100% agree with learning the FEEL of fabric fiber types. I scored 15yds of silk for $10 just by running my hand down a rack of thriftstore curtains, and finding the one set that wasn't polyester.
ok, i came to your channel because you had posted a sew along video for the simplicity chemise that i was attempting to make and you inspired me to use a target bedsheet for my first try. I've come back to your channel several times because I feel like you have such an admirable approach to historical costuming and I fall in the same category that you do (as in cosplaying an 18th century court lady at versailles vs. historical accuracy). I have since adopted your "done is better than perfect!" approach and it just has been so dang liberating. I just learned how to sew for the first time this summer and your videos have given me the confidence to move forward to my historical costuming dreams. Also watching your passion translate on screen is incredible. Alls this to say is THANK YOU for the videos and the constant inspiration. And THANK YOU for making historical costuming an accessible place to be for all. You are a dang gem!
That's the hardest part if you're not near thrift stores! I did find a second hand fabric shop that sells online for reduced prices. It's not as cheap as a thrift store but less expensive than Joann: www.swansonsfabrics.com/shop
Hi Hanna, have you tried eBay? Sometimes you can pick up some pretty decent bedsheets for not to much. Or job lots, dead stock, or even craft room clearouts.
www.shopgoodwill.com/ does auctions on fabric lots. Maybe try searching for cotton fabric there. Content is a bit hit and miss as there's a ton of polyester, but if that's not a big deal to you, it can be a great option. Do pay attention to the shipping part because it seems to be inconsistent. If the store that's shipping it chooses a more expensive flat rate, it can really add up, for example.
Oh and I haven't tried this yet, but someone suggested buying new sheets from discount or overstock stores like TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less or Marshalls. Clearance sales at dept stores might work too. And people talk about Ikea sheets/curtains a lot.
What a really inspiring video Kate! And congratulations on getting over 1000 subscribers!!! I'm always trying to encourage my students (when I was teaching in person) to use fabrics they hadn't considered and I try and do the same on my TH-cam channel.
Fantastic job! It was very comprehensive and interesting to see how you put your slant on everything. I have been following you for a while and with each video I am more impressed. I wish I had half your skill and energetic, positive attitude. Thank you for making these videos
Oh my goodness, you're so kind! Thank you. 😊 It's certainly been a masterclass on not being to hard on myself (even though I really want to sometimes). I hope this helps other people too.
My pleasure, Ashley! Good luck on your project! Sometimes you have to take a little break before diving back in. I just spent two weeks avoiding some sleeves that only took me an hour to finish in the end. 😅

I love your attitude towards historical sewing! It makes the space feel so much more welcoming and less stressful
Thanks, Amanda! I'm so glad it took some pressure off. It can be so intimidating, but it's such a fun hobby filled with really cool people.
Omg. The chewy paper! I never thought of that!
Awesome video! Gumption is the tricky part.

Excellent ideas!
Thanks for the shout-out! ❤️
I love these tips especially because we costume for our whole family. It gets pricey 😅
Being a royal family ain't easy😉
So glad you liked it! Also congrats on getting to 1k!!!! You are absolutely killing it and I'm living for all your Tudor/historybounding looks.
@@katencat thank you!
We have some really fun projects were working on and I can't wait to share them!
Does anybody have tips for buying things and obtaining things without a car?
Thank you for lovely words and getting me wanted to start sewing again 💖🥰
That's amazing! I hope you do get back into it💖
I don't have any thrift stores in my area or house item sales (?) so I'm just buying expensive cotton 😭😭

Thanks, so much Eleanor! That's such a great thing to show your students (and subscribers). You can get so creative with sewing & fabric.

@@katencat Congrats on pulling through though and finishing those sleeves!!
Yay! You can do it!
I will be so happy to get my 2nd shot and then go thrifting again! Great tips, thanks!
Yay, that's awesome! Hope you find some gems when you go thrifting. I'm getting my first shot soon.
@@katencat That's great!
I know this is all very sudden, but I'm in love with you 💕😸
Haha, thank you! 😻
