    Is this a figma review? Is this a sketch review? SURPRISE! It's both!
    FIGMA OR SKETCH?! It's the question on every product designers mind! At AJ&Smart, we're building prototypes on the regular, which means we're using a lot of prototyping apps. Sketch has been a favourite among AJ&Smart-ers for a while, but now we're using Figma more regularly. Find out why and when you should use Sketch and when you should make the switch to Figma
    This is a review of the Sketch app and Figma in a basic sense. We touch on what we like about both Sketch and Figma and why we think you should use them in your prototyping. And some tips for using both of the design tools.
    About us:
    We are AJ&Smart, a small design agency/studio based in Berlin. We are crazy about Design Sprints and innovation and we teach everything we know right here on TH-cam. If you want to learn more about how to run the best Design Sprint EVER, subscribe and we'll help you every step of the way.

    As a Sketch user in the past and as a Figma user now, I was actually impressed by Figma's performance, so I decided to tested it with Instruments (Instruments is a powerful and flexible performance-analysis and testing tool that’s part of the Xcode tool set.) And Figma is more performant than Sketch, it uses way less memory which is very important for huge files and when you have many symbols and maybe even many files open at the same time.
    Figma has a desktop version and even if it is a web-based technology product it outperforms Sketch at the moment.
    And you can work offline with Figma you just need to have the file open previously, yes it's a pain in the ass, but it's possible, you just need to open the file previously at home or at the office and then you go to the pub or beach bar and work from there.

    • @AJSmart

    • @Gamefriar
      @Gamefriar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nop, that's one of the things I like about Figma the overall performance, but just to be clear I have 16 GB of RAM and I use mainly the Desktop App, don't know if it helps, but probably, since web browsers tend to use a lot of RAM.

    Zeplin = Can't seem to export import work to see css due to corporate firewall? Tech support poor? NEXT..
    Adobe XD = I can't see the css? NEXT..
    FIGMA = Web-based, FREE, CSS tab to view styles, effortless SVG and Raster image importation... Ding! Ding! Ding! We've found a winner.

      Adobe XD now has Share for Development window when publishing design specs. You can see all the CSS as well as assets. And with the latest update, you can now collaborate on designs with multiple designers. I was an avid Sketch user, but Adobe has really pulled out all stops (or SLAPS) LOL :-P

    9:15 You glossed over the one feature here that made me fall in love with FIGMA. That little greyed out button just under 'CODE'. It generates the suggested CSS code that either I or a developer can just copy and paste into the final style sheet. So much QA time saved between the developer and designer or individuals performing both roles.

Since both of these sites have free accounts, I am about to sign up and just play around with the site so that I can get used to it. I have tried Sketch once before at the same time Adobe was launching XD and a week later i've switched. At first XD was a little stressfull given the lack of features that were essential, but the adobe team was really dedicated and I keep on using. Now I feel that the XD is a really powerfull tool, even more because of the constant updates. Just like figma and sketch, the prototype tool isn't good for production (yet) but i believe that in the future whoever perfect this feature will win our hearts.

Figma is so fast and the quality and speed of the updates tell me it’s getting better quicker. BTW you guys never mentioned crashing. Sketch has serious issues with bugs and always has done - figma never crashes ... ever. That alone is enough for me.

    Old school designer here. I came from the Photoshop era, transitioned to Sketch, and now to Figma. Transition has been seamless, and I often forget that I'm in Figma rather than Sketch. Figma is a massive time saver as I'm able to combine several work flows together; wireframing, prototypes, high fidelity concepts and then having a showcase platform with the client. It stays simple in terms of plugins, don't knock Figma for not having plugins, it's often a bad thing if you need additional add-ons to do something simple and to manage all that on a daily basis. Figma has all the necessary tools to get started, and without the need to save or manage your files, have it on the go with any of your computers and have the collaborative features. It's amazing!

    Any software that doesn't have multiplattform support is going to struggle when the competitors all have it. Both XD, Studio, Figma, Axure are all available on both Windows and Mac. What I love about XD is it's tight integration with Adobes vast ecosystem. To be able to work seamless with both vector and bitmap graphics and edit stuff on the fly in PS and Illu is a great advantage when working in XD. I use the CC library in XD, PS, Illu and ID. Now that they have sorted out live collaboration as well XD is strong.

    Figma has better performance, Firma allows to turn on/off outlines, Figma has buggy iOS client. Figma has autolayout that works perfectly for typography layout. Sketch has slow performance, but good iOS client, that works. Sketch has a better nesting components system. Sketch doesn't have an outline mode.

    • @heyvasil
      @heyvasil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, I do.
      And in terms of the future of designing UI ... yes InVision Studio is exiting as a next step. But I believe designing UI should be in the native language/platform that is going to be used. For example if it's for the web we need a design friendly tool similar to the Webflow editor. This will eliminate the problems with handoff and prototyping even wireframing and will speed the process. And there will be no more design made in Sketch that can't quite translate to code :)

    I'm currently using Sketch and Craft+InVision as my go to setup for practically every project, I think it's solid and developpers are getting used to it, not to talk about how handy plugins are.
    I see your point on performance and real time collaboration and I'm going to try Figma for sure but the thing I see in the market right now is that the majority of designers use Sketch and even companies have made the effort to switch their libraries to Sketch so a lot of times you get imposed on the deliverables format they want. How do you deal with that if that's something that has even happenned to you?
    And what tool are you using for prototyping then?
    ¡Thank you for sharing your experience!

Figma was a potential candidate for our company to switch to, we picked it up super quick and love the UI. But then we discovered it doesn't handle component multi-states at all. Does anyone else have an issue with this? Kind of important when creating a design system and product.

    One feature i really like about Sketch is the symbols setup. When you create a symbol in sketch out of mulitple other symbols and text you can create one list element symbol for example and when using it in your design you can change the icon and edit the text without editing the master symbol. This makes it easy to create one component instead of multiple components. I have not found out how to do that in Figma, does anyone know if it is possible?

    I get that as a standalone app Figma will have more features than Sketch. But that's the deal. At least for me, sketch is not meant to be used as standalone but rather take advantage of the plug-ins you can add.
    For example, using sketch + craft enables real-time collaboration and comments through invision as well as library system for components and other automatization possibilities. And Invision's Inspect solves all of our asset handover requirements. If you add Anima to sketch you can now export HTML as well as create animations in sketch and export code. You can sync up sketch with tools like Principle to quickly show how some transitions and animations should work.
    If you add all you can do with sketch + plugins vs figma, sketch wins over by far.

    Sketch still performs better than Figma, in my experience. Figma opens up large files for an eternity and it keeps lagging, while Sketch works flawlessly. One more thing that puts me off Figma is how hard it is for icons to be exported from it and handed off to developers. I usually have to redo them in Sketch, at least most of them (some magically work), but it's twice the work. And it shouldn't be.

    • @AJSmart
      @AJSmart  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting take, Sketch seems to be popular as it's more desktop than browser based and so less reliant on net connections too. Thanks for taking the time to comment, great points!

    For me sketch is still the king--
    - Invision + sketch is one thing I'm sold on.
    - Principle + sketch integration is one of the best thing.
    - Plugins like craft are time saver.
    - You can make library in sketch too.
    - Plant + sketch for collaboration and version management.
    - Zeplin + sketch integration is a breeze. No need for built in exporter.

    Cloud base > any other shitty thing. Sketch is way more powerful performance and plugin wise. But having an online, versatile, cross browser software that even allows you to work with a team and collaborate within that team, and gives you the chance to share your canvas in view only and view and edit mode, is way bigger and game changer. It simplifies everything about a workflow. We'll see where each software go!
