  • Greg discusses fall stockpiling techniques for your farm. By not overgrazing your pastures in early spring, your summer plants have a much stronger root system. This allows the plants to have a jump start for fall growth. Go to our website: greenpasturesfarm.net and check out my books for more grazing tips for your farm.

    Hello again Mr.Judy.
    In a video posted by the African Farmer you mentioned the Atago refractometer. Please if possible would give the exact model number and short discussion on how to use it.
    That said. If there is one point you drive home in almost every video. Buy livestock! No amount of equipment replaces livestock. Equipment value absolutely diminishes from the minute it is purchased. Were as livestock is the inverse if managed properly. The reason I ask is the products available from Atago vary widely in their cost. Thank you and it's understood that you may very well not cover this.

    Hello Mr.Judy @7:35 what you have according to Missouri Botanical Gardens is Asclepias syriaca that is your native milkweed.
    Interesting fact. The Milkweed that is widely available at local nurseries is creating issues with Monarch Butterflies. It is causing deformities. How do I know this? Have a backyard full of bird and butterfly attractors. Started to notice that some Monarchs were hatched deformed. The yard is full of native plants. The Milkweed utilized is not. Much to my surprise. After a little research. Working on acquiring native milkweed. Do not want to harvest from the wild.

    Mr. Judy you probably answered this question before but how many total acres are you working those 300 head on?

    • @andreafalconiero9089
      @andreafalconiero9089 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a video on The African Homestead channel, I think it was mentioned that he has (or had at that time) 10 quarters, so about 1600 acres, though I may be wrong about that! Of course much of that would be woodland and not pasture. Just based on the videos I've seen I would guess that about 1/3 or more is wooded. If my numbers are correct that would give a stocking rate of about 1 Animal Unit (AU) per 2.5 acres of pasture, assuming about 400 AU. That's my guess on the total livestock based on a cow/calf herd of about 300 cows, plus 60 bulls, plus maybe 100 sheep. I think the Missouri average is about 1 AU per 2 acres, but those animals won't be fed on grass year-round as Greg's are -- most would probably be extensively supplemented or fed with hay throughout the winter, whereas Greg relies almost entirely on forage. Anyway, those are my very rough guesses. I'd certainly like more accurate information if anyone has it!

      Greg do you have a video that addresses mob grazing cattle on new pasture ground that has never been mob grazed during winter months? I don’t have allot of money for bales. I’m organic farming and I’ll be planting rye grass for a cover crop n sept, then roll crimping n April/May and planting soybeans Lord willing🤞. So I will lightly graze the cover crop. But I’m afraid that won’t buy me much time. Also the pasture grass is old CRP grass all native flint hill grasses. Do you have any advice on how to do this cost effectively or and videos that show how to do this? 1 bull 9 cows 4 calf’s all mini Herefords on 43 tillable acers and about 33 native grass acers.
      Thanks you for all you do. 😀

    Greg-
    Is Johnson grass any good for grazing? I’ve got some of it sprinkled throughout my pasture. I look at it as diversity amongst the red, alsike, yellow hop clovers, orchard grass and some sedge varieties. I’m in NH, thank you.

    • @gregjudyregenerativerancher

      Johnson Grass is good for grazing. Cattle will eat it first before any other plants. It grows back faster than any grass I have ever seen. It can be toxic in prolonged droughty periods.

      Try perrenial ryegrass if its suits You. Broadcast very early in spring, and graze it tight to reduce competition from existing plants. Rye should be drilled and might (perhaps) workout if growth of other plants is stunted for whatever reason.
