A great start to get my Pico W up and running. As a retired engineering lecturer I really do appreciate the detail and the complete steps given, so many other lessons gloss over the "bits" one really needs to know. Many thanks and I have subscribed 🙂
Thanks for watching and your feedback. I am retired too from a career as a statistician in the engineering and sciences areas. These videos are my retirement journey in learning electronics and robotics. Not even close to an expert but I do enjoy trying to explain things in plain language. If I can explain it on a video that means that I have learned the material reasonably well. Cheers!
Thanks for the compliment but I have to admit, I am not a trained engineer. I am a retired statistician. I am enjoying learning electronics as a hobby. Thanks for subscribing and watching!
Tried to figure out why is my program not working for 3 hours but this video helped me to figure it out in 10 mins! Feeling happy and glad that you made this video!
Thanks for this nice video, I’m glad it popped up in my iTunes feed this morning. I’m glad you started with the soldering of the headers. Frankly I bought a pico with the headers on already because while I have soldered in the past, I’m intimidated by it. I think I’ll try again. As for editors, I started with Mu, and I really like it. I use it for my Microbit, adafruit boards and playing around with python. I’m just a retired novice having fun learning.
I am retired too and started learning electronics over a year ago. Mu is a fine editor - whatever works for you! I am still trying to improve my soldering skills. You just have to jump in and be OK with making a few mistakes. Thanks for watching!
This is super useful, subscribed! Ordered a Pico W today because it was available, but was all at sea regards header pins and installing micro python … you guided through the process so completely and helpfully (you could easily have left out a step in the process in assuming knowledge of this or that, but I’m very grateful you didn’t 😊)
Love Love Love your video. So simple to follow. I am hitting the subscribe and a thumbs up I has already selected before. Thank you for your time. God bless and have a great day.
Subscribed. Been setting up a Raspberry Pi "lab" and tools for electronics (breadboards, resistors, soldering...) recently and I wanted to include a bit of Pico W at some point.
wow i like you the you teach is clam clear stredie remind me of a shcool teacther like you are the 1 person on here that i really under stood the way you speak very slow and very detailed not like you was in a rush to go some were i got a bunch of boards the pico iv had for two years and havent been able to do anything but thank you for being a wonderful teacher so you now have a new sudent and fan of your channel i hope to learn more from you i have all kinds of unos r3 heltec wifi boards even just got a lilygo with like 4 diffrent chips and a pico in it like that one is the koolest
Well presented ! From my experience you can use label 'LED' with oridinary Picos (aka non-PicoW) as well. I did stumble over that when trying to run the same code on both Pico and PicoW recently
You only press the boot select button when you want to load micropython on it. You would do this again if you want to upgrade to a newer version of micropython. For programming, just plug it in. Thanks for watching!
one extra step I do before soldering is to rub the contacts lightly with a fine emery cloth or other light abrasive to remove a layer of oxidation on the solder tabs. that really makes the solder flow better. also .8mm 37/63 solder but I also use a lot of 60/40 multicore solder and have no problem using it instead of 37/63.
Yes - you just need to set up both the internal LED and the external LED. The next couple of episodes in my pico series show how to set up external LEDs.
No matter what I try [reload, restart, reinstall, change cable] my Pico does not show up on the drives. It did initially but now a day later it doesn't. Any guidance please? BTW Win11 and all up to date. VPN off ... NO sign on device manager ports either. Help!
I don't use Windows so I am not in a good position to help. Most issues folks have are with the USB cables. You mention you changed the cable and it did work the day before. Do you have a raspberry pi? You could try to work with the pico on that and see if it shows up on the RPi. OR if you have access to a second computer to give it a try on that one. Of course - it is possible that the pico is bad - somehow got "fried" when you were working on it the day before. They are pretty cheap so getting a second one to work with might also be helpful to diagnose issues like this. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Thank you so much. An engineer talking like an engineer to budding engineers. Suscribed! (From a 71 yr old Engineer)

Thanks Lori! This video was very helpful and well outlined. I was excited when ordering my pico starter kit, but nervous when it arrived lol.
Good Luck! It is a fun development board. Thanks for watching!
awesome video! really helped me connect the dots as to what was happening throughout the process.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!

Nice video! Simon Monk is quickly becoming my favorite author. He writes a lot of good books on programming and electronics.
Thanks for watching!
Quite helpful, thanks

I will have to give that I try. It has been ages since I played with the internal LED. Thanks for watching!
Great stuff. I am surprised you don't have more subscribers,
I am just really starting to make reasonable videos. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much! I wonder next time we plug in the device, do we always have to hold bootselect while plugging it in?

Nice solder tip! Thanks for watching!
Is it possible to blink the on board LED and an external LED also?
Yes - you just need to set up both the internal LED and the external LED. The next couple of episodes in my pico series show how to set up external LEDs.
Great tutorial 👌
