@jrdr911 no problem. I had only seen them in movies, so when I found one i thought that some people might appreciate a review on it.

A fair assessment of the Traditional Spanish Wineskin Bota Bag: 9/10 for leaving a leathery taste if you leave water in it for awhile, and it gets warm.

Nothing says traditional like a plastic cap...

I love my 1971 leather bota ! made by Ricker. Here is the address to a nice one I found on the net hand made in Italy, It's the real thing and is suppose to last generations. www.tienda (DOT) com/table/products/bb-07.html ....It's really nice replacement for when that one gets old.. A Australian sharaz tastes great in a bota bag..

How long did you leave the water in before it turned gross? do you still use it? I wonder if there would be a point where the inside gets enough bacteria that it would always stink... even after rinsing.. maybe wine would kill them? have you tried using wine in it? id love to get one of these... as long as it lasts

For $10, it's a cool plastic flask that you can get into most sporting events and stadium concerts. For you purists, it's obviously not a true leather bota sealed with pitch, with a hand-carved stopper, but it's easy to carry and weighs less as the liquid is consumed! And, it looks Old World cool. And, they DO sell these cheap plastic versions in Spain. Heck the $10 Coughlin version is made in Spain. When you don't need portability, get a glass or ceramic porron! Especially during Calcot season. Salud!

The water does not stay cold. Ice cold to warm water in 2 hours

Bota Bag, or traditionally called "wineskin" was used for wine. However, you can technically use any liquid you choose. More modern uses would be water for hiking, camping, fishing and such. It's recommended to rinse the wineskin after each use to extend It's life. A lot of wineskins are crafted from different liners. It's best to invest into the materials that were used to craft it before purchasing. Water lasts over a week in mine. I did not purchase this cheap wineskin though.

Bota Bags kick ASS! I have a two liter one that feels seemingly endless when filled with Wine. Since buying it I fee like I can never go back to drinking from a glass hahaha!

Your water, (or wine), should not taste "leathery". The Coughlan bota bag is manufactured with a "thick poly lining", as mentioned in their catalog and website. You might want put some water with baking soda or very diluted white vinegar for a while to clean out and take away the "leathery" flavor.

The Coghlan, (and Coleman) bota bags are lined with plastic. That's why there is no "leathery" taste. Even a real tree-pitch lined wineskin bota bag has more of a tree-pitch flavor, than a leather flavor. If you rinse out your new Coghlan, (or Coleman) bota bag with a dilute mixture of water and baking soda there will be virtually no "plastic" taste either. I have been using the Coleman bota bags when skiing, (wine kept warm inside my jacket), for decades.
