    I’m going to play devil’s advocate on the price: Why are we willing to pay $250 for a race-day shoe but not for a shoe that we’ll wear-in theory-several times a week? If this shoe ticked all the boxes and made 15-20-mile runs a breeze and easy on your body, as it appears intended to do, wouldn’t that be more valuable than a race-day shoe?

    • @spacemanstanly
      @spacemanstanly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ptheiss0428 honestly this is how I buy shoes! Not to say I’ve spent $250 before, but if I’m looking to pay a premium fee it’s almost certainly going to be on a trainer I know I’m going to get hundreds of miles out of versus a racer which will only get used now and then for a very specific purpose and distance.

      I see your point, but not everyone is willing to pay $250 for a racing shoe, and those who are (I'm not one of them) likely aren't doing it to get the *most use* out of their shoes, but to PR or run a qualifying time for another race, which will create more lasting memories than their weekend long runs. Now, the argument *could* be made that if you trained in better shoes, you'd be better positioned to run faster on race day without the fancy shoes... and maybe that's how companies will start marketing shoes like these? Anyway, great comment! Hoping it generates a good discussion :)

      ptheiss0428 so that you can gain an edge on race day. Your training runs should not be performed with goals setting a PR so using a shoe with a carbon fiber plate, for example, isn’t as important.

    • @ptheiss0428
      @ptheiss0428 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Josh Runs a Marathon Yes, of course you wouldn’t use a Vaporfly for training runs. I’m talking about long runs and recovery runs. What if this Asics was shown to reduce the stress on your body during those runs by 4%? If you could do that for all of your long runs and recovery runs for 4 months, wouldn’t you consider paying a lot more for the shoe? I would at least consider it.

    Just watched "believe in the run's" first impressions video and i'll say the same thing here...its exciting they are trying to catch up or at least squeeze into the market with a more modern and concept design but as always, its far too heavy. I could see this should being used in the height of marathon training then switch to the vaporfly for the race itself.

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon
      @JustinDoesTriathlon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wonder if it's targeted towards... Let's say 'aspirational' runners with deep pockets and maybe a lower weekly volume? Something like 10-20. Sort of the... "Not running marathon levels but wants the biggest 'advantage' crowd," if that makes sense? See it in cycling a lot too.

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JustinDoesTriathlon very possibly, I mean £225 here in the UK for an overweight shoe is pretty pricey isn’t it....

    Just saw the ad of the shoe on a local sports magazine, and this video is right here. Great review as always!
    I have never doubt the quality of Asics running shoes, yet at $250 this is probably not something for me.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a lot of people will feel similarly

  • @spacemanstanly
    @spacemanstanly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the price point is definitely going to put these shoes out of most runners reach but the concepts at play have me super interested. A very highly cushioned (31mm stack height) and zero drop shoe using all of Asics flagship technologies, its a really different platform than the shoes they’ve made in the past and it’s good to see a major company other than Nike trying something drastically different from the norm. And just a quick question out of curiosity, was this your first experience with a zero millimeter heel drop? Any thoughts if so?

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i think it may have been my first experience with zero drop. i've run in the hoka carbon rocket, which is a 1mm, but it's also a racer, so i don't really count that.
      i had no idea what the stated heel drop number was before the video was published (like i said, it was a blind read). i didn't think it was a zero drop, but i may have been distracted by the substantial rocker

  • @racesonyouth8102
    @racesonyouth8102 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think if you watch the promotion videos for the MetaRun it definitely highlights heel to toe strikes. Maybe it’s just me but I noticed it is a little tougher to maintain a more forefoot heavy run in the larger Asics models including Kayano, Kinsei(when it was still out), and Nimbus. So maybe this is their version of like a long slog recovery option? I don’t see how they could market this as fast

    • @hypnagogue
      @hypnagogue 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Raceson Youth I don't see the point in marketing the shoe with heel-striking, since that's just bad form. even if you're running slowly you should be midfoot striking so that you don't get shin splints or other shock-related injuries.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i thought the video of the heel strike in the metarun video was quite jarring. it didn't seem right to me.

    Another great thorough shoe review! I used to be an Asics guy for years but wanted to try different brands. Your channel actually made me go back to Nike and am currently running the Peg 35 and Turbos. Not too keen on trying this Asics shoe- looks heavy and odd looking. Btw, wondering if you will review the Adidas Ultraboost 19- would like to hear your take. Keep up the great work

    i'm a heel to toe runner. and i believe it is the most common. like more people are right handed instead of left handed. and i believe the design looks special and different. but i don't hate it. i hope for people that want it that they release it in more neutral colours. and i also think that cross sign on the sole you where talking about. that the company decided to do that because less rubber is less weight. so to make the shoe basically lighter. i'm not sure.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have been thinking that the channels result in four quadrants of midsole in the shoe that disarticulate. perhaps they are going for what Salomon was doing with the Predict RA (which I did not particularly enjoy)

    As far as I remember the Metarun is for runners that needs a shoe that stabilise the landing, and this is for neutral runners like myself, if we think we can afford it or are more ambitious about our running than I am at the moment.

    It seems that this shoe is for runners that don't do long runs too often or don't run many marathons every year. And they just want to finish this runs even if it means running slowly ... this Metaride might help these runners as a stamina boost .
    If this shoe's tech really works it could be the number one option for runners doing theirs first few marathons .... While a VaporFly 4% are for the more experienced runners that can already run fast and want to go even a bit faster.

    • @kofuzi

    Hi I like your review. Ladies shoes are lighter then men’s version. I changed the lacing pattern making it looser on the foot (skipping the outlier hole) and then using the extra hole near the final lace to bring it all together. I like the shoe. I think one should journey with this shoe iow start with a short run and change the laces and fit. Then two days later go for a longer run trying out the placing of the shoe.. maybe do 16 x 400m at 10km pace until you find your happy place and memories it. I So I think one should spend a few weeks bonding with these shoes. I usually run in zero drop light shoes that are very flexible. But I’m enjoying these very much. I do roll my feet with a spiked ball after every run to keep my fascia supple.

    I started running in ASICS, but the more I look at the competition, the more ASICS seem to feel over-engineered. This one looks over the top in that aspect and ridiculously overpriced. I’m curious to hear your final thoughts & conclusion on these strange shoes though.

    May start jogging again, because today I walked Metaride for 9km, SUPERB.

  • @MonteComeau
    @MonteComeau 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was gifted the MetaRun2. The last version in white/grey colorway. I thought after watching and reading reviews I would love the shoe but it still sits in my closet after about 50K. I really did not like this shoe at all and ran in the Asics Gel Kayano previously and loved them as a training shoe. This shoe felt similar to the Kayano only heavier and more stability going on. The one thing that I really like was the outsole that has great grip pattern and the quality is first rate. It was very comfortable walking but not so much after around 5K for me. I would never buy this shoe to be honest. I think it would be a great stability shoe for runners who require that type of shoe but the price eliminates it from consideration for most of us.

      @@spacemanstanly agree about the name-calling, but you're the one missing the point that there's no reason to think only "super fast lightweight racers" should go for such a price. the metaride is not priced like a racer; it's priced like a good shoe

      @spacemanstanly 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      私はpoptartです fair point! And especially after seeing the update video of the metaride after 100 miles I think your probably right, it’s certainly it’s own in terms of concept but seems solid and like it’ll last for longer than most other shoes. @@kofuzi I just think that only people that are really into running would pay $250 for a running shoe, and most people that are really into running would want something with a more advanced energy-returning foam and light weight at that price-point.
      I guess the $250 doesn't seem very justified. The foam isn't a new super responsive type, the weight is heavy, and other brands have already been doing max-cushion, zero-drop, and rockers for way less money.
      I think this shoe comes off bad as a "let's just charge $250 to make people get hyped" type of release. There is certainly an element of the for Nike and Reebok too, but the Vaporfly has also proven itself at the marathon distance. Similarly, the Reebok seems to be the ideal shoe for racing shorter distances. This could be attempting to be THE $250 trainer, I suppose, but I just don't see it.
      This is all fascinating to observe though. I am interested in people's opinions running in the shoe. It seems like a lot of people are extremely skeptical of this one though.
