For what it’s worth, there is no better watch to buy vintage than Seiko. For some reason they are a million times easier to bring back up to original spec than most vintage watches. I think Seiko at the time were keen on making watches one could in theory wear forever. I’ve got a 6139 from 1973 after service runs within 3 seconds per day and has passed a full 70m pressure test. Worn it daily including swimming at the beach, biking, etc and never had any issue. I’d go vintage 9 times out of 10
Don't agree. then how many you got and why. So you can run down and get a service? Do you wear vintage more than 5 percent of the time? And this model worth nothing. (Not talking vintage rolex here.) 30 dollar watch that the lume is done, scratched up, needs a 2 or 300 dollar service. It dont make sense unless this is grandpa's watch or something personal. Unless you just want the 30 dollar watch.

I would go for the new one, because I’d want to wear it lots, but the old one is still very cool. If I still run that well in 55 years I’ll be a happy man!
Assuming it's still around when I'm ready in the next month or two, I'll *definitely* go for the reissue: Seiko went to the trouble of recreating the period-correct case and same-size stem (though some have complained that it's somewhat more-difficult to manually wind as a result), and between that and the asking price, I have nothing to complain about. As far as the crystal is concerned, you might have noticed that your friend's OG example has only suffered a wee bit of cloudiness in all its years of existence; from my experience, the new example's Hardly crystal will do just fine.
As a watchmaker, and a vintage Seiko admirer, the amplitude of the old model is very low. It should be sitting at just about 220° for old Seikos. The lift angle would change the amplitude slightly, but being that low, it’s a sign of the oils and greases being well passed their used by date. The lubricants will have evaporated, and are now an abrasive. The new watch also has a very low Amplitude. Was it wound up well? I’d expect a new Seiko movement to sit around 250°. Most basic Miyota movements often show 300° or slightly more. 😂 you have to laugh at the limited editions Seiko create. At least you don’t have line ups like some artificially limited plastic… Sorry, bioceramic watches. 😂 Looks wise, it’s stunning. I love 60s and 70s Seiko. I’m wearing a Sportsmatic dresser I restored myself.
Seiko and limited editions: Nothing is limited and everything is limited. I fell in love with a Baby Alpinist and after taking a pause to make sure I really wanted it (long pause for an expensive watch) it was almost sold out. I got one of the last ones in the country.
100%. The original must’ve been screaming for a service and would be different again afterwards on the grapher. I was wondering the exact same thing with the new model as to whether it had been fully wound beforehand. It makes a huge difference 👌👌
Got mine on release day last year (here in the UK) absolutely love it, put it a vintage style Uncle strap, yep one of fave watches. Great you've done a comparison, great job. Cheers.
Bought and love the new SRPK17K1. Looking sharp and I love the short lug to lug. And really appreciate the straight shape lug. Making strap very easy to change! If you have a rubber strap, the strap tugs inside the lug. Very clean look imho.
I like it! 🤤 If I could get the original 1968 in cherry condition and fully functional, like Mr. P's, 100% I'd go that route! I can regulate that thing to within 10 seconds no problem,
I’d pick the new one, in fact I did and it’s on my wrist today :) If you care about the “Made in” stamps then go for the non-K1 version, it has Made in Japan on both the dial and caseback. My favorite part is the case, I love the shape and how it makes the watch appear thinner than it is. The Namoki Mods slim SKX caseback did fit (using the original gasket) but it only saved like .2 or .3mm so I went back to the stock one. Bracelet is a hair-puller but is not so bad once it’s broken in, and it gets more flexible over time as well. I did swap out the clasp though for something more robust. This watch works great with many other straps too as long as they are not too thick, I only have 2 straps that won’t squeeze under the lug covers (unfortunately my fkm rubber tropical didn’t fit). I’m very glad I picked up this watch, 60’s looks with a modern movement is a great formula.
Great review, thank you! Great Seiko 5 reissue. I have an original '77 Turtle and am afraid to wear it for fear of breaking it, and it can't be relied upon for accuracy... so my preference would always be for the new model here. I'll have this on my radar for sure.
I managed to get a SRPK17 at the end of last year after hunting around for one for ages after watching a review on another channel (MWC) as none were left in the UK or on Amazon (and still aren't). I managed to get one from the USA on a deal so even with import taxes was still below RRP. Absolutely love the way it honours the original, probably my favourite watch in my collection and personally love the bracelet, it does respect the original.
Neither does it for me but a quick service and the old one would be something that would get an occasional wear. I've an old Seiko with a 7009 and acrylic, vintage can be great, and tell the time properly.
It's impressive that Seiko built a new case for this release. I hope Seiko does NOT release a blue version (there's a vintage blue version), because I might be "forced" to buy one. I feel the vintage lume thing on my recently acquired 6138-0030 Kakume chrono. I'm surprised there is any, but it's mostly useless. It looks just like what was shown in the video for the old model.
really like this one, I have the J1 version which says made in Japan on the dial and the kanji date. surprisingly the bracelet is very comfortable for me, and even with my hair arms it doesn't pull hairs - maybe I'm just very lucky. I want to get another one just to keep it box fresh, it'll be a keeper for a while!
I can’t believe Seiko are still using Hardlex crystal and stamped clasps when the rest of the watch industry are with sapphire and milled for half the price.
Right, after I got my Kamasu for 200 euros a couple of years ago I can't justify paying almost twice as much for a mineral. And both Orient and Seiko are in Seiko Epson Group, so that shouldn't really be a big problem for them to upgrade the crystal. It's all about their marketing.
They did such a good job with the king turtle with sapphire and ceramic bezel but unfortunately hardlex is their go to for many. I haven’t had a problem with hardlex ever but I get it
In this case, I can believe it. If it's supposed to be a 1:1 copy of a watch from 1968, it needs a crap bracelet and mineral glass (or even plastic) crystal. :) Had it been possible (i.e. cheap enough) to put a newly made 1968 model movement in there, Seiko would probably have done that as well. Anyway, the only way to get a sapphire crystal from Seiko these days seems to be to buy a >$500 watch. Not that I personally ever had a problem with mineral glass per se, but when they charge as much as they do, it ought to be sapphire in perhaps all but their very cheapest models.
Agreed. I will never ever ever buy another watch without sapphire for more than 50 dollars. They are throw away trash and should be treated and priced as sutch.
Old but in the condition I have my two 6139s running within 3 seconds a day on the chronograph Timer by eye and backed up by a Timegrapher when serviced that’s the only way to do vintage, practically knowing you’ll be servicing it right from the start, seiko usa on the east coast did mine back in 2019. The older movements are just a treat once fixed up and working well the complications you can get is also nice.
Would love to see more comparisons of originals to reissues. I'm sure it's hard to track down the originals though! But I appreciate these videos that much more. =)
Great video, Jody. This is a lovely reissued model, but that Hardlex crystal is a deal breaker. I think that the Seiko Tortoise is a better watch for the price.
I love reissues because of the idea that I can take a brand new watch, with a 50 year design history, wear it for 50 years and it's essentially a 100 year old design but still ticking
I love vintage watches, let me rephrase that…I love vintage reissue watches which is why I picked this one up a few months back. Mine however was fully made in Japan, it’s stamped on the case back.
I got the new one. Accuracy for me is -10 sec/day which is can live with, my wrist is hairless so the bracelet isn’t an issue. One thing you didn’t mention is a moan / niggle: the recessed crown is pretty hard to wind unless you do the index finger roll, which if done too hard can result in a callus or blister. Not sure if the old one’s movement could hand-wind.
I love that they did such a faithful reissue (and I do want one!) but as Seiko is the only watch brand left that still innovates in technology and design, I don't want to see them go too far down the path of rehashing their past. That's what the Swiss are for.
I bought this instantly after not being impressed by anything they were offering in awhile. This one though is simultaneously one of my favorite watches and my least favorite bracelet. It was the worst I've ever sized and if you have small wrists there is nowhere near enough articulation. It was tight and pinching top and bottom yet still had gaps on both sides lol. I put a vintage super engineer on it and love it now. Drapes perfectly and the rectangle links match the dial.
Great looking watch but I just wish Seiko would offer sapphire and a milled clasp as standard. Customers would feel like it's a lot better value for money at a small increase in manufacturing cost.
I always noticed that in apollo 13. I was paying attention to all the watches. Here’s one for you. Do you recognise the watch John Aaron was wearing? He’s the engineer who said “we have to turn everything off. Now.”!
The only problem is the most sane colorway (this one) was a limited edition meaning even though it was made in the thousands, you just can't go to the local store and buy this. Well done, Seiko.
Sir, that's entirely the point of quartz. It's cheaper and more accurate than mechanical movements. Hell, a $10 Dora the Explorer watch will be more accurate than a Rolex.... 🤦♂️Seiko nearly took out the entire Swiss watch industry with quartz......
Love seiko and love vintage so ill go for the original. I just dont get reissues. They did a good job though...great vid...waiting for the "cant believe seiko dont use sapphire" comments....zzzz
I love this watch... And I’m pretty basic so I will take the new one that looks super old with the new movement and better lume. 🤷🏻♂️ And for $311, it’s not a bad buy either IMO. Glad to get your take on it. Thanks!
It's a fun looking retro piece, but Seiko could easily go with a sapphire glass and/or a beller clasp on this one. I already have a pricey limited skateboarding themed Seiko 5 with a mineral crystal, and I get that the mineral is supposed to withstand a direct hit better (one of the reasons it's still used in G-Shocks). But here they could easily go with a sapphire, like I said. This is a retro sports themed piece, it's all about it's looks, so why not maximize the specs to make it look great for a longer time? I think I can change the mineral glass on my limited 5KX, since it's likely the same as on other models, but where would you find the slightly domed one?
Casio seems to have a nice option for people with small wrists with the ladies version of a MRW previously reviewed here, the LRW. Could you take a look?
Swing and a miss, especially with the wrist mower band. I do miss some of the vintage looks, but wish they would have used a better finished bracelet. Fun watch regardless... wish we had a few more retros. Good review!
On the vintage watch the lume dot at 12 o'clock lines up with the indice. However, on the anniversary watch it appears misaligned. What the hell is going on at Seiko? $300+ watch still without a Sapphire crystal and a pressed clasp too.
Got to disagree with the opening statement. With Seiko's northwards price drift they are no longer the best under $500. Especially with Citizen putting out so many bangers lately. As an example, the majority of Citizen's divers are below $500 and ISO certified. The cheapest geniune diver from Seiko on Starbuy is right on $500.
Leaning towards the Reissue 👉🏼 but besides the no Sapphire & substandard bracelet I think they could have ‘reimagined’ it a bit instead of a carbon copy. I’m also waiting on the next King reissue in hopes they hit the mark, get it right and put it in the Presage price bracket. Hey a man can dream ☺️✌🏼🇺🇸
I am also from 1968, have a few dings but am in excellent overall condition.

Lume pip, 12 o'clock and logo does not quite line up on the old one, start as you mean to go on.😂
Love this watch and bought it on sight. FWIW, my US model is made in Japan.
I have the old one, and my local watchmaker said he can't service the movement. I'd wear the old if i can get it serviced.
I'd go new, as I did with the 62mas.
On the vintage watch the lume dot at 12 o'clock lines up with the indice. However, on the anniversary watch it appears misaligned. What the hell is going on at Seiko? $300+ watch still without a Sapphire crystal and a pressed clasp too.
I hope they reissue the orange "Pepsi Pogue" some day...
They made a suspiciously similar one for their Lorus company so we may see a full on reissue soon
Crown on new one drives me crazy. It barely pops out and is so thin, it's hard to grab-I had to wind it with one finger
Knowing these likely wouldn't sell out, I still pre-ordered this one 😅
Got to disagree with the opening statement. With Seiko's northwards price drift they are no longer the best under $500. Especially with Citizen putting out so many bangers lately. As an example, the majority of Citizen's divers are below $500 and ISO certified. The cheapest geniune diver from Seiko on Starbuy is right on $500.
Exactly! 👍
SKX reissue please, seiko if you are watching.
I’d go for the new one
Hi there, Terrific lume on Amazon watches.
