In the early days they would have a happy jokey song and then a couple of songs about violence and suicide and then back to being a big joke, Just look at the end of Gordon. They lost that when Steve left and it really is a demarcation between the old days and today where they're really just a pop band.
I don't know about "always". They certainly never took *themselves* very seriously, but they certainly sang about *subjects* that they appear to take seriously. Just on Stunt, you have tracks like this and Some Fantastic, but also Call and Answer, and Light Up My Room. Then you have a bunch that fall in between; like Never is Enough, or Alcohol. To me it's less that they're always joking and more that they're comfortable enough with themselves to goof off and talk about some hard truths in the same breath.
That was fun. I really enjoyed all the nostalgia with the cars from tv shows, tv shows mentioned in the lyrics, Evel Knievel motorcycle stunt. Very cool!
😂 The cars they were driving were from "Starsky And Hutch" and "Dukes Of Hazard!" Doubt they were real, close replicas. "It's All Been Done" is my favorite Barenaked Ladies song. It was used in the intro for the awesome but short-lived "Baby Blues" cartoon series based on the comic strip!
0:59-It's a really fun play on words, isn't it? But how about the stand-up bass player working it? Love the sound of those things..they have such a deep but rich tone. 3:00-Oooo, they're rolling in the same '73 red Gran Torino used in the 70's "Starsky and Hutch" crime drama series! Video's just as cool as the song!
Very Fun 😁 music from this band from Canada 🇨🇦. Can't help but smile 😊.
Glad you enjoy it! 🩷
Barenaked Ladies were pretty much ALWAYS joking, weren't they? That's a big part of what makes them so much fun.

They were serious on some tunes

Is it possible to die from nostalgia???
Can't listen this one without seeing Eugene Levy dancing from American Pie movie 👌
One of my favorite bands! Yeah, BNL doesn’t take themselves too seriously, which is one of the reasons I love them.
This song is so nostalgic at this point.

They also wrote and performed the theme for “The Big Bang Theory”
Great song, fantastic reaction

For a GREAT song that is more reflective, check out "Old Apartment" from "Born on a Pirate Ship".
One good thing about growing up in Detroit: we knew Canadian artists way sooner than the rest of America.

Their music is so much fun. Love this band
This is the epidemy of having fun playing music while not taking anything you do seriously whatsoever.

Weird!!! lol thank you ☺️ 🩷🩷
Love BNL! You should do a reaction to James Blunt - The Girl that Never Was
You should listen to their song Brian Wilson or Call and Answer as something more serious from them
Very nice
