    This is nice when you're having extra company over and you need another table for a dinner.
    And then you could hang that on a wall in your garage or your shed until you need it again.

      Paint a nice design on it and simply hang it on the wall as an art piece. Remove it from the wall and use it as a table top when guests come over. Yes, I know, it’s a genius idea. 🤣

    I was taught in shop class (eons ago) to use 0000 steel wool to apply stain instead of a brush or a rag. That way all the stain goes into the wood, including the oil, instead of the rag soaking up the stain and oil. It also smooths the wool a bit more. Then use fresh 0000 steel wool to smooth the raised grain between coats.

    • @Resanctify
      @Resanctify ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Watch for oil on new steel wool as others have advised that the oil they use on steel wool causes black dots on Wood.
      Feel free to correct me if that was only with one wood or one brand of steel wool.

    Couple more things to add.
    Glue, it's "stronger" but only when applied properly. Thin coats on both pieces being glued, not a heavy coat on one side. This pushes the glue into the grain on both sides, and letting the glue surfaces meld with each other ensuring the strongest bond.
    Glue is sorta stronger as well. It is however, weaker to expansion stresses and shock forces. Over time glue will become brittle as well. Always best to use both screws/nails and glue.
    For the trim, you should attach a bit of fir strip along the end cut sides as nails and screws don't hold well into the end grain. Attach a fir strip along the edge, and attach the finish trim to that instead/as well for added robustness of the finish trim.
    I would also recommend getting countertop epoxy to help give the top some dent/gouge resistance. Even with poly, pine is soft, and will definitely start showing damage fast.
    Final thing. Save yourself that folding table and take a look online, like Etsy, and find some nice legs to put the table on. Willing to bet you can find some cheaper than the table your putting the table top on.
    Overall though, I do like a simple build though, especially one that I can reuse wood I already have for. And this did come out looking nice.

      Here’s a good way to train yourself to avoid filler words or phrases. Buy an electronic VIBRATION correcting dog collar with a remote for causing vibration. Best for beginners. Buying the electric shock correction collar will accelerate your training. Get results FAST!
      Grab an assistant such as wife, kid, or neighbor and give them the remote, with instructions for using it. If your assistant is an adult, have a couple beers or drinks. Oh yeah, have someone else take videos of your training. 👍🏻
      Turn on the device and fasten the collar around your neck, centering the vibration divise in the front of your neck. Begin your demonstration and speak smoothly and confidently. When you say 'uh' or 'er',stumble over your words, or say 'go ahead and…' your assistant will use the remote to cause the collar to vibrate. Repeat the process, increasing the strength of vibration as needed. Good luck and go ahead and have fun!!🤩😂😂😂😂🤣

    When wood filling nail holes on bare wood place a piece of painters tape BEFORE you nail it in each spot, nail thru the tape then fill and sand with the tape in place, final sand after you remove it, the tape keeps the fill off the bare wood where it will cause the stain to take different if it gets in the grain. Your welcome.

      I’m a beginner and this is a really helpful tip! I didn’t put much care in wiping away putty and glue on a recent project because I thought sanding would be sufficient. Well…it soaked into the wood and resulted in a splotchy stain in those areas. It was really disappointing, but a good lesson learned!
      I’ll use this tip for sure!

Basically did what he shows in the video, only with higher end wood, etc. Plus, we did a frame around the legs also... which helped provide support and made it look really professional. Lastly we paid a company to float a single piece of smoked glass on the top (after finishing the wood and stuff of course).

  • @lindaburnette2200
    @lindaburnette2200 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    My comment has to do with the size of the finishing nails. If your using 1x6 boards and your nails are only 1 1/4” long that means only a quarter inch is actually going into the table top which isn’t really enough to hold securely. I understand that you don’t want the nails poking through the top but you could use a 1 1/2” or even a 1 3/4” and the nails wouldn’t be long enough to protrude through the entire 2” of both boards put together. This is especially true since you plan on removing the top and folding the base when not in use. The more you move the top, the more chance of that slight 1/4” pull out.

    • @Elizabeth-rq1vi
      @Elizabeth-rq1vi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It also looks like he didn’t glue the long boards together, which means the cross boards are the only things holding it together & although glued across it there are too many weak spots. The edging won’t keep it together either.

    • @kennethbarber438
      @kennethbarber438 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the boards are 3/4" thick, so 1 1/4" nails penetrate at least 1/2". They just hold the boards until the glue dries.

      Kristine, Folding tables like this one have a couple of different locking mechanisms so using it with a wooden overlay wouldn’t be any different than using it the way you bought it. The overlay doesn’t change the safety of use in any way.

    The gunstock stain is blotchy. Longer smoother strokes with a brush are better, to avoid the obvious stop and start shifts in color and rub in later with the same long smooth strokes of your rag. The cracks between the boards will be bothersome as well; you might want to rip your boards first; or fill the cracks with matching sawdust and white glue mixed, before finishing.

      I don't have much experience woodworking, but watch lots of videos.
      I'm surprised that, on the long boards, you didn't joint the edges (there are videos about how to joint without a jointer), then glue them together, clamping along the long sides to eliminate gaps.

  • @senacht

    Nice look! But how much additional weight did the woodwork add? One reason for having a folding table is it’s easy to move and store. Extra weight doesn’t help with that.

    My hubby did the same thing to a large dog crate that we had in the house. We then could use it as a side table between the two couches.

    How do you keep it from tipping? Do you fasten it to the folding table?🤔

    How practical would it be to make a version of the folding table that still folds?

      You just lift the wood off and fold the table like usual
