Love this game. Been playing for over a year with friends and having a blast. So much to discover and the gameplay is great. Just remember to read the rules multiple times. Easy to miss stuff and are mistakes.

Yep, absolutely. Just like D&D mistakes can lead to great gaming moments. Few things to remember is that on Monster turn always find their focus before resolving their ability. Sometimes their focus will require them to make a sub optimal move. Invisible characters in doorways will also often prevent melee monsters from finding a focus forcing them to skip their turn.

Thanks for that revealing. Mine came in the mail recently and I too am super excited to see it all in “real life”. After watching your video I believe I will now decide which organizer to buy for it before I even open it! This is surely Isaac Childres’ watershed moment. I’ll bet nothing he designs before or after this will overshadow this amazing game! A footnote: we are renovating a few rooms in our house so I will have nowhere to lay this out for three months! Can I hold out?? Yikes...

Biggest tips I will give you is really understand the rules before playing. Most people make lots of rule mistake in the beginning(me included).
And another thing. Since you like fantasy. NOTHING in this game can be played as a tank. Some might be able to take 2-3 hits more but if you ever try to tank you WILL die. Its much more about avoiding taking damage at all. I thought my Brute would be able to tank and I was kinda disappointed before I started understanding how your suppose to do it.

@@RogueWatson Getting to the last room on your first try is actually better them most from what read on forum and my own experience. Haha
As far as I know there are no rules that say traps stops movement. :-)

It's pretty damn intimidating. I'd like to hold out off on unboxing until I get the inserts from Broken Token, but it hasn't even shipped yet and I'm in New Zealand, so I'm probably looking at a couple of weeks. Willpower, dammit, willpower!

I still need to pick up JotL! We finally finished GH after about 2 years and 80-some plays, phenomenal! Not so much a fan of the Forgotten Circles expansion, however.

@@RogueWatson Now that I'm more acquainted with the rules about 2.5 hours per scenario. It was quite a bit more to start with - you'll probably find you need to check rules quite a bit to begin with, regardign abilities and especially monster movement and focus. Pretty much everything I had a question about though, there was already a thread for on BGG or reddit - google is your friend! :)
Also I highly recommend an app called 'gloomhaven helper'. I didn't want to use it to being with, as I wanted to use everything in the box that I'd paid for. But in the end it means a lot fewer cards to deal with on the table, especially if you end up with 3 or more monster types at the same time. It deals with monster stat cards (the square ones) status effects, the monster attack modifier deck, and their ability decks, including shuffling them when needed. It also keeps track of summons, your health amd experience (so you don;t need the red and blue counters) along with the initiative order for each round. It's really quite....helpful.
Also, one thing I would say, that a lot of people (including me) don't realise at first - the attack modifier cards in the tuck box (the small cards ) aren't used to begin with. they are upgrades that each character earns whilst playing, and they are different for each character, but to being with you just use the basic deck.

I think i had played 5 or 6 scenaarios before I caved in and started using the app. :)
Funny that you mention Mage knight. I bought the ultimate edition around the same time as gloomhaven, but only played the walkthrough once before gloomhaven arrived. I got addicted to gloomhaven, and haven't opened mage knight since. However, I have been reading through the walkthrough again this afternoon, and plan to play that this evening again, it's time that got a serious outing. I have a set of cards and map tiles on the desk as I'm typing this, hehe.

Haha, yeah, that's quite a commitment! I have space to leave things in place though if necessary, so I can leave it and come back the next day if necessary

Just found out about this game a few days ago. It looks cool and heavy. I made a search on Roll20 forum and found someone is actually uploading assets. Any plans to do a stream of playing the actual boardgame?

@@RogueWatson After your unboxing, I went to find anything else about Gloomhave. There appears to be a Gloomhave computer game coming to Steam sometime soon. But it appears to be a single-player game so not sure how close to the boardgame it will be.

    • @lergof0202

It’s supposed to be a single payer version of the campaign with a rougelike mode as well. Likely for people who don’t have a group who can meet frequently. I’d absolutely recommend this game. It doesn’t quite scratch the D&D itch, but it’s damn close sometimes and doesn’t require a DM which is good for when the DM just needs a break or hasn’t had time to prep a session.

Cheeky tip, you can get Gloomhaven for £9.99.
Go onto steam and look for tabletop simulator, look at the workshop at all the additional games people have added - you will find Gloomhaven.
All you need is tabletop simulator, it has literally everything you need, rule book, minis, cards, maps and stickers.. and best of all you can play online instead of getting the boys round.
    no mess!
Don’t believe me, TH-cam it or do ya homework I don’t care I’m just helping out 🤷‍♂️

That looks awesome. I don't know if you've ever played any of the Pathfinder card game scenarios which are based off of Paizo Pathfinder games (which you don't have to be familiar with to enjoy). But it is the closest that I've seen to a D&D style of experience in a card game and is worth checking out IMHO.

@@RogueWatson I know theres app/PC game on steam that is based on the rise of the runelords campaign. Although the card version has about four or five campaigns worth at this point.
One plus from me, is that it's easy to setup a game with one or more players on a scenario. Each scenario can take roughly an hour. So its easy to setup and just play.
My con. There just is not a lot of replay value. Imho. I'm taking about the pathfinder card game, not Gloomhaven. Gloomhaven is freaking awesome.
