Brilliant video Phil will be painting my upvc front door when it gets a little warmer and still a bit worried about it, but after watching you painting with the frenchic, feel much happier now, again many thanks and you have given me some great tips. 😀😀
I painted my back door using Frenchic Al Fresco wise old sage on the outside and Dazzle me, which is a bright white on the inside as the panels had become very discoloured. Prepped as Frenchic advise, washed down with sugar soap and lightly sanded to key the surface. I was so impressed with how the paint went on, it really is lovely to use. Bit scary after the first coat as I'd used it quite thinly. Second coat after 2 hours looked great. I did a third coat, but it didn't really need it and I was amazed at how little paint had gone out of that little pot! 18 months later the door looks as good as the day I painted it. Withstood the winter so well. I live high up in a very exposed area and the back of the house always takes the brunt of the bad weather, so I have been well impressed. That was my first Frenchic project and I have gone on to do many more since!
That's lovely to hear Lynda, I'd like to try their white to compare. Maybe some of my other videos may help you with projects in the future. But feel free to ask anything if you're stuck or unsure on anything decorating related.

Hi Phil great video very helpful just need some advice I am painting pvc door no grain, just needed to know what would be a good finish Matt or satin in bedec or frenchic if they do a satin?
Great idea, personal choice, the frenchic has a nice finish to it. the bedec on this test was a bit 'matt', but they do a satin/gloss that may be a bit better on the eye.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Just ordered some Ol’ Blue eyes….I know you mentioned it’s self priming, but a coat of Leyland Undercoat/primer(sprayed) and 2 coats of this should be pretty bullet proof?
LoL .. I'll take it as a compliment lol Prep is the key. If you want to use All Coat exterior, it's advisable to put a coat of Zinsser 123 on it first, then all coat. The other two products you can use as they are. Have you seen the other uPVC videos on spraying a door?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Thanks for coming back so quickly mate. I'll have a look. I thought I would have to thin, and was generally thinking around 4-1 using a sprayer but I suppose I'll gauge it when I get the paint. I'll check your vid out. 👍🏻
Yes. But it's a primer/UC and a two top coat finish. Zinsser and Frenchic are a self priming/self Undercoating multi surface paint. You can't compare. It depends what sort of job you're doing
Apologiese as I've had to watch this on mute with subbies, so may have missed a few important bits! My husband painted the inside of our composite front door today. Frenchic Dazzle Me White over our (came wirh the house!) Burgandy. Kicked ourselves cos we had a tin of Zinsser Primer handy. But followed instructions, cleaned and lightly sanded it, but didnt prime it. Sorry to say he wasn't impressed and I was gutted as I'd pushed him to paint it for me! Very watery, dries very quickly and streaky. Expected first, even second coat to look a bit scary....but just looks passable after 5 coats! He's old-school: prefers oil-based Gloss etc. Been Googling best paints for upvc/composite doors and they all seem to recommend water-based products. Still got to convince him to paint the front of the door. That'll be black so may be much easier to cover the burgundy??Hope he'll get on-board but truth is I can't see him using Frenchic again. Shame....because I've already bought the bleddin' stuff!!
What did he think to how the scratch test was with the Frenchic Alfresco I did? You saw how it was applied... Nothing complicated.. very good results. Get him to check out Bedec. Also watch some of my other water based paint videos. ;)
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator He's not watched this vid, but he did exactly the same application as advised/you had....aside from the scratch test. After the 5th coat he himself said it'd made all the difference but not sure he'll ever be a fan. Will check out the paint Brand you've suggested....and watch a few more of your vids! Cheers for uploading/advice 👍
could i use frenchic on a compostie front door , do you think , because we just moved and the door is peeling and looks awful and we cant afford to replace it .
The door was a medium oak colour, which has faded, the bottom half of door where it gets the sun more, is just peeling off ,if i wipe it with a cloth it just falls away, so the door now has big patches with no colour its like a coloured varnish.@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@@denboeckmans1224 sonit actually a proper oak wood door? If so... Clean it down well, sand it, Tru get the varnish all off, dust off. Then you need a coat of aluminum leafing Primer as the first coat. It's the best thing for oak or resinous wood. Allow that to dry, then to can paint it as normal.
I think this test to be fair all should have been same colour. Plus some paints has been open so if the tin was used a year ago and something is just fresh I am guessing fresh should do a better job. Anyhow I applaud your effort. I need something that lasts, I will be doing soil downpipe and if I am happy with the paint then I will do the all windows and doors in grey.
have you watch the follow up scratch test video yet? Its a test how the products perform for adhesion on a upvc surface, the colour doesn't matter, we want to know do these paint work, straight out of the can on a Upvc surface, like they are being sold that they do.
Hi Phil I did a kitchen in allcoat anthracite but it’s looks more blue to me 😡do u know why it’s look blue ish? N can you spray bedec throughly convential spray devibliss ?
Hi. Was it mixed or a pre mixed can of anthracite? Bedec should spray fine. Just have a fiddle with pressure and thickness of paint so it Flows nicely. What needle set have you got?
Love your videos! I'm using Allcoat exterior on kitchen cupboards. Coming out nice when sprayed but it's quite thick. Says add 10% water but it's still thick. How much would thin it by approx? Thanks!
Hi, thanks. No set %, go with a bit a t a time till you find it sprays best. temp of the paint can effect it. are you suing HVLP.. if so a 1.8 needle set works well. If you over thin it.. drop to a 1.5 needle.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator thanks Phil! I'm using the Energer you reviewed with the larger tip. The finish is very nice but could be a little smoother hence might add more water. Doors are completely flat so not hiding anything.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Good thanks Phill! Had sucess using the Energer sprayer on a couple of doors, will try Allcoat a bit thinner when I get back on it.
Painting uPVC is not the problem, it is very simple to do. The reality sadly is the paint faced very quickly and where you once had a window or door you washed each year, you now have to paint it every year. The ultimate reason for plastic window frames was the low maintenance aspect of it.
very true, back in the early 90s Dulux brought out a paint for plastic windows.. mainly for councils to re paint uPVC on council houses to make them look good again it never took off.
Thinners??? It's a water based product so won't need thinners. If it's needs easing just add a splash of water. Don't use thinners! Not sure I have enough to go in my HVLP, if frenchic want to supply me a litre can, I'll give it a go for you ;)
Only problem with frenchic paint it good can't fault it but that not many colours to choice from I spray upvc doors people want anthracite or chartwell green so more to pick from ral code bs codes
I used the MSP Bedec paint to spray internal wood trim and doors and found that the paint came off when masking tape was used to protect the wood trim. Anyone found the same?
If Frenchic can get that coverage and flow on the paint.. why can't other companies..... I'm a bit blown away actually. How it flowed out you'd be hard pushed to say it was brushed.
Nice video, definitely a bit unfair as the green will cover better. I'm a big fan of Frenchic tho, to me it flows better than those other two, they feel a bit heavier and sticky. All good paint tho.
It's not a video on coverage, obviously a colour will cover better. It's how it feels to apply and how it looks when dry... When brushed.. Then the follow up video shows what stands up best ... Which doesn't matter about colour. Any of them sprayed would be a lot better on coverage and overall look of the finish.
That's true. Amazing how the frenchic was gripping well after two hours. Wait for the following nup review next week. As they'll have had a month on the uPVC board... Outside.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator It's a front door.. From exterior side paint faded off and gone rusty and from inside is still shiny.. I believe it's a mid sheen or gloss.
It's still on that board. :) My garden table and chair set... Still like new (on metal) My garden seat seat (plastic rattan) flaked off in areas on the flexing of the plastic.
HI, thanks for reaching out..... white!! now there's a colour most copanies have issues with, please what the Product Testing playlist... you'll see what I mean. This 'test' wasn't about colour, more about will it stay on. It does adhere very well, you must admit ;)
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator yes. It's a great paint but if the others were white, frenchic white should have been used too. The coloured frenchic paints do paint differently. It's not robust though. It chips, it leaves finger marks, it's hard to dust without leaving fibres. I've had to use a Matt water based varnish ( not their topcoat either) on every project.
No as it wasn't an opacity test, it was seeing what the paint is like on uPVC, how it hold up and if you see the 29 days later video.. how it is at a scratch test.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator My conservatory funnily enough is that exact colour/pattern you painted over, hate the thing. 😂 I ’ve put off reaching for the frog tape but I might give it a go after seeing these results. Cheers
@@MrSmid888 it is a colour that was of the time.... but look at it this way...... you can make a vast improvement painting it.. with the right paint. Do you spray?? Prep is the key... clean, wash it down well, a light abrade with the scotch brite pads.. rinse it with clean water and dry it off. You can do it ;)
No, I wouldn't use cellulose, that's a specialist paint, like what they use to spray cars with. It's not really a paint a Painter and Decorator would use.... unless you do spray painting and have proper air extraction facilities in a spray shop, with the fumes being taken away with proper extraction. Water based paints now days have come on so much these last few years. Proper prep, with the correct process of using the right Undercoat with the top finish and you'll be fine.
Thanks I found info this very useful. I was going to buy separate primer, but it looks like with the right product, you don't need it. I found Phil's follow up video (scratch test results - 1 month later) : th-cam.com/video/19Mzy1vRi-Y/w-d-xo.html Taking all into account, it looks like the Bedec is a good choice too.
Bedec says fully cured after 1 month so a great idea on a video but a bit flawed. Need a scratch test after the paint is fully cured. 🙁 Pretty pointless results.
What was interesting was the Frenchic adhesion after only 2hrs was very good. I'll do a follow up on the board Inna few weeks when it's been a month outside. I'm aware most things are a good 7 days to cure fully. A month does seem a long while, how do you protect the bedec from scratches and the like if used in a house..... If that's the case maybe not a suitable product unless used where no one will come near it. Then if that's the case... All other paints would fair well too.
why? It was never a test on opacity/coverage. The test is does it go on uPVC.. and the follow on 29days later video is does it scratch off. Colour has nothing to do with it.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator i just wouldn't trust self priming paints i used the bedec msp on bare softwood and you could scrape it off with a finger nail

Crickey you make me laugh I bet your a funny bugger.we have a huge dark brown pvc front door and I want to lighten it can you advise.
LoL .. I'll take it as a compliment lol
Prep is the key.
If you want to use All Coat exterior, it's advisable to put a coat of Zinsser 123 on it first, then all coat.
The other two products you can use as they are.
Have you seen the other uPVC videos on spraying a door?
Great review great entertainment using great brushes. Subscribed👍
Would you thin out the Bedec if using a HVLP? If so, What ratio would you do it at?
Add a bit of water at a time till you feel it's the right consistency.
You need to thin for hvlp
I've a video on spraying and show how I thin.
Have a look at this one... th-cam.com/video/CjmsvQtI1wg/w-d-xo.html
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Thanks for coming back so quickly mate. I'll have a look. I thought I would have to thin, and was generally thinking around 4-1 using a sprayer but I suppose I'll gauge it when I get the paint.
I'll check your vid out. 👍🏻
Have you used the F&B exterior eggshell ? How does that compare to Frenchie and Zinsser ???
Yes. But it's a primer/UC and a two top coat finish.
Zinsser and Frenchic are a self priming/self Undercoating multi surface paint.
You can't compare.
It depends what sort of job you're doing
Doesn’t the zinsser and msp take several days to fully garden
the longer the better, have you watched the follow up video yet? th-cam.com/video/19Mzy1vRi-Y/w-d-xo.html
Hi. What's peeling on it?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator no its a compostie door ,that looks like a oak door
@@denboeckmans1224 I get ya. Best to get the peeling paint off then, or that will still be wanting to come off with other paint over it.
Hey Phil, have you ever sprayed with bedec?
Yes. Sprays good. I've a video çoming out next week where I use Bedec as the sample paint on a cheap hvlp
Hi Phil
I did a kitchen in allcoat anthracite but it’s looks more blue to me 😡do u know why it’s look blue ish? N can you spray bedec throughly convential spray devibliss ?
Hi. Was it mixed or a pre mixed can of anthracite?
Bedec should spray fine. Just have a fiddle with pressure and thickness of paint so it Flows nicely.
What needle set have you got?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator it was watered down a little bit I was thinking that maybe the reason ? N I use 1.5 n 1.8
I sometimes use 1.3 needle aswell
@@joejuliangregoire thinned 1.5
If it's thicker try the 1.8
What you don't want is a splatter effect on the finish.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator thanks a lot mate
Love the colour
Doors are completely flat so not hiding anything.
how have you gone on these last few weeks with it?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Good thanks Phill! Had sucess using the Energer sprayer on a couple of doors, will try Allcoat a bit thinner when I get back on it.
Done lots of UPC painting being a time served decorator my self and the frenchi is the best iv used
it's quite unbelievable just how nice it is to apply isn't it.
Yep Frenchic good stuff, esp if you pray with atomiser
Can I use this frenchic paint on wooden interior window cill
I can't see why not. It does virtually everything.
I don’t like the Fenchic colours not as nice as F&B. Do they colour match ?
I don't think so
Painting uPVC is not the problem, it is very simple to do.
Can we see u use the al frenchic in a sprayer you think u will need to use thinners
Hi phill your number one fan here 😂😀 can you use kolorbond for wood window frames, and wood doors? Cheers phill :):)
I think the Kolorbond Aquatek is the one for the wood. Check that out.
Or look at AllCoat exterior, Bedec.. or tikkurila Everal Aqua.
Nice one keep them coming👍
Have you tried any of them?
No I normally use zinsser 123 Brilliant videos
@@markcrotty5910 seems to be no need with these paints to so that.
AllCoat is a self primer paint, have you used that much?
Not yet mate will try it soon
Bin primer them first Phil yes or no
What for?
Have you watched the scratch test ?
I used the MSP Bedec paint to spray internal wood trim and doors and found that the paint came off when masking tape was used to protect the wood trim. Anyone found the same?
What tape was it and did you prep with sand down and dust off?
Did you take the tape off when it was dry and set ?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator what is the best tape ?
@@helenalovelock1030 depends what you need it for.
I used zinzar all coat and the finish for £60.00 half gal was very disappointing very ropey and laying off was very difficult to obtain an even finish
why didn't you use a white Frenchic
why, have you had proble,s with teh white, does the white not grip as well?
told ya phil the frenchic is actually decent stuff mate
If Frenchic can get that coverage and flow on the paint.. why can't other companies..... I'm a bit blown away actually. How it flowed out you'd be hard pushed to say it was brushed.
Brilliant 😅
Pretty amazed by the Frenchic and thought it’d be rubbish
turn the sound off and put the subtitles on then lol
I also found the Zinsser Allcoat disappointing for coverage .
in a colour it's a lot better... even better if sprayed though
Yes its like iss overpriced
Can the frenchic go over the rubber seal ?
It'll go over it, whether it stays on if it's flexing is another question.
Frenchic won't adhere to rubber.
Thank you. Frenchic is is then ! 😅
That was a surprise,
Wish there was no wind noise ???? Good video though
Oh the days before I spent £70 on a dedicated external microphone with wind sock. LoL
Zinsser all coat neads 7 days to cure fully between 10 to 20degrees
That's true. Amazing how the frenchic was gripping well after two hours.
Wait for the following nup review next week. As they'll have had a month on the uPVC board... Outside.
Hi Phil.. Which brand can i use the front wood door colour ? Bedec or All coat zinsser ?
Both would be fine... whats on the door now?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator It's a front door.. From exterior side paint faded off and gone rusty and from inside is still shiny.. I believe it's a mid sheen or gloss.
After a year, do you still believe in FrenchChic?
It's still on that board. :)
My garden table and chair set... Still like new (on metal)
My garden seat seat (plastic rattan) flaked off in areas on the flexing of the plastic.
@Phil Beckwith The Professional Painter & Decorator thank you. Would you recommend it for a uPVC door that's faces sun and all weather?
@@catharinakopetschek6204 can't see why not
Too much background noise and wind. You should have done this indoors or picked a better day. Good advice when I could hear it !
Noted!
Should have tried the white frenchic.. it's a mare!. Worse of their colours. Need about 4 thin coats.
They all needed to be white surely. Nonetheless interesting watch, cheers
You can do it ;)
😂😂😂😂😂love your fans
fansonly ;)
I'm always very skeptical of water based paints. Especially good outdoors. Surely cellulose is better
I found Phil's follow up video (scratch test results - 1 month later) : th-cam.com/video/19Mzy1vRi-Y/w-d-xo.html
Taking all into account, it looks like the Bedec is a good choice too.
how have you gone on?
Iv sprayed all those pints to make them stick 100% you need to etching primer and your job will be the dogs
Hi. Apparently you don't as they go over most surfaces. I'll let you watch the follow up video.
Ere, sunshine, get your sound sorted and then I might watch. The wind noise ruins your video. Stopped watching at 3 mins in
Bedec says fully cured after 1 month so a great idea on a video but a bit flawed. Need a scratch test after the paint is fully cured. 🙁 Pretty pointless results.
Thanks for watching the video all the way through.
And they'll be a follow up video as well.
All other paints would fair well too.
not really a comparison/ French job should have been white
why?
It was never a test on opacity/coverage.
The test is does it go on uPVC.. and the follow on 29days later video is does it scratch off.
Colour has nothing to do with it.
How old are you if you was established in 1965 if you was 15 that makes you in your 70s you look well for it lol
Moisturiser ;)
Haha well it's working bud
sounds like the ice cream man is about to stop off , and with french chic the first coat should be lightly put on not slapped on like ice cream
