I’ve never wanted a GMT because the fourth hand is always so prominent and makes me confused about the time. If I were to buy a GMT I’d buy this one precisely because the GMT hand is so subtle. I LOVE that. Since I will never need to know the GMT time every time I look at my watch, this would be so much better as an every day watch.

Agreed. They're neat but I dont change time zones much at all and in the event I do, I'd simply change the time. The 4th hand just isnt necessary for me but I've always liked the concept and functionality.

Good point about the lack of quickset date you get with these movements types. Great if you only own one watch and wear it all the time, I suppose.

I gotta say i do prefer a time elapse bezel to any other bezel variation as it is THE MOST useful complication (if u can even call it that) that a watch can have aside from obviously time telling.

Second note. I have the Wilton GMT with the 9075, and a Seiko Recraft with 7S movement. These two are the reason I caved and bought a watch winder. Much easier to just let them run (frankly with so many watches in rotation, the “issue” of wearing out the movement was secondary to the convenience of resetting the watches 🤷)

Both of my Rolex GMT’s (16713 root beer and 16570 Explorer 2) require me to change the date by advancing the jumping hour hand. Gives you the opportunity to interact with it after pulling them from the safe. Lots of charm to the Bulova but I too struggle to hold onto them for long.

Im so glad you reviewed this, it seems the best of the new GMT's. I like the green and this full lume one. I see them for £550ish over here. I might buy the full lume and get A1 to paint the gmt red.....

Like others have said, great explanation of the differences of the two types of GMTs. I used to travel a lot for work (around the US and Canada and over to Europe), but that was before I discovered automatic watches. At the time I relied on a quartz Seiko worldtimer with a quick-set time zone function.

I recently picked up a quartz Surfboard and love it. It does wear a little larger than I expected but I'm not sure what all the online hate against Bulova is all about. Sure, like Citizen and Seiko they have plenty of 'department store' watches, but they also have a great collection of watches I'll proudly wear around my watch snob friends.

I had the green one. The seal breaker for me was the non hacking movement. Also found the 20mm lug width to be disproportionately small for that version with a bigger case. I’ve heard they started making them with a hacking movement. When I know that’s officially the case, i intend to get it again.

I love your perspective on how to pick a GMT based on that convenience of setting the time. Very relevant to real life where many of us don't travel all over the world but DO rotate through a collection of watches and have to set the watch anytime we wear it. Fantastic review and probably pushed me over the line as I was considering this watch already. This video moved it up my queue. GREAT job!

Just got the Sea King in. It's massive lol. But, it's wearable. Not too tall and lighter than you'd think for a 49mm watch. Had one about ten years ago and somehow my brother got it from me. Been looking for one that's under $500. They are discontinued and people are selling them for crazy. Found it on Amazon UK for $185.

I actually like the way they've used an unobtrusive GMT hand. Some GMT hands are pretty in-your-face, and kind of dominate the dial. I like this 'less is more' approach, and let's face it, how many times does the average GMT owner actually check the second time zone on their watch?😀

Thanks for the review, especially for discussing caller vs. "true" GMT, the latter name is really badly chosen, because as you said, it just depends what will be more conventient for the owner. The fully lumed dial on your model is really cool.

I have this watch and it took a bit to gel with it. For my the rubber strap was the main issue because while the case is a perfect 45mm lug to lug the strap is so inflexible at the top its more like wearing a watch with an integrated bracelet taking the lug to lug to over 47mm. It wears more like 48-49mm with that strap but after ditching the strap for another one I finally fell in love with it. The date setting though..As you mentioned I don't wear watches for more than a few days before swapping to something else and yes resetting the date on this is a pain. I also only got it for the amazing full lumed dial and bezel.

You are correct about the obsession about features, most divers watches aren’t used for diving or even swimming and most GMTs aren’t used for anything at all😂.

The ‘bronzed metal’ is just steel sprayed with coloured DLC or the other less scratch resistance, it should keep the case scratch free. The only downside with this is that if you manage to scratch it, you can’t lift the scratch without removing the DLC. And that in itself is a mission. The gold coloured steel Apple Watches use the same method.

I looked at a Devil Diver on a bracelet, and the clasp seemed cheap and thin. The execution of the cyclops is very nicely done; however, combining a sector dial, a thin second hand, and a GMT hand seems rather busy. It's good to know that flyer GMTs don't have a quick-set date. Overall I guess this is one of those watches that I want to like more than I do. To each his own. 🤷‍♂

The difference between a true/traveller GMT and a caller/office GMT is the complexity of the manufacture. The first is a movement designed specifically with all the clutches and gears to link and separate the time mechanisms with the GMT function and the second class of movements is simply an adaptation of the day set function.

For me the bigger point is travel. Unless you're someone who travels for work, you'd have to take a lot of vacations for that isolated hour hand to truly be significantly worth it.

The true gmt arguments will soon be over now affordable brands are getting hands on them. The whole thing was about snobbery.

These was not made with jets in mind, but with sails, Jody. For those who surf the waves through time zones and adjust their watches every or couple of days.
    Oceanographer, you know? 😉

Taking the opposite approach to something like the Nezumi Aviera GMT - not a watch I think you've reviewed Jodie - unless I missed it! On that one, the GMT is THE most dominant hand. Both valid design choices imho, and depends on what you want from your GMT - an "at a glance" reference, or a slightly more recessive secondary bit of info.
Go on Jodi, review the Nezumi. You've done a couple of other watches by them, why not do their best (again, imho) design?

Ok,ok, spoken to soon, I love the lumed dial!🙏👏

I mean, even on a GMT watch you are checking the main three hands most of the times. WHEN you need to know the time of the other time zone, you can take the luxury of spending an additional second to check the small fourth hand. I don't think it's a big deal.

yeah, the GMT hand is comically small, but this watch is a reall looker. And I love GMTs with timing bezels; true GADA watches

I want to add a Bulova to my collection, but there is always something that puts me off. This time it’s the plated case. They never age gracefully in my experience. Oh well, I’m still searching for the unicorn Bulova.

If they sold this one (with the lume dial) as a 3 hander with the 9000 series for under $500 I'd have one. But they don't.

Have that small a GMT hand on a 'Caller' GMT would be bad enough... Bu doing it on a 'True' GMT is even worse 🤦‍♂It's a shame, as it's a good looking watch otherwise too. The price is pretty steep though. I recently got the Zelos Mako 'True' GMT with a meteorite dial as well, and that is way less expensive... Not to mention with a more leadable GMT hand too.

The first GMT I’m into cause of the subtle hand, I always hated the huge colorful GMT hands on other watches, for me this is the way. 👌

Jody, you like this watch because it looks like one of your series of Oris. Therefore I would guess it will not last too long in the collection. ;)

I like the more subtle GMT hand, much nicer than the clownish gigantic red arrows like on most GMT's.
