🇨🇴 Colombia's Gold Rush | Fault Lines

  • Gold fever is sweeping across South America. Nowhere is it more lethal than in Colombia, where the gold rush has become a new axle in Colombia's civil war. Turf wars are erupting between paramilitaries, and leftist rebel groups fighting to take control of mining regions. It's fueling an old ideological conflict and has displacing hundreds of people.
Helicopter raids by the Colombian Army on small community mining collectives have become commonplace, and the Colombian government is accused of targeting poor workers to protect big business interests, and operating with impunity from human rights violations.
Thousands have fled their homes where land is violently contested, and others live in fear they'll be removed from their land, arrested, or killed.
The multinationals are flooding in too. With gold now worth around $1,500 an ounce, everyone is getting in on the act, including North American mining companies. Colombia's pro-business mentality has seen arbitrary concessions by the state sold to multinational companies, often on indigenous land.
Fault Lines traveled to Colombia to speak to the people caught in the middle. The rural workers and artisan miners who've mined for generations, and some whose ancestors were enslaved during the first gold rush centuries ago. Others are former coca farmers, put out of work by the US-led Plan Colombia.

Pl. increase duration to at least 50min. It is difficult to get a complete picture on such a complex topic in 25min. Excellent documentary.

I think someone would have to think twice before buying gold accessories like necklaces and stuff, the raw materials of those are being ripped with terrible conditions for the locals and its not only in Colombia

Although, I don't agree w/ the displacement of indigenous people for the sake of exploiting the land of it's minerals, since it's always a one sided. The corp. manager is refreshingly honest about the tactics which will be employed. I appreciate his honesty no matter how much I disagree w/ it.

Why can't they afford to build the mine right or do meet all the proper environmental standards? They are mining GOLD! Are they THAT miserly?? Get them to close the mine till they do it right.

There is a simple fix, use sugar tree palm leaves, it captures all the gold without using mercury or cyanide and is 100% sustainable without harming the rivers and waterways. simples!

Great documentary, only one question though... Why would Colombia sell a mountain filled with gold to a Canadian company when it can be mined to further expand not only the local economy but also the countries as well?

leave the gold in them land...dejen el oro en la tierra, why you want a gold in the bank saving?? Dejen el oro en las tierras, para qué quieren el oro en una caja en el banco???
Ecological resources that are worth that gold bars, water is priceless, wildlife and three is more valuable for all the world...no hay recursos ecológicos que valgan la pena deteriorar por unos lingotes, el agua no tiene precio, la fauna y la flora es mas valiosa....para el mundo entero.
