    Nunez is beautiful, regal and elegant, whereas Osipova is seductive, bold and proud. Both are amazing dancers with impeccable techniques, but when I watch Nunez's version, I see Nunez with her usual skills and admire her gracefulness and control. But when I watch Osipova's version, I see Odile and I'm completely enthralled in the story. That's why with them side by side my eyes keep going to Osipova. She's just so captivating! She makes Odile come to life

    Totally adore both dancers! These performances are a perfect representation of the differences between the pure, clean RAD style and the dramatic, powerful Bolshoi style of ballet. Neither is better than the other, they’re just different approaches. If you truly love this art form, you should at least be able to get something out of both. It’s just what you prefer and it how affects you personally.
    Marianela’s is so beautiful, so clean. I think it suffers somewhat from being taken out of context from her white swan, her performance of which is an absolute beacon of classical purity. So it makes sense that her Odile is more restrained; no, Siegfried is not a smart character, but is he really going to believe that his angelic Odette has suddenly become a completely unrestrained wild thing, especially after her behaviour and hesitance only moments ago by the lake? No, it wouldn’t make sense with Marianela’s portrayal of Odette.
    I concede that Nunez’s interpretation is subtler than Osipova’s and I guess I could see how someone could find it boring - but for me, it’s regal, controlled, seductive, intensely musical. In the context of all 4 acts, I think it works spectacularly.
    Side note: I find that it’s easy for Odile performances to become cliché, relying on an excess of smirking, back-crunching arabesques & extensions, dead flicked wrists… the list goes on. It’s not bad per-se, it’s just the obvious interpretation, a little overdone by now.
    Anyways, onto Natalia. I’m not even an Osipova superfan so believe me when I say that tbh, she manages to transcend ballet. Once in a generation type thing. She absolutely comes alive onstage and becomes pure total dance energy, giving all of herself. No the technique isn’t neat and tidy, but it’s always raw and powerful.
    Yeah, some of the Odile cliches are present and I suppose the technique could be more correct in places… but I don’t care! I look past the technique because she makes me forget about it. She becomes the character! In that moment, Osipova IS the black swan and I completely surrender to the story being told. I really recommend seeing her perform in the flesh if you can.

      Hello, I'm new to watching these ballet vids and was wondering how to tell apart clean technique frod bad/mediocre?

    • @eg5660
      @eg5660 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@thedankengine585 Welcome to the world of ballet! I think learning the good from the bad is something that’ll just come with time and the more you watch. I feel like no one talks about how in high-level professional ballet, there’s rarely outright terrible technique. It’s rather that it’s an art form where the demands are so high and people are looking for perfection, so keep that mind.
      To develop an eye for technique, I recommend watching videos of rehearsals and classes, learning the names of some of the steps, watching students and videos of dancers at various stages of their careers, as well as different dancers performing the same piece.
      Looking at pre-1990s performances is also a particularly good way to start ‘seeing’ ballet I think, as the best dancers from history were still clean, had solid placement, musicality, etc, but not the dazzling (and sometimes distracting) flexibility and turnout of today.
      Some basic stuff to look out for: turned out legs and feet, straight knees, non-tilted hips, precise footwork, balance, stability, is it done in time with the music? Is there enough clarity between each move so the steps aren’t rushed and blurring into each other? I’d say get familiar with the basic 5 positions of ballet and look out for them in choreography, e.g do arms get sloppy in turns or jumps, are the feet and legs able to maintain turnout in fifth?

    Nunez is divine here: a technical master, wonderful musicality. When I watch her dance I think,"What a pleasure to enjoy the art of such an exceptional dancer". Osipova is Odile. Watching her dance this role, I forget that I'm watching Natalia Osipova dance, I only see the character. For me, that tips the scale in her favor. I prefer Osipova's interpretation of Odile.

  • @insaelliott9464
    @insaelliott9464 2 ปีที่แล้ว +113

    They are both so wonderful! I think whoever resonates with you the most depends on your vision of Odile. Osipova clearly has a young "Mean Girl" vibe, overtly flashy and malevolent...and there's nothing wrong with that! Nuñez is a more of a cool, calculating Mata Hari type seductress...she is in complete control and she knows it.

    Ah Osipova.. my heart. I believe she is the best dancer of our age. Her artistry and gestures and of course technique is impeccable. Her legs ,her arches and turns..I mean, always believe that she slowes the gravity with her jumps..runs...And the Odile representation of her, I believe the one of her best. She owns the character whatever she displays it. Ex: giselle,carmen, Don Quichotte etc. but this one is so special, when you look at her eyes and arms you get the part, the story,the feeling. She is like full-package. Sexiness, Soul, Purity, Fire..She is everything we are so lucky to have her.
    And Nunez! Of course she is too one the best dancers. I love her personality, and her technique is so so smooth she shows everything like it was easy. She is always so stable that; she has never second thoughts. She knows what's she been up to. Amazing control, amazing pointe work of her.
    She always behaves like she has a lot of to show us to do. always like, "oh wait, I need to say with my eyes, my glances..my smile..my still-standing / never stumbled feet."
    I love you ladies. You both amazing at your individual ways.
    🌟

    Осипова точно понимает о чем танцует. Движения её Одилии такие мягкие по кошачьи, такие соблазнительные,очень чувствуется в ней женская сила. Наташа в роли Одилии такая манкая, чувственная, Зигфрида можно понять.И в тоже время видно, что она играет с чувствами принца, его мужской слабостью.

    Agree that they're both magnificent but Natalia oozes evil like the black swan should.

    Осипова в этом видео однозначно прима, отточенные движения, уверенность и грация, настоящая Одиллия), танцовщице слева - не хватает внутреннего огня для передачи такого взрывного темперамента)

    I'm a big fan of both! Different aproach to the piece, but neither of them is superior or inferior. I respect and admire really much their work and artistry.
