Awesome!! My daughters bought me a nice Stetson for my birthday, which is Christmas Eve, and it is too big. Rather than make them take it back I looked for a way to make it fit. You are the Champion!!! Worked like a charm!!

I use wool felt from the local fabrics store. It pretty much lasts forever and works well when you sweat. I bought a yard years ago and can make enough spacers for nearly 100 hats, maybe more.

All good ideas for making a large hat a slightly smaller head. You can also use narrow foam insulation strip. Just cut it to the length you need to make the hat fit, generally people put it in front under the sweat band and it also blocks sweat. You can use more than 1 piece if needed.

I have always used a wall unit a/c filter. I cut strips about 3/4 of an inch wide and then cut to length. Sometimes just need around the back or the sides, rarely on the front unless it’s necessary. Sometimes just on the sides, just wherever necessary.

I use thin cardboard from a cereal box for most of mine. Mostly on the sides. I’m a long oval.

I'm bald and my head shape puts me square between a 7 and 7 1/8th. Got the 7/18th and used toilet paper to give me an extra 16th of an inch so it fit perfectly!

Good deal! My advice is to always by 1/8th of a size too big and pad it to the correct size. Palm leaf hats I get 1/4 larger to allow for shrinkage. Seems to make the perfect fit each time.

Most hats would fit me to tight and I size up but would have a small wiggle

Nice video, just subscribed. I just bought a cheap beginners $50 Bullhide brand 2X hat in size 7 1/2 (60) when I’m normally a 7 3/8(59).. The weird thing is it’s tight on the sides but there’s little gaps in the front and back. It’s almost like the hat pivots back and forth like a swing. I found your video searching to see if I should steam and reshape it, or exchange it for a 7 3/8 hat? The hat is really stiff/hard. Thx

    • @StartupCowboy
      @StartupCowboy  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for the subscription and the question! In order to get it to fit, you’re probably going to have to do multiple heat and sizing cycles. It could be possible that your head is not necessary a long oval and it might be that you need to order a hat that is in a round shape instead of a long oval. To be safe, if none of the shaping seems to be a good option, go ahead and exchange it. It might be the quickest option with the best result.

    Bigger???
    I do A size smaller
    ....
Put olive oil on the inside of the band...sit it above a boiling pot of water for a good wile
Stretch it on your head till it cools...shape it...
Thats how they did it back in the day...best fitting hat u could ever ask...for...wont shrink after a rain
It makes a bell shape brim....if u ever seen new hats that look like a bell..
    Thats why...they know hats..
But to each is his own

      Beowulf,
I will be the first to admit that there are many many ways to make a hat fit better. I have just had luck with this method, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only good one.
      Thanks for the feedback!

where can I get a straw cowboy hat that's 8" or so? I've got a big head

Do a video on what if the seem that holds the hat and sweatband together pops. I was trying to put a stampede string in my straw hat and the seem popped and went unthreaded. I am currently trying to sew it back in, but I also want a second opinion.

I have a size 7 1/8 straw hat that fits tight on the sides but is perfect in the front and back. I had tried the 7 1/4 but it was just way too loose that it’d almost fall off if I moved to quick. Is there a way to stretch the sides of the straw hat just a bit so it’d fit better?

I’ve had a old hat that fit perfect but the sweat band was falling apart and ugly so I cut it out now the hat is way to big I was thinking to order a hat a couple sizes smaller and cutout the sweat band and run it like that so I don’t have to worry about the sweat band breaking or falling apart
