I got accepted recently and was really worried that it might not be the right place, might be too much work, but everything you said resonated with me! (Ok the math not so much hehe) but deep discussions and mastering a topic are exactly what I want!
@@audreyflavin8543 thank you! So sorry for only replying now. My advice, don't get overly commited to the idea of going to one school. If you know you want to go to a top 20 and think you are qualified then I strongly recommend shotgunning. It's an effective strategy if you can afford (financially and time wise) to submit a ton of applications. I applied to 17 schools and the randomness of the results was really evident. I got likely letters to 2 top 10 schools and got waitlisted/rejected from 6 others. Even "target" schools were very random as well. This being said don't let the quality of your applications go down, and it is better to submit just a few good ones than a ton of rushed ones. Best of luck!
@I M Sure, My SAT was 1560. My GPA was a 4.9. As for ECs my main ones were: Captain of HS sports team, competed at international level club sports, internship with a very field specific company, founded a community service project related to one of my interests, apprenticed as a luthier (string instrument builder), normal club stuff like robotics debate and science olympiad. Not many notable awards besides national merit and national AP scholar. All 4s and 5s on about 16 AP tests. The UChicago AOs commented on how much they liked my essays so I do believe that those are the most important. In retrospect I think I worried too much about perfecting stats or adding another ec. I just talked about something I was passionate about in my uchi essay and apparently that worked. Best of luck! Let me know if you have any other questions.
I want to go here so bad! I love that environment of discussion and just talking about a book or problems and just forget about the grade :) Thank you for your perspective!
Hi! It's very great to hear you talk about UChicago and its rigor. I'm going to apply for PhD in English two years from now. So, it's always great to hear somebody from UChicago speak. The rigor must be real. Their grad program in English is literally ranked first in the US, teied with UC Berkeley. Harvard, Yale, Princeton come after that. Well, rankings shouldn't be taken too seriously and all that. But still, it's astonishing how UChicago has achieved this reputation as being one of the most intellectually rigorous universities. Thanks for this video.
I'm very interested in going to UChicago because their philosophy program looks perfect for me, I think you've solidified my choice. I don't know if I have what it takes, but I do know that I'll see it to the end.
Lmao, I already wanted to go, but now I know it would be perfect for me. Now the hard part is actually getting accepted. I’ll know in about 5 days if I’m going or not.
Hi, this video was super informative- it kinda solidified my desire to go! But I was wondering if I could pitch my “why uchicago” idea to you? I’m applying ED and I need all the help I can get :)
Hey boss, I'm starting to write my stuff for UChicago. I'm still researching about the "why uchicago" question so what're a couple things that are super unique to UChicago? Thanks!
The trick is not to just list things from the website. Sure, tell them the things you like or sound cool. But anyone can look up the course catalog and say "I would love to take X with Professor Y, it sounds interesting blah blah." You need to talk about why the school is a good fit for YOU. Why is it the right choice for you and your personality, goals, and characteristics as a student? What will the university give you that's unique, and what can you contribute to the community in return? That's how to stand out in the essay; not research, but some soul searching inside yourself.
pretty hard, most people are pretty stressed so yeah honestly if that's a big concern might not be the school for you. I studied really hard my first 1.5 years, the bottom floor of the regenstein library is 75% full at 2 am
I downloaded a tap counting app and spent 5 minutes counting how many times you said "like" instead of working on my UChicago essays. Am I the type of person who would like UChicago?
The way made it sound like is that you could go to another school and do engineering or you could go to Chicago and do math, it would still be the same course load, so why not just go to a cheaper school and do a “better” degree like engineering over mathematics at a cheaper school and still get Chicago style of course load?
the way my serotonin levels just kept rising with every point you made that i could relate to
aewome
Saaame😭😭😭 I’m such a nerd, but ughh I love the idea of just being submerged in knowledge.
I've literally been looking for a school where I'm pushed to master something to the best extent I could! thanks for making this video
This is the video that made me decide to come to UChicago; no regrets. Thank you Mason.

im guessing you were a stem major of some kind, but do you know what workload/stress/free time looks like for a more humanities centered major?
Not me watching this as a second year at UChicago lol
