The finest song by the greatest art-rock group of all time. Tragically overlooked, because they refuse to go with a major label. They should be household names. So very sad about the death of the lovely lady Mary. This was the group in their prime. It gives me exquisite euphoria.
The magic of Stereolab is that they make me feel so loved and depressed at the same time. It's like the real human experience taking place all at once!
Brilliant performance! Seeing Laetitia and Mary singing together made my eyes wet. Definitely my favourite version of Cybele's Reverie. The string section made the show stand out and unique. Wonder if the recording has a chance for a proper release (along with Les Yper Sound of the same session) in the future.
Each one was delivering at their heyday best, I was impressed by Laetitia's taking risks with her voice and bringing it places, touching sky. And Mary... her quasi Baroque la's to counter and silvery embellish Laetitia's lead were pure Chantilly créme. A powerful song like only they could deliver
Stereolab have to be up there with the greatest bands ever. Just amazing level output over a huge number of albums. This was such a great performance. Wish I could see them more often. RIP Mary.
i remember when they crammed all their equipment onto the 7th street entry stage of First Avenue in Minneapolis.. should have been a Mainroom show.. they were still fabulous as usual... those 90's were fun times musically.. Lush was super cool.. shoegaze, indy rock, manchester, speed metal.. soundgarden.. it was all so good!!
I got into stereolab back in the day. A friend gave me a tape. Listening makes me want to go to France and I imagine a summertime, cycling, French villages, and French motorways.
I'd love to pretend I was at gigs in the 90's before this, but I wasn't. I had seen Super-Electric on MTV and loved it. But it didn't really register when I came home from the pub in 1996 and switched on Jools Holland that this was the same group. But it was love at first hearing/sight. Such wonderful sounds, so cool looking. I wasn't alone in having an instant crush on Laetitia either. Thanks Stereolab.
Lol who thought you were weird? I always thought the most interesting thing about Stereolab was that they were groundbreaking/innovative and lyrically deep, but in a way that was extremely palettable and pleasant to most ears. I mean, people think I'm weird for being a huge fan of Meshuggah, but I can kinda get that because it's very abrasive, extreme music. Stereolab is not!
I saw them last night in Nashville and they absolutely blew my mind. I've seen so many bands over the years and they were right at the top of the list for me. Phenomenal.
I love Stereolab. First saw them at the 1997 Reading festival. Funny in this set how Classic TIm Gane, puts himself in the background, insists on never facing the camera.
This performance is awesome, they usually kinda rearranged their songs back into punky things due to the records being quite ornamental.... So cool to see them with the strings, and full blown sound effects etc
I saw them at Pitchfork Festival in Chicago. They were great, and it was so fricking hot that day I was worried they would die up there and myself too! But they were excellent. Funny thing I noticed, I had also just seen My Bloody Valentine in Chicago. And Bilinda Butcher was on the far left of the stage, and Kevin Shields was at the far right. Like they couldn’t possibly get far enough from each other. And Stereolab did the same thing thing, with Laetitia Sadier on the far right side and Tim Gane on the far left! Now if we could only get Cocteau Twins back together, somebody tell Elizabeth Fraser that she coild stand on one side of the stage and Robin Guthrie could be all the way on the other side. They wouldn’t really have to ever look at each other or talk to each other! Actually, that would be horrible to work with someone you had broken up with; so I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
I believe they play in that configuration because Mary used to stand center stage, like in this performance. they're leaving a space for her. Tim started playing stage right in the late 90s, before she died.
Only Stereolab song that can pretty routinely make me get a little misty, and I have no clue what the lyrics are! Also, the vibraslap hit at 3:15 is criminally under-amplified.
@@Eman_Puedama and what is there left to do when you've done everything, and how places keep traces of those adventures, and how in the end their silence will prevail

Their songs are like impressionist images, kind of fuzzy and out of focus, this one captures a nice feeling and then stays there with the same repeating chord pattern.
I want to make those bubble sounds! SO far Ive learned lfo on amplitude give the bubles the trem, and high levels of resonance and fiddling with extreme cutoff frequencies can sorta approximate the bubbles, but does anyone actually know how to do it on a modular??
I'm from Canada, am a HUGE Stereolab fan, saw them again in 2022, was such an exquisite experience! ... but my comment is about this video, we didn't have Jools in Canada, but he seems like such a wanker, seriously, what am I missing here?
Oooh, the mixing and production of live music has moved on massively since the late 90s. Listen to how live bands sound like on platforms such as Seatle's KEXP. Maybe the Lab could perform live on KEXP this year? They are touring the States soon. No brainer.
I was thinking the same thing when saw your comment. My guess is this lineup, with new members on keys and bass since the summer 95 recording of ETK, plus Sean O’Hagen (who I’m sure arranged the strings) and Sonic Boom is why it’s so next-level.

They were very much on a major label in the US.

Nonsense. They are revered by many music lovers. They were never about selling millions of records. They are obviously not underrated by you and me.

Mary was the soul of SL. Without her Stereolab lives but without any emotion and joy.
This really got me feeling some typa way
Another one eh, Its the uplifting tempo I guess
The vocal harmonies and the hook it creates is straight up Mamas and the Papas or Beach Boys tier.
I’m grateful to have seen Stereolab with Mary Hansen. RIP… respect
Saw Mary's very last show in Reykjavik, Iceland, just over 20 years ago. Always regretted not going both nights (they played 2 shows).
I love how those two gals sing together. Such a unique style.

I love and miss that 90s girl style. Almost all of my girl friends and girlfriends had a similar fashion style and we all listened to Stereolab.
Back in the day I never understood why these were not huge. I don't understand even more now.
Because Grunge-mania came and absorbed half the 90's attention, waves, promotions and payolas, etc. They were indies
