  • @jimgibson-brown6701

I’m a bit old school and like to buy my cars too, mainly because I’m good at buying them but not so good at selling them, so tend to hang on to them for a long time - plus if you have a few the mileage is low on all of them. Really good deals are available on new cars so that has negated the initial depreciation to some degree so you’re not taking such a huge hit, and you only take that hit if you sell them. If I were to be a high mileage user, then I suspect my thinking would be entirely different. Everybody is different and you have to do what is right for you, I really enjoy your channel and how grounded you are, it makes your channel relatable and thus hugely enjoyable.

Enjoyed this video, that's real life and appreciate you sharing your thoughts. The GPs and GP2s that you see for big money, are on the whole standard and very low mileage, so as you said you don't want to be worrying about putting the miles on. I hope it's a JCW Clubman, I drove one last year on a Pistonheads road trip, totally impressed and would be interesting viewing to see you making a few mods.

Good morning my friend. Back on it again. I’m blown away at this very first vid of the catch ups. At the end of the day, you have to do what makes sense to you, no one else. Depreciation does kick a touch for sure. This is why I like you as a You Tube guy, but more importantly, as a personal friend, you are down to earth and you take life sensibly. It’s easy to lose £30,000, it takes a hell of a long time to get it back, simple as that. You’ve done the sensible life choice. I’m only a few days behind ya lol.

Understand the decision, Pete. I get your reasons and it must've been a tough call given your love for the brand.
As others have said, the JCW Clubman sounds a great compromise and I'm sure I've even read its 0.2sec quicker. Either way, the same power train and you've experienced it in the Clubman and M135i.
It will be interesting to see what you've picked. One thing is for sure there will be many days ahead when you review the GP and see one on the odd occasion where you'll always think 'what have I done' but you never know, the day may still come to acquire a nesrly new one at a great price in a year or so.

Not tempted to give up my GP2 for an automatic, front wheel drive, that’s slower to 60 mph than the Clubman. I was further convinced when I saw only one GP2 for sale in the US. Europe, on the other hand, has a bunch of them available. What’s going on?

Completely understand and respect your decision. I had the same back and forth thoughts before I purchased my new GTI TCR. I'd never owned a new car before but knew I wanted that particular car. The appeal of spec'ing it to how I wanted, being the first owner and again, knowing it was "sort of" a limited run, I still went ahead. And I try not to think too much about the depreciation 😳 At the end of the day, you only live once but everyone has their reasons to why they should or shouldn't commit. Looking forward to the next video of your new car 👍🏻😁

Not a good day for Mini - we’re just back from our Mini dealership where we cancelled our electric Mini (SE) which we’d had on pre-order since July 5th last year (at Goodwood FOS - before the official launch). Nah bro, good call. Would have absolutely been a fun car but not much compared to what you have. My best friend/roommate bought his wife a new toyota suv since they have a kid now, so I bought her base model r56 mini cooper off them since my old buick was finally on it's last leg. After driving the mini for a month I said "jesus, for base model NA car, that's loads of fun! I can't wait to start modding it!" He looked at me funny and asked "why don't you just trade it in for a newer higher end model?" and I laughed and said "the last thing I need is to daily drive a race car on top of payments, I'm not made of money, but I CAN go pick up a 20 year old Civic for $3k to be the backbone daily driver while I shop for a used K24 to drop in the mini" He says "that sounds like it costs just as much over time" I said "maybe, but it shouldn't if I'm doing most of the work, shopping the deals, waiting for the right buys, and no matter what happens I'll have a super cheap and easy to fix car to fall back on, rather than fighting warranties and rent car coverage, waiting for part deliveries etc. if my only car is a brand new performance car. At the end of the day, I will always have my own car to drive. It's not about how much fun I can afford up front, it's about what makes sense long term. If I have 2 cars, then car trouble won't interfere with my job as long as I make sure at least one of them is reliably operational."
You do what makes sense for your situation, everything else is details.

The right choice is the one you have to live with yourself mate. While I miss my old JCW it was not practical enough for daily/family life and it was starting to bug me. Given that mythical 10 car garage and an open budget things would be different and we'd never have to compromise. From the looks of the video ending I have a sneaky feeling you aren't going to regret this decision one bit fella. Best of luck with the new beasty when it arrives!

I hear you (though thought you were going to go for an electric version instead)... It is your down to earth-ness that makes you channel so enjoyable / different from those "other" YB-ers (in the future you can imagine a load of supercars for sale under the "failed you tuber" catagory 🤣🤣🤣. As for depreciation, I hear you, and knew it would come for me, but I had to get rid of it earlier than planned, and so had all that pain 18 months after purchase! (6-figures).... Kinda no regrets, but the next one will be "pre-owned" (sorry, living in the US too long!). Keep up the great work.

I understand your decision and I'm grappling with the same issue. The more I think about what I'll be giving up, it's not a sound decision to get my GP. I will miss my heated seats, sound deadening, AWD, 6 speed standard shift and all the comfort options I now have. If they made a 2 door mini JCW AWD with 306hp. I'd take that in a heartbeat over the GP.

I did also have my deposit down about a year ago. Got excited, and very much like you, I started to doubt myself in getting it, for slightly different reason than yours, it was more about the every day ride I would get. I Could not believe that I was told by Sytner in Oldbury just before Christmas that I could have one. But end of January I cancelled mine, went for a new Audi TT, which I do not regret in the slightest, I am more happier that I have bought the TT. I’ve always said that if I put £1000’s in the bank and after 1,2,3 years the bank manager said ‘I’m afraid that the £50,000 you deposited is...um..well er, only worth £32,000’ you’d go ballistic. That’s why new cars are such a poor investment especially as reliability on used cars is so much better these days. I bought a ‘66 plate’ JCW Convertible that was about 6 months old that had all the ‘packs’ on and I saved over £10000 on list. If I’d been the previous owner I’d have wept.

Don’t worry TGE’s will be for sale in less than 6 months.😆😆. People don’t generally follow a car channel to see a specific car. It’s more the genre of cars and vehicles and the way it’s presented to the viewers which keeps people watching. There’ll be other cars, and we’ll still be watching.👍

Assume you haven't bought another new car and just something different but used? If so, I think you made the right decision. New cars are great but such a bitter depreciation laden pill to swallow! Its actually refreshing to hear a youtuber talk honestly about not wanting to lose money unnecessarily. Hats of to you for the honest video and I hope the new car is as good as the Mini GP would have been. Keep up the good work!

Your being totally honest with yourself. You have to go with how you feel and not be ruled by what would be good for your channel when at the end of the day it wouldn’t be good for you personally, and it most certainly wouldn’t be practical. It’s a nice car to have I grant you but good on you for your honesty and I look forward to your big reveal on Thursday. I wish you many many years of safe motoring in your new car.

If practicality is a worry you have absolutely done the right thing. I had a GP2 and sold after 2 years of ownership as no good for anything other than single life. And in terms of market value, they don't hold their value as much as youd think. Mine had very very low mileage (under 1000) and got almost no extra for it. Enjoy your new car whatever it is, life's too short!

The first brand new car I ever bought was a Mini Cooper, in red with white bonnet stripes and roof, I absolutely loved it... that was in 1993 and I’ve only ever bought two new cars since. It’s normally not a financially astute move!

Ok, you certainly made the right decision ... I've owned 7 late model Minis .... one of which was a JCW Cab and two original GPs. GP1s, if you will, are brilliant .. raw, supercharged, light , small .... wonderful cars and I enjoyed every minute with mine . When the GP2s came out I thought they were too big, overweight and covered in "Ricky Racer" graphics that I thought were tacky to say the least. I had thought about buying one but the moment I saw it on the showroom floor I passed.
When I saw the GP3 Concept car online I was blown away ... I thought that if Mini brought that design into production I would be a serious customer. They didn't and I'm not!
Many journalists who have driven the car have stated, repeatedly, that it misses the mark. One went so far as saying "it could have been a contender but it's not". At the price Mini is asking I think the car will be a financial failure for them.
The 2013 GPs were priced at $39,500 I believe ... 4 months after they arrived at Mini dealers I had three dealers, that I had done previous business with, call me and offer new GPs, that were still on their showroom floors, for low $30s ... they simply couldn't sell them,.
I 'm sure that will be the case with the GP3s. You made the right choice. The R53 GPs are still holding their values as far as I can see ... I just sold my GP with 44,000 miles on it for $20K , not bad for a 14 year old Mini.

I think you made the right decision, I kind of got the feeling a little while back you weren’t absolutely certain about the GP3. Changed my mind about my GP3 order back in October when I was lucky enough to see a couple of the 2020 launch cars undisguised and had some info about the options (like you I like HUD and also like HK as my GP3 was going to be a road trip / show car and not a trackday tool). Kept the order in place at Marshalls as long as possible just in case I won the lottery .... But instead I decided to go Mulgari ICON02 and by the time that is the complete package (its only cosmetically there atm as issues with mapping OPF cars) I think it will be comparable real world performance compared with a GP3 but my way of getting there. Oh and the only thing I will say about your "new" MINI is I drove it ...

  • @Karlos-bh9zk
    @Karlos-bh9zk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm with you Ped. If you have doubts, then it's not for you. I personally think the plough front (sorry, wheel arches) would be a big issue, as I commented on one of your previous videos. Also I think the lack of a manual gearbox, for those fun time drives, was playing on your mind to start with perhaps?
Prediction.... Mini Clubman JCW! You had a great opportunity of a 3 month test drive, so you know what to expect, plus Mrs Petrol Ped loved it.
