Billy Joel is a great singer songwriter & composer from the 70's-90's. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. "Just The Way You Are" is from my favorite album "The Stranger". It has a lot of great songs such as "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "Only The Good Die Young", "She's Always A Woman" etc.
Just the Way You Are is most likely the most played wedding song ever. I mean, I wouldn't know that as a fact, but it would seem like it! Billy can do anything he wants -- now THAT is a fact! 😄 The Stranger is pretty much a perfect album and you'll get no complaints if you pick any track off of it. The title song is amazing in itself. But Scenes From an Italian Restaurant is the real gem, a personal favorite and a staple at Billy's concerts. Hope you can check that out, and get ready for some real storytelling and fabulous musicianship!
Love your reactions, especially to my favorite, Billy Joel. He wrote this for his first wife because he couldn’t afford a gift. When he sings it in concert now he humorously says “ and then we got divorced”. It won record and song of the year at the Grammys that year. This song only got on the album because the producer, Phoebe Snow and Linda Ronstadt convinced him. Billy thought it was too sappy.
When it comes to love songs, there is no such thing as 'too sappy.' There are bad songs, but they can be as sweet and syrupy as language and music can be.
@@thomasmacdiarmid8251 agreed. He and the band were just not looking for a ballad that they feared would be played at every wedding reception for the next decade. That’s exactly what they got though. I’m not sure what single came out first that really got The Stranger album listened to, but if it was Just The Way You Are it put Billy on the map in a big way.
@@jamishops Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) was the first single from The Stranger and then Just The Way You Are. The producer Phil Ramone in an interview had a little laugh to himself when the interviewer asked him was it true that Billy did not want to put Just The Way You Are on the album, because he said that Billy tends not to have a whole bunch of songs to choose from at any given time when making an album, so it was always likely to make it anyway because the songs that did are basically all he had, and Turnstiles, the album before only had four songs on each side and ran for around 36 minutes. Billy has probably embellished the story a little, although I do not doubt that the band probably did find Just The Way You Are a bit sappy or that Phoebe Snow and Linda Ronstadt liked the song.
HIS 100th sell out show at Madison Sqare Garden will televised in April. He had a 10 yr residency at MSG all sold out shows. He's ending it at 74 yrs old to move to FL. He is a legand. Top 10 all time best selling artists. 👌 You can go down a deep rabbit hole. River of Dreams has a gospel feel and is great. Captain Jack about a drug dealer that lived near him when he was broke. He released 1st new song in 30 yrs last month. Turn the Lights Back On.
Billy Joel simply cannot write a bad song. Michael, have you heard his new song Turn the Lights Back On? When you do, make sure you watch the official video. It is so wonderful!
When you say no one talks about it, it is because the people who do talk about it, are 20, 30, almost 40 years older than you. Keep in mind that is how old our songs are. Also, we are forgetting everything: why we watch you - to remember Lol.
You are the best reactor, and a life enhancer, I love your enthusiasm. With love from me in the middle of the South of England. If I lived any further south I would be living in the sea. x
Hey. Enjoy your reactions. I like all of Billy Joel’s older stuff from the 70s and 80s, but I also really liked “And So It Goes.” I think he wrote it early 80s but didn’t release it til 1989.
hi michael, hope you're good. billy joel, absolute magic. the man can sing anything. if he sung the phone book i'd listen, lol. scenes from an italian restaurant is my one of my favourite joel songs. great reaction michael. if you want another really nice song try, fool if you think it's over by chris rhea, great music, beautiful lyrics and a superb voice.

Speaking of his versatility, try "River of Dreams".

One of my faves as well
One of Billy's favorite songs that doesn't get as much attention is "And So It Goes". He said he likes the discordant notes in the song.
You should react to HONESTY next. Beautiful song.

Andy - I've loved Lionel's "Hello" since it came out... but Adele's "Hello" is even better.
He’s still touring. Great to see live?
