Rowan Atkinson first did this sketch decades ago. One reason the opening applause was so enthusiastic was that, as soon as the audience saw the set, most of them knew exactly what was coming.

A lot of the jokes in there weren't particularly new, when he first performed it in the 1980s, but Rowan Atkinson is very good at tieing them all together and has excellent delivery. His portrayal of Toby as some sort of ghastly package holiday courier is very well played.
This is so good. He also does a school assembly call sketch which is even funnier. I had to giggle about the small guillotine joke for the fornicators not getting a reaction from you at all.
Rowan Atkinson is one of our comedians who were essentially public (i.e. private) school, Oxbridge (Oxford/ Cambridge) educated comedians who rose to prominence in the 60's and after with the devlopment of satire and then more 'alternative' forms of comedy. Witty and informed, they were once criticised by one of our more traditional comedians as 'now you need a degree to be filthy'. Hey JPS, I made a recommendation previously for Blackadder and I’ll reiterate it again - specifically Blackadder II - Beer (episode 5) if you want something of a humorous religious nature, it stars Rowan Atkinson and is generally part of a quite iconic British series!
I’ve just told JPS that Mr Bean is Rowan Atkinson’s funniest character, but then you mention Blackadder and of course, you’re right. The man is an utter genius.
+1 for Blackadder, but IMHO only worth bothering with Blackadder II and Blackadder Goes Forth; the last episode of the latter hit everyone pretty hard tho, very poignant. Great TV.
This sketch first started when i was about your age (i'm 58 now) and it gets changed to reflect the social changes in life (it was bank managers not lawyers etc) - absolutely brilliant
Anything that knocks at religion is a good thing in my book. Have a look at George Carlin’s view on religion it is hilarious and true! Rowan Atkinson is a master of comedy.
Very good. Rowan Atkinson is so funny. I saw his show back in the late 1980s and then spent a day with him whilst we test drove the latest Bentley and Rolls-Royce motorcars (he does like cars).
I’m coming to hell with you as life of Brian is one of my all time favourite films lol, Rowan Atkinson s blackadder is a must watch, especially goes forth which is set in the trenches of ww1, enjoy
Great reaction from you JP; you had me when he said "... and the Americans😮 ..." Rowan Atkinson is not only very clever, but he's so funny. He's done so much - his part in the London Olympic Games 2012 was funny.
Fun stuff! The video of the older 1980s version is floating around on youtube too (no Americans but the Germans are with the French). You'll love 'School Days' from the same show (Boston USA if memory is correct). :)
Because there was Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwell, it means it was Royal Variety Performance. It takes place yearly in November. I read it is a charitable performance where profits go to the Royal Variety Charity which Queen is a patron of. The first RVP took place in 1912. There wasn't any during the wars obviously or in 2020. Britain Got Talent winner takes part in it. It is an honour to take part.
If you can find them sketches (skits) of Rowan Atkinson playing an imaginary piano, and another of him conducting an orchestra. Possibly found as part of Secret Policeman's Ball/Other Ball series for Amnesty international. Hilarious. Oh and now atheist, but brought up evangelical. Absolutely love Life of Brian, so guess I'm headed for hell haha.
Great reaction to a great sketch. I hadn't seen this version before, only the classic 80s version, which is the same as this other than hedgefund managers and Trump. His one man show from the eighties was full of these sketches, he doesn't do stand up, he doesn't interact, he is a comedy actor, rather than a comedian, every word is carefully worked out, how to say it, and time it.Though he did mess up the little guillotine joke , compared to the original. I would recommend his "drunks in an Indian restaurant" and " Fatal Beating"
there are a few other bits changed, in the original the Fornicators bit he only asks for the Men to line up, the Life of Brian and the Americans section are new as well
I absolutely LOVE how you react, hahaha. Rowan Atkinson has been entertaining us for decades, starring in everything from 'Not the Nine O'Clock News', (early on in his career), 'Blackadder' ( a personal favourite), Mr. Bean, of course, and the (mediocre) 'Johnny English' the hapless spy. He is up there with Stephen Fry with his oratory skills. I was a committed Roman Catholic up until the age of 16 when I made the decision to quit religion, particularly the RC religion, when I realized for sure that I'm gay ... the Catholic church is pretty clear about its views on homosexuality. I don't mock those who remain faithful to God but I could never be part of an institution that shuns someone simply because of their sexuality. That said, I will not hold back the laughter when a skit like this comes along. Another great choice to react to, JP.
While it is fair to describe Johnny English as mediocre, turning a series of credit card adverts into a three film franchise is still quite an achievement.
This is an updated version of the same sketch that he wrote in the 90’s I think. Some of the audience knew the jokes, and were calling them out. It’s soooo funny.
