On a wider note there is a real issue with how non challenged biased commentary is being allowed to shape opinion. It's not just Gary Neville, or even Man Utd, but in all walks of life. So a big thumbs up for pointing out the crap that's been allowed to permeate through as if it's fact, rather than what it really is. Bigotry and jealousy.
Gary Neville’s biased commentary has shaped thinking of Trent because he had one bad game against Rashford 7 years ago. You’ve now got gobshites like Keane and this idiot saying he can’t defend despite being part of the defence with the least conceded in two years running and winning multiple trophies.
I think Rashford as well. You don’t go from a 30 goal season to being a bad player next season. And you don’t do it on your own. Often players has fluctuations in their outputs: Giggs goes 13 goals to 1 early on. Scholes had a run 14, 9, 2 in the Premier League. And these guys were in a team overflowing in goal-scorers. They were a team, not just loading it all up on the shoulders of one bloke.
As a villa fan who remembers my club nearly going bankrupt and got relegated having Micah Richards refuse to leave the club even though he was finished and thousands of villa fans begging him to go for the sake of our club writting a petition begging him to cancel his contract (he continued being paid 3 years after his last game for villa ) something united loving Gary I very much doubt would do to his club in the same position....that alone plus obvious ability (I remember seeing Gary play ) makes Neville the far better player
Gary jacked it in as soon as he knew his legs were done, in fact he stayed one season too many because SAF begged him to stay. Half way through that last season Gary jacked it in and cancelled his contract.
@@Oljankylegs Micah was an absolute disaster for Villa, but he wasn't helped by playing in our worst team for the past 30 years. Neville is like Carvajal. No headlines, no flashiness, just straight 7s every game for years and years. Everyone else takes them for granted but their coaches know to put them on the team sheet every matchday
And now his intelligence shows after his career in him building his business empire and one of the biggest TH-cam football shows, while alot of the older generations footballers struggled to move on
I'm 61. Having supported followed and watched United for all those years through the Fergie era GN would be the first name on my teamsheet !!! Legend of the game in so many ways !!! ❤❤❤
I must admit I had fallen into this way of thinking about Neville too. Even though I watched most of his career and saw how good he was for us and England. Thanks for snapping me out of it.
He was very good consistent player. I don’t like to use FIFA ratings as a an example, but I like to because it helps visualize how good players are. Gary Neville was a 85 rated right back, with all his important fullback stats at or above 80, and his form never hits inconsistent. Always at normal or in form.
Nice! He was a fantastic player. Outstanding as a fullback. Man Utd looked poorer when he was out the team. Huge respect for what he achieved with club and country.
Not even a United fan but he was a great player. Probably the most underrated right back ever to play in the premier league. Thank you for your video highlighting this.👌
Video is 2 months old now but I just stumbled across it 😂 really enjoyed this. When I’m ever asked about the best premier league team ever Gary is always picked at right back for me. Brilliant loyal player. Hated watching him as a kid being a Liverpool fan. But the man was class
Even if one didn't grow up watching United through that era of dominance; it should still be fairly obvious he was very good at his position from the fact that Fergie never really looked for a right back that might better him and the 85 caps for England. Similar to what Rio was saying; watching Utd, you never really felt 'they're/we're a bit of a liability at right back'.
I think Neville playing down his ability and career doesn't help. He was functional and lacked flair but he was reliable and solid. I wouldn't mind him in our team right now, would play him ahead of AWB and Dalot.
Spot on - It grates me the way people talk about this legend, Put some respect on is name - well earned and thoroughly deserves plaudits for his career AND ability
Great video Sam - totally agree. He essentially started the overlapping attacking full back trait in English football. Was also a phenomenal crosser, particularly when heading towards the byline. Crosses were never too high or too low - always (mostly) perfect. Criminally underrated but he only has himself to blame for playing himself down.
Thank you for this video. People need to see indeed how good he was and not just bash him.... he has more trophies than most of these washed up ex players wanna be pundits.
well done! Gary was excellent. that stat of only 3 RBs bought during his time is actually insane. people think because you are not the flashiest player in a great team that you aren't top level (makelele suffered from this but then got his flowers thanks to Zidane and Mourinho). football is such a team game that you cannot have a top level team with a weak link...
Gary has the adoration and respect from his peers. Shows his character. He is confident of this ability - not just achievement in the game, but also current achievements. Look at him now. His business and media portfolio is impressive. Btw great video. Thanks for reminding all of us (and future football fans) of his greatness.
He made me think of the old Filet-O-Fish with Platt. He was a rock that the rest could use to cover and supply them, while they did the glorious bit and got the back page picture.
I remember being around 9-10 years old watching a United game with my dad and Gary Nev scuffed while almost falling over a ballooned shot which saw him miss an easy open goal. I couldn't believe it, 'shocking! how did he miss that?' I said and my dad looked back and replied 'Son, every player has his limitations'. Those words have stuck with me until this day. this day I'll never forget what he said
Always thought of him as a substandard 2nd class player and whenever i used man utd in fifa 07-12, i never ever thought highly of him. This video has completely changed my image of him. Very well said.
The greatest manger and the greatest club…never ever replaced Gary Neville. They barely even bought a back up. That tells you everything you need to know about how good Gary Neville was.
He was a bit of a Djokovic of Football, he didn't do anything flashy or remarkable, but he absolutely nailed all the basics and had no weaknesses, that is what made him a great player, and is also what makes him overlooked and forgotten vs his flashier contemporaries. He never scored an overhead, or from half way, the women gravitated to the supermodel he played next to etc, but Mr consistent he was, thorn in every team's side.
I'm a huge Federer fan, but suggesting Djokovic has nailed the basics/consistency but doesn't do anything flashy or remarkable is the opinion of an utter casual imo
@yesdcotchin utter casual... well that's a comment of an utter bell. If you had some nous, you'd see that it was a huge compliment I was paying, and it was in the context of other players that took the plaudits more often, yet you focused on one word I used while quickly typing out a post. That's just weird I'd say.
@roronoalaw7772 well done for missing the point. You do know you can compare attributes of two humans without meaning all attributes are identical? I have legs and arms, and so does Messi, doesn't mean I'm saying I'm the best to ever play football.
I think a better comparison would have been David Coffin. No notable standout features yet a strong work ethic and never say die attitude going up against often stronger and more talented players. There is no Djokovic in football. Messi is Federer and Cristiano is Nadal.
Love this. I started watching football in 02 and Neville's retirement feels a lifetime away now, but I still remember that at that time, nobody would dream of calling him average.
"Just Failed.. haha" despite the fact you won all there was to win? Despite the fact year on year you performed consistently at a high level? Cmon Gary... You were a DAMN good player who I watched for years and years. Stop downplaying how good you actually were because of clowns like Carragher and Richards.... Micah Richards thinks he is better than Gary Neville? Jesus....
Richards was so good at City they replaced him and sent him packing first choice they got. He retired because nobody wanted him while Nevile only left Sir Alex Fergusons United team because age and injuries caught up with him.
Garry is too good as a person, thats why he undermine himself just to make those clowns Carra and Micah laugh. but we all know both of them nowhere near Garry's level.
100% Truth!! Neville was an absolute rock for United, understated, not flashy, utter workhorse and allowed the players around him shine because he did all of the groundwork for them to be able to go forward.
Great vid, his biggest fault is his self deprecation, speaking from experience I've realised in old age it serves no purpose, if you are young and have this stop right now, there are enough people out there willing to cut you down without doing it to yourself
It was underrated players like Gary Neville, Dennis , Irwin, Butt, Park that allowed the attacking players to thrive..Proper legends in their own rights
Fantastic video. I totally agree. Neville was the best full back of his time in the league. One of Englands best too. He did the basics to a high class level. Great crosser of the ball. Highly intelligent on the field, and as tough as they come.
Very very solid player. Knew his role and did it exceptionally. Bled for the team.. and was basically a Moneyball player. Respect due. From a Liverpool player.
As a Chelsea fan, this video opened my eyes and I agree Gary is one of the best in EPL history. He reminds me of Azpilicueta in the EPL he has been the most consistent player in the league, being defensively sound, no crazy lace or passing but he could give a good cross and could make the team play better.
8 minutes of perfection. Thank you for this, as a UTD fan who grew up watching Neville during those prime years, it's so cringy watching him get disrespected every so now and then by players who have not had the career he has had, dare I say lesser players...
I really hope he watches this. ❤ I forgot how good his crosses were, was always pinging bangers. Absolute legend of the game, deserves a lot more praise.
Awesome and eye opening video. I'll admit I was one who disrespected him too because everyone else was doing it. But your points are 100% true. He wouldn't have survived that long in United if he wasn't that good
Well said. Gary Neville is a legend when United was a team of legends. I have supported the greatest football team for over fifty years and Gary is hands down the best right back we have had in that time. I`m used to as all United fans are, the unhinged hatred and pure jealousy towards our glorious club and their attempts to rewrite history and constantly put us down. An idiot in his twenties told me the other day that Roy Keane was over rated and only looked good because of his team mates ! I was going to kick off and go full Scottish on him but instead I shook my head and quietly told him if you believe that you are delusional and know nothing about the great game and should never speak again. I hated Stevie G. As all United fans do. That's our job but I respected him as a player because second to being a Red Devil I`m a football fan. People that don`t respect are not worth listening to or talking to.
Great video. I’d like to see a video like this on Rooney, who has also become very under-appreciated. Stat merchants nowadays who never watched these players can’t appreciate their brilliance. As mentioned in the video, the way that players who have played with and against Neville talk about him should say everything that anyone needs to know about how good he was. I’ve never seen Rio or even Roy Keane defend anyone like they’ve defended Neville. They’d know better than anyone, after all. What people struggle to understand is that fullbacks didn’t require the same things back then as they do today. Dribbling past multiple players, constantly whipping in crosses, 15+ assists per season, etc. Neville was very good going forward, it just wasn’t often required of him.
Great video and echoes my feelings precisely. It genuinely annoys me that other players feel so confident in dismissing Neville and worse that Gary allows it to happen. The best right back I've seen at United in my 40 years watching them, would get in my all time 11 and one of the top 5 full backs in Premier League history easily. A great, great player.
Respect for making this video Sam. It really irks me when people including Gary himself as you rightly pointed out downplays his career and achievements. A true legend.
What a great video Well said and put together Neville is indeed overlooked & underrated I myself as a united fan of over 30 years could not of put this better!
Gary was to that United team what Phil Neal was to his Liverpool team two decades earlier. Both very good, underrated players who delivered every game.
I did not really know at his time why he was so highly valued. I only remember his cross vs. milan. But yes, all of what you said was true. I myself used to swap him on pes 2007 straight away because he was very slow in it. But he will remain a legend and our captain.

It says everything about JC, MR, etc that they try to diminish him ... and it says everything about him that he can sit with his medals and history and just laugh it off. One of the greatest united players ever.
I think what it comes down to is that Gary just didn't hog the spotlight for his performances, and RB isn't a 'sexy' position like a winger or a forward. That, and the fact that Gary is just so humble.
too humble 😅
Nah, he just wasn't naturally gifted or ultra fast. He says it himself. He was surprised to be in the team and decided not to let his chance go. No way. So he did all he could and always gave 100%.
Humble about his playing career but humble generally absolutely not
And yet, it has become a sexy position.
That is a notable difference
@@yt.personal.identification not really. Aside from Trent and Kyle Walker, how many other RBs really get any kind of attention, compared to say, LWs?
As a liverpool fan, people take the piss out of him because of what he says about the glazers and the fact that he flopped as a manager. Additionally, he allows these jokes. He takes it like a man, and props to him. He doesn't let his ego speak for himself. The man is in control of his emotionals when he gets mocked by the likes of micha
richards. As for the fans... it's almost as people either never seen him play or they somehow relate the fact that because he flopped as a manager, he is also a flop player. Gary neville is a true legend of the game. Didn't set the world alight... football isn’t about that for me anyways. It's consistency that takes you to the top. And he had it in abundance. What. A. Player.
100% facts
@@Salacious-Crumb didn't know that about Micah, must be bitter seeing him everywhere now
@@Oljankylegs Micah was an absolute disaster for Villa, but he wasn't helped by playing in our worst team for the past 30 years. In his defence, he's told stories about how he was having a torrid time personally in those years and did ask to leave but was blocked. I can't resent him for that, but fucking hell I could barely watch him when he did play. Him and Lescott will rightfully go into many Villa fans' all-time worst Villa XIs
Good on Micah for not cancelling, he signed a contract villa had to honour it . If the situation was different, villa were doing well and Micah was amazing and wanted to leave, villa would have made him stay or at least got mega money for him.
@@Mashedpotato334 yeah he's a hero I'm surprised we've not got a statue of him ... Infact take the one of sir William McGregor our first chairman who's idea was the football league system down and replace it with big Meeks
Garry is the kind of a player that makes the years of achievements and style of play feel like the standard level for our club ! No other RB could give you that feeling no matter which club we talk about !
Love this blokes humility, same with Scholes’. Two blokes that won everything multiple times and don’t need to prove themselves to anyone. They let folks like the bloke behind this channel say it for them. Great video.
Absolute banger of a video, brother! You should make this every month. I can see the likes of Ole, Carrick, Vidic etc. We'd love to tune in and get a wider perspective of things.
As a new age Liverpool fan.. THANK YOU !
Long overdue! Well said!
I’m glad someone has made this video, I’ve always thought Neville is too quick to put himself down! He was a Top player
I’m a Liverpool fan & one of the reasons we hated him is because he was so good
Neville is like Carvajal.
I was just thinking the same thing I was imagining we'd never watched him and this was the first time seeing him 😂😂
Durrr brains 😂👀
@@danmancmufc 🤣🤣🤣
Great player, one of the best in his era. An utter professional for club and country! From a NUFC fan.
He was very good consistent player. I don’t like to use FIFA ratings as a an example, but I like to because it helps visualize how good players are. Gary Neville was a 85 rated right back, with all his important fullback stats at or above 80, and his form never hits inconsistent. Always at normal or in form.
What year did neville have an 85 rated card?
@@leefswgoh7558 fifa ultimate team didn't exist back when neville was playing but neville would have most likely been an 85 or 86 rated played
we should get united to share this video and label it as "Gary appreciation post"
Nice! He was a fantastic player. Outstanding as a fullback. Man Utd looked poorer when he was out the team. Huge respect for what he achieved with club and country.
Well said. I’m a Newcastle fan and I totally agree with you.
Thank U,
Mr. Gary Neville for showing us that we don't need to be egotistical maniacs to be successful.
Gary Neville, are you sure?
Not even a United fan but he was a great player. Probably the most underrated right back ever to play in the premier league. Thank you for your video highlighting this.👌
It felt like the whole time Gary was in the squad we only ever had one RB which was hm, and I was completely fine with that
Video is 2 months old now but I just stumbled across it 😂 really enjoyed this.
Really underrated player, can't think of a time i've agreed more on a football video 🤝🏻
What are an accurate description. Sam, you make me proud 🎉❤
Been saying exactly this for a while now. Nice to see it articulated very well. Great video.
Fair play Sam , great video and needed to be said . Gary is a person who should be admired
I think Neville is the most underrated Premier League player of all time.
He was a class act
Brilliant Sam. I remember seeing his debut for United and thinking he looked at home playing at that level. Good to be reminded of his achievements
NEVILLE IS A LEGEND SIMPLE AS THAT I WOULDNT OF CHANGED HIM AT UTD EITHER HE PLAYED FOR THE BADGE EVERY GAME HES CRIMINALY UNDER RATED
One of your best videos yet lad we'll done
Neville never played for Barcelona 😁
Thank you and hope you do more of these to show how each of our legends were when compared to today’s players
Kind of a terrible comparison since Djokovic is the GOAT
@roronoalaw7772 well done for missing the point. You do know you can compare attributes of two humans without meaning all attributes are identical? I have legs and arms, and so does Messi, doesn't mean I'm saying I'm the best to ever play football.
I think a better comparison would have been David Coffin. No notable standout features yet a strong work ethic and never say die attitude going up against often stronger and more talented players. There is no Djokovic in football. Messi is Federer and Cristiano is Nadal.
Liverpool fan here. Big respect to Gary for his footy skills and his social conscience
Gary Neville the Irreplaceable Right FullBack: Setting the Records Straight by Sam. I'll gladly do the Forward for you please
I always admired the neville brothers when I was young. A true Legend and the best rb I've seen in a Man Utd shirt.
Jesus Christ, Carragher's annoying!
100% Truth!! Neville was an absolute rock for United, understated, not flashy, utter workhorse and allowed the players around him shine because he did all of the groundwork for them to be able to go forward.
Højlund is fit W
Absolutely true! Great video! 😄
Thanks for putting this together Sam. It's been needed for a while.
Great video, well done for giving Gary Neville the flowers he so rightly deserves.
This video is spot on well done 👏👏 I was born in 1990 and was very lucky to experience the standard which left the day fergie did
Great video literally having this discussion the other day then came across video
👍
Villa fan here and Gary Neville was simply a quality full back for years at the top level. More respect is needed
A legend, a multiple award winner, a favourite of me then, a favourite as a presenter now ❤
Awesome and eye opening video.
Always knew of him, never seen him play though. Thanks for the video, now I gotta watch some of his games and do my research. But great video 👏🏼
Don't usually comment, but great video, loved it from start to finish. Thanks, been arguing this for years.
Great player. Would love to have him today in my ac Milan team
7.5/10 every match he’s just too humble to rub it in your face
What a great video
Well said and put together
Neville is indeed overlooked & underrated
I myself as a united fan of over 30 years could not of put this better!
Gary was to that United team what Phil Neal was to his Liverpool team two decades earlier. Both very good, underrated players who delivered every game.
Uncertain how this has landed in my recommended (Arsenal supporter) but this is spot on all throughout
Absolutely correct it’s like you listen to a conversation I have have all the time 😂
I did not really know at his time why he was so highly valued. I only remember his cross vs. milan.
But yes, all of what you said was true. I myself used to swap him on pes 2007 straight away because he was very slow in it. But he will remain a legend and our captain.
