I was diagnosed a few years ago after living in survival mode for a decade because I was too terrified to seek help. I tried therapy (consistently going), and SSRIs, but neither helped. A lot of days I’d end up frozen on my apartment floor, too scared to leave. But.. because I could still go to work (my usual 2 days a week), my GP and psychiatrist both said I was doing fine, and they weren’t particularly understanding when I asked about benzos (I only asked for 1mg tablets for the days when I had trouble leaving the house, but I got the “they’re a habit forming drug” lecture; obviously I know that, but also though… it would be nice to be able to leave my apartment more lol). I mention all of this because this year I finally found a psychiatrist who really understands PTSD, and also a clinical psychologist with extensive trauma therapy experience… and it’s been a game changer. In January I had an active suicide plan and life truly felt like it wasn’t worth living… For anyone who might be in that same place or headed there, I promise you it can get better… If you can find medical professionals who have a special interest in trauma/PTSD, they can help so much. I found an amazing GP by selecting one just because his website profile said his area of interest is psychiatry. It can be a gamble and you might end up with a few people who don’t *get* it.. but please don’t give up, because once you find even one support person (GP, psychiatrist, or psychologist) who genuinely cares and believes you when you say you need help… it can make life feel like it’s worth living again… or in the very least, it can make it feel like maybe you don’t need to give up on life just yet.. I promise it can get better💗
I get confused about the nightmare symptom. I have diagnosed ptsd and I have all kinds of sleep problems: avoiding sleep, feeling terrified when I wake up, sleeping too long or too often, unable to be waked etc. But I don't really have nightmares. My therapist suggested that I might be having nightmares that I forget. I don't know what to do with that information. Could you speak about the nightmare symptom in more depth?
It's tough when it comes from multiple events that all happened pretty sequentially. Then the trauma that comes from dealing with the drug scene just adds to it even if you don't realize it at first. Tough to get a gun in your face every day and not eventually realize "hey, I think I should've been scared at that moment but I don't remember being scared." Just realizing they coulda decided they didn't trust me at any point and they coulda blown my brains on the doorstep at any moment
Just discovered your Chanel tonight and I’m loving your stuff. Very educational and it’s always interesting learning about psychological happenings and the way our minds work. I’ll be sure to stick around and subscribe. Keep up the great work mate
Can you do a video on substance abuse - how substances impact neurotransmitters; best treatments for harm minimization/relapse prevention :) love your videos!
There’s also an effective treatment for some of us who suffer called EMDR therapy- I found it to be helpful for my cPTSD. I’m enjoying your videos - you have very good presentation skills. Are you going into Psychiatry?
PTSD- those that experience trauma resulting in functional impairment afterwards Trauma is in the eye of the beholder As of PTSD You need to have experienced trauma- witnessing, happened to you or heard about it Psychological symptoms- flashbacks, nightmares and unwanted bad memories- intrusive sx Behavioural sx- avoidance Low mood and irritability Sx need to last for at least one month Causes- a mix of biopsychosocial factors, fundamental cause is Trauma Treatment- exposure psychotherapy, group therapy, SSRI like fluorexetine, benzodiazepine, sleep meds Substance use disorder is a common comorbidity- treat
What are your thoughts regarding some believing you don't have to talk about your trauma. That you just have to learn how to calm the nervous system through somatic work?
