      Hi, I’m currently working on converting a gas go kart to an electric go kart for a school engineering project. This is my first time working with go karts and I just got a klipper go kart off of facebook marketplace. My budget for batteries is about 150 and I’m hoping to use a 3000w motor. Do you have any tips and/or batteries you’d be willing to sell?

      @@santa3k732 Unfortunately, $150 for the battery necessary to power that motor properly is not possible. However, you can get 6 12v 7.2 aH Mightymax Lead acid batteries for $20 each at Lowes.. It'll work but you'll have little to no range and it won't dump the current necessary, but it'll get you a passing grade for your engineering project. I have some other ideas that will cost a little bit more but won't kill your budget either so contact me at info@texasnev.com if you'd like more help.

    Latest update, we converted to a more easily changeable adaptable T8F chain and sprocket combo that originally came with the kit. This, in addition to the upgraded Lithium Iron Phosphate battery has yielded a top speed of 40mph (up from 32!) with a quieter ride to boot! Super fun and super fast! Completely serviced with a 90 day warranty as this go kart is for sale on e-bay.

    Nice conversion! I modified a mini jeep its running a similar motor on 60v, top speed 22ish so 32mph sounds fast!

      Yeah it was fun.. I have already completed another project, much larger, much faster, will be a week or so before I upload a video.. Won't be as fancy of a "presentation" as this but it is just the same thing, but bigger, faster, more power.

    What amp hour battery are you running? I want to get this motor for my build and I want it to be able to get to 40 mph for city riding.

      Initially it was a repurposed used stack of 5 64 aH Nissan Leaf cells converted from 2s2p to 4s, which theoretically made it 20s @ 32aH. One single cell failed, and I ended up dismantling and selling the pieces and made a brand new 24aH Lithium Iron Phosphate battery which was 24s3p with 8aH cells from BatteryHookup. The battery worked amazing and the cart could hit 45 WOT but it was obvious it was overvolted. :) All else being equal, it would have been best to make it a 24s4p (32aH) So I would recommend any 72v lithium battery with a continuous discharge of 50 amps in a 30-40ah range and you'll have a ball.

    If you put a 34t sprocket on that, you could go 75 with a slight gear reduction for added torque That just goes to show how powerful and fast you can go on a diy project. I love the bulid though

      I wish that were true! If you watched the other videos you'd see that I put a 40 on and it was too much of a load for the motor. The gear ratio math may work but that's where it would end in this case.

    does the motor give a lot of resistance at idle?

      The nice part about brushless motors is that they do not. These little things are great as they do not give much at all. Now brushed motors are a different story.....My Hammerhead 150 EV conversion was brushed and it does.

      I have a 3000w motor at home and it has a resistance at idle when there is no voltage. You can feel the individual permanent magnets with every turn by Hand. I geared my motor very heavily, so the resistance would be too much. I hope that this is no longer present when there is voltage on the controller. Otherwise I have to install a freewheel and it will be a while before I get a battery delivered. And do you have experience with the electric brakes? Are these as strong as the drive itself? Does the braking supply power back to the Batterie?

      @@marcellange814 Hi Marcel, if it is the same motor as this, that is a little surprising. Just as an FYI, if any 2 of the 3 motor wires are touching, the EMF generated by turning the shaft will encounter a LOT of resistance. Even with the motor not connected to anything. :) It's kinda cool. However once it is connected to the controller we did not experience much of any resistance. It will be hard to find a freewheel that can take that kind of torque but by doing so, realize that you'll lose the ability to go in reverse. One thing I want to clarify is that with these bundled controllers, the e-brake is NOT a brake, all it does is cut power to the motor. It does not "brake" anything. Now, however, I'm sure that there are controllers out there that do that. These don't. The purpose of the e-brake is "emergency", not "electric". This is in case of a runaway controller (controller stuck at wide open throttle). It is a safety mechanism.

    Is it a good idea to strap a powerful motor on a light chassis with off-road tires on tarmac? I don’t think so

      4hp is less than most gas go karts of the same size. Maybe check your facts before posting negative comments that have no value whatsoever? If you watched the full series (which it is clear you haven't), you'd see that we put slicks on it anyway. I don't mind constructive criticism, that is one great way to learn. Your comment would be the opposite of that. LOL

      @@TexasNEV yes but I’m looking to make a go kart with electric motors and achieving a 100kmh top speed, it’s 62mph, so do you think that the motors you showed in this video is enough to achieve it with a 4 speed auto?
      I didn’t hate, it’s a good idea, slicks are easy to wear so I can respect it but at the same time there’s no grip, if you are into drifting, it’s a good opportunity to make a drift kart, but I do respect that you made this kart from scratch wd

      @@you.got.gapped.racing44 Understood, thanks for the context. This motor, when overloaded can get to 44mph, but I wouldn't expect it to last very long. It does not generate enough torque to make it a drift kart nor can it "burn rubber". It is just a one wheel drive go-kart. If you want 60 mph, you're going to need a different setup, live axle, probably a big fat Motenergy ME 1306 and a far far larger battery pack... Expect the budget to be almost triple.....

    If I may ask, what pedal did you use to control the current? Did you get it all from Amazon? What battery did you use, 72 volt is it lithium and what is a good AH to get?

      If you can find a junk frame or a non runner to convert to electric that'd be the quickest route. There are sooo many videos out there for DIY go karts.. If you watch the full series you'll see that I just found a junk frame. Now that I know how to weld, I may do a scratch one.. For something completely radical and insane, check out my Terminator Chopper on my channel. that was 100% scratch.

    What is the constant Amp output of the controller? You could take a slight risk and shunt mod the controller for more amps, then back it down in the settings.

      It was a 45 A controller. I sold that go kart a long time ago, but it still ended up going almost 45mph as is. If I were to do it again, I'd definitely go bigger just because I can, not because it needed it. :)

      Well we started out with a stack of Nissan Leaf cells originally, and my son went all day and then some with that. One cell went bad internally so I changed it out to a 24ah 24s LIfePO4 pack I made and that was a good 3 hours of hard riding.

      Not normal... With nothing connected, you should be able to turn the motor easily, sounds like it is defective!

    Congrats on the project, what about of your current battery consumption when you change the testes. And your converter supports regenerative braking?

      No regen.. Not worth it on go karts and motorcycles. Not enough mass and the controller doesn't support it anyway. As far as my testes go, they are fine where they are. :) Must be a typo on your part.. LOL

    What is the battery on that?? It looks small, so im curious about type, and performance. Ive been looking for something to power my spare kart chassie, and had problems finding an electric motor cheap enough to justify the investment. I could get a minimoto lifan 160cc for about £280 with 14hp and a 4speed gearbox which could be fun or go nuts and get something crazy like a cbr600 for £500.. if i go electric instead, i cant see how i can get 6000w for £1000 and frankly id prefer 20k watts on the race chassie thats waiting because my other 2 karts both have 30hp approx petrol engines.

      With the way my kid pounded on it, probably 25 miles. When it had the repurposed Nissan Leaf cells, he'd go a couple days before he'd have to charge it.

      The battery was originally made with used Nissan Leaf cells. Then I ended up making another battery from scratch with 32650 cells for 24ah. So I don't have a link for those but what I do have is a far superior alternative that is much higher capacity and much higher discharge capability. I have these on my e-bay site specifically for projects like this and e-bikes..

      Well since we changed over to the Lithium Iron phosphate, it was a little less than when we had the Nissan Leaf cells but 2-3 hours is what we experienced after the battery switch. The nice part is that there is still room in the battery box to go to 30-40ah. I sold this go kart last month and the customer said it was a "very well built and designed" go kart. I also sold the Hammerhead NEV as well as the Schwinn, and the Fat Tire Bike conversion. I have two more projects that I am working on... Stay tuned!

    Do you know how low the voltage of the battery pack can drop before the controller shuts off? I’m looking to buy the same motor kit :)

      Thank you! The low voltage cutoff is programmable in the BMS. The nominal cutoff voltage for Lithium Ion is 2.5 to 3v w/ a full charge voltage of about 4.2v (So at 20s would be 84v full, 60v minimum level for considering full discharge.

      @@TexasNEV Thanks for your reply. The reason for my question is that the kunray sales person told me that the voltage input range was 68V-78V. This sounded unlikely to me because as you correctly mentioned a 72V pack can be charged to 82 volt and discharged to 60 volt.
      Is it correct that you had you system hook up to the battery while charge to 82v without any problems? I saw 80v on the picture of your battery indicator.

      @@MBcreates I've had no problems. The information they gave you can't be right... Given they (along with most others) would be using lithium for power, a fully charged 20s lithium battery is 84v.. They have to know that. 78v would be 6 12v lead acid batteries in series fully charged.. I can't even imagine how heavy that would be.

      @@jamegonz hmm.. something most certainly doesn't sound right. Mine doesn't do that.. I mean running the motor hard in the summer, oh yeah, it gets hot but if you are running it under no load and it gets that hot, either there is a wiring error or the motor is bad.

    I'm thinking of putting a 72v brushless motor 3000w on a buggy for me and my kids to ride up and down the street. How do I determine if the motor is powerful enough to pull approx 150kg ? Or should I consider other options ?

      Archimedes once said "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum with which to place, I can move the earth". Same goes with sprocket size and gear ratio.. :) If the total weight is 330 lbs and you have no expectation of high speeds and use a sprocket big enough, sure. Note I just hit 38 mph in this go-kart (my son hit 44), I weigh 210 and the go kart probably weighs about 75 lbs.. So the question is, how fast do you want to go? Note that 3000w is about 4 hp, and if your tire size can support a large rear sprocket (70-80 tooth) then that could be up to 32 ft lbs of torque. What kind of buggy is it?

    Hi I have a 72v vevor motor. And a 67v battery fully charged. It won't even move unless I give it a push. How do I get some Low end torque? I would think I'd have enough power bc it goes pretty fast once going but from a stand still the motor makes weird noises like it's jumping chain links but it's not

      @@TexasNEV awesome man thanks I will look tomorrow and send you that information but it's a Vevor 72v motor and 72v controller with 3 speed twist throttle from ebay. It's on a baja doodlebug mini bike I think it has around 62 teeth on the rear and I think the motor came with 11 teeth

      @@Steinmetz1 gear ratio should be good, a little higher would be better but it should still work.. bike would be lighter than a go kart, do the 3 speeds work? If all speeds are the same, then the motor is operating in reverse and you are only getting half throttle (this is by design). If that is not the case, I need more detail about the battery....

    Question, I'm thinking about getting the same motor, my question is can you connect 2 motors to 1 controller?

      I actually do not know.. I know you can connect two brushed motors to one brushed controller, but given brushless motors are "AC", my "gut" says you can't and that you'd need two controllers hooked to one throttle. But again, not sure.

      Yes!, you would need 2 controllers
      each controller has 3 wires for the throttle,
      1 is power 1 is earth and 1 is the SIGNAL wire
      just connect the throttle signal wires from the controllers together then connect together with the 1 throttle signal wire (usually green)
      so all signal wires are together
      You can power the throttle using the power and earth from 1 of the controllers

      Well, since this isn't a vehicle designed for "transportation", that would be hard to guess. However, I can tell you that my son would go for a few days of near constant use on the weekends before it needing to be charged.

    Hey Randy I'm doing a build with an 48V 1800W motor, 18AH SLA batteries and ordered a 50 tooth sprocket to make a 5:1 gear ratio too. I really wanted to do this instead of 6:1 to ensure that my kart goes fast but I'm worried about overloading the motor and heating/frying it. I bench tested my previous motor order for 5 minutes and it got so hot the insulation started melting (I think that's what the burning smell was). That was probably a defective product which I returned, but I want to be cognizant of keeping the motor cool (relatively speaking). How cool is yours and how long do you usually run it for? I intend to go for around 30 minutes. I saw online that it's possible that motors get stressed when they are run below full rpm, but hopefully its okay with the 3 speed switch. Finally mine is a good deal weaker than your motor, not sure if you can speak to this but do you think at this gear ratio that it'll be the deciding factor? Sorry, loads of questions, but props for a great project and explanation videos

      When it comes to heat, it's all about the current not necessarily rpm.. The RPM ratings are based on no load. Part 1 details the go kart speed calculator on BMI karts, try that and see what #'s you come up with. If you get unusually high top speed calculations, the 5:1 ratio may be too much, but then again, it depends on the weight of the kart and driver as well. If you get 30 min of hard running seems about right for a motor to get hot. It is always better to start out with a higher tooth count and work your way down. FWIW 6:1 is pretty standard. If you melted a motor on the bench (w/ no load) in 5 min it was either defective or miswired. The speed controller should have kept your current at or below the rated level, so that's weird.

      @@TexasNEV The calculations show 31 mph. I see that yours is a 2 person kart and mine is 1 person, I'd estimate it would weigh 300 lbs with a passenger inside. Regardless, the controller is rated 33A, which is 88% I get from dividing the motors wattage by its voltage. So hopefully at 5:1 gear ratio, that works out. I was looking at forums on electricscooterparts.com, and they said that gear ratio should be fine for that power. I just wanted to check the intuition with someone who had done the build already.

      @@ritwikdixit6799 Well if they say it's ok, then it's probably ok. If a 3000w geared at 5:1 gets me 44mph at 87v, then 1800w @ 33a @ 5:1 at 31mph seems to make sense. If you find that the acceleration seems labored then go ahead and try 6:1... Have fun!

      @@TexasNEV Im curious as to why you were able to get a speed that was higher than your theoretical max for 5:1 gear ratio. Did you miscalculate your diameter of your tires or did the motor spin in extra RPM? The Kunray product says it can spin up to 5800rpm

      @@ritwikdixit6799 I was overvolting the motor and hitting insane RPM's far beyond the max rpm that I used in the calculator.. Would not expect the motor to live very long if I kept that up. :) However I was using 4500 not 5400, but I bet I was hitting 7k.. !! :)

      I think it would be worse. Electric motors are about 90% efficient, which is far far higher than a gas engine and give 100% max torque at 1 rpm (figuratively speaking).

      @@macbook802 It has to make sense first. :) It's a nice idea but a TC is designed to help a gas engine have it's torque optimized at more rpm ranges other than its primary power band. in an electric motor, the entire range is it's power band.

    Can anyone tell my why my drive sprocket is skipping chain links. I am using the original sprockets that came with the chain and kit for the 3000 watt 72 volt Kunray Electric motor. If I power it up very high it keep skipping about every 10 seconds. I have it on a 4 wheel bike with 24" wheels, overall weight with me on it is about 370lbs. It goes faster than I want to go, the bike has no suspension, I've had it up to 25mph, but I'm afraid that loud clicking sound is causing damage to something. I'm assuming it's the chain jumping the sprocket on the motor 11 t sprocket. My shaft sprocket is 50t.

      Chain sounds like it is stretched or if the sprocket is aluminum, the teeth are worn, or it is just simply not tight enough.

      All else being equal the bike would be faster only because it would weigh less. From my experience and on other videos I've posted, the 48v 1500W fat bike topped out at 38mph so.. yeah.. :)

      Any 72v lithium 20aH or higher will work. The first battery was repurposed Nissan Leaf cells, the second battery I made using 72 6aH lithium iron phosphate cells in a 3s24p configuration.

      That's what we ended up doing. This go kart is for sale on e-bay, traderrje. It was upgraded to CST slicks, dual panel mount USB phone charger, upgraded power capacity buck converter, new Lithium Iron Phosphate 18 aH 87.6v battery and 250v charger. My son has gotten so tall and has outgrown it.. It runs perfectly and texasnev.com will give 90 day tech support.

    I have made a kart with this exact motor and I got 31mph top speed and I use 14s li-ion 60v battery. Idk why yours is slower

      @Bigpimpin9393 The technical specifications of the motor, current, drive sprocket, driven sprocket and wheel diameter, it is not possible. The efficacy of clutches on electric drive systems are subject to debate, and cannot make speed all by themselves. Some people have confused the brake band has a clutch in these videos.

      We actually found that we had a faulty throttle pedal. After replacing it and the other modifications in the post below, my son hit 44mph in it. If you got caught up on the updates on the other videos and still think 44 mph is too slow, then I would suggest watching part 1 in it's entirety to understand the math behind the speed calculations done on BMI Karts website "go kart speed calculator".

      @@itaechannel2149 If you have any configuration information for that, I'd like to see it. I can see the potential for 60kmh (37mph) if it was a bike but not seeing how it is possible in a go-kart with this motor / controller / battery setup. The total weight with rider is probably close to 200 pounds and 32 mph is about 52 kmh which is pretty close. Again a 40 tooth sprocket resulted in high heat and excessive battery drain, which means the load is too much for the motor.
