“If we take it for granted …” Eric Garcetti’s message on India-US ties after PM Modi’s Russia visit

  • US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti on July 11 talked about the relationship between United States and India. Addressing an event, he said, “It’s important for us as Americans and as Indians to remember the more we put into this relationship, the more we will get out. The more we insist on a kind of cynical calculation in the place of a trusted relationship, the less we will get. As I also remind my Indian friends, while it is wider and it is deeper than it’s ever been, it is not yet deep enough that if we take it for granted from the Indian side towards America, I’ll fight a lot of defence battles trying to help this relationship ahead.”

He says or infers that India has to trust USA without expecting anything and that’s how trust is gained.. and at the same time the democracy and religious tolerance in India is questioned by them and maligned and also their recent remarks about internal matters of India on Manipur unrest, and their military and finance assistance to Pakistan etc., tells a different story.. as per them India must always trust them and expect nothing and while we get nothing much and not even friendship but only be maligned and they act high handed towards us.. may be it’s high time they have to gain trust of India without interfering in our internal matters and be friendly

Just shows how disconnected Garcetti is when it comes to developing TRUST with USA. He should look no further than the recent past - when India sought help with GPS coordinates during Kargil war, the most recent Covid time when raw materials for vaccines were stopped from shipment and sheltering and supporting known Khalistani terrorist Pannun. Does not bode well towards enhancing TRUST. is this not?

I don't think we need to take this relationship beyond a point. India's strategic autonomy and non-alignment is a laxmanrekha no administration can ever cross. We are not interested and according to our policy objectives can never be a close ally of any particular bloc - we are to establish ourselves as a bloc unto itself in due course.
India's stance is not new, we've had this since independence. We will not scuttle our growth and energy security. In fact if the US pushes India beyond a certain point, we can always buy more of our gear from Russia and France as we have done for the past 70 years. If there is no convergence of interests then so be it, or autonomy comes first.
After Russia, China and India, the US is soon going to end up running out of countries to sanction. In a bid to isolate Russia and ignore the complex geopolitics of Asia with an intricate power balance between Russia, India and China wherein they all use each other to balance the third man out, I wish America in their hubris does not end up isolating itself from the global engine of growth for this century.

The USA is appearing to Indians exactly like Pakistan used to about 25 years ago. This is just like Vajpayee 's Lahore Bus journey - we heard Nawaz Sharif talk about "improving trust" and then a few months later - to improve "trust" they do a Kargil.
In 2024 , the US says we need to improve trust and also - comment on Manipur , Support Khalistanis , run propaganda against India ,interfere in elections .
Trust is permanently broken now- its in the nature of Indians not to forgive or forget backstabbers . Anyone with an ounce of geo-political knowledge will know why France , Israel and Russia - are held in such high regard by Indians .

I do not see any trust we can have with USA which had a history of working against India's interests propping up Pakisthan, facilitating China as a super power .He should answer why USA was neutral till 1941 even after 2 years of world war 2, and it took sides only after Japan attacked Pearl Harbour .Why not US use Infia's proximity to put more pressure on Russia to end war, than resorting its usual lecturing of a third world country .Does US expect we should not have any relationship with Rusdia.zIf that was the benchmarking of any relationship, why US sides with Pakisthan in 1965 and 71 wars and transformed into an adversary of India. This Ambassodor does not know the history of his country's s relationship with India

I think the ambassador has a point relations do flourish when you give love or trust only then you get it back more than what you give ... Take the example of Bharath and USs*. 😜... Actually he could have also given a example of this sort to strengthen his point.... USs* gave trust, support in our hour of need and in return got it back even after 50 years if I'm correct... But we must be aware, not every country calling them self world power is worth trusting... They switch sides in no time .. what happend to Saddam ..😜

What “defensive battles” did Eric Garcetti fight on behalf of India when the U.S. government accused the Modi government of the attempted assassination of a U.S. citizen of Indian origin, who is considered a terrorist in India? That terrorist/ citizen of the U.S. openly threatened to assassinate the Indian Prime Minister, threatened Indian diplomats and even threatened to blow up an Air India plane. So far, the U.S. government has not made any arrests when Khalistan separatists set fire to the Indian consulate in San Francisco, quite some time ago.
The Indian government, on the other hand, has allowed the extradition of an Indian citizen, Nikhil Gupta, who the U.S. government named in the attempted assassination of the terrorist/ U.S. citizen. The U.S. government has still not extradited the Pakistani-U.S citizen, David Headley alias Gilani, to India, for his role in masterminding 26/11, the worst terrorist attack on India.
Moreover, if the U.S. truly respects India as a democracy, they would respect India’s sovereign decisions on its foreign relations. The U.S. continues to engage with Pakistan despite the latter’s sponsorship, training and induction of terrorists into India, who kill innocent citizens, many of whom happen to be Hindus, or soldiers.

Lol this is classic plpy of muddying the water by pointing fingers at the preseumed "servant" for not bringing the high hanging fruit whilst milking the low hanging fruit by firing off the presumed servant's shoulders- camouflaging west's benefits in a relationship as west's benevolent assistance has been the hallmark of the western exclusivism since its colonialist days. It is the united states that is poised to benefit strategically with much higher dividends from India's strategic alignment vis a vis containment of China and it is united states that benefits from trade with India equally and benefits strategically in terns of furthering its hegemony in the region with presence of its corporate businesses in Ibdia that leverage their control on technology that made headway breakthroughs as sovereign entities wgen developing economies like India used to be colonies thus deprived of a level playing field. The US-India relationship was never about any agenda of the US pushing India to a posture beneficial to western strategic interests vis a vis Russia where India's strategic interests do not align, by dictating terms with mutually exclusive and exhaustive options (when the west have track recird of doing business with China and providing military weapons and aid to Pakistan extremely inimical to India that India does not ask the west to desist from as precondition of deepening of India-west relationship) to the detriment of Indian economy and its core interests of national security and territorial integrity the west expects its condescendingly presemued "rentier army/porter on the hire" India to sacrifce at the altar of wrstern strategic interests in a faraway continent, in the holy name of astute values (like rule of law, territorial integrity, sovereignty, democracy, freedom of speech, freedom of press, social justice, liberty, equality etc) the US led nexus of neocolonialist western deepstates have violated innumerable times with direct military invasions, war crimes, colored revolutions and regime change operations, soft regime change operations through public opinion molding through social engineering harnessing their deeo pockets and outreach of certain western mediahouses beholden to these western deepstates, through sanctions, threat of sanctions, leveraging semi autonomous constitutional government organisations of the west that work as frontvorgnanistations of western deep states to manufacture and push particular narratives to be hardwired into multilateral government institutions like the UN, IMF, World bank, WEF etc where the wrsteern deepstates possess disproportionate power and geopolitical sway, through support to dictatorships and theicracies as well as instating puppet governments on bamboozling pretext of preservation of amsome other value (like "humanitarian interventiin", "elimination of weapon of mass destruction", "resuscitation of democracy" blah blah so long as it suits their strategic interests (including military support to Pakistani military dictatorship against democratic intervention undermining Ibdia's territorial integrity and then leveraging their deep clouts as victors of the world war 2 to push the then weak and fledgling Indian state retreat on loss of its sovereign territories by accepting the territory as disputed thus tacitly legitimising illegitimate Pakistani occupation of sovereign Indian territories- a complete opposite stance to that of the west on matter of Ukraine's territorial integrity that they have been actively supporting with military aid because it serves their strategic interests, on top of intervention into India's domestic political discourse attempting a soft regime change in India to reinstate a weak government of "fellow traveler" old establishment political parties with vested interests of clingingvonto power anywhow making them amenable to bending over backwards and acquiescing to wanton whimsical demands of western deepstates seeking tweak in India's defense, foreign, trade, intetnal socioeconomic politicies aimed at furthering western hegemonic influence in the region at the exoense of India's sivereignty and its core interests of its territorial integrity, national security and socioeconomic growth on its own terms). Good or bad internally, right or wrong way in its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has valid reasons to perceive their national security threat with the burgeoning presence of a Russia oriented military bloc with superior cumukative economy, purchasing power, glibal clout and technological superiority in its immeduate neighborhood pretty much the same way the west perceives Russia as a threat, regardless of western propaganda on russia and russian propaganda on the west and a total war between them might result in nuclear exchanges bringing an end to to human civilisation thus needing dipomatic engagement between them and discussion and that the west given its track record throughout last few centuries as well as recent past has no authority to project itsepf on a high moral ground vis a vis Russia's invasion of Ukraine or to lecture India - beyond this observation, India has no role to play in Russia-west dynamic. If the US led west intend to push India more, they might as well go ahead and pull the trigger calling it quits on India-west relations but they should also remember that this souring of relations will neither be a one way traffic nor will it be left at the west's choice to thaw the relations at its whims.
