i honestly think this would completely save the scene and allow it to grow while they work on a sequel
but if i understand it correctly, adding rollback is no small expense and would take a ton of time and QA that i doubt cygames wants anything to do with after the game flopped so incredibly hard. theyre a gambling game studio interested in relatively short gains so it's hard to see them fronting all that expense both to fix the existing game and fund a new one
they could, theyre rich as fuck from exploiting gamblers, but would they? eh

To be honest, ArcSys popping out games like crazy, at this point their main competition is their own games. Capcom was in that situation ones too. I hope they will support Strive for long, I don't want to switch yet.

IDK, I don't really feel like fighting games have direct competition like that. Most everyone I know in the FGC gets whatever game that comes out as long as the consensus isn't that it's terrible or if it's the newest in a series. Buy a game at launch, try out its mechanics, decide if you want to build a home or not, repeat at new release.
Like, SO many people bought Strive and Melty back to back, probably bought NASB, and then are going to pick up KOFXV without batting an eye. Just like a lot of people who bought those games are gonna come back to BBCF or pick it up for the first time bc of the Rollback patch.

The other thing that keeps the game alive is that Granblue Fantasy is a huge IP in Japan, and still recognizable worldwide in the anime community. It still has a chance to return in full force once everything opens up again, but it'll be tough going up against newer releases that will try to take the same spotlight.
But there's been stories of older FGs coming back (MvC2/MvC3, Melty Blood Actress Again, Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax, etc) so GBVS can easily be one of those. GBVS is a game I wanted to get into (because I play the original browser game) but the online did take away my motivation to play. I want this to come back though.

As someone who's been playing the Granblue mobile game casually since 2016, I was super hyped about this and even got to participate in the network tests before its release. It's super unfortunate how world events caused GBFVS to somewhat fade into obscurity. I absolutely love Granblue's characters and lore and GBFVS seemed to be poised to introduce the Granblue universe to a wider audience. I'm not much of a fighting game player myself because of RSI that I've been dealing with since 2012 from playing tons of FPS games, but I can't help but cheer on FGC players from the sidelines. Here's to hoping that we may someday see a sequel to GBFVS somewhere in the future, or possibly rollback in the current game.

Either they could add rollback or if that's too difficult start a sequel and build the new game with rollback. I'm guessing it'll be the latter, but I don't see any reason for the game to die out completely. I am hoping the same thing happens for Samurai Shodown as well and I am guessing it will also be a sequel that has rollback since building it in place from the start is much more doable than reworking an existing game.

I love GBVS. Played it for a long time it's one of my favorite fighting games.
There was a confluence of factors that tanked it.
First up, the release schedule: Launching first in Japan, then a month later in the US, then another month later in the EU (the first DLC characters were out before the game even released in EU) was not a good decision, especially for a fighting game where everyone should start on even grounds.
Then, of course Covid and the games' netcode - I personally never had much of a problem with online matches but it was obviously a big problem for a lot of other people.
Finally, the pricing is a factor that should not be underestimated. It is a full price title with a small roster and it rarely goes on sale and has 2 expensive season passes which also rarely go on sale plus additional paid stage dlc and battle passes on top of that. Cygames is just asking too much for what they are offering.
I'm happy the community is still soldiering on, though. Game is great and it's nice to see it doing well at CEO.

    • @janusan89

I definitely get the sale part: I REALLY want to give it a shot, I do, but I'm more of a casual player and while I would love to play, I can't see myself spending 60 bucks on a game that I might not play much + more on dlc that I might never use.
If they had a good sale for both base game and total dlc, I would totally try it, but I'm jut too scared to get into a game as someone who just plays them casually.

Fighting games are easy to get into as long as the game has a good tutorial - such as almost every arcsystem fighting game - and you're willing to accept you will most likely be bad when you start. A game should never cater to new players as it takes away the fun from the existing player base (like what Strive did by killing what make Guilty Gear fun). You need to have a game that you can pick up and learn whilst also having a high skill ceiling - Guilty Gear Xrd, Under Night in Birth and Blazblue Central Fiction all fit this very well yet people don't play these games due to lack of promotion and no rollback netcode,

I remember hearing about this game when it was first revealed because of how nice the game looked and because it was an Arc Systems game, but I almost heard nothing after the release. It's unfortunate why it lost a lot of its playerbase, it seemed like it could've been a cool game with a hopefully good competitive scene. Hopefully they do a big sale for the game at one point and implement rollback netcode

    • @tbc1880
      @tbc1880 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Side note. Arcsys fighting games look nice but at this point they all look the same. Like... I saw one of the dfo characters and it took me a moment to realize it wasn't a new GG character because of how GG characters are designed. The style imo works for DragonBall because it's basically the same thing we've seen since raging blast. But granblue? Even GG? There's a lot of good artstyles used. 3d rendering and animation is nice but at this point there isn't much stylization it's the FGC equivalent of the super realistic Ubisoft-EA-Activision-etc. game. It's only one publisher, but it's all blending together and only the designs of the characters keep them different not the artstyle of the game itself. Like imagine if GG strive went more like how the art in accent core went. Or granblue with some of the older more stylized art that isn't so close to the vast majority of the anime ascetic today as the newer art is. Heck even looking more like that would be nice. Even DFO probably could benefit though I don't play or know it so it's what it is.
Though of course they won't since this is their pump out fgs for IP engine. Similar to how a lot of JRPGs today look the same it's just stale but if it's fast and works just use character design and some drawn art here and there in the game to put the style the in game graphics lack in. But I dunno just an issue I see in the games industry in general. Maybe I'm just more keen seeing the halo war over art style.

What especially surprised me was that the game's singleplayer is actually decent, which is almost unheard of among fighting games.

Granblue has definitely been one of my favorite fighting games in a good while. Loved playing Lowain to death despite his shortcomings early on, and the pace of fights were great. Having meterless EX moves with the only downside being the move was on CD for some time meant a meter hoarder like me had an excuse to just do cool EX moves in combos and not have to worry about meter management and giving up doing supers just to do a combo. It's a real shame the online era had to put granblue to the test, and I'll definitely be checking back in once Vira drops, but man it really does suck that GBVS had to be the poster child of "no rollback no buy" for a good while.

Pretty much. This isn't a game that never got that much traction mainly due to circumstances and luck getting on it's way at every chance, I'd say the biggest factor that made it lose a lot of ground quickly were the lack of content on release, rarely going on sale while keeping a high cost despite how many months have passed since it's release, the many questionable balance patches and the hopelessly outdated netcode, all of which are the game's fault.
