Very interesting to watch how the headstones were located and uncovered. Very nice to see these grave markers cleaned and restored to their original condition for the families and hopefully generations to come.
Thanks for your comments! I'll try and touch a little on flat stones, one I like them if there below the grass level I can ride the mower over them. It cuts out a lot of labor like weed eating. And I think it would cut down about twenty-five to thirty-five presents on grass cutting time. But this cemetery has a verity of different gravestone, I accepted that when I started volunteering. Some of the newer cemeteries do require flat grave markers, and I think this allows them to streamline their process. Now with flat stones at these older cemeteries some are above the ground level and cannot be seen, and you can see the edges of the stones chip off. And a lot of them, so much damaged has been done to the mowers. Thanks again for your comments.
I feel the same way, had no choice but to put a flat stone on my daughters grave it was not what I wanted. That was the rules, the thing is that they didn't tell me that when I purchased the plot, would not have purchased that plot in that part of the cemetery.
You are most welcome. I am fortunate to work with the handful of people, including Mr. Harmon, who dedicate a lot of their time and energy maintaining Oakland Cemetery. There are a lot of pros and cons with the gravesites. To the best of my knowledge, this cemetery did not have a flat stone requirement, as there are many types of stones/monuments gracing the cemetery. Just by natural vegetation growth alone, a flat stone can be easily covered, and eventually 'lost' in a short period of time.
What wonderful work you are doing. Amazing those perfectly good stones were just hidden all this time. Thank you, for saving them from being forever lost.
Thanks for your comment! The stones can be a challenge to locate, but the fortunate part of finding a buried stone is the fact it is preserved so well. Mr. Harmon's experience around the cemetery and the general information provided really helps with the search. There is always a chance of overgrowth in the future, so we do our best to document the location of the stone including a perspective photo (Wide Angle) to show other graves in the general location.
We have used CLR spray on granite headstones to pull the hard water calcium out of the surface. Works great. After it’s washed and dried, use a little car wax on it. Turtle wax works well.
Thanks for sharing @QueenWendyLu! I’ve heard about the use of CLR. We have several types (granite, marble, concrete etc) of stones at Oakland, and a lot of them are very delicate as is. Thanks for your input; the turtle wax idea sounds interesting! 👍
Great work that you are doing! These flat stones need edge markers that extend one inch above the ground. This will make them visible, but at the same time are too low for a mower to clip.
Earthquakes are a unique condition for sure! I have had the opportunity to visit several national cemeteries in AZ, NV, and CA with 'The Missing in America Project'. Each cemetery may have their unique requirements. The more I learn about cemeteries, I can understand why there are specific requirements for geographic regions. Oakland Cemetery has a variety of gravestones/markers. The cemeteries in AZ had flat stones and even the 'grounds' were covered in beautifully manicured rock/gravel vice grass.
Mr. Thomas, there are several options. For the best chance of response, you can click the 'about' section in the gray description box and email the cemetery. You can also use the Find a Grave Memorial Search tool, and you can locate specific graves (If they are listed). Let us know if this helps.
Mr. WilmerThomas9388, I’ll be happy and try and locater you mother-in-law, several things we can do, fist I’ll need the last name and first name, and dated of death and birth date will help. Nice video you do great work guys, but the audio is very poor you might want to get an external Bluetooth microphone so you can place it closer to where your working, I will do my part to help you get views thanks.
Thanks William, I just started using TH-cam downloading videos in August of 2023, so I'm kind of new at this. I have a Kodak PIXPRO FZ152 Digital Camera I does not accept Bluetooth. Maybe in the future I might invest in a new camera. I use a cardboard box on top of the tripod and put the camera inside if it some of the background noise get block. Check out my video 2024 budget. Thanks again.

Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for your caring soul to help bring these stones back to the light.
You are so welcome
It is an honor to do so Ms. Juanita! We do the best we can when we can.
Very much appreciate your hard and just work. This is why I don't like flat stones. And I think it is wrong that some cemeteries require flat stones.

Yes, you are right
That is absolutely correct. Flat stones have their challenges for sure! Thanks for mentioning the edge markers. I will have to take a look into those!
Flat stones are required here in California due to earthquakes.
