  • Rahm Emanuel said, "you never want a serious crisis to go to waste." The same thing holds for serious health events. Such events are opportunities to change habits. Michael Gorham`s near-death heart attack saved his life. He lost 50 pounds, got off of all meds, and felt 20 years younger.
Michael Gorham is Industry Professor at IIT Stuart School of Business and Director of the Center for Financial Innovation. He serves on boards or committees of the CBOE Futures Exchange, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the GARP Risk Review, Futures Industry Magazine, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He is co-author of two books; India's Financial Markets: An Insider's Guide and Electronic Exchanges: The Global Transformation from Pits to Bits. He was director of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's Division of Market Oversight, economist at the Fed and VP of Research and of International Marketing at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

My died at 61 from a heart attack. I had the same fear you had about your dad’s heart attack. I changed my diet to a healthy and mostly plant based diet and began to walk which I could hardly so. I weighed 250 lbs. today, I’m down to 219 and walk two miles 4-6 times weekly.

Michael Gorham's story is my husband's exact story. After his heart attack 7 years ago I went straight to the library and found Dr. Esselstyn's book. We changed our diets right away and we still eat a whole food planted based diet today. We can't be more thankful for Dr. Esselstyn and his message!

So this resonates almost 100% with me. I was umming and arrring about calling 911 and then I got massive jaw ache and that was it. 911. 100% RDA block. Stented within 30 mins of arriving at hosp. Dr Esselstyn's diet is my diet now. I'm glad that you came off the meds too, that's my goal !!

Dr Esselstyn's book, with the advice from my cardiologist, has saved me too, from an almost certain heart attack and death. He is truly a marvellous man!

I thought I could drive myself to the hospital which is literally around the corner 😂 I called 911 and used all my concentration to give my exact details while the pain bore down I used kagel breathing as a balance - I held on. 90% blockage of the circumflex, 100% blockage off the lad. Emergency bypass x4.
I was lucky but remain with heart failure 28ef. Changed my life for sure. 👍🏼 loving every day 😊

I just can't wrap my head around how olive oil damages us. My ancestors (greeks & turks) have eaten this oil for centuries and they were just fine. Maybe it's more of a short-term detox. I'll agree with that.

Dragovic Aleksa They were thriving. My villagers for example easily got to the age of 90-95 with no diseases whatsoever. Except for those who came in contact with alcohol... we have those aswell!

I suspect that refined foods + refined oils are basically massively toxic when combined. You need to eliminate them so that there's no chance of them mixing. My understanding is that refined sugars cause inflammation and oxidative damage of the arteries and then the refined oils are used in cholesterol synthesis which is then used to repair the damage. Since you have large quantities of these products in your system when eating refined foods you end up with massive oxidative stress. So you and up with atherosclerosis and an eventual heart attack like I have had if you over indulge (and sugar and oils in the SAD is so easy to overdo as it's ubiquitous). The big issue is concentrations. Refined products are highly concentrated so their effects are amplified in the cardiovascular system and the organs. WFPB is the answer. This is what your body has evolved to digest.

This is great information but I think genetics plays a powerful role in heart disease. My dad was a boozer and I smoked a lot of weed and rarely drank but we both had our 1st heart attack at 57.

I am all for eating healthy but seek a second opinion before going off the meds that you get after a heart attack.

Yes , I see the point in going on a plant-based diet , but Steve Jobs was on a plant-based diet , but he didn’t make it that long ... He could have avoided the heart attack , but how about other diseases that you may be at a higher risk of getting as a result of eating plant-based diet ?

Natasha Tomlinson veganism doesn’t help my illness which is a B12 deficiency/malabsorption issue and subsequent DAO deficiency. In fact, if it didn’t cause it it definitely contributed heavily to it.

Not just plant based, other factors for health are - it should be non-processed, direct from farm, not from factory, eating from all food groups (plant based), detox, sunlight, fresh air, walking, emotional and spirtual status, cicadium rythm etc.
