Rowan Atkinson is a treasure. Keeping the straight face while pronouncing all the names AND making silly jokes with them is just golden to watch. Very happy you got to see this stand-up.

I know Rowan Atkinson is known worldwide for Mr Bean thanks to be ease at which his almost silent character's comedy being easy to sell to non-English speaking countries but to me he will always be Blackadder.

Try reading "The Meaning of Lif" by John Lloyd and Douglas Adams. It takes Town names and produces a new definition which seems to fit the word suitably. For instance, Adlestrop is a village in Gloucestershire. According to Lloyd and Adams, it is also the part of a suitcase specifically designed to get jammed in luggage carousels at airports. And a Budby (Nottinghamshire) is a nipple clearly defined through flimsy or wet clothes. Forsinain (Scotland) is the right of the lord of the manor to molest dwarves on his birthday.
I try to imagine just how drunk they were when they wrote it.

  • @caphowdy666

When I was a kid at school we had a teacher called Mr Head. Kids did not use teachers first names, and did not even know most of them but occasionally you would catch the teachers talking to each other and they would use first names.
Turns out Mr Heads first name was Richard.
Can you imagine how quick that went round the school and how the kids would take the piss?
    Poor bloke.
BTW, while Mr Bean is probably Atkinsons most famous character worldwide, I will hand on heart say that his best work is most defo Blackadder for me, and many others.

Rowan first came to the public attention in a topical sketch show called "Not the Nine O'Clock News" in the 1980s. Because it was topical a lot of the sketches have dated and/or have references you might not get, but quite a lot of them are hilarious and timeless.

As far as chlamydia…. I worked in healthcare IT working with a team to improve testing for medical conditions. Some of these were automated lab tests for things, blood panels for those patients who require ongoing monitoring, annual colon cancer testing, etc. One of these we was chlamydia. The lead doctor was a proponent of testing all patients, as chlamydia often shows few symptoms. By testing and treating those who have it, the patient’s health improves, and does not infect others. At one meeting the doctor said “I want to give everyone chlamydia {testing}”. We all laughed 😂

  • @friendlyneighbourhoodsteve4087
    @friendlyneighbourhoodsteve4087 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think what is clever about this is that typically, with a joke, you have the setup, which isn't really funny, but necessary to make the punchline funny. With this little skit, the setup is funny too, or at least a bit humorous, depending on ones sense of humour, of course. Quite a rare thing I think.
As far as names go, there was a kid in my primary school named David forth. Now obviously there's nothing remarkable about that. But he had a younger sister named Sally. At that young age I didn't think anything of it, but then later in life, I heard the idiom, to Sally forth, which is like an old English way of saying to leave enthusiastically to do something dangerous. ie a general may spur his troops on shouting "Sally forth men!" Nothing rude about it, but it does tickle me. There was actually a comic strip called Sally Forth in, I think the early 1900s. So I guess someone then thought it was a humorous name too.
I did have a music teacher in high school who was really awesome and looked exactly like John Lennon. He was really popular with the music kids, which was lucky for him because his name was Richard Satchel, which if you're me, your mind just goes straight to Dick Sack.
    He was very cool though.
Well, I'm off to try to figure out how to be a rainbow, as per your rather strange suggestion. Not sure where to start with that though. Maybe I'll try the puppy, might be a bit easier 🤷‍♂️

To get the most out of this, you really need to have been brought up in an old-fashioned UK school system. I grew up in such a system, although a bit removed out here in the colonies, but still with enough to know of which this sketch speaks. Also, my mum was a school teacher from this system.
At the begining of the school day the teacher would pronounce the students' names and they were expected to answer of course. Rowan here is playing on the sort of supersillious (spelling) school teachers of a former era.

TL;DR: This comment is about me pointing out how I won't waste your time by talking about various things.
.. I will NOT let you partake in my overthinking and the various studies I have seen where people try to find reasons for words being what they are.. . ~I~ may overthink things, but I won't share it with you. I ALSO won't waste your time talking about how SOME words actually.. originated as actual names but BECAUSE someone chose to use that name in some specific framing (like naming a disease after it) people stopped using the name.. (I also won't mention the opposite where people made up a name for something on more or less reasonable associations, like the word "mongoloid" versus the actual ethnicity of being mongol), where the actual name WON (for once) so it is the medical terminology that had to change.. I won't point out that anaesthesia as a name came to existence because of a woman who literally LOVED how much anaesthesia was such a relief during childbirth that she named her child after it.. I won't mention that Chlamydia really would mean "small cloak" (and that in itself WOULD look/sound like somethng you could've expected as a reasonable meaning of a name, so it still makes sense.. ).. nor compare it to my name which originally meant "honourable with a spear" or "famous with a spear", NOR debate how this suddenly could end up meaning.. "I hear you", NOR how it ended up a noun for a good "shag" (nor will I discuss why the bird "shag" suddenly was an euphemism for some SERIOUSLY active... )..
I also won'd discuss how the most basic words (Mother and father- as used by babies or in baby-talk by adults) ALWAYS use soft consonants (MMmmm, nnnn)... and head-movements, body language or other gestures that are kind of associated with "Here" for mother, and hard abrupt consonants (B, D, P) or gestures that implies distance for father.. I ESPECIALLY won't share that I personally started to think.. "well.. is there something that FEELS more right IF we say that the word for mother and father ARE the words [here] and [there]? IF those would be the words WHICH word would we think means what????""..
And so on.. What I WILL say is that I DO have a difficult time understanding why people DON'T overthink these things the same way as I do.
I have REASONS to think that you shouldn't (My psychosocial burnouts, my depressions, etc, are PROBABLY a result of my overthinking), so this is NOT a suggestion at all.
.. but.. I also seriously can't understand (for the life of me).. why people DON'T repeatedly find themselves in the rabbit-hole of googling etymology of words and then trying to dig deeper...
What I WILL point out is that.. I just like the concept. .and.. it wakes my curiosity., and I think more people should (at least once in their life).. EXPLORE that rabbit-hole BEYOND just laughing at a random meme.

The idea of the rollcall of stupid names is clever, but I don't find this version as funny as the original one he did for a comedy show called The Secret Policeman's Ball, where he didn't use any many obvious rude words.
It was funnier because it was less blatant. Most of the names he used in the other version were more silly, with just the occasional rude one (which made them stand out more - ooer missus!) The humour was more down to the way Atkinson pronounced and emphasised each name.
If you search YT for "Secret Policeman's Ball: Rowan Atkinson 'Headmaster'" you'll find it.

Forgot your medicine today, Mandy? 😀 So after called 'butt' for 20 years, at least he is now a 'fancy butt' I like wordgames in politics, there is a lot of puns anyway in British comedy, and if it is too obvious, comedians really gonna hear it from their colleagues
