Howdy! First of all.. thanks for the information. I live on the western side of of Colorado called the western slope. Bought 4 stetsons for my seasons to wear for the style that goes with country style living.. got an "Open Road" in caribou Grey, "The Yancy" gambler flat brim in Phantom Grey, the "Los Alamos"(straw for summer) The "Markham" fedora crushable wool for fall/winter wear.. each hat gives me the confidence of being a stetson man for all occasions here in Colorado. Church, dates with my wife, outings, work, and just plain casual when I didn't have hair "beautified" up and just throw on my cowboy hat for the store. Own 4 stetsons but I'm sure they'll be more..

Plus you feel better about yourself as you dress up to wear the one for the occasion and season.

I got tired of the cattleman crown so I originally reshaped mine into a Tom Mix "gus" crease, but it looked goofy so I went for the classic style that you often see on 50's western movies and tv shows where the crown is teardrop shaped and has more of a fedora like shape

    • @charliesierra6919

I like the teardrop style crown too on my cowboy hats. Plus it's a nice change and seems a little cooler and more informal than the cattleman crown imho. I'm going to try a palm frond low Gus and roll the brim. Even though I originally thought they looked a little goofy.

Shape also depends on the type of work you do. Big flat brimmed hats are rough trying to keep on your head if you are swinging a rope. They also don't play well chasing cattle around the pine thickets here.
Then again I don't think most people watching stuff like this is wearing them for fashion more than function anyways.

Is just the small brim least likely to blow away? Is there an inner band or some way of keeping the hat on more securely?
Also,is there something that lady's prefer or that's recommendedable to them aside from sizing (or including sizing) ?

How would you categorize the gambler hat? I'm still new to cowboy culture, but it seems that there is a more nuanced topic of distinguishing "cowboy hats" with other western styles. I don't play Texas Hold Em, but I gravitated to the gambler because I felt it flattered my silhouette best. I am around 5-11 and have a long oval face, so a tocco hat might look comical on me. Same with a bowler, although I am jealous of people who can rock those. I tried a bowler once, but it it jus made me feel like I was in costume so I had to return it.
But I digress, it is interesting how there are many fasets of hat wearing, from occupation to personal style. I'm also a musician, so maybe subconsciously that's the missing piece to the puzzle. Haha.

LOL I am not sure exactly what a “ buckaroo “ is , best guess not good. Here in Maine we don’t see too many cowboy / western style hats. This is the land of “ ball caps” . I am a fishing guide and wear a brimmed hat when it’s raining as I cannot wear a hood whilst working, can’t hear and no peripheral vision. I also wear felt hats in the fall and love a Stetson straw hat in the summer but often wear a Tilley brimmed had as they take being used as a fly swatter Much Better 😂. Plus in my environment and use having a hat crushed when not worn is a constant issue. I know for some “ when not worn “ simply doesn’t happen.

Buckaroo is just another word for cowboy. It is derived from the Spanish word vaquero, the v is pronounced like a b in Spanish. When adapted to English it became pronounced buckaroo. They primarily inhabit the Great Basin region of the country.

    Great ideas for this Yankee!
Your video reminded me of the fun I had when I moved back to central Texas and decided to get a felt cowboy hat. I went to a large hat store in Buda and got intense personal attention from the clerk. He knew his stuff and even cut down the brim using a circular stylus on an arm. The hat shrunk over time (or my head got fatter), so sadly I don't have it. I wish I'd kept the Indian-style hat band, though. I never found one I liked as much, even at the ranch-attire stores here in southern California.
Here, I mostly wear a palm-style straw hat, but it's "off the rack." No personal attention at this store. The shape is slightly "taco" as you say. I'm not particularly patriotic, but I really like the red/white/blue striped hat band, more like a kerchief, from my worn-out hat. I get a lot of compliments on it.
    Thanks for the tips!

In the UK when wearing Aussie slouch hats we just use a chinstrap, allowing us to wear whatever we like in the windiest of weather, avoiding a hat chase across a couple of fields. The chinstrap can be looped inside the crown on the calmest of days. Then something I have to consider do I wear my spectacles or do I wear contact lenses so I don't look like the 'milky bar kid'? . A cotton cycling hat with the brim cut off is good sweat collector protecting your prized possession!

    • @StartupCowboy
      @StartupCowboy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

The hat dimensions definitely limit what you can expect from shape requirements.
To start make sure your hat is a 4 1/2 inch brim, which should also come with a 5 1/2 or 6 inch open crown.
Tell your shaper that you would like your crown to be 5 inches, or taller if you have more crown to work with. The crown style is also called a minnick if you need to know that.
As far as the brim is considered, the front of the hat is 12 inches from corner to corner. You can tell your shaper that you would like very soft corners. Another note is that you would like it to be as flat as possible with also having some dip in the front. Try to make sure that it is not too upright on the sides or the back because it will try to fold upwards.
Hope this helps, another thing that definitely helps hat shapers is to send them or show them a picture of the desired hat shape that you were looking for.

Another thing, shorter brim you can sometimes keep on when driving your car or truck, and it won't hit the head rest. If you have a big brim hat - no way, it is coming off, and then you probably need to lay it upside down somewhere, and it will eventually get a little wonky.

It should’ve always be removed when indoors or in a vehicle. If placed properly, the shape will maintain.

Nice video! I have worn straw hats my entire life and about two years ago started wearing felt hats.
If you have never worn a cowboy hat before I recommend starting with a Cattlemen’s crown and a 4” or 4.25” brim shaped in what makes you feel most comfortable. Wear that hat, get comfortable in it then step up to another hat that might be a different color, and style. Now you have two hats that you can switch up depending on what you are doing.
When you really get into hats next step is a custom hat made just for you. Those are awesome because they fit perfectly right from the start and are to your exact specifications.
You can get a straw hat in the $100 range. A 7X Stetson/Resistol, or American Hat is in that $225 / $300 range. Step into a custom 50% beaver / 50% hare felt and you are looking at $400. If you are making your living outdoors and want a hat to pass down a 100% beaver fur felt custom hat will go $650. - $1500+.
Great video can’t wait to see more!

Those are great tips! Glad you got into felts. I have a lot of fun picking everything out for mine.
I just starting filming the custom hat process last week when I got another custom hat. Hat won’t be done until around May but I’ll certainly have a video for that process when I get it.
      Thanks for watching!

Helpful information... thanks. I have found for me (small-ish build, narrow face), the less-wide brims look best, at least to my eye. Compliment my face-shape better and not overpowering. And, being from New England with our wide-range of seasons, it's important to have materials (straw and felt) to suit the current weather conditions. Love the look!

I don’t know if it has a specific name However it is common in Wyoming and Montana. The crown is a minnick. The brim is an ultra wide front (12” corner to corner) and it is set extra low. It has some dip to the front as well.

Hey is there any chance to find a site that is safe and sells cowboy hats that are literary without the ugly thing under the brim, couldn't find none all are fake...Where you brought yours, for my country those are expensive plus not very safe because gypsies wear here hats like that. And once i nearly fought one that tried to take my hat.

Where did this more recent brim shape trend cime from? The one where the bends in the front of the hat start WAY outside the eyes. If you're gonna go flat, go flat. Another way to split the difference is to keep the back of the brim flat with a pencil roll that fades into a 1990s cattleman crease with a bound edge.

Thanks! Born and raised in Wyoming and still currently reside here. Besides my general upbringing, I’ve trained horses for close to 15 years and I currently manage an arena and shape hats on the side. It’s been a great melting pot of a learning and experiencing lots of aspects of cowboy culture. I’m a lifelong learner and that’s how I wanted to shape my channel. There are so many things I’ve learned from old cowboys that that I think people should be able to TH-cam or Google and find out.

What type of hat is the “George strait look”?

    • @StartupCowboy
      @StartupCowboy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually it’s a 4 or a 4 1/4 brim with a standard crown height.
The crown is a cattleman. And the brim is pretty traditional. Front corners are the width of the persons face. Moderate to lower sides height. And a small dip in the front.
      Hope this helps!
