Jim Smith thanks, I always slow down this time in August , it’s vacation time, so that’s why I’ve been a little light on the uploading lately. but I’ll be going strong 💪 w more hat content soon.
Love those Safari hats. Especially in the summer when I'm out metal detecting keeps all that sun off my face and my neck. Hope you're enjoying your Sunday kevin.
One of the best hat videos I've seen in a while. Kudos. You lay out all the subtle differences between western style hats and classic fedoras and bring us up to speed on some modern examples...without sounding too much like a commercial. Great video. Thank you!
thx for the nice compliments! I noticed folks are very interested in westerns and western related hats, I’ll try to do more videos like this, describing hats in the showcase, their differences..
Yeah, this is a fertile field for sure. Epic writer Elmore Leonard spec'd his hero Raylan Givens to wear a "Dallas Businessman's Special' aka Stetson Open Road. Of course, the TV Raylan in 'Justified' wore a much different, more western style pure cowboy hat. But in the final episode, Raylan wears a very cool olive-colored fedora made by Nick Fouquet. I just had Art Fawcett make me a nice 3" brim custom version of that hat in pure beaver and it's a very cool looking lid!
Nice stuff, thanks. I'm currently wearing a Stetson western hat that's at least 30 years old. The front "pinch" is now see through but it's still my everyday hat.
I used to go to Bernie Utz Hat Store in Seattle before it closed. Fun place to visit for sure. SRV and Steve McQueen both wore the Gambler Hats. McQueen wore One in Dead or Alive. It does take work to determine which Style suits you the most. Kevin your the best for making these Videos! Thank You!
A leather Stetson was my first hat almost 20 years ago. I still wear it on every other day basis. But I've been going through a wool crushable about every 3 years for the last ten.I wear a hat everyday and I can tell you that the wool crushables are some of the best fitting hats on the market. I really like the black Bozeman hat.
This is a great video Kevin. I like the idea of a traditional western hat but in reality can’t pull the look off. These style hats suit me more. Saving my pennies for the Open Road. Would love to see a video tour of the shop.
J James I will, thanks, it seems the viewers really like western hats and cap videos, so I’m going to try to double up on both those subject this year😼
When you talk about the durability if the western style hats you give me a lot more confidence in my Stetson but I don't know that I'll ever try and abuse it unnecessarily. I really do feel better about how my hat should last now. Thank you.
Stetson, like all hat brands, have had their ups and downs, but their western hats have consistently been strong as nails for decades, with few exceptions..

In the late 70s too, after the film,Urban Cowboy was released, my dad had a western wear shop in Queens, I worked there weekends and summers since i was young, westerns were HUGE in NYC then..
Well done, Kevin. This video is definitely one of your top ten! As spring time arrives I’d be interested in a review of straw hats if JJ carries them. Thanks!

Hey Kevin, great video again! I really like my traveler hat but can you please tell me a „secret“ how to keep my ears warm on cold or windy days? Currently I wear a fleece ski hat on cold days but it looks ugly. I am not sure if I look like a fool if I wear ear bags or so. I’d like to buy a thick crossover hat for winter if I had a solution against cold ears. Best regards from Germany Thomas
I have a Stetson Gallatin crushable that was buried under my camping gear for several months and got bent out of shape. It has a hemmed brim that has a couple kinks and feels like there is some kind of stiffener in the hem, not like wire but maybe plastic? Can I try steam to get it back in shape? Thanks, and I enjoy your informative videos.
Steve Egbert no, there’s nothing in the brim of those Galatins.. but when crushable Lite felt gets THAT out of shape, it is very stubborn, hard to fix, u need to keep trying, use steam, soften it as much as u can w steam, them use weights or something, try to put heavy objects on it, or whatever u can do to hold it in shape while it dries..tie it w string, use heavy weights, or whatever u can..or just bend it the opposite way and hold it still while it dries..it’ll be tough, that felt is meant to hold shape, so whatever shape it’s in, she wants to hold it...that’s the crushable thing. If u are in NYC ever, I can do it free.. 😉 good luck!
It’s nice felt too, feel thick,soft..it’s a well designed hat. There are some minor differences between that and the Whippet though, mostly the crown shape, instead of a standard teardrop, they got a little experimental and used a “chicken foot crease”,AKA “three finger crease” it’s supposed to look like it was shaped by hand, using three fingers spread out like an eagles talon, I personally think it’s an amazing looking crease, although I’ve had one or two people ask me to change it to a standard teardrop, I think it’s cool.
I love the Roadster but I'm reshaping mine because the top center seems to rest directly on my head. I'm trying to 'dome' the very center without stretching the felt or getting the whole shape out of whack.
Hi, Kevin. For folks considering BEAVER hats, how does the Stetson High Line in this video compare to the Stetson Temple Special Edition in 100% BEAVER (not the normal one in rabbit fur) in terms of rain wear, brim sturdiness, felt thickness, durability, looks, etc. ?
Sorry we dont sell it so i never saw that temple but i can say it is not great as a rain hat w that raw edge, thinner dress felt, long brim. The high line is very thick, welted edge..better performance
Sorry, Kevin. I should've clarified. I saw it on the JJ Hat Center web site. It didn't indicate it was an online-only item, so I expected you guys had it in stock in the store. It is listed on the JJ Hat Center site as "THE TEMPLE SPECIAL EDITION" name. A keyword search on Temple will reveal it as well. From one of your newer videos, I knew the rabbit-fur Temple was no good for rain, but I was hoping the BEAVER Temple might be on par with the High Line due to then both being over the $300 price point. You've pretty much sold me on the High Line, but I wanted to evaluate that Temple SE Beaver before leaping.
Hi Kevin, what is the name of the italian company you mention in the video? I have one similar to that marked HUTTER from Merano (Italy). Thank for all your fantastic video!
Everyone likes it a little different. Generally u want it snug, not tight. Usually a hat shouldn’t be so large that it’s bashing into your ears, it should sit close to the ears, either super close, almost touching your ears, or maybe a pinkies width away from it. I need a " WORK" bullet proof hat that keeps You dry , with a teardrop crown , wont lose its shape ( prefer dark green ) , dosent show fingerprint & easy to clean ! What do You recommend ?
Anything from Akubra hats, The Stylemaster is nice, anything they make is going to last you forever.. Go Akubra, u can order from the, directly too, from David Morgan , that’s the US distributor, they’re online. We get the felts in again usually mid September
@@KTGHATS Thanks for the recommendation ! I've been looking at videos of Akubra hats ( sooo many models ) ! I watched a video of a Man standing under a garden hose ( hat stayed more or less dry at the end of it , at least on the inside ) !!!! Hat had a 4" brim front & rear LOL !! I drive a truck & I'm afraid I might not be able to keep the brim in shape !
The Stetson royal flush, they come in November usually, I can tell the manager that people are asking for them and suggest it, it’s a good seller, best thing? Email info@jjhatcenter.com and request the Stetson Royal flush, if it comes from a customer, they respond to it more seriously thx kev
Hi Kevin, fan from Canada. Planing a trip to New york in the near future Covid permiting. Do you guys still carry the bozeman? Love your videos and abundant knowledge oh hats. Subscribed. Have a safe and great year.
Hello, I'm new to the western hat style, but my wife bought me a western straw hat for working on the farm and it's amazing. Only down side is the rain is ruining it. Can you suggest a good 4 season hat that rain won't hurt within the western style please? I was thinking a leather hat, but there's just not much info I've found on low cost leather hats so I don't really know where to start. Thank you for your time.
Not really.. straw is for sun, felt is for rain ,snow but not summer. U can try a heavy palm straw from Mexico, Stetson makes those..they're ok when wet. Or a simple, poplin rain hat, like our rain safari, Aberdeen, or rain challenger. www.jjhatcenter.com or a cotton bucket is what I wear, hat called the Birdie on our site .I wear those..they can get wet..
I noticed the image under the hat for the Stetson Pawnee Chocolate from your previous video is different than the Black color from this video. Why is that? Were the chocolate ones made earlier and they just change up the design for the gun club?
I'm sorry I'm not sure what image u meant.. but Pawnee is discontinued, nobody has any left either.. there are similar models now, lots.. If u want to rephrase your question,I'm not sure what image u are referring to. But yeah, Pawnee is now defunct
@@KTGHATS I was referring to the image under the crown. At 18:35 you show a Stetson Pawnee and as you mention it's part of the gun club you show us the inside and it has the picture of bird with the words, "The Gun Club", but if you go to the Stetson website and search Pawnee, a chocolate colored one comes up with a picture of a man caring for his horse inside the hat. I personally like the birds image better than the man and horse and thought it was interesting how it differed. But now that I know it's discontinued, I can't be picky about what's inside, since I do love the way the hat looks overall.
The outback hat, it’s VERY rugged and reliable, rollable for travel and nicely styled, made in NY.. I like the styling quite more than the Santa Fe www.jjhatcenter.com/products/the-outback-hat?_pos=1&_sid=62b089a14&_ss=r&variant=39492866080883
That's a real Australian outback hat, as classical as one gets, I'd check out the Akubra Cattleman or maybe our Akubra Traveller, That's an outback, kinda like something u would wear with a Western Duster Coat. Stetson Dune is also a bit similar
Hi Kevin. A question that is dat from this video, but still want to ask. You know Signes from Spain. I saw a model (Pico. Check their site) with a 7,5 cm brim. This model is a typical Bogart style hat. So what I want to know is whether it is possible to flatten its brim just like a Gambler/Pork Pie. And perhaps the crown also like a porkpie. What you think. Because I heard that the quality of the hat is not like a Borsalino: stoffering I think. Thanks my friend
hetiszielig I don not sell that particular model, but similar ones..from Signes too..their stuff is unreal, they feel like $300-350 hats but they are around $200, ours are all custom, and yes..that’s fur felt, and good quality, so I can shape it any way u want, any pork pie u want,sure..I do this all the time, teardrops, PorkPie..I think most of the Signes stuff has a shape that can take a good pork pie or telescopic crown, the felt is thick, and high quality..but we carry a few unique things that we give our own names to..Esteban ,Fabrizio, Gramercy,a few more.. www.jjhatcenter.com
Stetson hasn’t shipped us hats in close to a year, we have carried the Dune every year for maybe 20-25 years, but we are sold out now. Anything Stetson is hard to get right now, they didn’t ship anything last fall and summer, we are hoping they start shipping again this fall. But yeah, they’re all gone. Especially since we started running all these sales, the remaining few blew out
@@KTGHATS Thanks. I've been looking for a good durable hat. Something between a very wide brim fedora and an outback. The Dune really seems to have it in spades. Hadn't even seen it until you showed it in this video and my eyes popped outta my head. I gotta have one. What's the best way to stiffen and weather proof a wool felt hat btw?
Timothy, at what point in the video the hat is on the screen? (for instance, if it comes on at the 2 minutes & 30 second mark, write “2:30”) let me know, there are a lot of hats in that video Tell me what number the counter is at,when the hat is being shown.. I’m in the back room showing sale hats, which are predominantly discontinued models and colors...odds and ends... but let me know, I know that video, I’m wearing a red t shirt,right?.. lotta hats, tell me which one, if we don’t sell it anymore, we may have something just like it..
It was the very first hat you picked up, it was grey I think it had a stingy brim it was a silk finish beaver fur hat, I watched the video a couple of times I do not think you mentioned the manufacturer of the hat. I was curious the size and price of that hat as well as the brown stingy brim fedora by magill that you briefly featured when you were talking about silk finish fur hats.
The first hat appears 13 seconds in and the second hat appears at 2:42 in. I talked to you on Monday and bought a lite felt fedora in cognac color from that video, I am stoked to get that hat. Due to the polar vortex in your part of the country I am at the mercy of UPS but hey i am still excited to get that hat. I love your videos Kevin but they make me want to buy more hats!!!!
Ok, those are the same hats, in two colors, u have a good eye. They are old, and custom made, unavailable anymore.. they are both still on the sale rack because they are huge, size 62 (7 3/4 or XXL ) they are Biltmore stingy brims, from about 7-8 years ago, back when Biltmore was in Canada, before they were bought out and moved to the US. These have silk, beaver finishes,cognac/gold and silver..with bound edges, we can’t get those anymore. the only way would be to make it completely custom. And that would run a boatload of money, like $450-500. I could find u small brim hats that are simpler, without all the custom features..(the custom colors and silky texture) but those?.. we use to sell them in 5 colors and with a pork pie crown too..now there are those two left, because they’re so huge. Anything on that wall is a one of a kind ,usually..and half price..
Cris Yorke yeah we used to sell the 100x and the 500x. El Patron,it was called at the time, they’d gone out of style, nobody asks for them in nyc anymore, the occasional drug lord or Cartel member might ask for one of those, otherwise, who the hell can afford that?
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! Haha true! I’ve got 2 $1,000 hats and some other borsalino, Stetson, Laulhere, Scala, Ricardo, Tracy Watts, etc hat brands, so perhaps a mini drug lord? LOL. Well, El chapo was caught so one less customer. LOL. Frankly, these types of hats are similar to top quality beaver felt, just that there are precious embellishments to jack up the price. I’ve heard $25,000 monticristi panama hats from Brent Black and I was thinking that’s insane price! I’ve heard they even have $50,000 to $100,000 monticristi hat made from straw. That’s just simply obscene.
@@KTGHATS Thanks for responding ! I'm not sure I can wear the 60 cm ( how do I measure for it - what is 60cm in " ? ) That stetson out back style hat You showed after that gun club hat is a great looker too .. how much $$ is it ?0
U can telescope pretty much anything, no guarantee you’ll like it though, typical modifications is a teardrop, very common.but u can give it a tele.that’s a shallow hat though, u can’t get too high...
jjhatcenter.com it is a 3" brim fedora w a very, very low teardrop shape... i have some hats like that, little hand shaping would help. Try the San Sebastian model(shaped by me) or the Stetson Dune
Nope.that shape only works well when stiff.the premier stratoliner is a softer version made of dress felt, not western felt. It comes open crown but O.Road is a common way to shape it,LBJ wore them.. not rollable, but way,way softer, not stiff, and it weighs less.
Personally I find the cowboy hat to be ostentatious outside its natural environment. I stuck with the outback styles when working in the north. The trees present problems for big ol cowboy hats. Out backs are made for abuse. My canvas outbacks were perfect for trail riding with no trails but look like shit in the city.
@@KTGHATS Thanks. Got a video series idea for you: "hats from around the world". I'm sure you get a lot of different hats in for reblocking, stretching, repair, etc so you would have a lot of very interesting insights. Thanks again!
I've got Nothing against drug lords, they tend to dress in all white a lot, ..white suit, Panama.. I think drug lords should dress up in full clown makeup, big,red nose, giant shoes..like Stephen King's"It" To me,that's much more intimidating than the white suit.
Indie Jones: In forums all caps is very much frowned at, in fact many folks will not read all cap posts. Reason is it implies YELLING and SCREAMING; truly do not think that is your intent. Also, all caps is more difficult reading than all lowercase lettering.
Ric Donato ok boomer lemme educate ya, with the context and subject matter of my comment, an intelligent person would come to the correct assumption that it was not a comment meant to be interpreted as me yelling, but more as manic shock. Like Seinfeld when he yells on stage with a inside voice and sarcastic tone. That’s for trying to help tho ig.

My favorite hat style that reaches into the old west in the Montana Peak.
Not the hat worn by the park service. While technically a Montana Peak it looks like crap in my opinion.
I've heard that more often referred to as a Montana "slope" if you're talking about something that looks like a Gus? The names may be regional.

They are 25% off until Valentine's day.. midnight. Look for the Metropolitan
I need a " WORK" bullet proof hat
that keeps You dry , with a teardrop
crown , wont lose its shape ( prefer
dark green ) , dosent show fingerprint & easy to clean !
I've been looking at videos of Akubra
hats ( sooo many models ) ! I watched a video of a Man standing under a garden hose ( hat stayed
more or less dry at the end of it , at least on the inside ) !!!! Hat had a 4" brim front & rear LOL !! I drive a truck
& I'm afraid I might not be able to
keep the brim in shape !
Open Road is a bad ass hat!
I have a Stetson Mountain Sky.
No stetson 4x senaca? Cmonnnnn lol
Great video though thank you for doing it
There aren't many detailed hat videos on TH-cam.
Thanks!

The Gambler, Stetson Royal Flush looks like Stevie Ray Vaughn's hat
Yes, true
What is the brand and model of the Gambler that Kevin is wearing at 14:00? Is it still sold at JJ Hat Center?
The Stetson royal flush, they come in November usually, I can tell the manager that people are asking for them and suggest it, it’s a good seller, best thing? Email info@jjhatcenter.com and request the Stetson Royal flush, if it comes from a customer, they respond to it more seriously thx kev
Hi Kevin, fan from Canada. Planing a trip to New york in the near future Covid permiting. Do you guys still carry the bozeman? Love your videos and abundant knowledge oh hats. Subscribed. Have a safe and great year.
No Bozeman but we have the same hat from other manufacturers, called The Outback Hat on www.jjhatcenter.com
Or a simple,poplin rain hat,like our
rain safari,
Aberdeen, or
rain challenger.
www.jjhatcenter.com
or a cotton bucket is what I wear, hat called the Birdie on our site .I wear those..they can get wet..
Love that Tee Shirt,dude.
Thanks 😉!
Amazon ..!
What do you think is the top selling hat out of every category.
Probably the open road silver belly,
A Frank Zappa "Weasels Ripped My Flesh " tee shirt and a Ronnie Van Zant "gambler" I'm in...
Thanks !! u have good taste!
@@KTGHATS I have the album too...
Thought I was the only one to catch that …….FZ & RVZ…..
There are no Pawnees in this video btw
@@KTGHATS I was referring to the image under the crown. At 18:35 you show a Stetson Pawnee and as you mention it's part of the gun club you show us the inside and it has the picture of bird with the words, "The Gun Club", but if you go to the Stetson website and search Pawnee, a chocolate colored one comes up with a picture of a man caring for his horse inside the hat. I personally like the birds image better than the man and horse and thought it was interesting how it differed. But now that I know it's discontinued, I can't be picky about what's inside, since I do love the way the hat looks overall.
Took less than a second and it was apparent. Kevin's been methin around in the hood again. 💨💨😵🐉🐉
Jesus Christ died for you so live for him
Cool
What is the name of the model that you mentioned being a version of the Santa Fe without the chinstrap? Discussed at 10:15? Thanks!
@@KTGHATS great thanks!
Hi Kevin, great video!! Can you tell me what type of western hat Bradley Cooper wears in the movie Star is born. Thanks a lot!
That's a real Australian outback hat, as classical as one gets, I'd check out the Akubra Cattleman or maybe our Akubra Traveller,
That's an outback, kinda like something u would wear with a Western Duster Coat. Stetson Dune is also a bit similar
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! Thanks a lot!! I really appreciate you getting back to me.
"Floppy beaver".. Hahahaha!
😂
www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=floppy%20beaver love the Oprah reference
@@KTGHATS many many thanks for answering Kevin
Have searched the website and cannot find the Dune hat you're holding around the 7 min mark. Help.
What's the best way to stiffen and weather proof a wool felt hat btw?
where could i buy that one?
Four year old video , the models have all changed since then, they have new names.. but we will carry them again in September www.jjhatcenter.com
hey dude... what's the actual name of the hat you're holding at 10:20? black on black crushable.. i cant find it on your site anywhere! thanks
The Outback Hat

it's there

man i am blind! thanks!!!! I appreciate the reply. I thought it was made by stetson, that's why I couldn't find it :p
I was curious about a hat you featured in a previous video, the name of the video is felt typed and qualities from three weeks ago.
Timothy, at what point in the video the hat is on the screen?
(for instance, if it comes on at the 2 minutes & 30 second mark, write “2:30”) let me know, there are a lot of hats in that video
Tell me what number the counter is at,when the hat is being shown..
I know the feeling Timothy 😆
I'm sorry what did you call the Stetson can't understand the word. Is it a stetson pony?
There are a lot of stetsons here, the Stetson Dune, the Bozeman.. a few others, sorry hope this helps
Stetson sells a 1000x Diamente or whatever for 5K. Diamonds and 14k gold
I like that " gun club " hat ! How much are they?
$235 but they don’t arrive until September, very few left right now www.jjhatcenter.com/products/the-stetson-dune
@@KTGHATS Thanks for responding ! I'm not sure I can wear the 60 cm ( how do I measure for it - what is 60cm in " ? )
That stetson out back style hat You showed after that gun club hat is a great looker too .. how much $$ is it ?0
Slow Down Kevin I think you're getting a little too familiar with them hats. Lol.
I wonder if you could take an "open road" and put a 4" telescope crown on it?.....
U can telescope it, I’m not sure of how high though
U can telescope pretty much anything, no guarantee you’ll like it though, typical modifications is a teardrop, very common.but u can give it a tele.that’s a shallow hat though, u can’t get too high...
Im looking for that Hat from Billy crash,Django unchained. The white One. Do you habe One? If yes i wannt Do buy One. I only need Our store webside.
jjhatcenter.com
it is a 3" brim fedora w a very, very low teardrop shape... i have some hats like that, little hand shaping would help. Try the San Sebastian model(shaped by me) or the Stetson Dune
Hi Kev! Is there a crushable Open Road?
Nope.that shape only works well when stiff.the premier stratoliner is a softer version made of dress felt, not western felt. It comes open crown but O.Road is a common way to shape it,LBJ wore them.. not rollable, but way,way softer, not stiff, and it weighs less.
Great question thought!😎
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! Okey! Thank you for your reply! And thank you for your channel!
The route 66 by stetson has a cattleman crease but a larger brim, and its crushable.
I want a Stetson Pawnee, do they come in Silver Belly?
Stetson stopped making it Pawnee is discontinued, sorry.
dumb,I know . It sold like crazy.
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! Thanks for the reply. Really enjoyed your knowledgeable reviews
Does that Outback come in Grey? Is Stetson Sovereign a model or level of quality of the wool?
Sovereign is a quality,a series. It's not wool though,
it's rabbit fur....
The outback comes in tan or black only
@16:15 El patron=50X El presidente=100X Diamanté=1000X
Do you ship international?
Yes
Got any Akubras in stock?
Not right now.sorry,.mostly US made outbacks by Stetson
@@KTGHATS Thanks. Got a video series idea for you: "hats from around the world". I'm sure you get a lot of different hats in for reblocking, stretching, repair, etc so you would have a lot of very interesting insights. Thanks again!
Can a traditional resistol cowboy hat be teshaped to an outback style hat (akubra) shaped kind of like the second hat you showed the dune
calld2serve yes but it’ll look wider, I’ve done it for folks who won’t wear westerns, the brims tend to be wider, but it works.
This hat look like at Indiana Jone hat 2:00 ?
Yup.. except IJ had a ribbon band, not a suede band.
other than the band,
u are spot on 🤠
wish you modeled the hats or had a guy wear them to see how they look on someone

Drug lords need hats too. 😅
I've got Nothing against drug lords, they tend to dress in all white a lot,
..white suit, Panama..
I think drug lords should dress up in full clown makeup,
big,red nose,
giant shoes..like Stephen King's"It"
To me,that's much more intimidating than the white suit.

Ric Donato I’m trying to be a nicer person so I feel like I should make clear, that reply was meant to be over exaggerated and humorous and I’m sorry if it offended you, Mr. Donato.
Nice video but in a hat schop I expect a salesman who is dressed up a bit and I think a t-schirt is below all levels .
We have 5-10 other salesman who wear ties and dress shirts,if u feel more comfortable with the well dressed guy, there are many here
Or..tell me what day u want to visit.ill wear a blazer & polo shirt for you
