“Some organic is better than all organic” I like that and it’s what I was planning to do as I start my lawn renovation later this year. I like your channel, informative videos.
Been watching your videos for a year now and used some of your tips and advice. Just gotta say thank you, thank you, thank you . I have seen a huge improvement in my lawn. Living in MA with tons of pine needles has been like fighting a war.
I beg to differ with you. I was a die hard Scotts user for years. I bought Milorganite once on a whim. I happened to use it side by side with Scotts. I will never go back to Scotts. Using it now for over 15 years and very happy with it.
I also have had good results with Milorganite -- but will try Innova as well. I did use The Andersons HUMIC DG this year. 1 bag spring, 1mid summer. Thought it was helpful. Thanks again.
I like your varied approach. Grabbed a compost fork last week. Wasn't crazy about the designs available. Mainly one type made under several brands. The selection is what color you want. It works great for processed compost, still need the four tine for new material.
Thank you for the nice and informative videos you do. Short, professional, no empty taking. Best done! You have such a large backyard. When do you have time to take care such a large yard and keep it in such an excellent condition yourself? Great job by the way regarding your yard and the same quality videos!
Thanks for the video... I really like a lot of your reviews... I use Milorganite and just purchased a 50 pound bag for $19 at my local Ace Landscapers Supply store, better price than other stores. I am happy with the results and the price difference is high... the one you are recommending is $65 on Amazon... too much... Thanks for the info!
They are really about the same price because this product covers 11k sqft and Milo only 2.5k sqft, making Milo a bit more expensive. I use a hybrid fertilizer approach as well...Milo because it's easier to find, some cheap synthetic fertilizer in granulated form and spoon feed with liquid Fert plus iron and micros called Feature...works well.
I will use organic’s through our summer heatwave here in the Midwest , however I agree with you that synthetics give far superior results. Great video and explanation!
Thanks so much for the information, I am in the beginning of going organic. I have a large lawn about 3 acres. What do you thing about Alaska fish fertilizer 5-1-1 ? I have a 30 gallon tow behind sprayer that I can mix water soluble fertilizer. I love the idea of improving my soil over time. I also have pets that I am concerned about. Great video!!
Are you still using this product? How often do you apply fertilizers? Do you use NPK ratio during different times of the season? Is it possible to do a video on fertilizer during different timed of the season (from spring to winterize esp in North East). What about applying micro nutrients, humic acid etc.? I think i am asking too many questions.
The Lawn Food available on home depot is much better option its 10-0-2 and 25lb bag covers 5000 sq ft. for $19. This is pure organic fertilizer derived from soy meal. Add humic acid to it and you get natural compost with in few days.
What type of grass do you have, and at what rate do you apply the synthetic and organic fertilizers? I know for cool season grasses, it says to apply PGF Complete at 50-75% of the rate.
I'm going to look into this....I do 10 yards so cost is a factor too. I've been looking for an organic approach to this too. By the way I'm still drooling over the Andersons spreader. LOL Thanks for the info.

Recently, we have had several thunder storms with lightning in our area and my customers can't figure out why their grass is growing so fast to the point I can barely keep up. I tried the Milorganite and applied it once a few weeks after I put down some humic acid the week before-I didn't notice a huge difference at all for either. After I put down the Scott's dandelion/clover killer earlier this year, I did see that it killed off the clover, but it's starting to come back in some spots and since I live in a Townhouse complex, just about everyone else's yard is OVERRUN with crabgrass.-just not mine.
What what kind of synthetic fertilizer do you recommend for the 1st treatment? And when do you apply each treatment? Sorry I just had my lawn hydro seeding and new to lawn care :)
What are yourbrhoughts on applying the Innova organic just prior to winter Late November/early December in a colder weather region such as Pennsylvania?

Yes that is correct. Those grasses only exist in the most southern states so they really aren't that common through the US. I have exactly the mix of the types you mentioned. Thanks for watching.
I wish you would mention that switching from years of synthetic to organic takes patience. The whole idea behind an organics program is to feed the soil and the soil will provide everything the grass needs. Any homeowner that's been spreading Scott's weed & feed for years, their soil is void of any real nutrients. One application of Innova, Milorganite or any other quality organic fertilizer is not enough to reverse years of damage done by synthetics. I live in Texas and have been using organic fertilizer on my Zoysia since day 1 and I've been very happy with the results. The only part of the organics program that hard core organic proponents won't readily admit is there's really no effective way to control annual weeds. My backyard has been increasingly overrun with nutsedge, poa annua and other weeds. Years of corn gluten meal as a pre-emergent has NEVER provided any protection. After 20 years of all organic, I have decided to finally use sedgehammer for the nutsedge and other synthetics for the other weeds, while still using organic fertilizers. I'm hoping to find the proper balance that will yield the best results. For anyone in the southern US trying to decide which type of grass to install, Zoysia is the ONLY option IMHO. There are several types available, but it is without doubt the most drought and disease tolerant grass available. I personally prefer El Toro, which is what I installed 20 yrs ago, but there are others. It has a medium blade width and is super dense when it's healthy. I can't tell you how many compliments I've received over the years, especially being surrounded by so many unhealthy Bermuda lawns. Hope this helps anyone considering the switch to organics.
Best way to prevent weeds is to hand pull and don't core aerate and eventually your grass will smother everything but the occasional dandelion and poa triv. Core aeration provides opportunity for seeds already in the soil to emerge, and gives seeds in the air a place to sprout.
Great insight. Have you tried humic acid or adding any liquid micronutrient applications. Would love to know specifically your program and products. Thank you
I appreciate the insight also. I’m a beginner with lawn care living in SE Texas. I have St. Augustine. I wish it was Zoysia. Like walking on feathers. *sigh*

I just spread this product on my lawn for the first time yesterday. I am hoping for some good results. Only issue I had with this product as have others is the bag was ripped during shipping and about 10 lbs. of the product was lost. What is your experience with Anderson humid dg ?
That's great to hear. I hope it works as well for you as it has for me. That's too bad about the damage, if you got it through Amazon, I would write them they will make good on that for you. If it is working well for you that's great but in my experience you need a ridiculous quantity of product and it becomes very expensive which is what drove me to find an alternative.
@@SilverCymbal That is very little nitrogen at all compared to milorganite app. The milorganite app was even low. I'll be interested to see how the yard looks with that.
silver Cymbal, No wonder you didn't get results with milo. You only applied .18 - ,24 ponds of nitrogen from the milo. Most folks apply anywhere from .75 -1.0 ponds of nitro per 1000 sq ft.
@@mjohns80 If that's correct that would be very expensive per treatment, not to mention the amount of weight of the product. If you are having good luck with it that's great but using something at 10x the bag concerns me a bit, but the cost of it would be too prohibitive for me
@@SilverCymbal The bag rate is 14.4lbs per 1000sq ft because they say the 36lb bag covers 2500sq ft. That is around .85lbs N/1000. I'm not sure how big your yard is but it does get cumbersome and can be expensive if you have a bigger yard.
@@SilverCymbal I'm pretty sure that plain old soybean meal has all essential amino acids, vitamins, and lots of other good stuff. You should get a bag of generic soybean meal at a feed store and try that -- would make a great video.
"The Rolls Royce of spreaders", did you have to say that. Now my wife constantly teases me with that. She was standing in my MAN CAVE admiring your landscaping when you said that. Now she just thinks all men who watch this kind of stuff are crazy. "Sigh"
Organic fertilizers don't work instantly like chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers feed plants, but destroy dirt. Plants and grass take in the strong chemicals quickly, but the chemicals burn out the microbes in the soil. You'll have a lack of worms. You need to apply chemicals regularly to feed plants. Too much chemical fertilizer in one feeding will burn out plant life too. Organic fertilizers feed the soil. Microbes develop in the soil and plants feed on those microbes. Each application of organic fertilizer builds soil strength and after using for a period of time, less applications and quantities are needed. The reason the first organic fertilizer didn't work was it didn't have enough time for microbes to develop to the point where the grass could feed on it. The grass was seeing the effects of the first organic fertilizer after the 2nd & 3rd feedings. By the time you got to the product you like, your grass was benefiting from the earlier feedings. You can apply organic fertilizer year round because unlike grass, microbes continue to grow in cooler weather, just slower. When using chemical fertilizer and organic on the same lawn, the chemical kills the organic microbes. If you want to go organic, you've got to be patient.

Milorganite is ok but needs to be used when it’s worm out or it doesn’t work. And some organics need water right away to activate
My manure is good stuff
SC, this is just soybean meal. You can get a 50 pound bag at any feed store for $20.00.
I'm not sure it's the same, supposedly has trace elements, amino acids as well but who knows but it worked nice for me.
@@SilverCymbal I'm pretty sure that plain old soybean meal has all essential amino acids, vitamins, and lots of other good stuff. You should get a bag of generic soybean meal at a feed store and try that -- would make a great video.
@@lambert1702 I think your correct. The price of Andersons would work for a homeowner but not for someone doing it for a living.
Yup. Another channel sponsored by Anderson’s
I have to say I'm "shocked" you didn't have any results with Milorganite. I've used it for years. The Anderson products are very good.
I am too and went to huge trouble to get it during a shortage. I was very sad when it didn't perform.
I had really good results with it the first year and then for some reason not so much the second year.
Skip milo whow
I dont think u used enough milorganite . Throw it down liberally .
"The Rolls Royce of spreaders", did you have to say that. Now my wife constantly teases me with that. She was standing in my MAN CAVE admiring your landscaping when you said that. Now she just thinks all men who watch this kind of stuff are crazy. "Sigh"
That is hilarious! A lot of wives think we are crazy so you aren't alone!
No before and afters
I liked the video but the suggestion that synthetic fertilizers are somehow dangerous is exaggerated.
Nitro phos is good
Organic fertilizers don't work instantly like chemical fertilizers.
60$ for 40lb... so expensive. You can also find much cheaper simlilar products 1. at walmart same analyst 7-1-2 6x 5lb =30lb for 16.95$ (
Down To Earth Organic Soybean Meal), 2.Purely Organic Products LLC. Lawn Food 5,000 sq ft 10-0-2 22$ i see at walmart hd, lowes (soybean meal but diffrent analyst) ask at your local garden stores for more
Bummer! I just bought 2 bags of Milorganite last week for the same reason. I wanted a fertilizer that was safe for my dog. Plus I didn't want a fertilizer that accelerates the growth so I have to mow it twice as often. Oh well, I'm going to still use it an see what happens.
You may have better luck than I did, and it's definitely safe for your dog. Next time around you can always try innova or one of the other products if you dont have good luck.
Milorganite has worked for a lot of people if you put the correct amount down. You will probably enjoy using Milorganite. The biggest issue with Milorganite is trying to find it since there is a shortage since so many people have had good results.
Works great.
MILORGANITE!!! MILORGANITE!!! MILORGANITE!!! MILORGANITE!!! MILORGANITE!!! 👍✊🤘👍✊🤘
3-4 pounds of milo per 1000 will indeed do not much at all.
So expensive!
The price is ridiculous
Synthetic ,organic , organic synthetic so not all organic go green use liquid seaweed thick lush dark green for sure even the ugliest lawn bounce back
U should of used rgs lol
@4:50 Really doesn't want you to use Milorganite....grabs knife while talking about it... :)
Serious stuff this fertilizer!
A lot of money for 40 pounds, There are better ways for organic lawn feeding!! Do not need ANY chemical at all !!
Very overpriced stuff, buy the Scott natural food for $23, also from bone meal and feather meal, no waste. You are crazy if you think I'll spend almost $80 in a bag of fertilizer
Overpriced
