  • I heard some disturbing news whilst communicating with Keysight over the last few days.
    My Keysight scope firmware seems to have a glitch, Keysight are unable to send me a link to suitable software to restore my scope to original condition or at least tell me why my scope does not see the firmware file.
    I receive better support for my 4k Samsung TV, Samsung know what they are doing, Keysight just want to rip me off.

    Thank you for sharing ... you have every right to feel violated by keysight.
    The notion of being required to purchase expensive licenses simply to activate physical hardware on your (expensive) device ... already seems repugnant. It's a deliberate tease, more like a pyramid scheme than the business practice of a 'reputable' electronics supplier.
    Nor are they the only company with such predatory marketing these days. It seems that the bigger and more expensive companies are, the worse they treat their customers.

      It is not problem in companies It is problem in us, we allowed them to do that.
      Companies now push more and more subscription model so you pay every month to activate something which they already sold to you in first time.
      Look at car companies, monthly subscription for heating seats, steering wheel, you want car to accelerate faster pay monthly fee.
      And when we allowed them that once now is extremely hard to stop them doing that.

      @@mrlazda Let me tell you about my experience with adobe ... another crap company. Many years ago I used to do a lot of video editing, so I bought (perpetual licenses for) adobe premiere and photoshop. Several times I spent a LOT of money on upgrades. I hadn't used it in a while but recently, when I needed to do some video editing, I got the classic adobe pop-up crap telling me that my "system had changed" so I needed to go online to re-activate. I've done this many times BUT this time, it didn't work. Long story short ... adobe decided that my version was old, so they no longer supported it. (I think it was 2 versions prior.) And by "no longer supported" I mean ... they physically removed the activation servers and disconnected the phone numbers baked into the software, meaning: there was NO POSSIBLE WAY to make my software work. Nor could I even open my old premiere projects. I was completely locked out.
      After a tremendous effort I managed to speak with an actual human support person, who told me to my face that the "ONLY solution", was to "subscribe" to one of their new plans at a cost of hundreds of dollars per year. Clearly they are in breach of contract and someone should sue them, but hey, I'm just a guy. One thing however ... I will NEVER GIVE adobe ANOTHER RED CENT as long as I live, and will happily tell anyone willing to listen.
      BTW ... the reason for the problem in the first place, was a 'routine' compulsory windows update. This is what the adobe software wasn't happy about.
      I still occasionally need similar software, so I've settled on 'Davinci Resolve' for video, which is VASTLY superior to premiere anyway ... and it's 'free.' Or it's around $400 for a 'perpetual license' for the professional version. For photo editing, I bought Affinity Photo, which is VASTLY superior to photoshop, has a MUCH more reasonable licensing model, and cost about $50 for a 'perpetual license.' I highly recommend both of these companies ... and adobe can SUCK MY D#$(K!

      Yes I have to agree.
      I first saw it with Adobe, one can no longer buy video editing software, only monthly or annual subscriptions.
      I saw upgrades to Tesla cars are only for the original buyer, they are downgraded if the car is sold and the new owner would need to purchase the very same firmware that had just been disabled.
      I’m beginning to think my upgrades can’t be transferred to another scope!

    Thanks for sharing John. I've seen Keysight sponsor a lot of small to medium maker channels, so they're obviously soliciting end users through those people. The support they give to end users really matters. Thanks for sharing your story.

      Part of an e-mail 16th March 2023 and heard nothing since.
      It's just that, due to legislative changes, Keysight's policy also changed in Europe.
      Since a few years already, we do not sell to nor support private customers (without a business license / VAT ID) anymore.
      However, we are actively searching for a solution to your concern.
      The more info we have, the higher the chances get.

    Damn, that's like how to alienate all your paying customers 101. Bare minimum they should offer support is new firmware and support to maintain your licence access.

    When a manufacturer acts in this way it's clear to me they cannot support their own technology. They have now been added to the black list which includes Roland, Music Tribe, Presonus, Symbiosis/Decimator. Thanks this is good to know when I need a upgrade, Keysight are now excluded.

    Keysight support is 💩💩💩
    It has been that way for a long time.
    They have lost tens of thousands of dollars of business from me at my job because I now specify other manufacturers gear whenever possible.
    In my home lab I have been buying Siglent gear. Much less money, and it works great.

      I mentioned you had personally contacted me many years ago and offered free upgrades to my scope so why on earth are they refusing to help.
      Keysight Europe woman responded (paraphrasing) Well we are not the USA and we have different policies.
      Sadly, as mentioned in another response, I could not accept your generous upgrade since I had already spent over £1000 purchasing all the upgrades.

    In a world where high-capability technology is getting cheaper and cheaper, the reason you buy from an established brand is reliability and support. If they keep this up, people will just design open-source test equipment that gets supported by the user community.

      The funny thing is the fact that Keysight UK in 2014 gave me great support when spending over £1000 on upgrades.
      Today that has stopped.

      @@JohnB-2021 Maybe if you send a couple more polite emails explaining your situation, someone will unofficially be able to provide a different suggestion. There might be an easy fix you can do if you can get it forwarded to an engineer.

      @@brianclimbs1509 I understand where you are coming from but if I am able to flash the firmware, I am then left with 4 licences, the upgrades, that do not have links to software or firmware so require support. Their software is less than straightforward to navigate. Thank you for your support. 😀

    That's really bad.
    Yet Siglent the budget chinese brand got back to me within 4 hours last week with firmware to download to restore a bench DVM that had gone loopy. All back up and running again, hope stays that way...
    There will be someone out there than can help you sort it I'm sure.

      @@unknownhours Not bad, obviously built to a price but that doesn't mean poor performance. I've got 2 bench DVM, a scope and spectrum analyser of theirs. I'm more than happy with all of them.

    yep had that before , yesterday email company to repair my aftermarket ecu , you have to fill a form in, it said no repair will be carried out without receipt of purchase , um 12 years ago and it come with the car , emailed them saying this and they said that's ok , but i'm still dubious if they will fix it or just say i need receipt then say prove its yours , bought software that's one time install and the computer crashed when installing it £250 down the drain sorry your have to buy again sucks

      @@JohnB-2021 yes it was one time install you install first part which ids the machine then it gives a code , you send it to them , and they unlock the program and it finishes installing , blue screened just after

    This sounds illegal somehow, as they still have to honor warranty right? Very much anti 'right to repair' at the very least. Ridiculous that a company who sells you kit for that amount of money, doesn't even offer anything extra over cheaper scopes of other brands, which have better specs for less money to boot.
    Btw, even if they dont know what the problem is and have to take time to diagnose it, I dont think they should charge the end customer for that. Sure, if a hardware failure was found that is caused by improper usage (ex. connecting it to 1000V or something), but if you have used the scope in a normal way they shouldnt. If its not a hardware failure, it means that they as a company have failed with their design. Charging a customer for repairs like that just shows what kind of faith they have in their own products I suppose.
    Was considering getting a keysight scope, but this has put me off for sure.
    At least you'd feel less bad about hacking the scope with such a shoddy company. Not sure if you are aware but there's a DSO-X 2000 thread on the EEVblog that goes into detail on how to restore the firmware on these things (plus some stuff about sailing the wide open seas, if you know what I mean).

      Sadly the scope is well out of warranty but it's not like it's showing a hardware fault.
      It knows its own software is corrupt and Keysight won't send me a file to fix it.
      Tektronix or Rigol next.
      I'll have to search the blog to see about the firmware fix on EEVblog.

      @@JohnB-2021 I have a Sigent 2104X+ at home, and a Tek MSO24 at work. I like my Siglent is better, and it was _way_ cheaper. I can't say that I'm that familiar with other Tek scopes though. The MSO24 is very dependent on the touch screen which I do not like.

      No, the root directory will not highlight the ‘load file’ button.
      One must select a file first.

      @@JohnB-2021 have you tryid placing the same firmware file with all the extensions... i mean like firmware.zip, firmware.cab, firmware.xyz... all the extensions the doc talked about, maybe it will only show up and be selectable with the right extensions... just to try

    I think user files is on the scope - the top entry was the usb drive. Could try another usb stick (I’ve had trouble with mine). Try putting files on the stick and see if you can see them on the scope. If not try a different stick. I had problems with keysight as I was trying to purchase software licenses. The local dealer basically stopped responding when I asked questions. The issue was I wanted some of the features in the plus pack but I had already paid to upgrade the scope memory. I wanted to know if there was a discount. Yeah nice hardware but their software licensing and support model sucks.

      Yes I could see the files on the PC.
      I will maybe try another usb stick.
      This issue clearly highlights the fact I may have a usb stick issue and Keysight Europe / UK are offering zero support.
      As has been mentioned previously, Keysight software and Keysight support Europe really sucks.😁

    You need to go global and say how bad this company is. They sold it to you, their warranty can't say you can have it and end user cannot if they took your money. I'd be pushing the company for a refund of all of the money you have ever spent. What about going back to where you bought it and ask for your money back.

    You have "Pres go to" when the USB stick is selected at 5:59. You are browsing the internal storage. Click with the stick selected and I bet it will open that storage instead
