I've read all of Peake's novels and I think he was a genius, a literary prodigy and a true artist. His books impressed me and awed me like nothing else. That said... if you're going into this looking for a normal fantasy book, it's not going to end well. There's a plot but it's hidden and strange and everything goes slow. So for people who like to get hooked on great plot archs and want a fast read this is definitely a no-go! But, if one takes the time to read slower and try to visualize and feel what Peake is presenting then he's in for a treat. His descriptions and atmosphere set-ups are unmatched. His philosophical quips, especially on character behaviors and analysis, are still totally relevant today. For me, Peake's three main Gormenghast books are straight 5s but I can understand why people might not like them at all.
Oh man, a 1-star prediction for Titus Groan, and a curse for me. 😅 I chose this book because I was reading it at the time I won the contest, and was thoroughly impressed with it (for all the reasons listed in AntonisMatakos' comment). Now I'm fully aware this is not the kind of book you usually enjoy, but I thought this novel had character and would make for an interesting read. Hope it won't prove to be too much of a chore. 😅
You may not get into Peake from a generational standpoint, but they truly are literary masterpieces. I read them in the 70’s when I was really into Tolkien and Donaldson, and I know you really don’t care as much for Lord of the Rings. You’ve read so many fantasy series that came so long after the origins of fantasy that I understand why it’s hard to get into the older ones. I’m so glad I got to read the greats of Sci Fi and Fantasy when they were still wondrous and imaginative. It’s like new generations that have been brought up on 4K graphics trying to enjoy handmade special effects of long ago. Most just won’t get it or appreciate it.
By and large Matt I'd say we don't have similar taste but i always appreciate your rationalisation and communication of what does and doesn't work for you.
Gormenghast is brilliant but even ignoring your issue with older books you'll hate it. There is no normal plot or character work. Don't approach it like a fantasy book, instead imagine you've been asked to read a Charles Dickens book and you'll have a less bad time.

I'm really interested in this trilogy, have you gone on to read any more of the series?
Lol it's all good! I'm just having fun 😁
@@noahnaterrr113 Not yet, but I fully intend to.

Adding to that I did not like Beyond Redemption years ago, as in at all, but you were so enthusissthic about it I might actually read it again.
I had you pegged at 1-star for Titus Groan but now everyone will too 😅
Beyond Redemption is now on Kindle Unlimited, and as my free trial runs out in December, will be able to read it 🙌
OOH! Can't wait to hear what you think of KoP by Nell.
Janny makes me weak at the knees. Such a beautiful writer. Id be shocked if you disliked this one.
No stormlight this month :O
I was expecting rhythm this month and 5 next
4 and 5 next month. 4 will be ALMOST done this month, but not quite.
The TBR gods look fondly upon you
Thought for sure Rhythm of War would be here this month
I'll be mostly finished with it this month, but won't actually be done with it until a couple days into December.

I dont think youll like Titus Groan either, defo not your kind of book 😂 I didn't connect to Gormhenghast either

I’m in the minority, but I hated Titus Groan. Tedious with pretty much no story. It was difficult to finish.
