    I really enjoyed your review, thank you! I've had my stove for about 3 years now, and have never had any problems with it. It's my only stove on backcountry canoe trips here in Ontario, and I've never had any problems fueling it..I confess I do take a couple of ziplock bags of wood pellets in case of rain. It's an impressive design and so much better than having to worry about fuel cannisters.

    The best way to fuel the biolite (have owned and used one for a long time) is to chop your biomass into small chunks, pack fairly stoutly into the canister, just below the uppermost air ports.
    Light and burn from the top down as it is a gasifier stove, and you will have a burn that lasts easily 30 mins.
    Remember, gasifier burn efficiency top down. Not bottom up.

    • @maxman1244
      @maxman1244 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you burn from the bottom up, you greatly decrease your burn time and efficiency.
      Also, as you experienced, a bottom up burn produces a taller, more uncontrolled flame

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've burned from top down using pellets. But find bottom up easier to light and lasts long enough for whatever I'm cooking. I'll experiment with it!

    • @maxman1244
      @maxman1244 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StephenJReid I can absolutely agree with that lol, unless I bring a dedicated fire starter or my tiny pen torch (perfect for lighting my biolite) top down can be a hassle to light lol
      I've found that after loading, pulling out the middle stick, shredding the ends and lighting it works best!

      kinda non-sense about gassifer stove, all wood stoves are 'wood gas' stoves.
      All wood flames are wood gas derived through pyrolysis, any flames from combustible is wood gas, so it makes no sense to call it a wood gas stove. It is just a stove with an electric fan that feeds more air.
      The "Wood gas stoves" terminology that are specifically called that are just stoves with analog heated chimneys that draw more heated air in. They would be more accurately named "air tunnel stoves", but that name doesn't sell very well compared to 'wood gas stove'.
      The only issue with burning bottom up is too much wood gas produced at once for air to come in, rather than loading everything to burn at once, it is far better to only burn at 1/3 to 1/2 full at any time, lighting from below, and then adding small amounts of fuel as needed, each new block adding a few minutes of 'wood gas' to burn.
      By lighting from top, you essentially reduce the heated chimney effect as only the very top of the chimney is heated, rather than a longer depth compared to burning from lower, resulting in a smokey and inefficient fire for much longer til the heated chimney is established (i.e. burning til more than half the load is on fire)

      A kitchen scale is only like $10-12 and you can measure how many grams per boil/ use of fuel. You can easily calculate how many uses you'll get from a canister with a simple calculation. I know with the windmaster + heat distribution pot it's only about 7 grams per 2cup/ 500ml boil, so ten grams per boil will give you a generous buffer. Figure one boil for every hot meal/ hot drink. Easy peasy.

    I think it's worth the money and I think it's also worth the space without the grill when you consider the space that fuel canisters and a cooking pot take up the only major negative for it is how heavy it is. For me, I think the little bit of extra weight is worth the convenience.

    I backed the biolite back when it was a kickstarter, so I've had mine since about 2012 I think. You 100% can fill it before and then you no longer need to constantly feed it. When I'm just using it at home I basically fill it to the brim with pellets and use some cardboard or newspaper to get it started and that will run for close to 45 minutes with no upkeep.
    Just came back from a camping trip and was still too lazy to chop wood so I ran to the local grocery and bought a bag of hickory wood chips. So not only is it a lack of work there but the fire is essentially flavored at that point. First night we did mexican rice and hamburgers, biolite cookpot running on high until it boils then stop feeding it for the 20-ish minutes to simmer. Then throw on the grill and go as hot and as fast as possible to get a good char on the burgers.

      After bringing water to boil, you can cook on the closed feeding door while grilling. I cut to shape grilling mat to saute veggies, about 2/3 grill surface....
      For solo, or couples lightweight, ditch the grill & kettle... 8in ultra non-stick skillet w/straining lid will do it all. (Not ultralight, but super practical)

Those poor people in 3rd world countries always get help with money, freebies and the new good stuff thrown at them by companies and charaties a world away while the poor and homeless in their own 1st world country freeze their asses off in the dark at night!
      Be really nice if a company looked out their window to find the needy instead of to what's a tear jerker on TV and cool for celebs elsewhere.

    I’ve been using the same Biolite 2 with grill. I bought 2 since I was cooking a ton for my family + one more adult (4 to 6 people) about 3 to 4 times a week. I have been using Biolite’s pellets as they were on a big time sale a while back (but I’m running low now and I can’t find them right now in Canada during the pandemic). I find the pellets are extremely convenient to get cooking right away and very predictable if I keep my settings consistent for each cook. I can cook two large pork chops, hot dogs and boil water on one session and maybe even more as I jack up the fan to burn out the rest of the pellets. I was able to buy a huge bag of pellets from Amazon that was even cheaper, but I’ll get around to using twigs and branches when people aren’t so pandemic aware (people get weird AF when they see you looking for branches in the forest). Lastly, I just received my Trangia triangle that you can put on top of the Biolite so my cast iron pan is raised higher for stability and less of a hot spot in the middle of the pan, followed by being able to add more fuel without lifting up the pan. Dutch ovens also fit a lot better.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pork chops are amazing on it, also lamb chops, rib eye steaks, burgers, sausages. Love the smoke flavour. I’ve been burning a combination of pellets and dead wood I process myself.
      Have you mastered the art of keeping it alight? I had it go out and go very smokey a couple of times but got the hang of it now.

    • @BWT599
      @BWT599 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen J Reid Yah funny you should ask. After cooking lunch using the grill and cast iron pan, I serve up the food but I want the flame to keep going so I can heat up some marshmellows for my young kids (but I want them to finish lunch). I got the kids to gather some sticks and followed your advice (I’m also looking at getting a saw and knife, what brand do you have for the Saw and Knife?). I added some sticks to the half burnt pellets and I got the over heating alert on one of my biolites so it eventually turned off and adding any more fuel to it was just going to make the situation worse in terms of maybe overheating the battery. So right now as it’s still a very hot summer, I’m trying to master how to add fuel without making it way too hot.

Great for family cooking and once you get the hang of the fan and how it burns, you have a marvelous system. Love the fact it burns clean, pellets, twigs, paper, leaves, or any biomass you can find, charges my phone at end of the day - and depending on how long I am out - overnight versus a couple of days - its benefits far outweigh its drawbacks.

      @grinninggoat5369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol, I and other people have built many versions of cheap, nonelectric gassifiers that don't smoke.
      All it takes is a good gassifier design and attention to detail and you can make them from soda cans to paint buckets with no smoke and no powered blower.
      If I wanted a good, cheap, compact way to charge a cell phone and a no smoke, high heat cook source I would go with a well built gassifier made from used cans and buy a seperate small hand crank or solar charger pack for much, much less money than the item in the video.
      If even just the fan breaks on that in the video there is no charging and always smokey fire because the electric fan does more than fan the flame, it cools the cold side of the TEG element. If the fan doesn't work, the TEG won't produce enough power or possibly even overheat the internal circuitry in plastic housing & die during prolonged use. Then all you have is an expensive, always smokey inefficient fire pot with a detachable papwerweight mounted on its side.

    Thank you for the thorough review! What would you think of using this as an emergency home cooking device? Not indoors, of course, but maybe in the back yard or under a patio awning?

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve used it for cooking at home more than while camping. It’s great when I can’t be bothered waiting on the charcoal BBQ. Can be cooking on the grill in about 5mins (excluding wood prep).
      I’ve cooked steaks, lamb chops, pork chops, burgers, sausages etc.
      Just as long as everyone likes the wood fire taste, I love it, but not everyone does.

She wants the fire pit and base camp stove!!!!! Donations gladly accepted for wife’s video reviews of any/all biolite items. She is seriously biolite obsessed, it gets her hot and gets me cooking. #Bioliteloveya

  • @kellykelly2052

    Sebastien, when you put the Kelly kettle on top did you have to fill that with fuel also or did you just use the heat coming from the biolite? I was torn between the Kelly and this but if you can use both together I would probably do that.

    Excellent review. Not sure if it’s worth the money, could probably do the same with a cheap disposable bbq. But it is cool. P.S. You made a horlicks of the horlicks.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but a disposable BBQ doesn’t look as cool as this 😂 Yeah I didn’t even drink the horlicks in the end, set it down for a min after the fire went out and was cold and full of flies when I came back. 😬

    • @DavidDoyleOutdoors
      @DavidDoyleOutdoors 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stephen J Reid I agree it’s cool, I may eventually get one with the grill as I do like my gadgets and tech. 8 mins is really fast for 1 litre using just wood, on par with gas. Liked the VFX at the beginning, I really should learn more aftereffects stuff.

    The only part that seems odd to me is the lack of igniter. It's already got an electric power source there, why not have a heating element or electric lighter built in for ignition? Just seems like a wasted opportunity to get more out of the battery.

  • @alanrobinson2229
    @alanrobinson2229 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So
    How'd this compare to the lofi?

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on needs. The Biolite is quite a bit larger so can burn more fuel and has a very versatile range of accessories. The LOFI suits my needs much better as it’s about 1/8th the weight of the biolite. I’ve never taken the biolite camping because of its weight.
      I found in practise the power generation of the Biolite was quite slow to charge anything

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha, no offense at all, I love that sequence myself! I planned, filmed and edited it before I shot anything else. I just wanted to experiment with a really nicely shot "bushcraft" montage. I was considering making a much longer video that you could just kick back and relax watching. No music, just well planned shots & sound design. Think that would be a good idea?

    I have owned the Biolite stove (an older model) some years ago. My take: it is NOT worth the money. There is still a lot of smoke despite the blower. Secondly the quality of the grill attachment is poor.
