The tea houses were an interesting experience. You can stay in the common area to mingle with others from many other countries. We met the Chinese National Team that would be attempting to summit Everest that year at one of the tea houses. The rooms are very basic and can get very cold at night. You will think basic hotels back home are 5-star hotels by the time the trip is over (running water, shower, toilet paper, flush toilets in the room, thermostat/heat, all of which are typically not there in a tea house).

It is a busy time, but the trail is long and groups get spread out during the day. Usually the only time you see a lot of traffic on the trek is at the beginning of the day (when everyone is leaving at/near the same time) and then again midday as the groups coming down pass you going the other way. We were there in April and never felt crowded. And it's nice to be able to see some of the mountaineers who will be attempting to summit Everest. They take the same route to get to EBC and we met about b15 of them along the way, including the entire Chinese team for 2018. Late March early April is a great time to be on the mountain, lots of rhododendrons blooming.

I wouldn't have, either, before going there. And it actually looks even larger and more sprawling from the air due to there not being many tall buildings. So it is spread out over a wide area.

Me and my wife and 2 German girls did it early spring of this year but by helicopter from Khatmandu to the Everest Base Camp. It was a wonderful experience. We would recommend that to anyone short of time. Donot take the plane though. Next time I am trekking.

It was fine during the day, no real problems, even the couple of times we saw snow. The harder part is the cold overnights, where it gets down to near freezing in the tea houses, which generally have no heat except for a stove in the common area. Plenty of blankets provided, but it's still very cold at night.
Thanks very much Brian for your response. Appreciate it. Just one last question is when you say near freezing, does it mean in the minus range or just about 0 degrees. Cause I have heard people saying it goes even to the extent of -5 to -10 degree Celsius.
Hi Zubin, it gets down below 0 Celsius outside at night, but the lowest it got in our room where we were sleeping (keep in mind that these rooms have NO heat) was about 1-2 degrees Celsius. At Gorak Shep (our highest point for sleeping, just below EBC) we paid extra to have electric blankets for the night. Not sure if all tea houses offer that, but ours did. Well worth it for that one night.
Hi Brian, I am my 4 other friends finished our EBC on 22nd April 2019. It was indeed very enlightening experience though a but painful but the beauty and serenity of nature just wont let us stop as it got better and better as we proceeded ahead. We could have sat for hours at a place where the scenic beauty changed every 5 minutes. It was really heaven on earth. I am in love with this country and its beauty. I plan to do an small summit in next 3 years time called Imja Tse popularly known as Island peak.
Why did you go both up and down through Tengpoche, when there is a much better High Scenic Trail high up on the opposite side of the valley? It goes via Mong La - Phortse - Pangpoche and does not need any extra days on the way up. Vastly better views and hardly any trekkers, also a lot of wildlife including Himalayan Tahr and Musk Deer.
They are trekking poles and they are mainly for balance, since the trail is uneven. They also give you an upper body workout along the way. On the hard uphills, you can use them to pull your body up and keep balanced. And, on the downhill, they take some of the weight load off your knees. That said, only 3 out of 4 in our group used them. It's a matter of preference. They help some, others don't use them. I would say about 80% of the trekkers were using trekking poles. But almost none of the porters used them. Go figure.
Hi Peppy, this tea house shown is located in Tengboche. We never paid for any of our accommodations directly, it was all handled by Advanced Adventures for us. So our guide always paid on our behalf for our rooms. That said, many of the tea houses list their room rates as being free to those who eat dinner and breakfast at the tea house. If not free, they are usually very inexpensive (under $10/night).
We had our own private group of 4 people. I would NOT go with one of the big groups, since you will be at their speed instead of your own. But yes, I would work with Advanced Adventures again. They can work with private groups as small as 2 people (or even 1 person). They provided us with 2 guides and 2 porters along with all of the arrangements and food along the way, as well as flights to/from Lukla. Well worth the money spent. Talk to Chet at Advanced Adventures. He is a local Nepali and formerly was a guide on Everest.
It just depends how much help and assistance you want/need. In retrospect, we are certain we would not have wanted to: a) carry all of our own stuff (we saw people doing that and pretty universally they were worn out by the end of the day vs. we really enjoyed the daily treks); or b) try to find available tea houses (when most of the nicer ones, including ours, were already booked up in advance). Sometimes those without ability to get into tea houses slept in tents outside, but that's another level of gear you would need to pack. If you're young/fit and don't care much about where you stay, you can probably do it on your own.
Yes, a little colder than what you saw in the video. The days are manageable with the possible exception of the 4a summit of Kalapathar (VERY cold). It's the sleeping at night in freezing temps that is the more difficult part. Make sure you have long underwear (thermal), wool hat, thermal socks, etc.
I am going to ebc late October. You said that none of you suffered from altitude sickness, did you take Diamox? How much training did you do for your trek?
We all took Diamox. Make sure you take the right dosage. Some on the mountain took too much (500mg) and got sick. The right dose under 60 is 250mg, over 60, 125mg. Of course, check with your doctor, but make sure you are not overprescribed. We did lots of walking and hiking before the trip, but none at altitude. We will be climbing Kilimanjaro in Oct 2018.
I took diamox. Made me a little nauseous and felt tingling in my fingers, face and toes, but we all still made it to base camp!!!!!Do as much training as you can. Stair climber, long hikes, carry a heavy backpack on all walks. I didn’t train enough so found it tough. It will make your climb easier if you work up to it.
Hi Shyam, some of the load carrying animals are mules (which is a cross-breed of a horse and a donkey), but the majority are donkeys. We mainly saw mules being ridden, while the donkeys were carrying loads.

Not all helicopters are rescues, people have the option of trekking to base camp then flying back
