Between vanilla and Royal, I have done 11 playthroughs of Persona 5. Despite that, I have never removed Ryuji from my party for more than a single palace per playthrough. So I'd say I like him quite a bit.

He’s a great teammate with decent electric moves to supplement his primary physical movesets with sone decent buffing moves (even if I have a hard time actually using them becatse I’m horrible at team building) Plus instakill Personally I don’t really have a set team and tend to swap around based on the fight or the SP levels
It’s Ryuji who actually goes through the hero’s journey. Accidentally stumbles into the Metaverse, finds a purpose, purpose goes to his head, the villain strikes back, learns from his mistakes and defeats the villain, reflects on his journey and becomes a better person.
Yeah Japan is very different culturally Hell it also affected futaba’s paksce since her mother not hating her was supposed to be a shocking twist because in Japan bastards are commonly despised by there parents abd have less rights

That beint said, Ryuji and Junpei are literally top 10 persona characters imo, such loyal and truly organic bros they are for the MC. 🙏
I found quite funny when he strolls back in after presumably meeting his demise, I found the timing almost comedic, however upon reflection, I think it would have been much nicer if Ann hugged him, however getting slapped in attacked by the group does seem to be more fitting for their characters imo.
You can’t exactly blame ryuji for the okumera stuff He did say it was a good target so they decided to check it out and could be over excited about taking down corruption but okumera was chooses by far more factors The poll was rigged by the SUI, the Hawaii trip peaking there interest in there presence, the Morgana shit that lead to the haru shit and the robot representation of the employees
While I love Ryuji's portrayal in everything post Shido's Palace (including spinoff games) I can't forgive him for his awful behavior in the first half of the game. His constant rudeness (especially to Morgana and a lesser extent Ann), his constant loudmouthed shouting, and his constant irresponsible complaining about how he wants popularity and acknowledgement for being a Phantom Thief rather than just being satisfied with his deeds... I appreciate him, and I like him a lot more thanks to the expanded universe of P5 but ughhh his behavior is so grating and irritating and constantly upsetting... and him and Morgana being the catalyst for the worst part of the game (chasing after Morgana pre-okumara palace) ... I just can't.
His rudeness is a little understandable, wanting proper attention for being the "good guys" who do the jobs that the police couldn't do. I'm sure most teenagers would happen to agree with him in this scenario. But you're right about his behavior being far better after he gets a wake up call. He just seems to be a realistic portrayal of a bro and I have to commend ATLUS for writing him in such an accurate way
The popularity thing is annoying but apart from that I don’t agree Yes the Morgana shit is bad but honestly it’s primarily Morgan as fault he’s the one constantly starting shit and left because he feels his position is threatened because he’s no longer a navigator and refuses to remember that he’s still the primary healer not mskoto who’s the mixed support tank
Haven't watched but just gonna say that no he's not. He has no reason to be on the team, which the game admits in canon when it cuts to Sae. Can only say "you must have been working with someone". All he brings to the team is being on the team compared to everyone else. He wasn't even your first ally, that was Morgana He always blows cover by yelling about being the phantom thieves and is just annoying And the major sin of his vanilla instakill. It actively punished the player by activating constantly and have no exp money or items. Just a persona if you had a spot in your roster which was unlikely unless you just did fusions. Royal did a 180 to correct it but the damage was done and he is too deeply stained by it
Bro really said "I didn't watch it" lmao. Either way, Ryuji just adds something to the team that really nobody else has, that being the unfiltered raw emotion and great companionship. Also, don't factor in gameplay into a character analysis.

Yosuke > ryuji. Overall in persona 4, all the friendships feel much more natural than in persona 5. In p5, you are almost forced into it.
