Let me explain, baba and other 🇨🇳 company’s list here and HK .. but listed here only literally to access our capital markets, while they ban 🇺🇸 companies in HK so we can’t access their capital markets. They list in the caymans .. look it up. It’s basically theft and that’s why big institutions banks have been dumping china stocks after DIDI exposed it
Alibaba is unlike most Chinese companies because it has a global footprint. Nearly 200 million consumers outside of China. BABA has been around since 1999 and is entrenched in Chinese e-commerce. Most well known brand in China.

Great video and breakdown of the revenue streams, Alibaba really is a conglomerate! The potential for large growth in cloud computing is very promising. The moat, or The Iron Triangle, should protect Alibaba from its competitors! It's also reassuring to see value investing legends buying in! Let's hope the Chinese government doesn't tighten its tech regulations. Keen for part 2!
To be fair, the moat doesn't mean shit if you're main threat is the CCP. The Risk of the CCP, especially for foreign investors, is very real. The only reason ADRs exist is because china isn't enforcing existing regulation. If china goes after the VIE you are fucked as foreign investor and lose everything.

Definitely not deep value, and you're clearly a wallstreetbets yolo type speculator. It's currently around fair value and carries significant regulatory risk as China is still a communist dictatorship and has moved against the company in the last few years.

@@NewMoneyTH-cam Pabrai is a fraud that simply parrots real value investors. He bought Baba because he saw munger bought it, not because of any analysis himself. In fact every time he has attempted to invest himself it has been a disaster (just look at his Zinc investment).

Hi Brandon, please make a video on Alibaba's valuation, focusing on growth drivers for each of the business segments (you only touched on Cloud in this video). Tmall and Taobao are the most interesting obviously. As Buffet says you can't invest if you have no idea how the business will develop over the next 5-10 years.

@@GentleBongRips it boils down to the chinese government wanting to keep control unlike in the us where big tech is very powerful. it is risky but seeing revenue, pe ratios and other financials i think its worth the risk, alibaba knows they dont want to upset the government so i think it should be fine for the next couple off years since we just had a series of crackdowns.

Your video is comprehensive but didn't cover many important facts happening recently eg Alibaba is being challenged in the e-commerce segment by more vertical market players like Pinduoduo and Jingdong, and even Bytedance (TikTok's parent company) is entering the e-commerce industry. The big local players have the strength to build their own logistics and websites. Alibaba's biggest undercard - Ant - faces strict regulation. The stock price is kind of a gamble on the future, and the valuation logic has changed after the imagination space has been compressed.
Thanks for a good content. BABA is my top3 holding and I have been adding it while the knife has been dropping. Fundaments are solid and growth potential huge. Political risk (internal and geo) is absolutely there. Here’s one more risk I have not heard much of discussion: case Standard Oil. China won’t give their e-commerce to likes of Coupang or Amazon…but has Alibaba (and Tencent etc) became just too big and powerful at least when looking from COP booth?
I think the economic analysis is great, however the risk side of Alibaba is not on the business side, rather the political risk between the CCP and the US clashing. US de-listing china stocks, or changes in regulation from China could seriously damage international investors. I think understanding this better would be the key to assesing risk and how much of our asset allocation to bet on the stock.
This company is good. Problem is - you cannot own shares of the company directly, you can only get the ADR, and it has been explained that the way this ADR is a source of significant political and regulatory risk.
Baba already had solid upside when it overed around 200$ now its just ridiculously cheap, hopefully I'll be able to expand my position before it starts running.
My advice to everyone panicking right now is to look at history, If the stock market could recover from this coronavirus crisis, the 2008 financial crisis, the Dotcom crash, definitely the market would get through whatever comes next as well.

Glad to see this series. I am especially interested in your future discussion of risks. Alibaba is the most capitalist big business in China. Though it seems many forget, China has an autocratic anti-capitalist government. Property rights are not a thing in China, and certainly western investors in Chinese corporations have no expectations of recourse through the Chinese legal system.
