6,7 and 9 left me with a feeling of emptiness when I finished them, it's like a friend who is going far away and I have to wait for it, that's how good they are.
6, 7 and 10 are my favorites. 9 wasn't bad, but I dunno, somehow I could never quite learn to love it. Honorable mentions: -4, which was the one that got me into the series and made a big impression at the time. -8, which I recall being quite fond of even if it wasn't the same the sort of instant classic as my top three. -12, which I _want_ to love as much as FFX, but it was sort of an uneven experience where some parts were kinda mediocre while others were really, _really_ awesome.
No way, it has to be hundreds by now. Every time I bring FF8 up and show people they are interested. I'm glad I don't start with FF7 Even though I love that game more than FF8, but I still love final fantasy 7 with a fervor that's untouched by eight. And eight has something that's seven can't touch, It's odd but it's there. I have original copies of both of them that I bought myself a long time ago and there's still my favorite final fantasies you can throw lV in between them. XV was the first Final Fantasy i ever played. Man, the interactions between the gang, seeing the little cutscene before sleeping, giving them good morning, the Regalia, beautiful world and amazing characters. There was some point, i was saying "bless you" to Gladio everytime he sneezed. That game made me feel that i was part of the adventure, just because of this feeling, i didn't want to make to the end. I stuck myself for at least five months, before creating courage to finish the game. And i knew i wasn't ready to finish when i cried when i saw the wrecked Regalia, it get's me till today.

It was my first FF game too and i didn't enjoy it too much, i did like the same you mentioned in your comment as in the main characters and the interactions between the party, but the rest? Hell nah, probably the worst hack and slash type combat i've ever experienced (i play a lot of that kind of games) enemies barely react to your attacks and do absurd amounts of damage so 60% of my combats were getting one shotted, incapacitated and using potions to get back in the fight, especially with bosses. The story felt way too rushed and you can tell they changed the direction mid way (Development hell, and it SHOWS) chapter 13 was a pain and chapter 14 is also rushed and too short. Lastly the optimization on PC, when entering combat the game had heavy stutter issues, i had to download a mod that supposedly fixes it but barely (at least for me) so yeah my experience with that game was more bad than good, then i played FF7 Remake and i was ready to destroy it if it disappointed me in the most miniscule thing, and thankfully it wasn't the case, it was way better, now i'm finishing OG 7 and then i'm gonna play 6

I feel like Im one of the few people who likes ff13 it's not the best but I loved the graphics and music and the story was complicated but it had its moments that makes me teary eyed.
The main issue was how linear it was, to me 13-2 was the best of the 3 because 13-3 went back to being linear but this time with a time limit, 13-2 allowed you to travel back and forward to areas or timelines you previously visited allowing for better exploration
13-2 and LR was alright (especially LR), but 13 is one of the worst FF game. Only one FF game was more bad than this and that game is 10-2. 13 was just bad, but 10-2 i just want to banish from existence.

@AerionTargaryen 98 10 had it's linearity sure, but this all changes after Zanarkand where you can revisit places you previously went to for things you missed with the airship, this is why 13 gets so much flak and 10 doesn't so much, i don't mind linearity if the whole game isn't linear or the story is compelling, 13 had a story that i didn't exactly care about, 10 had the best story that i have seen from any ff game aside from 14 (currently doing my 1st playthrough of 6 so could be subject to change)
Those 4 games you've mentioned are labelled by critics and most FF fans as the greatest Final fantasy games. It's often debated which among the 4 is truly the best

@@Notactiveatalllll XIII's difficulty is what kept it engaging. It's level up system did enough make the games challenge engaging throughout rather than a precession. Then opened up after the game was finished to go on and beef up for the end game optional quests.
No towns, no side quests, no mini games. No npc interaction. Very little plot, pretty unlikeable characters and the most forgettable villains in the series... I was actually kind of relieved when it was over.
"FFXV may have problems but it also has an irreplicable essence, its universe and its characters are something that you will not find in any other FF or in any other existing game." I said this in another comment. FFXV is a beautiful journey that I wish I could relive it like the first time. The main characters, despite still being tropes, are incredibly realistic (that is not common in FF), so over time you somehow end up feeling part of Noctis's group and his friends. Really a beautiful game
Final Fantasy XV, out of all the Final Fantasies I’ve played, is ranked rather low (I and II being lower), but I will give credit where credit is due. As you’re exploring, when Noctis and his group begin to talk to each other at random times, it honestly makes them seem so much more lifelike and real. I absolutely love that part of the game, and though I haven’t played much of it, Final Fantasy XVI and VIIR don’t seem to have that kind of feel to it. Also Ardyn’s motives were so valid. He had every right to be utterly upset.
People don’t give enough credit to ff12, a lot of the design, mechanics, art style, world building that ppl love about 14 and 16 is directly evolved from 12. It’s an excellent entry into the series. Zodiac age to be specific.
I'm not far into 12 but I've heard it has a few story issues here and there but the best of it completely makes up for it. Also I'm not sure if you've noticed but I've also heard that FF dev teams broke up into two different core teams. That's why some after 6 were much more futuristic and modern (7/8/10/13/15), and the others were more medieval fantasy (Tactics/9/11/12/14/16). I hope 17 also goes the medieval fantasy or maybe even take place in Ivalace assuming the other FF branch will still be busy with FF7R part 3 and KH4.

8 is literally the best one in the series, it had a deep complex storyline, memorable characters, perfect twists ,and a sense of realism to it that you can believe. 8's only crime was that "it wasnt 7." And by that I mean: - 7 was your first major RPG, no, you didnt play 1-5 before 7, you might have played 6 but you were a kid and too young to understand shit yet, so you just nostalgia goggles it - No, you didnt play 1-5 first, you played 7, then 8, then you bought anthology on the PS1, then chronicles, and then origins. It feels like you're on a vacation in the West Coast with your bros. The winding highways, the gorgeous vistas, valleys, and deserts. It looks like a mixture of Oregon, Arizona, and California.
FF8 was my first FF game and it holds a special place in my heart, as I identify a lot with Squall and the story and its themes resonate a lot with me. Plus, I'm a sucker for the junction system. Most original, unique , and outside the box battle system that one could ever think of. FF8 is great.
@pietrobonaldo i dont want to influence your decision too much. Its really up to you. Some people do like 8. The game is brought down by a magic junction system that makes the grind kind of annoying and long. But 8 looks great though (for the time). It has good card mini game though. I straight up dont like the game but you might enjoy it. 9 is just soo good though. All in all, i will never play ff8 again, the only other ff game i can say that about is 2 and maybe 13 since there is 3 of em so i had my fix.
@romulo2624 X being used as a yardstick for linearity, that is the first i have heard of that, yes the story was linear, but at least after Zanarkand, you were free to do whatever TF you wanted, i mean you could attribute much of the same to quite a few of the games in the series, although yes, i would say 13 and 7:Remake were some of the most linear in the series from what i've played
@vitorfranca2112 I feel like the only thing better about 2 is that there are extra outfits and Serah is probably the most underrated FF protagonist ever. Other than that I really enjoy the leveling systems and uniqueness of the playables in 13 more and the story, but 13-2 isn't bad or anything I just wish it felt more different than 13.

@sockaponch yes, the gameplay of 13 still feels very fun to me I really liked switching paradigms to fit the situation it just felt like a job system but more fluid and fresh because they all change roles together. I wanted to love the third one but just couldn't.
I'd more say D&D indirectly created TES. I think RuneQuest(another pen and paper RPG) was a direct contributer. Feel free to correct me, but I remember that the first game was initially going to be a medieval gladiator game, and they just kept adding more. I know they have cited Legends of Valour and Ultima as being big inspirations. JRPGs were initially quite unpopular in the US, especially the FF series, hence why we got the super weird release schedule, as in not getting FFII for many years, and getting FFIV labeled as FFII on SNES, and FFVI labeled as FFIII.
Just to clarify, in case my ramble was confusing. Final Fantasy 2, 3, and 5 were Japan exclusive for many years until international rerelease. I believe 5 got a rerelease on PS1 in 1999. 2 was packaged with 1 remastered in Final Fantasy Origins in 2003. 3 wasnt seen internationally until being remade in 3D on the DS in 2006. In the place of that was 4 released as 2 in 1991, and 6 released as 3 in 1994.

II is ass Backwards leveling system, long winded and uninteresting dungeons filled with millions of empty rooms just to make it go for longer, nonexistent character work as everyone either leaves the party, gets little to no dialogue, or just straight up dies, and lame ass enemies (some of which love to just immediately petrify your whole party). Aside from the music, there is NOTHING to redeem from this game aside from Firion and the Emperor's design. FFII Andys always wanna defend the battle system and call it a skill issue, but NOBODY wants to admit this is the worst dungeon design in the series. And I stand by that.
@@tomato5049If you still think that the leveling system is bad in the PSP version that's legitimately a skill issue. Like the comment above you said you can literally just play it like a normal JRPG and you wouldn't notice anything and honestly? After actually understanding the leveling system I actually like it over a lot over the generic level up system because with FF II allows you to give characters multiple different builds depending on your choice. Making Firion a weaponmaster, Layla an evasion tank, Guy a bruiser tank, Maria a healer/archer and Leon a draining/magic focused damage dealer was easily the most fun I've had in a JRPG to date and yes I've played FF VII and VIII. As for the little to no dialogue that's fine. Especially considering how the WOL in the first game was a blank slate and considering that this is the second game in the series the first one to introduce main characters without blank slates I think you set your expectations too high for that. And the party dying actually made the story more engaging to me by actually driving home just how powerful The Emperor actually is. When Ricard died saving the party from the emperor risen from hell that made the emperor look like an actual threat rather than the wyvern swooping in and taking the party away. As for the whole party getting petrified. Really the only time that's happened for me was with the cicatrices and lizards which you'd already have high enough magic defense to resist it if you actually leveled yourself up accordingly. The battle system wasn't bad either it was just like the rest in my eyes. The stat boosting spells felt really fun to use too and the multiple hits mechanic also was a good addition. Won't disagree on the dungeon designs though. Outside pandemonium there really wasn't any good dungeons.
I feel like 8 is underrated but this could just be nostalgia talking since it was my first ever final fantasy game that introduced me to the franchise I just instantly fell in love with the characters and the story. The junction system was meh but it’s unique so I’ll give them credit for that

Most of character starting weapon got changed like Vaan start weapon used to be mythic sword but in Zodiac age version, he starts with dagger akin for his thievery skill
FF8 is great if you dont break the combat system by skipping every regular encounter. Also asign each character with their own GF's and dont swap them. It adds a fun challenge with careful customization and unique strenghts and weaknesses. You dont need a fully optimized party anyway because the only real tough enemy is beyond the point of no return. That said, all encounters and bosses are now a fun challenge instead of a snoozefest.
FFXVI is not even a RPG and not even a FF. Is like a DMC but with an incredible plot and narrative. So for me its a great game, GOTY actually (yeh, for me is better than TOTK), but not a great Final Fantasy.

Ive never played a final gantasy game that was the same. 10 and 10-2 and 13 and lightning returns are the same storyline and a continuation, sure, but they changed the battle systems and the way thinga worked with each continuation. I feel like 16 is what they wanted 13 to be but realized how off 13 was in its combat system. I can see the DMC aspect though. So far its story is about to surpass 10s and i thought they would never accomplish that. Havnt finished it so ill reserve judgement until i see how it ends.
@@foxgeist3129 The basis of everything Final Fantasy represents is that its an RPG franchise, the QUEEN franchise of RPGs. They took that away from FFXVI, to the point where only a Hack & Slash with a good narrative remained. It may be an incredible game, but the essence of FF is not there, its not a game that encourages you to make an NG+, to explore it to the point of exhaustion, to try a lot of builds until you are satisfied with your work, to play it again and again until you get all the juice out of it. It has nothing of what a real FF have, and therefore, for me this is no longer a Final Fantasy.
@lucaslagoria5934 OK. I could say the same thing the moment they stopped turn based. So it's whatever, I guess. My point is it's still final fantasy in its base form, just an overhaul of fighting mechanics. Same focus on story telling, same monsters, same world styles, magic is still harnessed through special means and crystals, cids still the air guy with a bigger role this time around, your still saving the world from a massive threat, still have a romance trope, still have the same summons,same spells with new ones. Actually, now that I'm sitting here really think about it, the only real difference is literally the combat system in this game and not being able to use party members like others. They even made it linear again instead of open world like 15 was, and I think it's terrible compared to how complex they were able to make linear maps in 10. It is more hack and slash, dissidea is arena combat, all the games up to 10-2 were turn based, and then they overhauled it and made it real time combat. But it's ALL final fantasy in its base form. The creators of final fantasy back then up to now have always stated they never wanted to be the same, and constantly change key things of the last game. I agree with most of your take, except that it's not ff. It is, just not your flavor, which is cool.
Ff xii is by far one of the best rpg experiences in games, the game is very extensive, the story is captivating and the art and sound direction is the best of all games in the final fantasy saga

Sorry but 12 wasn't all that. It was definitely better than 13 and 2 and even 8 imo but its was still lacking the wow 👌 factor of the greats like 7, X, and 4. I mainly couldn't stand the setting and characters. The music of course is top tier like most of Squares osts but i felt like it was trying to do to much and the combat felt slow and drawn out..but hey to each their own of you love it than more power to ya 👊

It was my first FF game too and i didn't enjoy it too much, i did like the same you mentioned in your comment as in the main characters and the interactions between the party, but the rest? Hell nah, probably the worst hack and slash type combat i've ever experienced (i play a lot of that kind of games) enemies barely react to your attacks and do absurd amounts of damage so 60% of my combats were getting one shotted, incapacitated and using potions to get back in the fight, especially with bosses. The story felt way too rushed and you can tell they changed the direction mid way (Development hell, and it SHOWS) chapter 13 was a pain and chapter 14 is also rushed and too short. Lastly the optimization on PC, when entering combat the game had heavy stutter issues, i had to download a mod that supposedly fixes it but barely (at least for me) so yeah my experience with that game was more bad than good, then i played FF7 Remake and i was ready to destroy it if it disappointed me in the most miniscule thing, and thankfully it wasn't the case, it was way better, now i'm finishing OG 7 and then i'm gonna play 6

I feel like Im one of the few people who likes ff13 it's not the best but I loved the graphics and music and the story was complicated but it had its moments that makes me teary eyed.
The main issue was how linear it was, to me 13-2 was the best of the 3 because 13-3 went back to being linear but this time with a time limit, 13-2 allowed you to travel back and forward to areas or timelines you previously visited allowing for better exploration
13-2 and LR was alright (especially LR), but 13 is one of the worst FF game. Only one FF game was more bad than this and that game is 10-2. 13 was just bad, but 10-2 i just want to banish from existence.

But 13 is linear but if you don't mind it, than it's not that bad I feel like ff 10 also has linearity but ppl don't give it flak so ig it's really comes too preference but I loved 13. @AerionTargaryen 98 10 had it's linearity sure, but this all changes after Zanarkand where you can revisit places you previously went to for things you missed with the airship, this is why 13 gets so much flak and 10 doesn't so much, i don't mind linearity if the whole game isn't linear or the story is compelling, 13 had a story that i didn't exactly care about, 10 had the best story that i have seen from any ff game aside from 14 (currently doing my 1st playthrough of 6 so could be subject to change)

@@Notactiveatalllll XIII's difficulty is what kept it engaging. It's level up system did enough make the games challenge engaging throughout rather than a precession. Then opened up after the game was finished to go on and beef up for the end game optional quests.
No towns, no side quests, no mini games. No npc interaction. Very little plot, pretty unlikeable characters and the most forgettable villains in the series... I was actually kind of relieved when it was over.

FFXV is a beautiful journey that I wish I could relive it like the first time. The main characters, despite still being tropes, are incredibly realistic (that is not common in FF), so over time you somehow end up feeling part of Noctis's group and his friends. Really a beautiful game

Final Fantasy XV, out of all the Final Fantasies I’ve played, is ranked rather low (I and II being lower), but I will give credit where credit is due. As you’re exploring, when Noctis and his group begin to talk to each other at random times, it honestly makes them seem so much more lifelike and real. I absolutely love that part of the game, and though I haven’t played much of it, Final Fantasy XVI and VIIR don’t seem to have that kind of feel to it. Also Ardyn’s motives were so valid. He had every right to be utterly upset.

People don’t give enough credit to ff12, a lot of the design, mechanics, art style, world building that ppl love about 14 and 16 is directly evolved from 12. It’s an excellent entry into the series. Zodiac age to be specific.

I'm not far into 12 but I've heard it has a few story issues here and there but the best of it completely makes up for it. Also I'm not sure if you've noticed but I've also heard that FF dev teams broke up into two different core teams. That's why some after 6 were much more futuristic and modern (7/8/10/13/15), and the others were more medieval fantasy (Tactics/9/11/12/14/16). I hope 17 also goes the medieval fantasy or maybe even take place in Ivalace assuming the other FF branch will still be busy with FF7R part 3 and KH4.

8 is literally the best one in the series, it had a deep complex storyline, memorable characters, perfect twists ,and a sense of realism to it that you can believe. 8's only crime was that "it wasnt 7." And by that I mean:

@pietrobonaldo i dont want to influence your decision too much. Its really up to you. Some people do like 8. The game is brought down by a magic junction system that makes the grind kind of annoying and long. But 8 looks great though (for the time). It has good card mini game though. I straight up dont like the game but you might enjoy it. 9 is just soo good though. All in all, i will never play ff8 again, the only other ff game i can say that about is 2 and maybe 13 since there is 3 of em so i had my fix.

@vitorfranca2112 I feel like the only thing better about 2 is that there are extra outfits and Serah is probably the most underrated FF protagonist ever. Other than that I really enjoy the leveling systems and uniqueness of the playables in 13 more and the story, but 13-2 isn't bad or anything I just wish it felt more different than 13.

I'd more say D&D indirectly created TES. I think RuneQuest(another pen and paper RPG) was a direct contributer. Feel free to correct me, but I remember that the first game was initially going to be a medieval gladiator game, and they just kept adding more. I know they have cited Legends of Valour and Ultima as being big inspirations. JRPGs were initially quite unpopular in the US, especially the FF series, hence why we got the super weird release schedule, as in not getting FFII for many years, and getting FFIV labeled as FFII on SNES, and FFVI labeled as FFIII.
Just to clarify, in case my ramble was confusing. Final Fantasy 2, 3, and 5 were Japan exclusive for many years until international rerelease. I believe 5 got a rerelease on PS1 in 1999. 2 was packaged with 1 remastered in Final Fantasy Origins in 2003. 3 wasnt seen internationally until being remade in 3D on the DS in 2006. In the place of that was 4 released as 2 in 1991, and 6 released as 3 in 1994.

13 is not bad. I think people got annoyed with the battle mechanics, but honestly, it wasn't that bad.
It's the lack of good storytelling. It's a great example of spending all your energy creating lore for a game and then realizing you need a plot.
The game is also linear as well. You can't backtrack to previous area and keep going into new area. Character keep switching /scenario several times

Backwards leveling system, long winded and uninteresting dungeons filled with millions of empty rooms just to make it go for longer, nonexistent character work as everyone either leaves the party, gets little to no dialogue, or just straight up dies, and lame ass enemies (some of which love to just immediately petrify your whole party). Aside from the music, there is NOTHING to redeem from this game aside from Firion and the Emperor's design. FFII Andys always wanna defend the battle system and call it a skill issue, but NOBODY wants to admit this is the worst dungeon design in the series. And I stand by that.
@@tomato5049If you still think that the leveling system is bad in the PSP version that's legitimately a skill issue. Like the comment above you said you can literally just play it like a normal JRPG and you wouldn't notice anything and honestly? After actually understanding the leveling system I actually like it over a lot over the generic level up system because with FF II allows you to give characters multiple different builds depending on your choice. Making Firion a weaponmaster, Layla an evasion tank, Guy a bruiser tank, Maria a healer/archer and Leon a draining/magic focused damage dealer was easily the most fun I've had in a JRPG to date and yes I've played FF VII and VIII.
As for the little to no dialogue that's fine. Especially considering how the WOL in the first game was a blank slate and considering that this is the second game in the series the first one to introduce main characters without blank slates I think you set your expectations too high for that.
And the party dying actually made the story more engaging to me by actually driving home just how powerful The Emperor actually is. When Ricard died saving the party from the emperor risen from hell that made the emperor look like an actual threat rather than the wyvern swooping in and taking the party away.
As for the whole party getting petrified. Really the only time that's happened for me was with the cicatrices and lizards which you'd already have high enough magic defense to resist it if you actually leveled yourself up accordingly.
The battle system wasn't bad either it was just like the rest in my eyes. The stat boosting spells felt really fun to use too and the multiple hits mechanic also was a good addition.
Won't disagree on the dungeon designs though. Outside pandemonium there really wasn't any good dungeons.

Most of character starting weapon got changed like Vaan start weapon used to be mythic sword but in Zodiac age version, he starts with dagger akin for his thievery skill
FF8 is great if you dont break the combat system by skipping every regular encounter.
Also asign each character with their own GF's and dont swap them. It adds a fun challenge with careful customization and unique strenghts and weaknesses.
You dont need a fully optimized party anyway because the only real tough enemy is beyond the point of no return.
That said, all encounters and bosses are now a fun challenge instead of a snoozefest.
XI being respected and fondly remembered makes me happy. It was my first final fantasy.

They took that away from FFXVI, to the point where only a Hack & Slash with a good narrative remained. It may be an incredible game, but the essence of FF is not there, its not a game that encourages you to make an NG+, to explore it to the point of exhaustion, to try a lot of builds until you are satisfied with your work, to play it again and again until you get all the juice out of it. It has nothing of what a real FF have, and therefore, for me this is no longer a Final Fantasy.
@lucaslagoria5934 OK. I could say the same thing the moment they stopped turn based. So it's whatever, I guess. My point is it's still final fantasy in its base form, just an overhaul of fighting mechanics. Same focus on story telling, same monsters, same world styles, magic is still harnessed through special means and crystals, cids still the air guy with a bigger role this time around, your still saving the world from a massive threat, still have a romance trope, still have the same summons,same spells with new ones. Actually, now that I'm sitting here really think about it, the only real difference is literally the combat system in this game and not being able to use party members like others. They even made it linear again instead of open world like 15 was, and I think it's terrible compared to how complex they were able to make linear maps in 10. It is more hack and slash, dissidea is arena combat, all the games up to 10-2 were turn based, and then they overhauled it and made it real time combat. But it's ALL final fantasy in its base form. The creators of final fantasy back then up to now have always stated they never wanted to be the same, and constantly change key things of the last game. I agree with most of your take, except that it's not ff. It is, just not your flavor, which is cool.

Ff xii is by far one of the best rpg experiences in games, the game is very extensive, the story is captivating and the art and sound direction is the best of all games in the final fantasy saga

Sorry but 12 wasn't all that. It was definitely better than 13 and 2 and even 8 imo but its was still lacking the wow 👌 factor of the greats like 7, X, and 4. I mainly couldn't stand the setting and characters. The music of course is top tier like most of Squares osts but i felt like it was trying to do to much and the combat felt slow and drawn out..but hey to each their own of you love it than more power to ya 👊
