The lyrics are full of references that are pure 90s pop culture (“watching X-Files with no lights on, we’re dans la maison, I hope the smoking man’s in this one”) and a little bit of local Toronto lore. I have read that the song is about a big fight in a relationship, which BNL has confirmed as well. Fan theories take it further and say the couple are going through a period (one week) where they’re both too stubborn to apologize, and she won’t be intimate with him so the fast lyrics are his stream-of-consciousness as he’s trying to get his mind to think of anything else so he doesn’t end up being the one to cave and apologize. Barenaked Ladies' cover of Bruce Cockburn's (another Canadian icon) "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" is excellent. This song includes one of my all-time favourite lyrics: "...Got to kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight..."

There's a lot of pop culture visuals in this video. The opening is similar to a sequence from the movie Chitty Bhitty Bang Bang. The cars the band ends up in are the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazard tv show and Ford Gran Torino from Starsky & Hutch tv show. BNL has a HUGE catalog of great music, there is plenty to explore with them. We love BNL!! We've seen them live a few times and they never disappointed. They have SO many good songs! I'd recommend If I had a $1,000,000 for you next. It's another really fun one. We compiled a playlist of BNL songs for my wife for when our kids were due. Our oldest was born to Brian Wilson and the youngest was Call and Answer. Both times the docs commented on how much they enjoyed the playlist, too. Oh, and the choice was extra fitting because both our children were girls!
Chickity China, the Chinese chicken is a nod to Busta Rhymes from the A Tribe Called Quest song Scenario. He says chickity choco, the chocolate chicken. It’s such a fun nod!
Fun Fact: When this band was first breaking out. The Mayor of Toronto banned them from playing in that city simply because she found the bands name offensive. Given their success since then, I bet she kicks herself thinking back to her poor decision. Great reaction you two!!
As everyone says: so many great songs. These guys were truly a Live act, always chatting with the audience, every show was unique. Favorite songs to check out: "If I had a Million Dollars" (of course), "Another Postcard (with Chimpanzees)", Pinch Me, and the great, "It's All Been Done Before".
My Son is 41 and grew up with the 90s music. I'm 66 now, and I still love Barenaked ladies -- this song in particular -- and most of his music! Great, nostalgic song choice and reaction! Thank you! ✌💙✌
I have been waiting for ya'll to finally check out my fellow Canadians! Barenaked Ladies (or BNL) are legit Canadian legends, and they have SO MANY great songs. Definitely hope you guys check out more of their stuff. P.S They also do the theme song for The Big Bang Theory
The Old Apartment is a banger as well as Alcohol and you could even throw in Alternative Girlfriend. They also do a killer cover of Bruce Cockburn - Lovers in a Dangerous Time. Call and Answer, Brian Wilson and What a Good Boy if you want some great powerful vocals. BNL 🇨🇦🔥
Yes, Yes, Yes, "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" is a wonderful cover. RSR might like Bruce Cockburn's ( pronounced Co-Burn) song "If I Had a Rocket Launcher". 🎸😎
Jane is SO good! I've got to hang out/and or work with them a bunch of times. It's is one of the ONLY songs I've never seen them do live, in full or humming out loud in the line for a toilet...(DAMN funny story!)
I remember back in the day a portland radio station was having a contest for Barenaked Ladies concert tickets. A little contest they called Barenaked Bowling. I have never laughed so hard and been so traumatized at the same time. I miss the 90's. lol
BNL has such a great catalog, dating back to their first album, “Gordon”, and single, “Brian Wilson”. They’re a real rabbit hole. I’ve seen them live three times. you’re always guaranteed a great show with some improvised rap by Ed Robertson.
I especially like “Jane”. That song always reminds me of this girl I had a crush on in college who was way too cool for me. I married that girl a few years later. We’re happily married after 25 years, and she’s still to cool for me.
I love this one. They also wrote a cute song called "If I Had a Million Dollars" that you'd enjoy. And they did a wonderful Christmas carol with Sarah McLaughlin, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, combined with We Three Kings. That one is fantastic!
Check out " If I had a million dollars" next! Here's the thing with "The Bare Naked Ladies", they are 14 year old boys in men's bodies! Their lyrics are brilliant but they almost always come from a place of youthful innocence. Raw fun!!
Facts right here - I’ve been to so many incredible concerts - Janet Jackson, the Cure, NIN, Cyprus Hill, Pink, Green Day, Garth Brooks (who went swinging on a rope across the stage)…and Barenaked Ladies was the absolute best. Incredible live, y’all. Incredible.
I had a friend at my first job out of college who loved this song and he knew every word and he'd always sing it. He passed away young and has been gone nearly 24 years but I will always think of him when I hear this.
Their music is diverse. Their lyrics are usually quite clever whether it is at this speed or slower. I would suggest some of their tunes in this order. If I Had a Million Dollars Pinch Me It's All Been Done The Old Apartment They are a great band, funny guys, and excellent live. Their videos are creative. Some videos such as, this one and Pinch Me are pretty big productions and match the songs brilliantly.
So glad you liked! One of my faves who I feel don't get enough love. If you wanna do more check out "The Old Apartment", "Pinch me" or "It's all Been Done"! Great reaction as always!
I love BNL. Their lyricism is so fun and clever. "If I Had a Million Dollars" and "Pinch Me" are a couple of other really good ones. But they have a ton of good songs.
A couple of these guys went to my high school in Scarborough a couple of years after me. They were banned from playing a New Years Eve concert in Toronto due to their name. Check out the songs Grade Nine, Enid, If I had a $1,000,000.
I am SO HAPPY you've finally discovered BNL! Our soundtrack in 90s Canada. They are the nicest guys too, and amazing live. I'd recommend "If I Had $1,000,00", "Call and Answer", "Pinch Me", "Yoko Ono", "Enid"... Always guaranteed great music.
Also a funny story about this video: when the motorcyclist was prepping for her jump, the band were told, "Don't look at her" if you watch the video, every single one of them are watching her go!
And at the end of the song, they sing "It'll still be two days before you say you're sorry" twice, then "Birchmount Stadium, Home of the Robbie" which is a curling ring near where they grew up in Scarborough, a suburb of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Robbie is a curling tournament. Nice little comment on their hometown.
KISS - "God Gave Rock n' Roll to You" 1991. This song was played on radio and was a hit as part of a movie soundtrack "Bill & Ted". Great music video and features both Paul & Gene. You guys will enjoy. Hope to see the reaction.
YEAH! Finally BNL!!! They were so fun to see live. Saw them 3 times. For this song, you had mad props if you could sing all the lyrics! Keep going. You won’t be sorry. ❤
BNL all the way baby!! As a Canadian growing up in awesome Vancouver in the early '90's BNL were discovered when they went live into a video booth in Toronto outside of a TV studio and started spitting out tracks while other peeps were saying "Hi" or "Mark I love you!" or "Toronto Rocks" Talk about taking your shot!! Initially a duo of Ed Robertson and Steven Page (Besties since grade 4 as they bonded thru music) the band quickly grew to a quintet, adding brothers Jim and Andy Creeggan and Tyler Stewart by 1990. These guys reached ICONIC status in Canada (Major music award winners too). Paul McCarty said in 2008 that he enjoyed listening to them, that they were better at harmonizing that he & John ever were an that he'd like to record some songs with them. Cheers from Vancouver - Luv listening/watching your reaction videos!!
I live in Canada and a few years ago my daughter’s school did a talent show and the theme was Canadian musicians so of course there was Bryan Adams, The Tragically Hip, Alanis Morissette and others. She had to do this song and we practiced it for weeks together and she nailed it. Another Canadian band you should check out is Great Big Sea. I know my man Jay will totally dig the fiddling.
Rap was still hot in the 90s. This was never BNLs game but they did this song to prove their diversity. Good song to start with but you’ll see they’re more into rock than rap. The song Brian Wilson about The Beach Boys singer is my personal favorite.
That took me right back to 1998, waiting for the bus to my early lecture at university playing this on my beloved Discman, reading the newspaper with the headline "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." Half my life ago. Shit!
This was from their fourth album called Stunt. This record and song is what made them known in the USA. They are a fun group with fun music and their live shows are FANTASTIC! I’ve seen them live six or seven times. I’d suggest next for them Be My Yoko Ono, The Old Apartment, Shoebox, what A Good Boy, A, Box/Set, Break Your Heart, and Pinch Me. In fact, just listen to their albums Gordon, Born On A Pirate Ship, Maybe You Should Drive, Stunt, Everything To Everyone, and Maroon. Believe it or not, a vast majority of all the songs on these albums are pretty good. As you can probably tell, I’m a huge fan of their’s.
They were nothing in Canada until a government clerk in Toronto canceled there show due to the name. After that EVERYONE coast to coast wanted to know who they were. A GREAT Canadian band!
Only older people will get the shout outs in the video's. The cars they are driving are the General Lee from 'Dukes of Hazzard' and Starsky's car from 'Starsky and Hutch'. And the girl is dressed in daredevil Evel Knievel's get up.
FINALLY!! I've been waiting for you guys to get around to listening to the BNL. And you pulled up the perfect song for your first listen. 👍 Thanks for all the memories and glad you both were SHOOK! ♥️
I was in my 20’s when I found this band and went to three of their concerts-they are a BLAST! Took me SO long to learn the lyrics to this one. You couldn’t just look them up online back then-LOL. If I Had A Million Dollars was HUGE at concerts. Thousands of people singing at the top of their lungs. So much fun. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! 😘
The goal was to try to rap the lyrics too! "I still got both the rug burns on my knees" when she tackled him in the living room was my favorite part! 😂👍🏻🫶🏻💜
If you haven't heard their song "Break Your Heart" you've missed out on how great these guys are. It's a totally different vibe from One Week, but I think you guys would love it.
They did a really sweet cover of 🇨🇦Bruce Cockburn’s “Lovers in a Dangerous Time”…and their first album “Gordon” is so cheeky…nothing like the cadence of One Week, but still fun and for me it’s instant nostalgia.
They are one of my 2-3 favorite bands, so I’m excited that you’re into them. The rapping thing isn’t in a lot of their songs but they always do a ton of improv and rapid lyrics in their live shows. This was their first big hit in the US (they’re Canadian) and the first to capture that part of their live vibe. You should listen to Another Postcard , 4 Seconds, or the full version of the Big Bang Theory theme song for more of the verbal gymnastics. But I think you’d also love Brian Wilson, if I had $1,000,000, Old Apartment, and Boomerang. They even have a fun kids album Snacktime your kids would enjoy and great Christmas album with some awesome original songs.
Awwww I miss the 90's where there was Barenaked Ladies everywhere... At the Mall....Barenaked Ladies.... At the Movies in the lobby/arcade Barenaked Ladies.... Waking down the street and you hear some provocative noises pulsating from the car parked at the side of the road, so you turn and focus your attention and right there in broad daylight you notice the Barenaked Ladies....and best of all if you were super duper lucky you'd come gome from a hard days work and there's your wife, just got finished cleaning and is in the middle of making dinner along with some Barenaked Ladies.... I love my country and our stereotype... Thanks Canada and sorry for the rant, bud..

The outfit the motorcycle woman wears is based on what Evel Kneivel, a motorcyclist who performed huge stunts including jumping buses!
It's so Gen X!
BNL has a HUGE catalog of great music, there is plenty to explore with them. They also did the theme song to The Big Bang Theory and are still recording, they just released a 3 song EP this past week.

As a kid in the 90s, this was THE song lol
I love this band! The whole album “Gordon” is amazing. I love the song “What a Good Boy”. ❤
That one and "The Flag" are my favorite serious tracks from "Gordon."
Gordon is by far their best album as a life long fan. The Flag puts me near to tears every time.
Brian Wilson. . . that song is very fun to play despite the bleak subject matter.
Brian Wilson, and If I had $1,000,000 are my karaoke jams.
You guys gotta do Semi-Charmed Life by
Third Eye Blind...... another 90's hit!!!
For a different vibe from them check out Call and Answer. IMO one of the most beautiful songs ever written and sung!
But they should NOT do the video version, because that cuts out an entire verse.
Probably best known for the title song for Big Bang Theory. So much fun to see in live concert. These Canadians are really fun to see live!
Hell yes....now all I hear in my mind is ..the whole universe was in a dark dense state..❤
Not from Canada, huh? 😂 Definitely NOT what they're best known for here 😊
For me I know this from the Digimon the movie. I first heard it I could not get it out of my head.
didn't they also get the Malcolm in the Middle theme? My memory may be failing me.
@@wolvesjr34 That was They Might Be Giants, wasn't it? "Boss Of Me".
Lol, "I want to rewind...I want to watch it again" was CLASSIC! Peace, Love!!
“Hot like wasabi when I bust rhymes, big like Leann Rimes, because I’m all about value”. I still love this song and crank it up when it comes on.
Same here. I've been listening to that song since it came out. I feel old but I don't care
I've seen them live probably 15 times. They're one of the bands who are even better in person. And they improv!
These days I prefer Steven Page’s solo stuff to what the remaining foursome are doing.
The Old Apartment, It's All Been Done, If I Had A Million Dollars, Pinch Me, Jane, Brian Wilson, Another Postcard, Lovers in a Dangerous Time, Call and Answer, Falling for the First Time, Shoebox... and so on. Definitely hope you guys check out more of their stuff.
P.S They also do the theme song for The Big Bang Theory
Shoutout to Bruce Cockburn's original version of Lovers. Both are awesome renditions. Don't ask me to choose whose is better.
@@Leafsdude They should listen to both and then listen to Bruce Cockburn's _If I Had A Rocket Launcher._
BNL 🇨🇦🔥
+1 on Old Apartment
Yes!! You named all the songs I would have recommended. 🙌🇨🇦
Yes, Yes, Yes, "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" is a wonderful cover. RSR might like Bruce Cockburn's ( pronounced Co-Burn) song "If I Had a Rocket Launcher". 🎸😎
YES! - Lovers in a Dangerous Time!
Yes! I'm a big fan of Cockburn and love BNL's cover of Lovers in a Dangerous Time.
HIDDEN GEM ALERT!! “Jane” is my absolute favorite song by BNL! It’s part of my set list when I play solo. BEAUTIFUL SONG!! 😊🎶💙
agreed!
Why does it have to be about you ? You-you-you !
Jane is SO good! I've got to hang out/and or work with them a bunch of times. It's is one of the ONLY songs I've never seen them do live, in full or humming out loud in the line for a toilet...(DAMN funny story!)
😆@@bobd2659
YES it's so good
I remember back in the day a portland radio station was having a contest for Barenaked Ladies concert tickets.
Absolutely love Barenaked Ladies. They are the real deal and so original. Thanks for the great reaction on BNL. 👏👏🇨🇦
This really is one of the great songs of its day. They just kill it. So awesome. Glad you all enjoyed it.
I love the reference to pop culture of the era. Kurusawa, Harrison Ford, etc. BNL is a great band.
I love this one. They also wrote a cute song called "If I Had a Million Dollars" that you'd enjoy. And they did a wonderful Christmas carol with Sarah McLaughlin, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, combined with We Three Kings. That one is fantastic!
That whole Christmas album is cool - I like "Elves Lament" and "Green Christmas" too.
Check out " If I had a million dollars" next! Here's the thing with "The Bare Naked Ladies", they are 14 year old boys in men's bodies!
Their lyrics are brilliant but they almost always come from a place of youthful innocence. Raw fun!!
IMO, Barenakedladies have a ton of variety in their catalogue, i think its a ton of fun to discover what anybody could like from them.
Being 38 and not hearing that song in forever the lyrics all came back! They flow so hard! ❤ ya'll!
What A Good Boy is my favorite song by BNL. Absolutely my favorite band ❤
Their music is diverse. Their lyrics are usually quite clever whether it is at this speed or slower. I would suggest some of their tunes in this order.
If I Had a Million Dollars
Pinch Me
It's All Been Done
The Old Apartment
They are a great band, funny guys, and excellent live. Their videos are creative. Some videos such as, this one and Pinch Me are pretty big productions and match the songs brilliantly.
I'd forgotten about If I Had a Million Dollars!! Also very good.
the old apartment… underrated song👍
So glad you liked! One of my faves who I feel don't get enough love. If you wanna do more check out "The Old Apartment", "Pinch me" or "It's all Been Done"! Great reaction as always!
Brian Wilson!
A brilliant band! They were so witty and varied. "It's All Been Done" is just a fantastic song, with a great video too.
"WHEN IT COMES TO THE 90'S ... EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED" PERFECT TERM FOR 90'S MUSIC!! AMAZING DECADE!!
"What a Good Boy" will make you cry. Amazing vocal performance 👏🏾
Yes! What a Good Boy, Jane and Brian Wilson go straight to the heart for me.
Tonight is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel is both heartbreaking and beautiful.
Remember that while he was rapping, he was playing the guitar at the same time. Great review guys!
I love BNL. Their lyricism is so fun and clever. "If I Had a Million Dollars" and "Pinch Me" are a couple of other really good ones. But they have a ton of good songs.
MAPLE MONDAYS, MAPLE MONDAYS, MAPLE MONDAYS!!!! Love your reaction to a quintessential Canadian band. And I LOVE this band! Nice one team Rob Squad!!
A couple of these guys went to my high school in Scarborough a couple of years after me. They were banned from playing a New Years Eve concert in Toronto due to their name. Check out the songs Grade Nine, Enid, If I had a $1,000,000.
Yop. That was Toronto mayor Barbara Hall 🤣
They are PHENOMENAL!!! Love this group! I feel like everyone forgot the 90s! Thanks for listening to great music from all eras. ❤❤❤❤❤
War On Drugs is my favorite song by them.
KISS - "God Gave Rock n' Roll to You" 1991. This song was played on radio and was a hit as part of a movie soundtrack "Bill & Ted". Great music video and features both Paul & Gene. You guys will enjoy. Hope to see the reaction.
**** BARENAKED LADIES performed the Theme Songs for Both the "FRIENDS" & "THE BIG BANG THEORY" TV Shows!
YEAH! Finally BNL!!! They were so fun to see live. Saw them 3 times. For this song, you had mad props if you could sing all the lyrics! Keep going. You won’t be sorry. ❤
And the theme song for the😊 Big Bang
I’ve seen them three times as well including New Year’s Eve 1999 in Buffalo, NY. Never will forget that one. 😂
They were so fun live.
BNL all the way baby!!
As a Canadian growing up in awesome Vancouver in the early '90's BNL were discovered when they went live into a video booth in Toronto outside of a TV studio and started spitting out tracks while other peeps were saying "Hi" or "Mark I love you!" or "Toronto Rocks"
Talk about taking your shot!!
That took me right back to 1998, waiting for the bus to my early lecture at university playing this on my beloved Discman, reading the newspaper with the headline "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."
Half my life ago. Shit!
FINALY!!!!! My favorite Canadian band. So glad you love them. So talented musically, funny and super talented. Lots of great songs to checkout too.
Awesome underrated group. They did a Christmas album that is one of my favorites. Can't listen to BNL without smiling!
Thanks for all the memories and glad you both were SHOOK!
Weird AL did a spoof of this, called " Jerry springer" it's hilarious
Unfortunately "give the people what they want" doesn't apply to Weird Al. They've been asked over and over and over to react to him but they won't.
@DerekScottBland maybe they're trying and it gets taken down. I know certain artists take down everything
@@dawnpatrol700 - nah, Al's been reacted to by the top reviewers and the unknowns, I never hear of his stuff getting taken down.
The goal was to try to rap the lyrics too! "I still got both the rug burns on my knees" when she tackled him in the living room was my favorite part! 😂👍🏻🫶🏻💜
Lovers in a dangerous time, great harmonies
Love so many of their songs! My favourite is still "Call and Answer", but they've got a bunch to choose from!
If you haven't heard their song "Break Your Heart" you've missed out on how great these guys are. It's a totally different vibe from One Week, but I think you guys would love it.
If you guys want a high energy band check out Cherry Poppin Daddies song called Zoot Suit Riot
They did a really sweet cover of 🇨🇦Bruce Cockburn’s “Lovers in a Dangerous Time”…and their first album “Gordon” is so cheeky…nothing like the cadence of One Week, but still fun and for me it’s instant nostalgia.
Such memories of jamming to this and pretending I knew all the words!!!! See also Two Princes.....
Another great Canadian band. Check out "If I had a million dollars."
Forget what everyone else says...The Old Apartment is their best song
It's may fave one live too. I'd lose it every time it started. I miss Stephen, but it's still so great live.
You need to go through their whole collection!!! If I had a Million Dollars, lovers in a dangerous time, old apartment, pinch me, big bang theme song, and many more!!
This is such a vibe. Full of sunshine. I think you guys would dig a British group SUPERGRASS and their 1995 hit ALRIGHT which reached chart position 2 here in the UK. Pure joy, the band have the same level of fun as Barenaked Ladies.
