A proper disclosure here fellas (since I don't think I explained it very well): By RETIRING a skin I am not saying to cancel it forever, more so to give the skinline a break for awhile - not only so it feels exciting when they DO return, but also to make room for new skinline ideas as well as potentially reviving some old ones that haven't seen the light of day in some time. The later of which will be the subject of next week's video >:)
I love and respect you Nicky... but if they retire SG I'm about to throw hands. Not only is it one of the few skinlines with actual lore( AND IT GETS EXPANDED AT MOST ONCE A YEAR), us SG fans were left eating crumbs for THREE WHOLE YEARS. Even if this years SG event was all over the place I created so many good memories playing trough it, reading the story with my BFF and enjoying the skins that I get a nostalgic feeling every time i look back( even if Riot kinda flopped). And when it comes to expanding the universe I think there's a lot to be done. We know what happened with each of the guardians in 2022 EXCEPT Lux, we don't know what Syndras entire deal is, the other guardians in Zoes team...etc My biggest wish is for the guardians to defeat the darkness once and for all, Zoe (and others) gets fully uncorrupted and Harp *somehow* comes back( shed also make a cool LoL character). Imo Zoe is 10 times better at being a villain then Viego simply because her reason is justified (in her own, mad way, that ALSO makes the reader sympathize for her) the idea that she wants to kill all the star guardians just so that no one can fall again is so heartbreaking for me because it goes to show she truly cares about Harp even after all those years ...its just that the darkness within her forces her to strive towards chaos (reading their conversation for the first time genuinely brought me to tears :( ). Also I know some people think '' oh but that's not a realistic way to end the story'' and whatnot but I think people have forgotten that THIS IS STAR GUARDIANS - NOT PROJECT AND NOT CRIME CITY NIGHTMARE. This may be unrealistic but sometimes people don't wanna deal with the bs of reality. Every story nowadays is full of drama, conflict and losses, when sometimes a tale is just a tale... sometimes you just want things to turn out ok without losing something precious to you - because such moments exist throughout our lives. So I truly wish we can have this skinline be the one with the ''happily ever after''. :3 I'm sorry for my rant and if you read all of this - thank you, whoever you are.
I do agree with too many star guardians but I'm still disappointed that Taric, the protector chosen by the stars, therefor A LITERAL STAR GUARDIAN does not have a star guardian skin
They should have given in to the meme and make Urgot a Star Guardian, like a retired battle scarred Star Guardian who in the lore forced himself into battle one more time to safe some of the newer ones. He could be a professor at their school in lore who needs a wheelchair to get around and needs a machine to help him breathing because of an injured lung or something.
Still waiting for the inevitable star guardian uwu 4 guy to make the skin line more likable. Magical girls anime is catered towards female kids if I remembered correctly. Always wondered why star guardian got so much hype. The skinline's upside is only being a laugh material and a slightly better version of dawnbringer nightbringer lore wise
I think the thing I hate about modern High Noon isn't necessarily the number of skins, it's the fact that they're all JUST angels vs demons (so just Night/Dawnbringer AGAIN). When the theme first got reworked they had Jhin as an automaton, Kog'Maw and Skarner as these mutant bugs, Karthus as a ghost pastor (in Lucian's story), and a lot of neat Weird West concepts with demons thrown into the mix. I wish they played more into that instead of taking the demon route every time. Give me Werecoyote Warwick or Vulture Vampire Swain. Also ngl, I regularly forget that Night/Dawnbringer and Cosmos/Dark Star are two separate skinlines lmao
I agree, the demon route is always so repetitive. They did the exact same thing with the crime city/mafia skins which used to be all gangsters and mobsters but now it has demons too, like why??
They can’t even do the heaven or hell Yeehaw thing right. How does rell not get a Highnoon skin but Leona even gets a horse in hers? I’m almost convinced that when they’re not just filling out the quota fi popular character gets X skin, they’re throwing darts at the board for the rest of them.
I think your definition of “Retiring” in the context of these skin lines single-handedly saved a lot of your takes. Some of the skin lines here (e.g. Dawnbringer/Nightbringer or Infernal) haven’t really shown enough potential for good skin ideas, and somehow still manage to be oversaturated. However, some of the other skin lines here (Dark Star, Star Guardians, High Noon) have shown some pretty good ideas across multiple sets, but those good ideas aren’t the standard for the entire line due to oversaturation. In this sense, I could see temporarily retiring these skin lines as a good way to let them take the time to come up with more fresh ideas in these settings. Less High Noon Varus/Talon, more Leona/Thresh.
The first two dawn bringer wave of skins were great, Riven/Yasuo and Garen/Darius, because it was just two skins and they were really well put together. Very detailed stuff all around. But then they just decided to saturate the thematic giving it to a bunch of champions at the same time.
@@lasterman94100 those aren’t mutually exclusive things. In fact, I would argue that Oversaturation is caused by a lack of creativity. You wouldn’t call a game or movie genre oversaturated if every game or movie in that genre is unique and interesting.
@@eloquence_4143 well by using your logic, I wouldn't call an anime skinline bad if it was new and unique yes, the star guardian is a rendition of old school magical girl, it had its time under the sun, now it's time to be creative and explore other anime tropes among the thousand there are instead of releasing more and more waifu material with boring color schemes Star guardian, like many other themes, should have been one or two of, not recurring over the years, because they lost their uniqueness in the process, it should retire for good this time (but of course it won't because it's free money for rito with all the suckers that would buy any skinline anyway)
Don't forget that this year, on top of getting only THREE champs that were actually planned for 2022 and a rework, we also got: -No Skarner news -No promised Ahri ASU -No Void event -A Star Guardian event with a 500 RP skin of ultimate spellbook -Only 10 short stories and a comics, with a third of the short stories being stuff delayed from last year, which still had 17 stories. Although to be fair we also had a book on the Ruination. Last year's event. But heh, hopefully that massive slowdown is either the sign that employees are being allowed to take their time in production and/or that the MMO is being worked on.
@@mcbinladengames there really should have been an event for bel'veth's release, they literally made a whole animation about it that stemmed from the 2022 the call trailer, like it comes off like it was meant to be a big event that pushed the current lore of runeterra forward a bit, but instead riot literally gave star guardians a bigger event than what the void event should have been, an entirely separate universe that has essentially no hold or has anything to do with the actual main lore of runeterra got more of an event, that just doesn't make sense to me.
I have to disagree with Battlecast. There’s too much potential for some very unique skins. I just hope if they do go down that route, they go closer to the Skarner route than the Nasus route.
I dunno. The only MUST for Battlecast is Bel'Veth, IMO. That skinline clearly revolves around Viktor and his monstrous creations. The humans in the Resistance really aren't that interesting. But most of the monster champs have a Battlecast skin already, and the ones that don't already have something very similar (like Eternum Rek'Sai or Mecha Aurelion Sol). I think Volibear could pull off a good Battlecast skin. IIRC he doesn't really have a mechanical-themed skin yet. And I wouldn't mind a legendary Battlecast Yuumi where she's a kind of repair drone in Viktor's army.
@@GeneralSecura I was thinking more along the lines of Battlecast Hecarim, Thresh and maybe Sylas (to make up for Project Sylas) Battlecast Yummi is a really fun idea though. I also like your idea of Voli. I dont really care for the resistance skins much tbh. I just want cool ass Robots.
@@TKinfinity01 I think Hecarim and Thresh wouldn't work for the same reason that Nasus doesn't work: it looks weird for the Battlecast robots to be that humanoid and hold weapons. I think Thresh could work as a Resistance skin by making him a cyborg-enhanced human like Illaoi or Yorick.
Am I the only one who thinks that the Spirit Blossom skinline, with the second wave, is already overdue? The first wave was massive and everything, the second was screaming " We need money and we don't want to put effort, let's use spirit blossom for some quick buck"
Yeah I agree. It doesn't help that it got a small trailer and everything but all it was was the skins. They hyped it up like it was gonna be another cool event but it didn't amount to shit lmao.
i got almost all of the Spirit Blossom 1st gen skins, but i didnt get a single one of the 2nd gen, even tho Darius is/was the champ i have the most mastery on. It's incredibly mediocre, except for Sett because legendaries get a pass i guess
I think it's the same with the Bee skin line. It's quickly becoming oversaturated and unimaginative. But they still tend to be cute (for the most part) so it becomes a quick money grab instead of producing cool skins
@@GeneralSecura Justicar was originally just an idea of "this is how people see him who idolize him as a hero" not necessarily a canon form. i think it's unlikely and Justicar is just a take on "holy warrior" but at least the original God Warrior look is a concept that they have a lot of freedom to explore
@@GeneralSecura Justicar Aatrox was released when he was in his pre-rework time before they reworked him changed the Darkin lore into: Shurima Ascended gone PTSD in Icathia War and using blood magic to shape themselves, becoming Darkins
Star Guardian at this point almost feels like it could become a separate project completely divorced from League, if that makes sense. Most skinlines have a big separate universe included, but the Star Guardians universe in particular get a shit ton of promotion pretty much whenever there's a new batch of them. There was a whole PvE event themed after it, another event, a few vocal themes, animated music videos...at this point just give them a dedicated animated series or something lol
I think for Star Guardian the need to take breathers and wait for like 2, 3 years to have cool concepts, hell, Gwen and Akshan sound cool, but I want to see that another time, or having 2 star guardian groups that collide woth each other on the ways they do things, but they want to get along (like having Diana, Kat, Graves and Sejuani im one side and Leona, Garen, TF and Ashe on the other) or adding an evil familiar like the one from Madoka Magica that everyone hates (like Yuumi, Teemo or someone like that) that could be awesome, but they need time and I hope there is a hiatus for Star Guardian. Same with High Noon. Loved the idea of this cowboys that means dead is arriving (because that means Kindred maybe can have a legendary skin) but they need time to play with this idea better (even tho I'm a big sucker for this skinline because cowboy hat = buy for me at least). Or a Coyote Warwick, but that's irrelevant. The only new PROJECT idea I have is PROJECT Kayne, because it's right there, make one of them PROJECT, the other one is PROGRAM there, easy. Like, Warwick was the last "creative" program skin that put something new in the skinline. And for Spirit Blossom the only one I think could be something amazing is Quinn. Make her the spirit of the hunt or the spirit of friendship. And Warwick, but again, irrelevant (mainly because I think warwick works a lot with this skinline) Do I like this skin lines? Yeah. Do they need time to formulate new ideas? Hell yeah
I might be the only one who actually liked program skins.. and I think Kayle could be a good fit, being an IA who got justice wrong just like real IA's getting corrupted by internet and having racist idea after a few days without control, she could be the embodiement of literal justice without any nuance (which she is in her base lore, sadly..) and as she gets her in game evolve with passive, she'd become a world ender IA (just like many people, currently, fear that IA will someday take over humanity)
@@ayouneii3659 they already did that idea with mordekaiser being a security AI that decided locking humanity up was the best way to keep them from killing each other until they're extinct similar to irobot
@@swolegolisopod7340 I admit I never read project lore cause.. "what if champion but robot", but even knowing that, I still think it would be interesting to do something like this for Kayle, both to show an aspect of justice motivated by bias they learned themselves and to sorta criticize/show that Riot is self aware (with a touch of humour) how binar they wrote Kayle's base lore also program skin got a really lit aesthetic imo
@@ayouneii3659 I think that can work really well, like a security drone going rogue. The only proble is what they said, we already have PROJECT Morde doing that
The only reason I would ever want to go back to Kanto, would be if they did a Black and White 2 style game where they bring in outside Pokémon, add new areas, continue the story, add new characters, that kinda of thing. And if they want to go the extra mile, we get a Johto post-game
I require more corporate skins. I need warwick, the wolf of wall street. I also require athletic Illaoi, carrying around a big dumbbell, but that's definitely for fetish reasons.
Skins make money, it's probably the only thing Riot makes any money off of League. So usually when a skinline get's popular, they tend to get milked like a cow till the milk eventually turns into Blood. So I think the idea of making skinlines go on a retirement period is a good idea, especially the ultra popular ones so that way when a new set of skins is introduced they can be let out with a little fanfare. But that could be me remembering when Riot would do fun stuff for certain skins like Odessesy or Star Guardians.
I really liked the Ashen knight concept since I am a souls fan, and I think Pyke and Mordekaiser look amazing, but Riot needs to understand that ashen knight is all about FACELESS knights, not Mr.Ruinated Pantheon Chroma
There is something good to this though, Riot knows their skin lines can get boring. That is why they have been updating old concepts. Gothic -> Fright Night High Noon (cowboys) -> High Noon (cowboys + angels and demons) Groovy -> Space Groove Crime City -> Crime City Nightmare Arclight may get updated after Gothic and Infernal, since it ended up in last place. Now, for the bad things... Is Ocean Song meant to replace Pool Party? If so, it is a downgrade. Dawnbringer/Nightbringer got ridiculous, but I came to share this realization: Dawnbringer was already Arclight 2 and Nightbringer was Infernal 2, even the TFT team noticed that. And still, all these skin lines were boring because they missed the point (Arclight, Infernal and the bringers were essentially glorified chromas). Infernal Nasus was a good example of an Infernal skin, but I don't think there is a nice way to rescue the others. I am assuming Empyrean is the new Infernal (it was rumored to be called Neon Inferno), which is in no way an improvement either. Hopefully, Arclight gets a nice upgrade. I only wish Riot would revive the old themes like Day Job, Definitely Not and Gentleman. Those were fun skin lines that didn't need to be edgy to be good and were only really held back by their limited quality and price, though apparently China doesn't like them and preferred an unimaginative Afternoon Bringer Yone instead...
I definitely want Definitely Not to come back. So many wacky ideas. Definitely Not Bel'Veth with a balloon human head with market drawing for a face. Definitely Nit Rhaast, which is just Rhaast wearing a poorly-made Kayn disguise, and once he transform, they become very goofy, mascot versions of Rhaast and Shadow Assassin.
i need a part two but this time skinlines that riot needs to give a little more love. like so many potentials!! papercraft is very interesting and is very versatile, why is there only two?
I can never forgive Riot for stopping Demacia Vice because it wasn't "cool" enough for people to buy them. The one skinline where it's not out of place for Lux, and they missed it.
I'd actually love to see some of the World Ender skins coming back for monster and shape shifter champs like Skarner, Elise(like her LoR one) and Nidalee. Aztec style giant monsters just sound so cool.
Personally for Star Guardians, I think they should maybe do like 2 new champs, but make "transformation" forms like Power Rangers upgrades, or just a powered up mode in general. Have these power ups for the MAIN team and write a story with it
I feel like Riot won't stop until EVERY single champ has an Star Guardian skin, because they know most of the fanbase can't get enough of pixels on magic girl outfits
for the editor, at 7:23, where you corrected I'm assuming 'grey' to 'gray', both are right. Gray is used in america while grey is used in just about the rest of the english speaking world. Kinda like 'color' and 'colour'.
Honestly the main issue isn't the lines, it's the fact that riot needs to overinflate the lines with a whole 8 skins/patch and make an event around them. I think if they just casually released like 3-4 meaningful skins at a times
Skinlines I'd like to see more champs being added: Dark Omen (Noc, Kayle & Singed) Demacia Vice Papercraft Mecha Kingdom Program Rift Quest Shan Hai Scrolls Festival Queen (Anivia) Culinary Masters Woad Skinlines that could use a revamp/down time: Heartseekers Dragonslayers/mancers Coven Eclipse Cosmic Firecracker Project Pulsefire Spirit Blossom Star Guardians Bewitching
I would KILL for new Demacia Vice skins. Whenever I play Lucian or Garen, those are the ones I pick. If they released some original synthwave songs alongside the new skins, I think I'd die of happiness.
I love Woad skins, they are very low effort and I should probably find them boring, but there's something I really like about the theme. It would be nice if they revisit it with a twist, like they did for gothic or debonair.
I honestly would have loved to see that Young Justice rant. I love Young Justice's early seasons but its harder to invest in when there's new characters every season and there's always a 5 year gap between them.
Program should come back. I want program zac that looks like 1s and 0s in the matrix. Or he is made up of a bunch of blocks that move in a fluid motion.
I agree with all the skin lines mentioned. After a while they just grew out of proportion... in an event with 10 skins only 3 champions actually made sense in that universe. People complained not all champions got skins, so to remedy that Riot started making 3 times more skins but of course most of them went to popular champions to make it worth it. All their time and effort has been put into pumping out skins and it just starts to feel bland... as many champions get into skin lines that don't fit them and all "events" are just skin showcases. I'd rather have this effort put into making the game better and more fun
This validates my feeling returning to the game after some years. I didnt wanna be all boomer and go off saying "Why are so many of these skins mediocre!" but AS A DESIGNER I AM GLAD OTHERS NOTICED. Last I checked High Noon released with Senna and Urgot and then I check up on it and I see the state of affairs... yeesh. Also Project nearly oversaturated itself way back around Project Vayne era so the fact that it continues being mediocre is expected.
i think a major problem with most skin lines is that they try to hamfist the most popular champs into everyone even if an unpopular one would fit far better (see: rell not being in pentakill, eclipse or high noon)
"Why is Lillia a Nightbringer" Because making evil skins for cute and/or nice champions is based as hell, they're so good. There are two evil Zoe skins and I think they're her best skins
I really don't think it's the skinlines, it's just their philosophy in general. It's really easy to tell when they made some skins to pad out the event. Like this year High Noon, Spirit Blossom, Star Guardian, and even Arcana all had some really nice and some really low effort skins. For Arcana for example the Xayah Rakan skins look like a slight variation of their base skins. (Xayah in particular)
I think the problem comes when they release 10 skins into a skinline in ONE patch, then as soon as they come out, I already feel like the skinline is overused. F.ex. the empyrean skins
I really enjoyed today's video & I think you should top 5 or 10 skin lines that need to be brought back. Additionally, I feel like whenever we get 10 skins from the same skin line only 2 or 3 of them will shine & the rest will make me get bored of the skin line. This has only happened in recent years though. I forgot to mention that at this point we have had too many Good VS Evil skin lines. Nightbringer VS Dawnbringer, God-Kings, Star Guardian & Star Nemesis and some others.
As much as I LOVE star guardian you are 100% right. Riot needs to re-evaluate the actual point of this skinline instead of just putting a bunch of champions in the same outfit and acting like any of them actually have any impact on the overall story.
Man, the PROJECT SKINLINE could have such good designs. To me, they just have to stop releasing it every year, and come up with some good concepts and designs like the first time we got them. They feel unfinished to me, looking at you Bristle
Honestly, the BIGGEST missed potential skins for Champions is that there is no Star Guardian Skins for Diana or Kayle. I'll even settle for a Star Nemesis Diana for thematic purposes.
i think releasing 10 skins per line spread between 2 batches was overkill. releasing 2 lines of similar thematics in close proximity is kinda overkill as well.
Can we also "retire" Debonair and Crime City? The new Debonair skins were...okay, not great, not horrible...just okay. But the new Crime City skins...I don't know what went wrong between concept and execution but it kind of feels like what we got was an almost 180 of the original idea. I'm kind of also tempted to say "retire" the Monster Tamer skin line despite it being so new and having so few champions. Lulu was okay, Veigar just didn't fit and Kog'Maw was great [since he was portrayed as Lulu's monster]. Like if they decide to continue the skin line, they need to go down the tamer and monster route being 2 separate champions. Sure, this would mean the more animalistic or monster champions get stuck in the monster role, but as long as they make them look good, I can see it working.
I think I would be okay with more battelcast skin if they gave it some proper lore. It's not a teribly unice concept but I think if they go with the idia that it spring out from a some what similar time line from the og lol universe it could be interesting. Besides, Viktor deserves the spotlight for a bit.
In my opinion, the problem with skins currently is.... Riot is focused on rushing (I said "rushing" because that's how it feels...) more and more skins each year instead of releasing fewer but more polished skins.
Most of these skin lines are good the first time around and as soon as riot saw there was money to be made, they make a shit load of skins the next batch
I think the biggest problem with the skin lines, especially lower quality or not innovative skin lines, is how "important" skins are. They're the driving force and theme of the events/battlepasses, there's no cheap (
They used to have patches of 2 smaller themed sets. Like 3 champions in one theme and another 2-3 champions in another to flesh out the patch. Now they heat shove 6 per theme per patch and see what lands.
One skinline I would love to comeback is the Eternum. Like the designs are so sick, mixing steel, flesh and energy, very unique stuff. I really don't know why they did two of these skins and never revisited.
@@TimeFro Oh you're right, that skin doesn't really look eternal so I forgot about it lol, they messed up her face. It probably didn't sell very well, so that's why they haven't revisited the line.
Nightbringer Yasuo vs Dawnbringer Riven, combined with the Lore was one of the best skin releases. The issue is when they go too far. But dawnbringer Shen and Nightbringer Zed seems cool, or vice versa to spice things up. I like rivals.
The worst part about this year was the absolute saturation of skins. We got too many skins this year. It was skin after skin after skin. The worst part is that none of them were really that good or interesting for the most part. Yes, I know riot's main money making scheme is skins. Yes I know they want to put at least 1 really popular champ into every skin line. Yes I know champs who don't get skins often getting skins is good. But I don't want massive skinlines for the sake of giving 2 popular champs legendary skins and every other champ in the line an afterthought skin so that players can't complain about "x champ has no skins still". Skins used to be, generally speaking, pretty good. Original concepts, sometimes homages to other content, like with star guardian. Now its "which skinline can we recycle again?". Gone are the days of new and interesting lines, now they just reproduce the same line again because "well it sold well last time". Its the reason we get project all the time. Its the reason we got a half baked star guardian event. Its the reason they rushed out some boring new spirit blossom skins. "Oh it did well last time" is the idea behind everything riot does now, and its killing my interest. wow, another visual novel, but even more rushed with even less interaction? how many times can we put the same "event gamemode" before people get sick of it? apparently, the answer was twice.
Necromancer skins would be super cool with like souls and shrieks replacing the abilities and the characters themselves are dead as well, their bodies skeletal (besides the face cause riot LMAO) and clothes dark and shredded
I'd personally like it if we got skins for champions which don't necessarily fit in an existing skinline or come as part of a new skinline. Just something which fits the champion, either alligning with what they are or re-contextualizing them. At this point, I feel like new skins always come as either a new skinline or an addition to an existing one and that sucks imo, because often, those concepts are put on the populat champs because well money.
I feel people are taking this video the wrong way, in a certain sense. I'm seeing a lot of comments here of people defending and trying to 'validate' the skin lines that they personally don't want to see retired/given a break for a few years so other skin lines can be made/given a spotlight for a change, and I think that's just not the best way to look at it. Instead of looking at it as "this skin line I enjoy is going to go away for however long until it comes back in the future after a bit of a break", I think people should be seeing it as the chance for new opportunities to find another skin line that they might like or take interest in, more like "this gives riot the chance to create new skin lines or focus on other skin lines that haven't really been as explored as others yet". Like for instance, with as wacky and outlandish as the pool party skin line is, imagine how many more champions could be given a new skin based around that line still, that does something visually comedic and interesting with the character and sometimes can give the community some real bangers like rek'sai's was. Or with the newly released Fright Night skin line, they could expand on that skin line so much by going into not just horror themed characters, but they could maybe add it into and create another skin line to work along with it, Folk Lore or Olden Famous Stories and characters, like imagine a true to character Robin Hood skin for Varus, maybe a Pinocchio or Frankenstein Amumu, an Invisible Woman Evelynn. There's many directions and a lot of potential that riot can take when making as many skins as they make, so I feel they should really try to keep being creative and not try to keep focusing on just the same skin lines like every year or other year.
Man, you've done a great job at collecting all the cringe of skinlines just fine. I've almost broke my face from many of those you reminded me, skinlines of lost potential and/or lost logic (I am looking at you, PROJECT, where we have zogging ENERGY BOWS, when setting clearly has ENERGY RIFLES). I feel that pain.
I want to talk about a skinline that I want: I don't understand how we have Mech skins and Mecha Kingdom skins, in both skinlines they fight Kaiju, but we only have Urgot.
I can also appreciate dawnbringer Morgana because it highlights how she's actually the more morally upright seeker of justice of the two sisters. I actually low-key hope for a nightbringer kayle to exist as a corrupt beacon of "absolute justice"
I agree with Star Guardians. Probalby because I care more about the Story than the Skins. The characters I want in the Story already had Skins before this year. And man this year they released so much shovel ware and told like a new part of the Star Guardian Story without really finishing the last story. I hate how much Lux got cucked by Kai'sa.
I'd actually like a good, dutiful Star Guardians vs chaotic, unsatisfied Star Guardians Something they tried with Kai'sa and Akali. The good side being a team of 4 who are completely fulfilling the oath while the chaotic 4 search for ways to escape/break away from their Star Guardian fate. For good: Kayle, Tristana, Caitlyn, Garen Chaotic: Vex, LeBlanc, Lissandra or Zeri, Vi
the thing about high noon is that! there were good skins this year! tahm kench, leona, samira and twitch are brilliant! but they’re just lost in the mediocrity of “popular champion but in a flaming cowboy hat” (note: i still can’t tell high noon talon and varus apart)
I support the Star Guardian bit, but not for the same reason: I'm sure you've seen that one video floating around about how Madoka Magica really twisted the magical girl genre to an extent it can't come back from. That's the point I'm trying to make, that's the TL;DR. - The thing about Star Guardians that was amazing skinwise- that somewhat just BAFFLES me that no-one else respects: It's a team skin. Like it or not, Star Guardian skins are made to be team skins. They are just as much team skins as DWG or SKT skins... because that was the point. Lux was the first SG skin made, it was made from a completely original concept for Lux. Period. Season one was result of that idea being so *perfect* that it could fit other champions. The whole idea behind the skinline is that they are who they are, but in a magical girl AU. The first team was made: Janna, Jinx, Poppy and Lulu. These are all champions that sell like hotcakes. They knew this would sell. (They add 'hot selling' champions to first time thematics to make sure they sell something- but they were dead set on this selling. For example, Ezreal and Lux carried Porcelain if it didn't sell well.) (Also, Poppy was a high selling champion because she was recently reworked around this time.) The idea is their personalities are shown not only through their design, but the color they're associated with. The hot headed one is red, the healer is green, etc. This is gave depth... But not nearly as much as matching did. The star guardian skins sold mostly because they were all matching with one another. A full team of star guardians is a spectrum of colors, a rainbow. Season 2 came. With it, another team skin batch. The whole team is kept in mind when it comes to their colors, their uniform designs- visibly showing what personality the champion has. It followed the same code as Season 1, very closely. Now, it sold even more than last time- except for Ahri, who was the least favored of the batch despite her legendary skin. (Trust me, it was the voice.) (This is also when they decided that they always needed a familiar no-matter what.) But it still sold so much, still only targeted giving skins to the champions who'd always sell skins. The only 'riskiest' champion in the batch was Syndra's... who has the best VFX of them all. So why the HELL did season three happen? Don't get me wrong, I think this is when everyone thought SG was at its peak- but... It fell into the shallow trap that was placed by Madoka. Magical girls can only be but so unique without some dark, twisted change of plot that alters the series for the better or worse. For Star Guardians, this was for the worst in the long run. It should've ended right here- additional skins being part of Zoe's team. Star Guardians are team-oriented. They're team skins. Neeko single-handedly ruined it... and she could've also been a special exception-- but Riot knows these will sell regardless. Pajama Guardians are proof of this matter. No changes outside of a model change. It's an easy way to make a little cash since it quite literally is a rerelease of a skin set. I don't think there came any other non-legendary variant skin after that- simply because they just wanted an excuse for a little extra dough. (Lancer Paragon and Rogue came before this.) Enter Season 4. Now, I didn't mention story until season 3- because that's when pace was picked up. This is where it shatters. Season 4 set aside the entire rulebook season 1 set out-- and it shows. - The skins are not team oriented. Aside from mismatching splash arts- there's no color coding to the champions. - The designs of the champions do not reflect on the champion themselves. Doesn't reflect on the personality they have in the universe. - Star Guardians. *Star* Guardians. Guardians of the stars. You're telling me while they were making the skins, no-one asked why none of Kai'sa's team has any stars? - Kai'sa and Akali were chosen. Usually the legendary goes to whoever's VO would be unfitting. Jinx and Ahri are self explanatory. Xayah and Rakan make sense because not only would you get the most VO out of them- but it gives insight on what happened. Kai'sa could've easily kept her normal VO as someone 'changed' after encountering Zoe. Akali was already a tomboy badass. They didn't need VO. In fact if anyone deserved the legendary, it was Quinn (because she needs one) and Ekko. One of them doesn't even need new VO simply because they're obsessed with their bird in and out of SG. Most of the cast's VO is fine as is since they didn't stray or develop the characters in the damn universe. I want to also make it... clear- The Wild Rift side did it perfectly. We got our story continuation and a team that works with the skins in question. Xayah and Rakan are the focus. They are Green and Pink. Orianna is blue. Seraphine is orange. Senna is purple. This is following the season 1 and 2 guidelines. Why didn't we just get this for PC? No clue. Also their entire team... has stars. Not moons, crescents and shapes- *Stars.*
This is a great summary. The Madoka route would've been great for an influence, but they just went ham on it and it seems like they completely forgot these Guardians exist to protect works from invading monsters. By the way, I still want my void creature skins for them to fight. But between Neeko and her prestige skin messing most of the lore up initially, and 2019 being the year Riot overdid every single skinline as "X skin but corrupted", they really knew how to damper if not ruin one of the most well developed skinlines ever.
I swear like half the skin lines are just “there is good cosmic force and there is bad cosmic force” and they just do that for the first wave, then the second wave onward is just “what if a character was… both cosmic forces?!”
I do think that dawnbringer and nightbringer should've ran their course as a one-off skin line. While it was cool we got the God-kings as another vs event now the thematic is looking a bit too... for lack of a better word "Mobile Legends" for my tastes, especially with Yone... good god.
I love the robotic skins, but I have to agree on project getting retired for a while, there are so many other aesthetics within robots that you could pull from besides Cyberpunk.
From what I've heard (which means it could be completely wrong), the overabundance of robot skins is largely just because Chinese players love them too damn much, and, you know, China's where the money is
As Necrit said, there is no new content in League of Legends. A couple of champs and literally hundreds of skins. That's the signs of a game that is dying and it's just trying to milk as much money as it can before disappearing. A billionaire company that feeds nothing to it's golden goose of a game. They even limited VGUs to ONE a year. A billionaire game company limited VGUs to ONE a year cause it's too much work apparently. Let that sink in.
i agree but i think certain champions still need to have a skin of one of those. darkstar tahm is a slam dunk. project yone. highnoon kayn, 10/10. corrupted star guardian villans o plenty. crystal rose sona. nightbringer/dawnbringer kayle. battlecast belveth. skins that should have been etc.
I want riot to add the wild rift (not seraphine tho lol, I love spite) and and LoR exclusive star guardian skins, Akshan (he was mentioned in the story) and maybe one more outer guardian, and THAT’S IT! you ALREADY HAVE dark star skins in that universe, that’s your new villains if you need them.
One good example of a (temporarily) retired skin line is the Blood Moon. They just kept on adding champs to that skinline even though they didn't quite elaborate the lore behind it. Just like Infernal, they can just keep on adding champs to this since it's just red and blue vfx over and over again. Luckily they changed things up and released Snow Moon which is definitely a fresh addition to this universe. Still disappointed that there's no legendary Blood Moon skin though. I hope that once they come back with the Blood Moon skins, they put more heart into it.
New video idea: Champions that were never put in the right skin line and others who were put into the very wrong skin line Let me suggest one pair: Should have: Senna in winterblessed; her kit has slow and root, and her ult has shield, so why not mix that with a cool icy vibe? Shouldn't have: Ornn in space groove, I mean, seriously?
im not an old play so i havent seen overused skinlines as much, but what i wish they did more is meme skins like corporate mundo.i main kled so i hope he gets a skin like that then i might spend money on game
I'm surprised Blood moon isn't there. I love Blood moon and what They did with snow moon. But at this point they've got so many I'd wait like 3 years for it to come back. I'd they did another batch of snow moon fine but like Blood moon needs a rest.
I liked Star Guardians but they seriously oversaturated them quick. Like the story would have been great if the focus was on Lux’s team, with maybe a few villains and side characters. But it feels like they’ve completely lost focus. Lux’s team who were SUPPOSED to be the main characters, is practically irrelevant. Now it’s all about Ahri, and Miss Fortune, and Xayah, and Rakan, and Kai’Sa, and Akali.
The OG five Star Guardians are fine and deserve the spotlight. The rest (Ahri, Kaisa, etc), are just fillers who are there so Rito can take care of their pretty mansions.
I used to LOVE high noon. But now it feels like all of them hate that they have to do western themes and they just wanna be cool devil/infernal 2.0. Nothing wrong with keeping the skin line grounded.
A proper disclosure here fellas (since I don't think I explained it very well):
By RETIRING a skin I am not saying to cancel it forever, more so to give the skinline a break for awhile - not only so it feels exciting when they DO return, but also to make room for new skinline ideas as well as potentially reviving some old ones that haven't seen the light of day in some time.
The later of which will be the subject of next week's video >:)
Sounds like someone doesn't like their league account! Don't talk about taking mother riots profits away
Then why say retire...?
i am sorry you had to look up what a protogen was.
i can't even google pokemon images of any sort anymore. aatrox is fighting the wrong battle,
I love and respect you Nicky... but if they retire SG I'm about to throw hands. We know what happened with each of the guardians in 2022 EXCEPT Lux, we don't know what Syndras entire deal is, the other guardians in Zoes team...etc
My biggest wish is for the guardians to defeat the darkness once and for all, Zoe (and others) gets fully uncorrupted and Harp *somehow* comes back( shed also make a cool LoL character).
I'm sorry for my rant and if you read all of this - thank you, whoever you are.
He could be a professor at their school in lore who needs a wheelchair to get around and needs a machine to help him breathing because of an injured lung or something.
femboys sell better apparently
@@abowlofrice1245 i, as a member of the gay comminity as a bi male say we need some "Gem" action
Dw he got spacegroove 🤡
Bruh I always forget about night bringer and dawn bring 🤣
I agree, the demon route is always so repetitive. They did the exact same thing with the crime city/mafia skins which used to be all gangsters and mobsters but now it has demons too, like why??
They can’t even do the heaven or hell Yeehaw thing right. How does rell not get a Highnoon skin but Leona even gets a horse in hers? I’m almost convinced that when they’re not just filling out the quota fi popular character gets X skin, they’re throwing darts at the board for the rest of them.
High Noon Jhin was great because it was just OG Jhin's concept. It's one of the best designed skins imo
the fact they didn't think to give a sawed-off shotgun to Swain's arm baffles me
I think your definition of “Retiring” in the context of these skin lines single-handedly saved a lot of your takes.
Nah, it's not oversaturation, it's just lack of creativity to explore new lines
Star Guardian are just boring af now
@@lasterman94100 those aren’t mutually exclusive things. In fact, I would argue that Oversaturation is caused by a lack of creativity. You wouldn’t call a game or movie genre oversaturated if every game or movie in that genre is unique and interesting.
@@eloquence_4143 well by using your logic, I wouldn't call an anime skinline bad if it was new and unique yes, the star guardian is a rendition of old school magical girl, it had its time under the sun, now it's time to be creative and explore other anime tropes among the thousand there are instead of releasing more and more waifu material with boring color schemes
Star guardian, like many other themes, should have been one or two of, not recurring over the years, because they lost their uniqueness in the process, it should retire for good this time (but of course it won't because it's free money for rito with all the suckers that would buy any skinline anyway)
Don't forget that this year, on top of getting only THREE champs that were actually planned for 2022 and a rework, we also got:
-No Skarner news
-No promised Ahri ASU
-No Void event
-A Star Guardian event with a 500 RP skin of ultimate spellbook
-Only 10 short stories and a comics, with a third of the short stories being stuff delayed from last year, which still had 17 stories. Although to be fair we also had a book on the Ruination. Last year's event.
But heh, hopefully that massive slowdown is either the sign that employees are being allowed to take their time in production and/or that the MMO is being worked on.
Not sure why you put the void event on that list. Nothing official was even hinted at was all speculation.
@@deityofcrystals maybe they expected an event for bel'veth's release?
@@mcbinladengames there really should have been an event for bel'veth's release, they literally made a whole animation about it that stemmed from the 2022 the call trailer, like it comes off like it was meant to be a big event that pushed the current lore of runeterra forward a bit, but instead riot literally gave star guardians a bigger event than what the void event should have been, an entirely separate universe that has essentially no hold or has anything to do with the actual main lore of runeterra got more of an event, that just doesn't make sense to me.
or that all of Riot's money has been put into skins.
There's an MMO?
@@GeneralSecura I was thinking more along the lines of Battlecast Hecarim, Thresh and maybe Sylas (to make up for Project Sylas)
Battlecast Yummi is a really fun idea though. I also like your idea of Voli.
I dont really care for the resistance skins much tbh. I just want cool ass Robots.
I have to disagree with your disagreement. Battlecast? More like battlemid
They wont stop it until the masterpiece: Battlecast Lux is finished.
Yes
i got almost all of the Spirit Blossom 1st gen skins, but i didnt get a single one of the 2nd gen, even tho Darius is/was the champ i have the most mastery on. It's incredibly mediocre, except for Sett because legendaries get a pass i guess
its probably one of my favorite skin lines, but i also agree
just give us a shen skin first
I think it's the same with the Bee skin line. It's quickly becoming oversaturated and unimaginative. But they still tend to be cute (for the most part) so it becomes a quick money grab instead of producing cool skins
I just need Corrupted skins for Nasus, Renekton, Azir and Xerath while Aatrox have his Ascended skin before he became a Darkin.
Wasn't Justicar Aatrox supposed to be his pre-corrupted appearance?
@@GeneralSecura Justicar was originally just an idea of "this is how people see him who idolize him as a hero" not necessarily a canon form. i think it's unlikely and Justicar is just a take on "holy warrior" but at least the original God Warrior look is a concept that they have a lot of freedom to explore
@@GeneralSecura Justicar Aatrox was released when he was in his pre-rework time before they reworked him changed the Darkin lore into:
Shurima Ascended gone PTSD in Icathia War and using blood magic to shape themselves, becoming Darkins
Honestly just give them an anime now. We see what Riot wants to do.
And Warwick, but again, irrelevant (mainly because I think warwick works a lot with this skinline)
Do I like this skin lines?
"what if champion but robot", but even knowing that, I still think it would be interesting to do something like this for Kayle, both to show an aspect of justice motivated by bias they learned themselves and to sorta criticize/show that Riot is self aware (with a touch of humour) how binar they wrote Kayle's base lore
also program skin got a really lit aesthetic imo
@@ayouneii3659 I think that can work really well, like a security drone going rogue. The only proble is what they said, we already have PROJECT Morde doing that
The only reason I would ever want to go back to Kanto, would be if they did a Black and White 2 style game where they bring in outside Pokémon, add new areas, continue the story, add new characters, that kinda of thing. And if they want to go the extra mile, we get a Johto post-game
that's just gen 2(gold/silver)
Came back to this video after Ashen Guardian Shen was announced. They finally understood what we wanted.
There is something good to this though, Riot knows their skin lines can get boring. That is why they have been updating old concepts.
Gothic -> Fright Night
High Noon (cowboys) -> High Noon (cowboys + angels and demons)
Groovy -> Space Groove
Crime City -> Crime City Nightmare
Arclight may get updated after Gothic and Infernal, since it ended up in last place.
Now, for the bad things...
Is Ocean Song meant to replace Pool Party? If so, it is a downgrade.
Dawnbringer/Nightbringer got ridiculous, but I came to share this realization:
Dawnbringer was already Arclight 2 and Nightbringer was Infernal 2, even the TFT team noticed that.
I think you'll be quite pleased with next week's video then :)
I can never forgive Riot for stopping Demacia Vice because it wasn't "cool" enough for people to buy them. The one skinline where it's not out of place for Lux, and they missed it.
@@J7T800 oh yeah that one, i thought it was such a nice skinline
There is a mod for nightbringer Lillia that changes her voice completely and makes it fit WAYYY better

@@GeneralSecura i can imagine IF cho ever gets a vgu his deep sea skin would be turned into one
Godzilla renekton
I'd actually love to see some of the World Ender skins coming back for monster and shape shifter champs like Skarner, Elise(like her LoR one) and Nidalee. Aztec style giant monsters just sound so cool.
I like that World Breaker Elise skin, I hope they put that on League soon
For Nightbringer Lillia, she should have gotten darker voice lines cause her normal lines are too timid for what she protrays
Personally for Star Guardians, I think they should maybe do like 2 new champs, but make "transformation" forms like Power Rangers upgrades, or just a powered up mode in general. Have these power ups for the MAIN team and write a story with it
That idea seems awesome with actually transforming champions. Sentai skins with Gnar, Nidalee, Elise, Kayn or Shyvana could be pretty sick, ngl.
I feel like Riot won't stop until EVERY single champ has an Star Guardian skin, because they know most of the fanbase can't get enough of pixels on magic girl outfits
"Bee skins can live on forever"
And a finger of the monkey's paw curled.
for the editor, at 7:23, where you corrected I'm assuming 'grey' to 'gray', both are right.
After all the bugs, we deserve a Bee Viego skin
Skinlines I'd like to see more champs being added:
Dark Omen (Noc, Kayle & Singed)
Demacia Vice
Papercraft
Mecha Kingdom
Program
Rift Quest
Shan Hai Scrolls
Festival Queen (Anivia)
Culinary Masters
Woad
Skinlines that could use a revamp/down time:
Heartseekers
Dragonslayers/mancers
Coven
Eclipse
Cosmic
Firecracker
Project
Pulsefire
Spirit Blossom
Star Guardians
Bewitching
I would KILL for new Demacia Vice skins. Whenever I play Lucian or Garen, those are the ones I pick. If they released some original synthwave songs alongside the new skins, I think I'd die of happiness.
Culinary Masters. Man, that made me wish for a Kebab Kalista and Pyke even more.
Add sewn chaos too! Me need the voo doo doll kalista
@@donnut4668 I don't think there's a lot of interesting things they can do with Sewn Chaos without giving the entire line a new look.
I think Riot should rebrand it from events to Skin Showcase Events..
Gwen not getting a Fright Night or Bewitching skin was a crime against humanity.
I'd rather have this effort put into making the game better and more fun
gotta hit me with my entire childhood of Sonic music like i didnt already do that this past 3 weeks
Might I recommend Freedom Planet for your nostalgic self? 👀
Unless you already know about it. In which case disregard my comment
*slaps roof of NickyBoi video* This bad boy can fit so much Freedom Planet 2 music being snuck into it.
"Why is Lillia a Nightbringer"
Because making evil skins for cute and/or nice champions is based as hell, they're so good.
I just want them to make another God Weapon skin (God Staff Jax, God Fist Lee...) we haven't seen that in forever and it's so well made
God Tongue TK.
Do it now, Rito.
God knife for Mundo
Goddess Scissor Gwen all the way.
Ashen Knights are confirmed to comeback in 2023 as new skinline event
As much as I LOVE star guardian you are 100% right. Riot needs to re-evaluate the actual point of this skinline instead of just putting a bunch of champions in the same outfit and acting like any of them actually have any impact on the overall story.
Battlecast can die after they make a legendary Battlecast Omega Bel'Veth.
Imagine how league would look like if they would focus on game more rather than skins
Man, the PROJECT SKINLINE could have such good designs. To me, they just have to stop releasing it every year, and come up with some good concepts and designs like the first time we got them. They feel unfinished to me, looking at you Bristle
You say more bee skins, twenty bucks says they’ll find a way to make Senna, Leona, lux, or Kai’sa in that skinline.
Kai’Sting or some shit-
I can see Senna and Lux.
Lux is just basic and easy to slap in any concept.
Senna can be the contrast between honeybees and wasps
Hated how in the last sg season we got they only focused the story around 2 characters, while the others were "hmmmmm yeassssss slayyy? Slayy"
I think they should make more lore skins. Like Sion before he became a revenant or Riven when she was fighting with Noxus.
I love the Lillia image that, it's normal Lillia saying Eep, and then nightbringer saying PEE
I wish there were more kaiju themed skins appart from the reworked Giant Enemy Crabgot skin
I don't have my Star Guardian Annie yet, so no, can't stop yet.
I hope for a Dark Star x Star Guardian crossover so all the magic girls (and 2 guys) have to face Space Brazil
There's actually three with the cassio one
Honestly they just need a line of men as star guardian. Taric, Sett, Braum, Gangplank, and Jhin could be an interesting lineup.
I would like to see more cyber pop skins. I think the light hearted high tech vibe is nice.
I'd actually like a good, dutiful Star Guardians vs chaotic, unsatisfied Star Guardians
Something they tried with Kai'sa and Akali. The good side being a team of 4 who are completely fulfilling the oath while the chaotic 4 search for ways to escape/break away from their Star Guardian fate.
For good: Kayle, Tristana, Caitlyn, Garen
Chaotic: Vex, LeBlanc, Lissandra or Zeri, Vi
Long live the Bee skin line, may Gnar be one of the next champions to get one ... (seriously it could be so cool)
the thing about high noon is that! there were good skins this year! tahm kench, leona, samira and twitch are brilliant! but they’re just lost in the mediocrity of “popular champion but in a flaming cowboy hat” (note: i still can’t tell high noon talon and varus apart)
NEW NICKOLAS J. BOIBERT VIDEO LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOO
This is finally a video. Editing was on point very funny.
Skarner vid
I support the Star Guardian bit, but not for the same reason:
I'm sure you've seen that one video floating around about how Madoka Magica really twisted the magical girl genre to an extent it can't come back from.
That's the point I'm trying to make, that's the TL;DR.
-
The thing about Star Guardians that was amazing skinwise- that somewhat just BAFFLES me that no-one else respects: It's a team skin.
For example, Ezreal and Lux carried Porcelain if it didn't sell well.)
(Also, Poppy was a high selling champion because she was recently reworked around this time.)
The idea is their personalities are shown not only through their design, but the color they're associated with.
(Trust me, it was the voice.)
(This is also when they decided that they always needed a familiar no-matter what.)
But it still sold so much, still only targeted giving skins to the champions who'd always sell skins.
(Lancer Paragon and Rogue came before this.)
Enter Season 4.
Who's gonna tell Nicky that Star Guardian hasn't had skins since like 2 years
Uh, did you miss the Star Guardian event that happened this summer? Had like 10+ skins attached to it?
@@GeneralSecura Before this year's event I meant, like we literally got nothing in between
I don't know what it is but I could listen to this guy talking about skins forever
We were supposed to have a battlecast Anivia with rockets and jet engines! It's on Creator Viktors recall :(
omg the sentence with the Protogen killed me xD
for anyone that is the fluffy space cyborg at 6:45
From what I've heard (which means it could be completely wrong), the overabundance of robot skins is largely just because Chinese players love them too damn much, and, you know, China's where the money is
i feel like ashen knight mordekaiser is actually a worthy candidate for it. i think there's a lot of potential if they just pick proper champions
Didn't expect a Young Justice reference in a league video
As Necrit said, there is no new content in League of Legends.
A couple of champs and literally hundreds of skins. That's the signs of a game that is dying and it's just trying to milk as much money as it can before disappearing.
A billionaire company that feeds nothing to it's golden goose of a game.
They even limited VGUs to ONE a year.
A billionaire game company limited VGUs to ONE a year cause it's too much work apparently.
Let that sink in.
start guardian is my favourite skinline but I 100% agree that they need to give it a rest for a good while
I'm glad you also had to learn what a protogen was like the rest of us
i agree but i think certain champions still need to have a skin of one of those. darkstar tahm is a slam dunk. project yone. highnoon kayn, 10/10. corrupted star guardian villans o plenty. crystal rose sona. nightbringer/dawnbringer kayle. battlecast belveth. skins that should have been etc.
Lets do a human skin line where champs just look like regular people
I want riot to add the wild rift (not seraphine tho lol, I love spite) and and LoR exclusive star guardian skins, Akshan (he was mentioned in the story) and maybe one more outer guardian, and THAT’S IT! you ALREADY HAVE dark star skins in that universe, that’s your new villains if you need them.
New video idea: Champions that were never put in the right skin line and others who were put into the very wrong skin line
Let me suggest one pair:
Should have: Senna in winterblessed; her kit has slow and root, and her ult has shield, so why not mix that with a cool icy vibe?
