The Whisky show the host mentions was the first Stereolab gig I saw. October 28, 1993 Whisky a Go-Go. This was the song they opened with. Fan for life after that night. R.I.P. Mary Hansen.
Damn you! 😆 I was born in 1966 and bought my first Stereolab record in 1993: pure early Gen-X. I have so many of them, in all formats, but my favorite is still that Jenny Ondioline 10" with French Disco (with a "c" not a "k", the original mix) on it.
I saw them live without knowing anything about them. Never in my life have I been touched by a musical experience like that. They made me melancholic, happy, lonely and in love at the same time. Mary surely is in heaven for her art.
What a wonderful performance. It looks like some kind of high school event where some of the students have a band. It just looks so fun and real and together. Because of what happened, I have never watched a youtube video of Stereolab (since I was a listener pre-youtube). I just didn't want to see all of them together but knowing what happened. But I'm very glad to have seen this.
Such a great performance by such a cool band. For all its faults The Word was a classic post-pub TV show with great music (not sure what the dancers are doing at 2:40 !)
In 98 a few of the bandmates came into Belgo in NYC and sat at the long wooden table right next to me and my friends. One of them had a baby I believe at that time. We were huge fans, but we let them have their peace without us being intrusive on their time. But literally we sat right next to them for the whole time we were there!
RIP Mary Hansen
It still makes me sad
She was the soul of SL

Miss You Mary
One of the greatest hits on my radio show that lasted from 1993 to 2016. Quel souvenir!
So good
The dancers that they had on The Word always danced like they'd never heard the song they were dancing to ever before.
I saw them all eating salads in Pomona once. It was a solemn vibe.
30 years ago! If you were watching a 30 year old band in 1994 you'd be watching something from 1964!!

Funny.....been listening to their records for over 25 years and this is the first time I've ever laid eyes on any of them.
One of the greatest bands ever
