After seeing the end of Overclockwise, and the last facial expressions they made when reading the paper, It almost looked like they read the transcript for the ending of Meanwhile.
They probably did. I'll bet they planned for Meanwhile to be the end, but never managed to get it quite right until after the first three endings. They only released Meanwhile as the ending it was because that's how long it took for them to get it just right.
I mean if you look at Fry's holophone projection in the beginning it's basically what happens in the last episode so it makes sense that the note was also what happened
When Comedy Central finished airing "Meanwhile" it jumped right to the very first episode of the show. No commercial's or anything. The show is perfectly circular.

I'm sad futurama ended, but you know it's a good thing, 140 episodes, great all around, lots of humor, ended on a high note, didnt over stay its welcome. And like the final ending, it basically causes an infinite loop
I actually really love them slapping each other. There's no real venom in it just two people giving each other a light smack and then going on with life.

Whoever says that robots are heartless, all you need to see is bender flipping the page when Fry and Leela are stuck looking at each other as if to say "No, no it can't be!" you can try to play it off bender but we know that there's something stirring in your mechanical shell
Then you have Bender immediately kidnapping and killing his first-born as a sacrifice to the Robot Devil in another episode. Even the Robot Devil called him heartless, haha. Point is: Bender's a jerk. But he's a loveable jerk. And that's what makes him awesome.
bender is maybe the most humane character in the show, most of the more existencial episodes are centered around him actually, it's such a weird an great choice, something that only futurama could have done so right
2:55 i really think this is one of the best romantic scenes i have ever seen. it explains a whole life story between two characters without any dialogue, or visuals. simple expressions explains their entire life together. absolutely genius writing.
Still a fan of the first showing of the final ending. After the flash of white it literally went and play the first episode, no ads or anything. It was instant. Ton of people honestly thought the intro was just part of the final episode until the episode start playing. It was super fitting.
What I like about the last ending is that it begins a time loop. Therefore the show, while it ended, never truly stopped which is why I think Futurama is one of the best series I’ve ever seen
This is what makes a show good. For all the crass dialogue and stupidity, the characters held actual emotions instead of playing at the idea of being in love with another character simply due to "character compatability". Fry and leela were two complete opposites with no grounding points for attraction besides emotion. Leela did hate the way fry acted and composed himself but still worked with him to have a meaningful relationship. Fry even hated how uptight leela was but still felt a spark to be with her even if it meant compromising on the "fun" decisions he made.
One aspect of this series I feel goes slightly underappreciated is how perfectly juxtaposed the (final?) finale is with the pilot: Here we have two people who couldn’t possibly start off as more polar opposites, but find they share a common bond in their loneliness and forge a friendship in the decaying underground ruins of Old New York. Over the course of the series, they slowly work to bring the best out of each other (sometimes without realizing it), and by the show’s end, their friendship has grown so much figuratively and literally, that they end up atop the tallest building in NEW New York, and Leela comes to the realization that even across entire lifetime with the world frozen around her, she was never lonely for a minute. This show is pure perfection. 😊
The first ending is so, so underrated. That music pulls on my heart strings every time. I remember being guttered Futurama coming back because I thought it would invalidate it. Thankfully they've knocked it out of the park 3 more times since. Fingers crossed they end it just as well at least one more time.
There is no bad ending, so here goes. 1st: Neutral ending. It is entirely open ended, but it is still a rewarding ending for the player. 2nd: Good ending. Again, open ended, but it does fully conclude the characters primary arcs together. Fry and Leila are together, and since episode one this has been THEIR story. 3rd: Hard mode secret ending: you learn the gist of their entire lives together and we know it has a happy ending. 4th: 100% completion. You see the true, beautiful ending, and we are rewarded as a player by learning our characters will receive another happy life together. Which is nice because we can assume they learned about this in ending 3, and the thing they smile about then wasn't necessarily this event. Fuck me I'm crying.

The Simpsons should had ended with behind the laughter, family guy should had ended in 2008 and spongebob after the movie. It’s better to end on a good note like this, king of the hill, regular show, Bojack horseman etc than become a Weekend at bernies style puppet Corpse like those three shows I mentioned

Same. It is such an amazing show and ending it right there was perfect. I always feel conflicted because I'm sure there were plenty of amazing episodes left on the cutting room floor but knowing where to end it really solidified how great the show is.
All good things most come to an end. As much as I want my favorites to last until eternity, evidence shows its best they don’t. I do think some shows CAN last forever, but even they need better quality control and to take a hiatus every now and then to give the writers time to work out the next steps (Doctor Who).

It’s the same reason Gravity Falls ended so well, too. I think creators know that good things must come to an end, and it’s the right thing to do in having an end goal in mind.
I kind of like how in the Meanwhile ending, it’s like the show is a loop. That’s the last episode, and Farnsworth said they would “live their lives over again.” Going back to the first episode. It’s a perfect loop.

I like the 4th finale but there is something about the first one that gets me the most. The fact that Leela kept there waiting for Fry to keep playing, and then the melody feels so simple and tender, but at the end is like he finally was able to show his feelings and play good without any help

Well, maybe the Meanwhile ending will end up being misinterpreted and they go back to the point where the button was broken, to live their lives again, except without the freeze of the universe
Interesting that every ending has something to do with Fry and Leela being together. Devil's hands ends with Fry finishing his performance, which was about Leela and his love for her, Wild Green Yonder ends with them saying they love each other and kissing, Overclockwise ends with them learning of their ultimate fate, and Meanwhile ends with them having lived their lives together in stasis, only to get to start all over again and spend even more time together. It's almost like a 'how I met your mother' type deal, where the overarching plot of the show was just Fry and Leela's relationship, with a bunch of hijinks thrown in here and there.
Because Futurama is a mostly episodic series, and Fry and Leela's relationship is the only main element that has an actual plot and development (besides secondary stuff, like Kif and Amy's relationship)

Truly a beautiful ending. The world needs more shows to have happy endings, or at least bittersweet endings. I just remember the darkest moment in this show was just Fry’s dog waiting his life out for him to come home. And as messed up as that is, it’s really not all that bad considering some other episodes of other shows. Thanks for posting this, my dude! It really took me back
That's what I really liked about the Scrubs ending, too (there is no 9th season). It's just this wonderful looping back and going through all those emotions and characters we loved and just ends on a precious note. No drama or craziness or mass death, just all the loose ends tied up and finished.
Most shows struggle to have ONE good ending, and Futurama managed to have FOUR. I’m not even worried about the revival, I’m sure the next ending will be just as great
If I could pick a favorite 'Futurama' finale, it would have to be "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" and "Meanwhile". Both of them are so wonderfully done, and each of them were the best endings to the show itself.
First time I saw meanwhile. Me: this is not exactly what I expected, pretty average. Leela: it was a good life Fry: kinda lonely? Leela: I was never lonely, not even for a minute. Me: immediately starts crying

I find that seriously annoying considering the Simpsons-Futurama crossover had the tagline something like “a show running out of episodes and a show running out of ideas”
The 4th ending is truly the greatest. It's tactical. They KNEW they will make another comeback! A time loop is the perfect excuse to make more when they return! Can't wait for the new series!
The first ending is overlooked now because of its inconclusive nature but I do really like how it represents Fry's good-natured but simple-minded personality
Maybe if they ever continue the series, which is unlikely, they'll have the professor realize they're in a time loop or something. It'd be awesome if they continued it though. Since the show was always a sort of parody of real life, they'd have plenty of material to work with with everything that's happened since the show ended
There's something so subtle and bittersweet about the first series finally that it's my favorite. The melody fry plays on his holophonor sounds sloppy yet still beautiful and that's similar to Fry and Leela's relationship. It gives of an uncertain ending. The other endings wraps up the series better but as a kid watching this and thinking it was the last episode ever, I guess my nostalgia wins over me.
Yeah it was written before they found out they were getting another season. Glad they did though as Overclocked just felt like another episode while "Meanwhile" felt like a finale
They certainly knew how to do their finales justice. I actually didn't know Overclockwise was intended as a finale. This got off with having not one but four good endings that could wrap it all up if they weren't continuing. Yet Futurama is so cleverly done the endings still leave ground to return. A lot of other shows have such a large build up only to end terribly; not even having one good ending.
I honestly believe he refuses to allow Futurama to return for even one season, so long as they do not have a plot narrative going, since Futurama is a linear story, not a "monster-of-the-week" series in the way Simpsons, and to a lesser extent, Rick-and-Morty are.

Can someone try to explain how this show got cancelled multiple times and the Simpsons is still somehow on the air, despite being vastly inferior to Futurama?
Because Futurama couldn't keep up the viewer numbers that The Simpson continued to have, it was less family friendly with gross out humor (which made it competition for South Park), and Fox had a shit television marketing team since it basically wiped clean every single show from its broadcast aside from the most popular ones (Simpsons being popular, obviously) to put in new ones for the summer, such as Firefly (which had Fox's wonderful logic of airing the episodes out of order), all those new shows got canned and Futurama and Family Guy got reinstillated by the fall season. Basically, low viewership, mature subject matter for early 2000's, and Fox being incompetent. The Simpsons were still in their prime during two of Futurama's cancelations, now it has bad writers.
Its hardly the only show this happened to. Fix simply hated its own shows. Family Guy and American Dad got csncelled too. Firefly. All wildly successful shows that Fox execs wohld rather kill than profit from.

@@l30ng62 In “The Why of Fry” when Fry goes back in time with the help of the giant Brains, he meets with Nibbler under the desk. When Nibbler gives Fry the choice to stay in the past or go the future, Fry mentions Leela. Nibbler responds thoughtfully, “Leela? She must be the other.” Thus indicating that Leela also helps Fry save the universe. Granted, she did have a hand in saving earth in “The Day the Earth Stood Stupid” but given the weight of the statement and how many times Fry helped save the universe, there had to have been more to Leela’s role.

Futurama was the greatest of all. there are so many meaningful emotional episodes that make you just wanna cry. the bee sting episode, Fry visiting his mother and also his brother's tribute to him, Zoidberg finally finding happiness, Hermes saves a defected robot in Bender who becomes a father(and god) and none of us will forget the dog Seymour who is forever walking on sunshine.
AMEN, to every example. God I love this show. I am so nervous about it coming back, I don't want the morons to ruin it... But, then again, maybe it'll be this brilliant all over again. It's made me laugh until I was sore, broken my heart, made me cry tears of joy, and always, always was interesting.
I finished watching futurama in order last night and I legit cried. I did watch the ending when it first aired but I was 8 years old and I started watching it around season 8 cause it was airing that season then. I stopped watching it for a few years and then I rewatched it in order a week ago. When I finished it, it was the first time I cried about a movie or a tv show. It’s sadder when you watch in order cause you feel like you grow with the characters. Thanks Futurama, you raised me...

You know what I really like? The series ends with Fry and Leela being together for years and years and years, just enjoying the time they have. I also really like the representation for people who are together but choose not to have children or get married. You don't see that often in shows. Not in ones as early as this, at least.
While that can represent what you said, certainly that wasn't the intention, if they have included a child, it'd be weird if they've decided to go to live their lives again before the pause. At the end of the day, any love story, real or fictional, it's about the couple and how they felt about each other and what they lived together, not the friends, not the children, not the relatives.
The time loop ending and the Space Bee episode where Fry sacrifices himself for Leela but the stinger goes through him and poisons her, brought real tears to my eye. It was a beautiful idea to let him eventually get the girl, despite all her best instincts! The 100 espresso episode also stands out. Cartoons aren't always the poor relation of live drama.
Meanwhile reminded me of the song at the end of Wall-E. And that is all, that love is about. And we'll recall when time runs out. That it only took a moment to be loved. A whole life long.
Technically there’s a fifth ending. The crossover they did with _The Simpsons._ Although nobody from that show remembers anything, it _did_ happen. And as near as I can tell it was after the fourth ending in the _Futurama_ timeline..
There’s also an audio drama (released as part of the Nerdist podcast) which is also supposed to take place after Meanwhile. They don’t really elaborate on how this is possible but I guess the Professor or somebody else must have subconsciously remembered what happened and knew not to use the button.
I guess it’s because Leela and Fry finally find out their fate together and how their lives are going to pan out, but it’s good because it doesn’t tell you what it says, so you can make up your own interpretations.
Overclockwise was originally written and produced like as if it was a series ending (just in case Futurama wouldn't be renewed for another season). It is also generally considered to be the "third ending". See theinfosphere.org/Overclockwise#Production for confirmation.
I think the "Rebirth" episode was a real missed opportunity. They could have spent 6-12 episodes on the run in strange new territory, for some extra variety in the show.
I watched this show since it first premiered back in 99 and I fell in love with immediately. I laughed and cried with this show. It was always there for me like a best friend. I am going to miss the hell out of :/
They could reboot the show with the time button taking them back to when he first wakes up in the year 3000. HE is the only person to remember anything since he had that brain wave thing. He tries to change the future but no matter what he does nothing changes.
I loved ‘Meanwhile’ as an ending to Futurama. It was a beautiful end to it all. The fact that it loops back to the beginning is a bonus. Also, if you want to get all meta, in ‘the devils hands are idle playthings’ you see Fry and Leela kiss and walk into a white void. In ‘into the wild green yonder’ Fry and Leela kiss again before entering an unknown wormhole. In ‘overclockwise’ Fry and Leela read the cliff notes to ‘Meanwhile’ and then the screen cuts to black after they look at each other lovingly. (I know they don’t kiss in that one at the end but humour me) And finally, they share a kiss and embrace before the professor fixes it all and a white screen appears, ending the episode. It was all planned.

Here we have two people who couldn’t possibly start off as more polar opposites, but find they share a common bond in their loneliness and forge a friendship in the decaying underground ruins of Old New York. Over the course of the series, they slowly work to bring the best out of each other (sometimes without realizing it), and by the show’s end, their friendship has grown so much figuratively and literally, that they end up atop the tallest building in NEW New York, and Leela comes to the realization that even across entire lifetime with the world frozen around her, she was never lonely for a minute.
This show is pure perfection. 😊

The first ending is so, so underrated. That music pulls on my heart strings every time.
I remember being guttered Futurama coming back because I thought it would invalidate it. Thankfully they've knocked it out of the park 3 more times since. Fingers crossed they end it just as well at least one more time.

There is no bad ending, so here goes.
1st: Neutral ending. It is entirely open ended, but it is still a rewarding ending for the player.
2nd: Good ending. Again, open ended, but it does fully conclude the characters primary arcs together. Fry and Leila are together, and since episode one this has been THEIR story.
3rd: Hard mode secret ending: you learn the gist of their entire lives together and we know it has a happy ending.
4th: 100% completion. You see the true, beautiful ending, and we are rewarded as a player by learning our characters will receive another happy life together. Which is nice because we can assume they learned about this in ending 3, and the thing they smile about then wasn't necessarily this event. Fuck me I'm crying.
This show is so much better than what the Simpsons became.

I agree so much with your comment. The Simpsons were magnificent, but as time went on it’s gotten worse and worse. It was a good show and should have ended while it was ahead, instead of completely ruining itself and jumping headfirst into the grave of trashy tv history.

As much as I loved Futurama as a show, I'm glad that the show went out on a high, rather go on for too long and lose its quality over time like The Simpsons
Same. It is such an amazing show and ending it right there was perfect. I always feel conflicted because I'm sure there were plenty of amazing episodes left on the cutting room floor but knowing where to end it really solidified how great the show is.

All good things most come to an end. As much as I want my favorites to last until eternity, evidence shows its best they don’t. I do think some shows CAN last forever, but even they need better quality control and to take a hiatus every now and then to give the writers time to work out the next steps (Doctor Who).

It’s the same reason Gravity Falls ended so well, too. I think creators know that good things must come to an end, and it’s the right thing to do in having an end goal in mind.
I kind of like how in the Meanwhile ending, it’s like the show is a loop. That’s the last episode, and Farnsworth said they would “live their lives over again.” Going back to the first episode. It’s a perfect loop.
I thought he meant relive their lives from the point he made to Time Button thing. Not their entire lives from the point they were born.

I like the 4th finale but there is something about the first one that gets me the most. The fact that Leela kept there waiting for Fry to keep playing, and then the melody feels so simple and tender, but at the end is like he finally was able to show his feelings and play good without any help

Interesting that every ending has something to do with Fry and Leela being together. Devil's hands ends with Fry finishing his performance, which was about Leela and his love for her, Wild Green Yonder ends with them saying they love each other and kissing, Overclockwise ends with them learning of their ultimate fate, and Meanwhile ends with them having lived their lives together in stasis, only to get to start all over again and spend even more time together. It's almost like a 'how I met your mother' type deal, where the overarching plot of the show was just Fry and Leela's relationship, with a bunch of hijinks thrown in here and there.
Because Futurama is a mostly episodic series, and Fry and Leela's relationship is the only main element that has an actual plot and development (besides secondary stuff, like Kif and Amy's relationship)

Truly a beautiful ending. The world needs more shows to have happy endings, or at least bittersweet endings. I just remember the darkest moment in this show was just Fry’s dog waiting his life out for him to come home. And as messed up as that is, it’s really not all that bad considering some other episodes of other shows. Thanks for posting this, my dude! It really took me back

That's what I really liked about the Scrubs ending, too (there is no 9th season).
It's just this wonderful looping back and going through all those emotions and characters we loved and just ends on a precious note. No drama or craziness or mass death, just all the loose ends tied up and finished.

If I could pick a favorite 'Futurama' finale, it would have to be "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" and "Meanwhile". Both of them are so wonderfully done, and each of them were the best endings to the show itself.

There's something so subtle and bittersweet about the first series finally that it's my favorite. The melody fry plays on his holophonor sounds sloppy yet still beautiful and that's similar to Fry and Leela's relationship. It gives of an uncertain ending. The other endings wraps up the series better but as a kid watching this and thinking it was the last episode ever, I guess my nostalgia wins over me.

Yeah it was written before they found out they were getting another season. Glad they did though as Overclocked just felt like another episode while "Meanwhile" felt like a finale

They certainly knew how to do their finales justice. I actually didn't know Overclockwise was intended as a finale. This got off with having not one but four good endings that could wrap it all up if they weren't continuing. Yet Futurama is so cleverly done the endings still leave ground to return. A lot of other shows have such a large build up only to end terribly; not even having one good ending.
I honestly believe he refuses to allow Futurama to return for even one season, so long as they do not have a plot narrative going, since Futurama is a linear story, not a "monster-of-the-week" series in the way Simpsons, and to a lesser extent, Rick-and-Morty are.

The second ending is where you decided killed someone in story and get somewhat ambiguous fate ending
The third ending is the good end ending where maximize your love interest relationship and get the girl
The fourth and final ending is the secret ending after complete all the side quest and maximize all characters relationships and friendships and defeating the secret boss (basically its 100% completion)

Because Futurama couldn't keep up the viewer numbers that The Simpson continued to have, it was less family friendly with gross out humor (which made it competition for South Park), and Fox had a shit television marketing team since it basically wiped clean every single show from its broadcast aside from the most popular ones (Simpsons being popular, obviously) to put in new ones for the summer, such as Firefly (which had Fox's wonderful logic of airing the episodes out of order), all those new shows got canned and Futurama and Family Guy got reinstillated by the fall season.
Basically, low viewership, mature subject matter for early 2000's, and Fox being incompetent. The Simpsons were still in their prime during two of Futurama's cancelations, now it has bad writers.
Its hardly the only show this happened to. Fix simply hated its own shows. Family Guy and American Dad got csncelled too. Firefly. All wildly successful shows that Fox execs wohld rather kill than profit from.

When Nibbler gives Fry the choice to stay in the past or go the future, Fry mentions Leela. Nibbler responds thoughtfully, “Leela? She must be the other.” Thus indicating that Leela also helps Fry save the universe. Granted, she did have a hand in saving earth in “The Day the Earth Stood Stupid” but given the weight of the statement and how many times Fry helped save the universe, there had to have been more to Leela’s role.

Futurama was the greatest of all. there are so many meaningful emotional episodes that make you just wanna cry. the bee sting episode, Fry visiting his mother and also his brother's tribute to him, Zoidberg finally finding happiness, Hermes saves a defected robot in Bender who becomes a father(and god) and none of us will forget the dog Seymour who is forever walking on sunshine.

I finished watching futurama in order last night and I legit cried. I did watch the ending when it first aired but I was 8 years old and I started watching it around season 8 cause it was airing that season then. I stopped watching it for a few years and then I rewatched it in order a week ago. When I finished it, it was the first time I cried about a movie or a tv show. It’s sadder when you watch in order cause you feel like you grow with the characters. Thanks Futurama, you raised me...

The 4 Endings are special to me in it own way. All of them involucrates the Fry and Leela relation on a sweet way.
You know what I really like? The series ends with Fry and Leela being together for years and years and years, just enjoying the time they have.
I also really like the representation for people who are together but choose not to have children or get married. You don't see that often in shows. Not in ones as early as this, at least.
While that can represent what you said, certainly that wasn't the intention, if they have included a child, it'd be weird if they've decided to go to live their lives again before the pause. At the end of the day, any love story, real or fictional, it's about the couple and how they felt about each other and what they lived together, not the friends, not the children, not the relatives.

The time loop ending and the Space Bee episode where Fry sacrifices himself for Leela but the stinger goes through him and poisons her, brought real tears to my eye. It was a beautiful idea to let him eventually get the girl, despite all her best instincts!
The 100 espresso episode also stands out. Cartoons aren't always the poor relation of live drama.

Technically there’s a fifth ending. The crossover they did with _The Simpsons._ Although nobody from that show remembers anything, it _did_ happen. And as near as I can tell it was after the fourth ending in the _Futurama_ timeline..
There’s also an audio drama (released as part of the Nerdist podcast) which is also supposed to take place after Meanwhile. They don’t really elaborate on how this is possible but I guess the Professor or somebody else must have subconsciously remembered what happened and knew not to use the button.
I haven’t seen it in a while, but it first aired after the last of the above four, so it counts as a final episode in my mind..

I loved ‘Meanwhile’ as an ending to Futurama. It was a beautiful end to it all. The fact that it loops back to the beginning is a bonus. Also, if you want to get all meta, in ‘the devils hands are idle playthings’ you see Fry and Leela kiss and walk into a white void. In ‘into the wild green yonder’ Fry and Leela kiss again before entering an unknown wormhole. In ‘overclockwise’ Fry and Leela read the cliff notes to ‘Meanwhile’ and then the screen cuts to black after they look at each other lovingly. (I know they don’t kiss in that one at the end but humour me) And finally, they share a kiss and embrace before the professor fixes it all and a white screen appears, ending the episode. It was all planned.
