Great even-handed review Alexander. I want to do an Okinawa game duet (US army on one map, and the USMC on the other) of the Shuri Line. You can have two players playing Army and Marines cooperatively-but if one fails, all fail.

    Ramones for the win!
Thanks for this review ; good to hear they’ve reversed course on the rules, as I love the Pacific! Cheers!

The flip books that are available for the D-Day series really help in both learning and playing the game the first couple of times.

D-Day at Iwo Jima was so messed up. Glad to hear Saipan is putting things back on track, but No Butterfield = No Buy.

There won’t be any new Butterfield games in this system anymore. He prefers to do other designs.

Looking at it and how you explained it wow - hard yards. It seems like manoeuvre between the Japanese emplacements in the early game is very difficult and the in-depth lines of emplacements covering the ways forward are really Intimidateing. Given the cards, it seems like moving forward and achieving anything is based a lot on the luck of the "flop".

I noticed your tweezers... found same on Amazon. How well do you like them as compared to others with bent tips?

You can rubber tip any pair of tweezers.

Joe Youst really screwed up D Day At Iwo Jima. And yet Decision Games gave him the helm to “design” D Day At Saipan. I threw out Iwo and I purposely avoided Saipan. Stay away from anything designed by Youst. Decision Games should have ended this series after Peleliu. Without Butterfield’s hand on the game, it’s not worth publishing.

Sorry V. Iwo Jima was so different from all the other battles that it had to have the changes it did. No other game in the series had to account for such a long campaign with such lethal positions as Iwo. the only problem for many was the fact that we did not put the fire dots on the map (except for hilltop positions and black positions). Saipan was much more like the other battles in the series. Saipan, BTW, had the bloodiest single day of any other Pacific campaign (the first day). I was also able to eliminate all single multi-hex positions thus simplying the rules in that regard. You'll find Saipan to be as playable and then some, as Peleliu and Omaha. For Iwo, when you look at the fact that positions like hill 381 held out for something like 20GTs with USMC units adjacent to it for almost that entire time, you realize that special rules (Black PGs) were needed for that game.

This is unnecessarily harsh and there are more factors than you probably took into account.

@@joeyoust3677 Critics will be critics, the point is designers learn and amend in future.
I truly like the series. Iwo was the most difficult to fit in after playing the other games (are there any plans for Decision Games to redo the map for Iwo?).
This series still ranks in my top three Decision Games productions. Next to Storm of Steel (WW1), and Axis Empire (both Europe and Pacific).
