effort and money on the tech toys.

    This report was fine until the 'experts' started telling us that robots will be smarter than us. Its true that in terms of pure processing power and data access, machines may be able to out perform most people, but in reality this isn't intelligence. Intelligence is based upon problem solving, and fundamentally self consciousness. The notion that we can create a robotic brain that excels our own when we don't even understand how our own works is absurd. Robots will never be smarter than us.

  • @IIIFrenchyIII
    @IIIFrenchyIII 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    What an appallingly simple hypothesis, "The robots are gonna be smarter than us!" It requires the right roots, the right knowledge to grow into something great. Robots are clearly another medium of Human thought and we ALWAYS loose information through mediums.

    Glitches or bugs in artificial intelligence are really difficult to predict , so this is really a dilemma of the autonomous systems when get very complex , self awareness is one possibility , because nobody knows what self awareness is or how is developed . So this glitch you talking about is called terminator for me the chance exists .

    There is no doubt in my mind that there will be a Data, a Lore and even a Borg, the question is only when not whether. It boils down to adapting to the new reality not trying to stop it. Law and rules will follow as the number of precedents goes up.

    just think in the 50s things like this were only dreams and in such a short time they have become reall. i think that a human element should always be required to use drones to attack, make everything else automatic just not that part. i think that is the best safety feature that we can put on drones.

    We should keep progressing with robotic technology. When artificial intelligence is superior to human intelligence it will be able to work out a solution to human cultural differences other than using violence. Although we are smart creatures, we seem to deny the fact we will ultimately descend to our primitive impulses to resolve a problem... which is violence. Lacking these primitive survival impulses that override reason, artificial intelligence will provide us with ethical answers.

    Pakistan “RISING” has established itself as part of a very dynamic regional paradigm amalgamating it geographically with Central Asia, Middle East and Europe. While also situated at the gateway to the Arabian Gulf, Pakistan will also have access to the waters of the Caspian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Arabian Sea, China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. This positions Pakistan at the crossroads to peace and prosperity in the world and economic well-being as well as military clout

    At least 80% of those killed in tribal areas of Pakistan are innocent civilians, whose relatives then turn into militants. For every civilian killed by a drone strike, 10 more sign up for the Taliban. When the drone strikes started back in 2004 there were less than 5000 Taliban in the region. Now after the death of thousands of people in drone attacks, there are over 20,000 Taliban in the region.

    Will all these robots be 'un-hackable'? Is it even possible to build a system that can't be compromised? What happens if the enemy takes control of these systems and either captures them or even turns them against their original controllers? It looks like it's already been done - case in point is highly credible claims that the Iranians captured a US drone.

    Should men engage in warfare is a philosophical question. My point is, that military robots wont make warfare any more barbaric or murderous that it already is, and that there are true horrors of war that jourlanist should shed light upon. Instead, they try to catch the viewer's attention by some fancy sci-fi topic such as "Military robots". Its pretty much a hype. The theme is far LESS deserving attention than the media try to stirr about it.

    @alfredaskeljung I see your point, but personally I still disagree with the premise that robots will ever be smarter than us. Despite the fact that we can image the brain better than before, at a fundamental level we don't really know how a billion to the billion binary connections can produce consciousness. And I suspect that we never will, simply because of the sheer complexity of the issue. I'm a med student and the thing that strikes me when studying neurology is how little we know.
