Mackie SRM450v2 PFC Repair & Keysight Scope Signs of Failure

  • Hi,
In this video I repair the PFC circuit on a Mackie SRM450v2.
Whilst editing the video, I had time to read the on screen firmware failure message. I had previously thought it was a normal boot message where one can change the language etc.
I have spent over £1000 on firmware upgrades so will be speaking to Keysight before attempting any firmware upgrade.

I need to thank you for this video, I've just repaired yet another one of these and I use this video to remind me. I can confirm the PFC in this unit starts at 95khz and drops to 66khz with the PSU.

Thank you for your comments. You'll find if you change the 2 caps around the pfc chip, the frequency will drop.

Thanks for taking the time to make this very informative video! I have an active speaker that has blown the 2 switching FETs and the mains fuse, so researching what else to test before I put in 2 new switching FETs to make sure something else hasn’t blown as well. All the best and take care!

Thanks just seen your very intuitive video, I have the same problem with my SRM450 V2.
initially Q1 was defective i changed that. applied the 18v checked 95khz and the wave form similar to your trace. Applied mains voltage through a current limiter. Voltages fluctuated. will change the capacitors and IC U36 if required.
thanks again been working on this for weeks.

Thank you very much for such a good tutorial. Right now I am repairing an electronic board. It is the same model but it is 120 VAC. I think this video will help me a lot. Greetings from Mexico.

    Neat! Very informative.
Ps: BTW, they could have made everything much more compact if they'd opted for a stacked PCB arrangement. I wonder why they didn't...

On this model the heat dispersion of transistors is not good the white plate between the transistor and the isolated back far too. And the diode and the transistors lose life, if the system is hard requested.

I should have waited even though the Mackey's don't sound as good as the Ev for it has a better lay-out then the EV speakers

Hello, was thinking you may be able to give an opinion on active PA speaker brands. I'm looking at mid-range (price wise) speakers, and they all seem to be made in China. With that being the case it wouldn't surprise me if they all shared many of the same components. It appears you have done intense surgery of many of these, is there a stand out in the crowd in which your not just paying for the name plate on the front? Thanks!

Thank you for your kind comments.
If I wanted to purchase an active speaker, it would have to be Yamaha.
Unfortunately, they are more expensive than many others.
However, they do offer something like a 7 year warranty.
They also release their schematics so repairing them is not a problem.
I believe they are also made in China but use high end components.
Have a look at the Yamaha DBR 10 I repaired.
      Thank you.

    Hello, I have two modules.
    1. Resistors R243 and R245 are overheating.
It does not turn on at the first press from the On Off switch, if I turn it off and turn it back on while the lights go out, it works.
    2. Sounds distorted at medium volume.
I would be glad if you help.
