Pingu is a stop-motion show about a funny penguin named Pingu created by Otmar Gutmann and Erika Brueggemann. Episodes of Pingu that were censored, deleted, and banned, due to being considered violent, inappropriate, or just downright terrifying. Season 1 #1 Hello Pingu-Pingu goes outside with a big red ball, then goes inside to blow his nose, bet while he's doing that his ball gets stolen by two other penguins. He grabbed it the ball but one penguin pushes it out of his hands or wings and then smacks Pingu on the head, and the other causes him to trip on his ball and pop it. The scenes where one penguin smacks Pingu on his head and the other making Pingu trip on his ball is edited out by the BBC when released on VHS due to violence and it was almost going to be banned, but it still aired in the UK for quite a while and in the United States on Cartoon Network. It was eventually removed from British television in 2003, and did not air in the United States afterwards. The scenes however, are still intact on VHS releases outside of the UK and DVD releases, including the United States. #2 Pingu Looks After the Egg-Pingu is put to incubate an egg, but gets tired quickly and puts on a song and starts dancing. Crazily enough, the egg starts to boogie as well and Pingu tries to catch it, causing a terrible mess. his parents are alerted to the noise and run in, the egg is safely captured but Pingu is found hiding in a cupboard in fear of punishment. On the BBC VHS release of this episode, the scene where Pingu is stuffed inside the cupboard worried about how his parents will respond to what happened was removed completely, likely due to it unintentionally mirroring a self-harm attempt. #6 Jealousy- Pingu is getting jealous of his new little sister Pinga, and tries to get attention from his mom, by: Pretending to be a baby in Pinga's crib, Pretending to be sick, Banging a pot on his head, and Walking around with a blanket on his head. The shot where Pingu pretends to be sick was once cut in the USA because some viewers found it inappropriate. There was also a similar edit to the episode as with Pingu Looks After the Egg for the BBC VHS, but it was more elaborate this time around, with the scene of Pingu closing himself in the toy chest being deleted and his mother walking over to comfort him being replaced by a recycled shot from The New Arrival of the telephone ringing, which wasn't in the original or remastered versions. #14 Pingu Runs Away-Pingu is misbehaving at the dinner table, which accelerates and he ends up ruining dinner. His mother is shown spanking him, and he runs away from home. but he did not realize that the antarctic can be a spooky place for a runaway penguin as he almost go crushed by falling ice, then he encounters some scary looking mounds of ice which not only frightened Pingu, but a lot of very young viewers too. It was also removed from British television in 2005 and was one of the few episodes that were pulled, and later banned from all future American airings due to its offensive and over the very dark top material. It was still released on DVD in the United States however. #16 Music Lessons- The original version of this episode contains copyrighted music which The Pygos Group failed to get clearance from the Music Publishers Holding Company (now Warner Music Group). The redubbed version contained a new piece of music for which MPHC did give Pygos the permission to use. but then oddly, the piece in the original version was used in the My Friend Pingu application. #19 Little Accidents-Pingu goes to a drink stand and Pinga follows, and drinks a bunch of juice and then urinates on the ground(GROSS!). Pingu orders Pinga to go to her potty, but soon finds he needs the toilet too. After managing get his dad off the toilet, he runs into the bathroom but didn't reach the toilet, making a big yellow puddle in front of the toilet. This episode was placed on official ban from broadcast or home video distribution (except the UK and Canada) due to toilet humour, the realistic appearance of urination, and alcoholic references, although Amazon Prime Video still has it up. #26 Pingu's Dream-After hearing a story from his mother at bedtime, Pingu has a dream that his igloo is blown away in the wind and his bed comes to life and acts like a horse. everything seems OK until a gigantic walrus appears and starts tormenting Pingu and also starts eating his bed's mattress. This episode was placed with an unofficial ban from broadcast distribution due to the Giant Walrus being too frightening and haunting for too many young viewers. It was also removed from British television in 2003. It was still broadcast in the United States however, and was also released on DVD in said region (Region 1), but it hasn't been released on VHS by BBC due to the major controversy towards this episode. Season 2 #1 Pingu at the Doctor's-Pingu is playing with his Sister but accidentally crashes into a table and maimed his beak, starts bleeding and blood is shown throughout the episode. This episode was placed under unofficial ban from broadcast or video distribution (except the UK and the US) due to seeing real blood. This is the only episode to get banned in Poland. #2 Pingu's Admirer-Pingu is at school and there is a new female student there who seems to like Pingu but Pingu had no interest in her. they do become friends and walk together and see a street sign that points to two different places and oddly is written in Russian, one said "Glastnost" and the other said"Perestroika" . This was accused of promoting both Communism and the Soviet Union, it's also written in Russian. This, however, did not prompt this episode to be banned. #5 Pingu's First Kiss-Pingu is having trouble finding alone with his new girlfriend and keeps getting bothered by other penguins. but eventually they kiss each other beak to beak. This episode was banned and removed from American television due to the beak-to-beak contact being found too inappropriate for children. However, other countries found it alright, including the UK. Season 3 #9 Pingu Quarrels With His Mother-Pingu wants to go play with his friends, but his mom forbids him and makes him do chores, conflict between the two grows and it ends up with Pingu's mum losing her temper and slaps him on the cheek. The scene where Pingu's mother slaps Pingu on the face is edited out by the BBC when released on VHS. This episode was removed from most American airings because of said scene; however, it did air on Cartoon Network as part of the Small World block in the United States. However, the episode was shown uncut on DVD, The Pingu Show, and in TV airings in Canada. #9 Pingu Gets a Warning-Pingu decides to spend the day kite flying with Pingo. However the best winds for kite flying are where the nosey neighbour Mrs. Peng-Sniff lives, and it shows them being chased by Mrs. Peng-Sniff. This episode is banned in Japan for some unknown reasons. Some believe that it could have been due to the fact that Mrs. Peng-Sniff chases after Pingu and Pingo with a carpet beater, however, Kupukupu Information Bureau assumes that this was because the story wouldn't click with Japanese audiences likely due to there not being a clear sense of accomplishment at the end of the episode or due to Mrs. Peng-Sniff being seen as a negative depiction of poverty-stricken people. #22 Pingu & the Doll-Pingu is acting like an indigenous by having his teddy bear pinned to a piece of wood and chanting and dancing around like a Native American. But he later on does not think it is good enough, so when he sees Pinga's teddy bear, he tries to get it instead. Using the rope he had with him, Pingu lassos the teddy, but Pinga sees it right away and tries to hold it back which results in the teddy's leg tearing off. Thirsting for revenge, Pinga breaks the sail off Pingu's toy boat and then runs to Mother. Pingu and Pinga argue in front of her about who is to blame. Eventually, Mother sides with Pinga on the matter, causing an unhappy Pingu to slump outside feeling mostly remorseful for his actions. This episode was banned throughout most of North America due to Pingu stereotyping as a Native American. Presumably, for the same reason, this episode was also banned in Japan due to portrayal of Native Americans. The ban has most likely been lifted, however, since it is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video in the United States. Note: This is the last episode to be known as a controversial episode (mostly in the US, but one of the only banned from airing in Japan).
