In 1973, I was in a boarding house at Dansoman attending Wesley Grammer school with little or no food to eat. Fifty years after this the students are still experiencing the same conditions. Are we progressing or retrogressing as a nation ?

Sad state of affairs!!! Poorly-planned free SHS...my school, Adisadel College, originally built to take between 600 and 800 students is now "home" to over 4,500. This means more desks, more bunk beds, more Science lab space, more library space, more sanitary facilities (toilets and baths), more dormitory space, more teachers, etc ...Needless sloganeering and a political attitude and leadership that perceives dissenting / divergent views on anything developmental as electorally-defeatist and thus unworthy of its attention has brought us this far! Are Ghanaians playing the ostrich: yes, I think we are!!! Poor Kwesi Kwarteng; showing up to serve dishes doesn't "wash" the issues away. The Bible says that "Wisdom is justified of her children" - a scripture somewhere in the book of Matthew; basically, no planning, no show. Also, Luke 14:28...this for Kwesi Kwarteng and his folks at the GES...

For political gains our leaders rush to role policies they very well know can't be sustained. These same leaders and politicians don't send their families to these schools.

That is what we were doing before this government came.
We paid about 800 cedis which included boarding, feeding and utility bills.
The government covered tuition for everyone, just that we had to pay for our food.

Those in charge are too pompous and arrogant to admit something is not working. No way I will allow any of my kids to eat any of these foods. What's wrong with the gov't reviewing the policy so those who really need it go to shs free and those who can pay, pay? Even parents are willing to subsidize for proper implementation and feeding but gov't still says no. Just because of politics.

The free SHS is a good policy but the government should have started it as a pilot project, using selected regions, learn from it and improve the system. This wholesale approach is always going to breed serious problems and cost more to fix. Hope future leaders can learn from this and improve.

Tuition has always been free from primary to university since independence.
Free SHS therefore implied that government is now taking charge of feeding. The feeding provided is too inadequate compared to pre free shs. My daughter nearly died recently in a boarding house. So parents are actually contributing some fees.
Government should allow the parents to help more. Free SHS is bad for the kids. Politics nkoaa

Kindly sit and think of the reason why it hasn't been done until now. An effective government will phase this initiative out and set up infrastructures before they roll it out. Students don't even attend secondary school for 3 years anymore. There are thousands of parents who can pay for school fees and would glady do so to ensure their kids get the proper education to succeed in life. Ask former students from prestigious schools once ran by the church or other bodies if their food were substandard.
